I'd love to dress like Sztojka Zoltán (Photographs here by Eszter Halasi) but doing that in the UK around other queers gets me described as feminine, or God forbid as A Femme, and people do a low whisper and a pause before they call me the things that I've asked them to call me, and often the pause and whisper comes with a little sympathetic head tilt and a patronising smile, or even a little impromptu lecture on how gender is fluid and heeeeey you don't need to have figured yourself out yet, it isn't a race!!

And I just want to crack them over the head with the history of how in what's now the UK our traditional dress was both suppressed and used as a rationale for why we were perverse and Unchristian, the bright colours seen as a sign that we were lascivious and promiscuous, and crucially both that our men were unmanly and our women were dangerously man-like in their attitudes. Effectively, that by existing as racialised people who were visibly different to white British people, we were sullying their "pure" gender binary.

i think a lot of white queer/trans people need to hear that "breaking gender norms" isnt just wearing a dress while masc or dying your hair. its also unlearning the beauty standards that impose ideals of white beauty and attractiveness on non-white folks. yes you have a nose ring but i just heard you tell your black friend with meticulously cared for natural hair "you'd just look so nice with straight hair is all im saying..." why does your blog fetishizing i mean uh. appreciating trans women only feature skinny white women who pass. when societal gender norms are so inextricably tied to whiteness and emulating whiteness it is not enough to simply change your aesthetic. you need to defy the gender norms in your own head too.
