Same as it is for all living things.

"half dead" is one of my favourite less common types of undeath. someone who appears alive and whole at a first glance, until you notice their skeletal hand, or hollow ribcage shrouded in shreds and patches of rotted flesh, or naked bony limbs peeking out from beneath clothing. they might even need to breathe, eat, sleep, etc. just like the entirely living, but they're an embodiment of the liminal space in the transition between life and death.
