Canon Muses.
Are you happy with how your favorite canon muse was portrayed in canon?
Honestly, yes! When I first saw him, the only thing that I wanted out of him was to be a good boy with a good heart and to not be the traitor because of dumb jealousy - and I feel that I got what I wanted on both accounts. If anything, Atlus actually exceeded my expectations - they added so many sweet little details like his relationship with his Ma or alluding to Ryuji dropping everything to help an old woman. I also like how they subvert the whole ‘delinquent’ idea with him - he’s not someone who set out to cause trouble, he’s not someone who gets into fights or causes chaos for the sake of causing chaos. He’s an abuse victim who dared to fight back and was deemed a pariah and a no good troublemaker, for it. He bleached his hair because it was own way of rebelling, of taking back his individuality and independence - and he never once thinks about abusing his power or using it for the sake of ego or glory. Sure, he gets caught up in the fame and the popularity - he buys into his own success a little too much - but at the end of the day, he comes to realize that doing so was wrong and he allows himself to be humbled and to try to be a better person. He genuinely tries to pay attention to the feelings of his teammates and bond with them, even his efforts are clumsy and awkward - and most of all, bluntly or not - he speaks from the heart. With someone like Ryuji, you know that you’re getting the truth - even if it might be badly or clumsily phrased or even outright brutal, he will always be true to himself and speak from the heart.
The only issues that I have with him are minor - for example, I don’t really feel that I need to go into much detail about the much loathed scene with the two guys dragging off Ryuji. I don’t really care for the whole post cruise ship scene with Ryuji, although I don’t really view that scene as being the fault of Ryuji in this instance - but it’s still a scene with him that I felt let down by. Little things like him telling Ann she’s going to get fat by eating so many sweets - I personally don’t really like that much, but given their closeness and mutual playfulness with each other, I can also see how people would view it as teasing as well - he never seriously bullies or fat-shames anyone, so I have mixed feelings on that scene.
For the most part though, Ryuji was everything I could have asked for and exceeded my expectations on everything - I couldn’t be happier with what we got and I have very few complaints.
How far do divergencies go when it comes to your canon muse?
First and foremost, my goal is staying true to the character - I’m not interested in trying to reshape him or fundamentally change him - for me, divergencies are only really there to mend more problematic scenes with him - like take the example that I just listed with the sweets. Being an athlete and someone very much focused on fitness and health, I don’t think Ryuji would say that quite so bluntly (unless in a teasing manner with someone he could crack jokes about that with) - so, my interpretation is more that he would just let people eat whatever the hell they want, sweets or no sweets - whether or not someone becomes unhealthy or overweight isn’t any of his business and probably not something he’d so bluntly comment on unless he felt comfortable or close enough with the other person to lightly tease them about it.
#cfmanymuses#if my thoughts seem like a mess on that - they genuinely are#half of me wants to say it's teasing bc ryuann#but the other half of me still thinks it's not cool#so my verdict comes down to a case by case basis
