Of all of the shows that you've watched when you went to Tokyo recently which one was your fav? :3
Let’s see, I saw the following shows while I was in Japan:
- Touken Ranbu Musical Mihotose no Komoriuta- Hakuouki Musical Harada Sanosuke-hen- Chiruran Shinsengumi Requiem Stage Play- Hakuouki SSL ~sweet school life~ Saitou Hajime Route Stage Play
Let me just say that they were all really good. I really wasn’t super invested in any of the shows outside of HakuMyu so I kind of went in without little to no expectations. TouMyu was surprisingly wonderful given that I really wasn’t invested in any of the swords beyond Ishikirimaru and came out loving all of them.
Chiruran was rough only because I’m still new to that franchise and it was pre-the Shinsengumi being the Shinsengumi which is still a gray area I’m not super knowledgeable on but the cast was fantastic and my favorites from that are Souji and Yamanami, oddly enough XD Cannot stand their Hijikata so everything is flipped for me there, but it was a nice change of pace.
SSL was the breath of fresh air that I needed. All the other shows had been really heavy with angst and drama but SSL was just a joy to watch. It’s still being made by the same production company that made the other live action stuff so it was still very much in that vein and I loved it. I was laughing so much and it was just the bright spot I needed to end my show run with.
Sano-hen though was my favorite. It’s what I went there for in the first place and it went above and beyond any expectations I had for it. I laughed, I cried (a lot), and clapped until my hands were raw at the end. If I could ever do that again it wouldn’t be too soon. I’m not kidding when I say that if I had had the time/money to see every show, I would have and never gotten tired of it. It was worth every bit of effort I went through to get to see it and I would gladly do it again if I ever had the chance. Seeing HakuMyu on stage is probably something that will stay with me for the rest of my life and I’m glad that it had to be this one. Everyone was so amazing and you could feel the energy and passion in that room. I’m tearing up now just thinking about it, it was magical. Every second of it.

Random af parallel between After 2 (Movie) and Hakuōki: Sweet School Life (Live Action)
I don’t intend for this to have a deeper meaning, I just see parallels everywhere and like to share my observations (: The parallel is mainly visual/cineastic.

Small detail, big difference (imo)
Picture 1: Okita forcibly grabs Heisuke’s arm because the latter is holding Chizuru’s hand. Heisuke seems to be in pain (since he has tears in his eyes). Chizuru looks distressed.
Picture 2: Okita (instead of Chizuru) grabs Heisuke’s hand, Heisuke only seems shocked. Then Okita grabs Chizuru’s hand and runs off with both Heisuke and Chizuru, smiling happily. Chizuru looks puzzled.
Also, can someone tell me in which context this little HSSL animation was made? Was it in the game files?
Meanwhile the live action series . . .

(I’m too stupid to make GIFs, sorry! These screenshots are funnier anyway xD - if you see the scene in a comedic way, that is...)

(Yay, I made a GIF! ...I just let Adobe Express convert a short video, though ^^’)

Inagaki Seiya making me like my 2nd least favorite Hakuōki character just by being pretty
Reasons I don’t like Harada:
- in this live action series, he encourages Hijikata to behave inappropriately towards his student Chizuru
- his character in the franchise has a thing for “innocent girls”
- in the HSSL game, he is demonstrably a groomer

Oh, how masculinities change through times and target audiences...
Historical Hijikata & Kondō VS Moeyo Ken (1966) VS Hakuōki (2008--)
Furthermore, there seems to be a general consensus that Hijikata had/must have a deep voice which can lead to Hijikata-actors adjusting their voices in ways that look and sound unnatural...
Example: Kurizuka Asahi in Moeyo Ken (1966) & Nakamura Yuichi in Hakuōki: Sweet School Life (2015)
Tumblr media
Moeyo Ken (1966) is the adaptation of the book of the same name which was mentioned in an academic paper that compared the book to Gintama. I uploaded an extract of the paper here.
You can watch the movie for free (with English subtitles) on archive.org.
(This topic about masculinities and representation of historical figures through time and target audience might be something for you @scarletfantasia.)

(If you would like to know why exactly I don’t like HSSL-game-Harada, here’s a post explaining it. [CW: There is a brief mention of grooming there.])

Is it just me or does Sōji’s actor from the SSL Live Action Drama look a bit like Morikubo-san (Sōji’s seiyuu)?
(Probably just me... ^^’)
