What's your take on Peeta B. Mellark's chest hair?
Ohhhhh, okay okay okay, hear me out... Hairy, but patchy. Like, i imagine that in his 20s he really develops full chest hair and beard AND he's got hairy arms. BUT the spots where he has his burn scars, the hair grows in more sparsely/finer. Katniss develops a habit of lazily running her hands through his chest hair. There's something so satisfying to her about seeing him be allowed to grow it out - no shaving, plucking, waxing, and whatever else the Capitol would do to the boys in the arena to keep them looking like boys. As she runs her hands through the coarse/fine patches of hair, it's physical proof that they survived and that the Capitol (old and new) will never touch them again. Peeta feels the exact same way about her leg hair. He LOVES rubbing his hands over her legs and feeling the long, soft hairs once they fully grow out. TL;DR MY BABIES ARE HAIRY AND IT'S HEALING FOR THEM

I gotta be straight with y’all: in a story full of brutal maiming, unforgiving starvation, and scorched earth warfare, that R-i-i-i-p is probably the most real and painful thing to read for me. Every single time 😭 Being a dude, it’s a pain I also have the heavenly privilege of never knowing, which means it’s probably worse than I’m imagining 😬
It makes me feel even more for Katniss later on their Victory Tour. She’s absolutely fuming at the bullshit double standard of Peeta getting to sleep in AND keep his body hair while she has to be up early and stripped to the bone 😤 And she is so right for that. She even mentions how she actually liked the return of it 🥺 and they’re taking it away from her again 😠
This is why post-Mockingjay, I will accept nothing less than a Peeta Mellark who adores his furry-legged kitty. For one thing, he’s probably been checking out her legs since the sixth grade, hair and all. But more importantly, between now and the end of the story, he experiences probably the worst leg pain imaginable 😭 He sees no sense in being cruel to your legs, especially when you have the good fortune to still have two. He will kiss those hairy legs of hers every opportunity he gets. When Katniss speaks of them growing back together, there’s absolutely a literal component to it for me 🥰💚🧡

No one has ever asked me what I think Katniss and Peeta look like but I wanna write it down because I have a very distinct picture of them in my head. Let's start with my favorite, Kantiss:
She is slight and short in stature. You know those people who regardless of however much they might eat or weigh, always look small, not bony but just very thin? That's how I picture her, at least when she's a kid. Just all elbows. Maybe she fills out after she has kids, that shit permanently changes your body. She has a very sharp nose. It's distinct, not quite a roman nose and not quite a hooked nose, it's those noses with a bump? Do you know what I mean? Like a straight roman nose with a little bump on the bridge? You get it. Her hair is very long, I don't see her cutting it all that regularly. Her braid is thick, and nice and tight - it's the type of braid I always wanted to have as a kid, just one thick rope. Her hair doesn't fall out of it unless she's at home relaxing. Her skin is dotted with beauty marks just because I think that's adorable. Her eyebrows are her father's, so they're thick, dark, and generous but a nightmare to pluck haha. Her default expression is a frown, but at she ages she still manages to develop laugh lines. I think she has that great hair gene, so she has great eyelashes and hair on her forearms, and very hairy legs - no wonder waxing sucked pre-games lol. I think her eyes are somewhat upturned, like there's an angle to them which I think makes sense ethnically speaking. The Katniss in my imagination doesn't have a Cupid's bow. She also has larger front teeth haha, I have no idea why.
Peeta, to me, has always been someone I'd describe as healthy and hearty.
As Katniss says, he's got wavy ashy hair that falls across his forehead. Pale eyebrows and nearly invisible eyelashes. I don't know about ya'll but that communicates to me that this kid is pale, so so pale. He's got freckles on his arms and face, much thinner lips than Katniss with a defined Cupids bow, a straight nose, and almond shaped eyes I suppose. His eyes are a very normal blue but, of course, Katniss thinks they're the cats meow. He's got the wide shoulders and thicker arms from working his entire life, but also from being a younger version of his father build. I think that as he ages Peeta will look like his father, as would have all the other Mellark boys, just the large man frame that Mr. Mellark had. Only Peeta wouldn't be large and silent, he'd be large and talkative lol. I picture him at average height, as the book says, so around 5'10 during the events of the novel. I don't know if he grows taller or not. I'd have to know what Mr. Mellark's height was. I don't think he's cut or anything lol that's so unrealistic. He's got that nice frame of someone who's strong but doesn't look like he works at it a lot because he just doesn't. I bet he's also iron deficient, or at least he was based on what he says he was eating pre-games, so that must add to the paleness too lol. He's got nice straight teeth and a good smile - which makes sense with his whole TV persona.
I think Haymitch's assessment of them is accurate. They're attractive enough. They're not Finnick level, but they're in no way ugly. They definitely meet my personal beauty standards of what I consider pretty people, but keep in mind, I'm not exactly a mainstream media person.
anyway, send asks related to this if you'd like!

Watching you go - Part 4
Summary: Chariot rides awaits and multiple conversations take place.
Tumblr media
Previous part - Next Part
The wax hurts as they do it for the hundred time that day. The prep team had been complaining about how hairy you were but you couldn’t focus on it, you were too busy thinking about everything that had been told in the train.
They seem to have taken every single hair of your body as one of them tells you that your stylist will be arriving soon and to just stay put. You don’t know what you should be expecting, last year they had fire how could you top that.
A young woman enters the room, she smiles shily, her long blond hair has pink woven through it and she has a few piercings but it’s the least make up you’ve seen on someone in the last hour.
“Hi, I’m Delia.”, she tells you and comes to shake your hand. You get ready to answer her back, but she just shakes her head kindly.
“I already know who you are, did a background check before I made the clothes.”
“That’s pretty smart.”, you can’t help but say as you get the robe closer to you.
“But please tell me a bit more about yourself.”, she says quickly, maybe she thought you had taken it badly.
“I was raised in district 12, raised in the butcher shop and otherwise nothing special.”, just the fact that Haymitch is apparently your father or that Peeta is your boyfriend but here he is seen as Katniss’s.
“What about you?”, you ask her, and she smiles while taking a chair not far from her.
“I just graduated fashion school and here I am, first year into clothing tributes.”, you can’t help but smile at her excitement, even if it is for such things.
“Well, can’t wait to see what you have planned.”, you tell her, and she smiles widely at your words while opening a big portfolio.
“So, as you know last year was all about flames but what about what makes it so flammable. Plus, something that relates to district twelve. Coal.”, she says to you as if it was the most breakthrough idea she ever had and you start to feel scared, hopefully you weren’t going to end up in a coal pack.
“Now I took my ideas from there but made the clothes more wearable and something that would catch the eyes. I did a short black dress with gold lining woven on it and a top part for on your shoulder that will be like a cloak.”, she shows you the design and you can’t help but be impressed by it, it looked beautiful.
“It’s beautiful.”, you can’t help but whisper and she look extremely happy at your words.
“Glad you like it! Now let’s get you ready.”, the two of you talk through the entire two hours and you can’t help but feel less stressed than you did before.
The walk down the hallway to where the chariots are feels like a maze and like it takes forever to get there but once you are in front of the door you suddenly feel like you want to go back.
“It’s nerve-racking right?”, you turn around towards a sympathetic Delia and nod slowly.
“One thing I always learned was let the close do the talking, but you are the one that is wearing them so show them who you are through the clothes.”, you try to get all of that in your head, but it seemed like a bunch of words that you couldn’t understand.
“Shoulder back, head high and show them who you are.”, the door opens, and you know you have no choice but to hope that Effie’s high heels training will work.
The room is turned into whispers as you enter it, but you ignore them, too focused on getting to the chariot where the horses are. After a moment or two everyone starts talking again and you feel yourself being able to breathe again.
The horses are beautiful, not that you have seen any of them before, only from Capitol’s stories about district 10.
“Quite the entrance there.”, an unknown voice says, and you turn around to see Finnick Odair smiling at you.
“Thank you, I guess.”, you say after a moment of looking at him surprised.
“Horses like some sugar, it’s quite bad for them but once in a while it’s alright. Sugar cube?”, the man looks at you with a questioning gaze while trying to give you a sugar cube and you look at him slightly surprised.
“No thank you, don’t want to eat too much before the chariot ride.”, he nods at your answer and turns around to give it to the horse who happily munches on it.
“How are you liking the Capitol so far?”, he asks you and you look at him surprised for a moment that he was keeping up the conversation.
“Haven’t seen much of it but it sure seems grand. Any tips on what to visit before the arena?”, you can’t help but ask sarcastically and Finnick chuckles at your words.
“I’ll give you the grand tour when you get out if it.”, this time you do look at him surprised, but he has a knowing look in his eyes.
“Quite certain there.”, you tell him, and he smiles secretly, like he knows everything about you.
“I don’t reveal my sources, but I am quite sure. Do you have any secret?”, you can’t help but blush slightly as the man comes closer to you. You weren’t blind, the man was incredible handsome with green eyes and wavy hair, he seemed like a god.
“Not one that I can think of right now, but I guess you’ll see. I don’t reveal all my cards immediately.”, Finnick smirks at your answer and you try to keep eye contact with the man but it’s getting difficult, with his intense gaze.
“Mysterious, I like it.”, the two of you look at each other before a voice breaks you apart.
“Hopefully I’m not interrupting anything?”, a tense Peeta says, hard eyes looking at the two of you and you take a step back from Finnick.
“Of course not, just getting to know my protégé.”, Finnick says with a smirk, and you look at him slightly confused.
“Protégé?”, Peeta looks pained at the word before coming next to you.
“We just got word that during your training you have been matched with another victor to train you. They say it will make it more spectacular. We still stay your mentor but during training days you will be with Finnick.”, so that is why the man came to talk to you. Peeta doesn’t look very pleased with the matching, and you could understand why.
“What about Gale?”, Finnick smiles at the question and turns towards Peeta to let him answer.
“He will have Johanna.”, Johanna Mason, district seven victor. You had seen her games with Gale to prep for the Quarter Quell as you were sure you would be picked.
“That sounds like a terrifying duo.”, Peeta nods, looking tired for a moment and you can’t help but smile at him in sympathy.
“Who do you have?”, Peeta looks even more tired at your words as Finnick start sniggering.
“District two, the female tribute.”, you can understand why Finnick laughs, the girl looks like she either wants to kill someone or be left alone. Plus, in the final last year he was against district two.
“Having a party without me?”, a female voice asks, and you turn to see Johanna Mason arriving, looking beautiful and somehow elegant in these high heels.
“Never Jo.”, Finnick flashes her a flirty smile, but she hits him at the back of the head making him pout at her.
Before the two of them can say anything, Gale and Katniss arrive, Gale matches the black and gold, but he seems to be showing as much skin as you are.
“You two are certainly going to catch some attention.”, Johanna says with a smirk, and you can’t help but blush at her long gaze on your body, what did all these victors have to do that.
“Don’t you have somewhere to be rather than annoying us?”, Katniss says quite rudely, and you turn to look at her slightly surprised.
“Why would I want to be anywhere else when I can annoy you Kat-Kat.”, you can’t help but chuckle at the nickname, but you quickly stop yourself. However, Johanna and Finnick have heard you and they are both smirking at you.
“Before this turns into another catfight why don’t we all get our tributes ready?”, Peeta says, trying to soften the mood.
“Sure, baker boy, we’ll see you tomorrow for training anyway.”, Gale looks confused at her words, and you turn to look at him.
“The Capitol decided that we would do our training with another victor.”, he nods at your words and looks less confused.
“And who did we get?”, before any of the others can answer you look at him deadpanned.
“Why do you think they are here? To drink something?”, Gale rolls his eyes at your words but smiles.
“Right well I assume Ken is for you and I’ll get Mason?”, you nod quickly and Finnick argues that he isn’t a Ken doll making us all chuckle.
“All right you two times up we need to get everyone on the chariots.”, the victors leave towards their own tributes before you turn around to Haymitch. You hadn’t seen him since the train ride, and you didn’t know what to feel at the sight of him.
“Remember, you don’t smile you just look forward. You are coming from the winning district, and you are here to remind them of how powerful you are.”, the two of you nod along and Haymitch sends you to the chariots.
“Hey, it’s going to be alright.”, Peeta says after taking your arm softly.
“I know, just feeling the stress right now.”, he smiles softly, understanding what you mean.
“Don’t worry I’ll be here watching, I know you’ll do great.”, the two of you smile at each other for a moment before you break apart and get on the chariot next to Gale. You see Finnick in the distance looking at you with a confused gaze and then towards Peeta as if he was trying to resolve a puzzle, but you don’t have time to think about it before the chariot starts moving.
--
“The Capitol loves you.”, you hear behind you, and you turn around to see Haymitch walking towards you.
There was another level above the district twelve apartment, and it was somehow peaceful to see the Capitol moving around from there.
“Wonderful.”, you can’t help but whisper sarcastically and you hear Haymitch sigh behind you.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”, you can’t help but ask, wondering just what he is sorry for.
“That you are stuck with me now.”, that makes you turn around, seeing him sat down on the bench looking tired, sadness lingering in his eyes.
“I should have never told you the truth, that way you could still be with your father and mother without thinking of me.”, you don’t know what to answer, the anger lingering in your blood feels too small compared to the sadness you have.
“Would it be better that I would’ve known this since I was little? Probably. Was I pissed when I heard you say this in the train? So much.”, you see Haymitch nod slowly at your words, but he doesn’t say anything.
“But that doesn’t mean it would’ve been better for me never to know about this.”, that makes him look up and he looks at you surprised for a moment.
“I used to go by the butcher’s window just to see you there, up on the stool laughing while your father did things to make you laugh. And every time I knew you were better off without me. Maybe we should’ve told you earlier but I’m happy that you had a good childhood, it could’ve been bad with me in it.”, he says after a moment, and you look at him for a moment before sitting down next to him.
“We will never know how it would’ve been and I could decide right now to ignore every single thing you said in the train or in the last minutes, but I won’t. I’ve only got four days to get to know my biological father and I hope that we can do that.” You tell him slowly, unsure of how he would respond to your words.
“I would like that.”, the two of you smile at each other before turning around to look at the city.
“Tell me about yourself.”, you hear yourself whisper and the rest of the night is spent on the roof, talking about Haymitch’s childhood and yours while the city went to sleep.
Thank you for all the comments it really helps! Not sure how the games are going to happen but we'll see!

Weird Hunger Games Headcanon no one asked for
I forget where but Katniss mentions something about Peeta not being as hairy after the games
So hear me out, you also never heard of a girl having her period. And we know the capital has no qualms with medically altering children (wanting to give Katniss a boob job and letting them die)
So when the tracker in their arm is placed, so is a little extra juice or something.
Like puberty blockers. Guys won’t grow facial hair so they can continue looking “good” for the capital. So they continue to look like children to Panem.

They didn't know we were seeds
Chapter 22
Cw: mentions of starvation, alcohol withdrawal
@justrainandcoffee @emotionalcadaver @peakyswritings
Aveline/Linnie belongs to @justrainandcoffee
Tumblr media
Laurie gets a whole week with his father before school starts in September.
He is entering kindergarten where he will be taught what every five- and six-year-old child must know in Panem. Compulsory education with free meals and free supplies was one of the few good things Snow did in his career even if the quality and available things depended on the wealth and number of victors in each district.
Eva remembers how every child in 10 looked forward to schooling because it meant being inside an air-conditioned building and being fed a whole meal each day, two if you were lucky enough to need tutoring after school. From what she’s heard from her fellow mentors and Jack, the career districts had enough food and variety that it was even thrown away by the kids.
Laurie who has never wanted for anything ---except more time with his dad and grandma and a little sibling to play with--- will go with new clothes and shoes that fit and a belly full enough to complain of the lack of variety in the school cafeteria. They have taken care to teach him not to be rude and if he simply wasn’t hungry to give his food to someone else, and now came the most important thing they had to cover before he starts kindergarten.
Eva had tried to do it, but Laurie had not taken it well. Instead, Eva watches the conversation from the kitchen pretending to be busy with Paquito and Lola’s food bowls while Jack consoles their son in the living room.
Even if Jack’s dirty and sweaty from tinkering with the new security censors Beetee made for their basement all day, Laurie doesn’t care as he hugs him tightly as he cries his little heart out. Their kid will never know suffering like they did, he will never have his name in a reaping bowl nor fear the wrong words will get him lynched by Peacekeepers or the Mayor.
“Why can’t I tell my friends?” he asks, crying into Jack’s chest because at four and a half he doesn’t know this is illegal. “Why, daddy?”
It hurts, but it’s a relief to know they won’t have to ever do this again. Next year they won’t ever have to say goodbye and lie about who they see.
But today, it falls on Jack to explain because Laurie doesn’t want to hear it from his mother, Laurie needs the father --who he sees less of with each month every year--- to explain why this great injustice must be endured.
“’Cause I’m from a different district, kiddo, not supposed to leave 2 just like you’re not allowed to leave 10 with your mom.” Jack stroked Laurie’s soft dark hair and explained as best as he could. “You can tell them I’m your dad, but you can’t tell anyone me and your grandma come here because we could get into a lot of trouble even if your mommy and me are Victors.”
Because we’ll all be dead if you tell the wrong person.
But you can’t tell your little boy that.
“I promise, daddy.” The little boy murmurs, still buried in his father’s chest unaware of how serious this crime was.
So when Laurie is asleep in his bedroom and his parents abed ---inside the real bedroom and not the holographic projection they feel safe in---, Eva rakes her fingers on the hairy arm wrapped around her and brings up Jack’s plans of spiriting their families away from Snow’s hands. “Is the offer still available?”
“Aveline has access to the network in 11 and Gale, the kid from 12, is sweet on the mayor’s girl even if he hides it well. I don’t trust Cray with anyone, but if he’s still Head Peacekeeper in 12, we can get out of Panem.” Jack doesn’t sound as sure as he was a year ago as he tucks his wife under his chin and his hold on her grows a little tighter.
He had made these plans with Lyme and Aveline and everyone in the underground railroad to 13, but the changes Katniss and Peeta’s win brought had disrupted many things. Even Shelby was having trouble with his network after so many crackdowns in the rebelling districts.
“Do you think we can get everyone out before the Quarter Quell next year?” Eva asked knowing the answer was no, but Jack is sweet enough to lie with a.
“Depends how well the kids from 12 can lie on their tour.”
Tumblr media
“There’s been a change of plans, fuckwad, ma'am.” Haymitch begins as they meet with Lyme in the attic. He is sober and his handshakes not from the withdrawal but from real palpable fear. “Kid’s been threatened by Snow, personally. Whatever plans you have need to be postponed until we have Plutarch and 13 completely onboard with us.”
The last time someone was visited in person by Snow was when he convinced Jack to kill Eva. Snow hadn’t left his castle in almost fifteen years; he never left it unless the threat was as real as him.
There were uprisings in 8, 7, and 11 and smaller acts of defiance sprouting everywhere. 2 had some workers unionizing and the union organizer murdered in broad daylight, 10 and 4 had more people caught for wanting to flee south in their fishing boats and even people in the Capitol were becoming bolder.
All bore the symbol of the Mockingjay, the bird the Capitol never planned to exist when they made their Jabberjays and set them lose into the wild. That coupled with the four-note song of 11 and 12’s salute had ignited fires that even the Victory Tour and all its killings couldn’t suppress.
“Then we’ll plan accordingly, get the phone Beetee fixed for you and be on high alert for more changes.” Lyme stops being their friend and becomes their commander, she commanded 2 and parts of 10 in the name of the Rebellion and was the true commander of the Victor contingent. “Chaff and Linnie said they’ve changed the officers and even the rank-and-file peacekeepers in 11, Paylor’s not been able to get word to Cecelia in months and they live in the same fucking place, Mags said they been restricted from going too far away from the shore and 10 still has Campbell running the joint. It’s only a matter of time before Cray and the others in Shelby’s pocket are working in the sewage department without tongues.
If you trust your kids to know the truth, then tell them. Keep an eye on Gale and Johnny Dogs, they are your men, and you, like it or not, are the Commander for 12 until the time comes, Haymitch.”
The blonde woman makes her orders clear and Haymitch’s fists tighten as he tries his best to hide his fears, especially now that Lyme has made it clear what his role in the Rebellion is.
No more drinking to forget, no more pretending he’s not important. The rebels needed his money and status to protect and lead them to freedom.
Barely a few months after the games and the storm was already on the horizon. Eva’s prediction that the Quarter Quell would be the final domino was becoming even more likely with every second.
November turns to December and once the weather clears up enough, Jack readies himself to make the trek south to see his family. He could try the riot gear and new identity as Sulla Felix but chooses against it and deciding it was easier to brave the elements and head straight to the farm.
He never misses Eva’s birthday nor a chance to be with his family.
Things should be calmer now that the kids are engaged and the Capitol too engrossed in the wedding bullshit to care about all the shit going on in the districts.
Jack’s barely gotten to Lyme’s place as when he learns Snow is far from pacified.
“The fences are now electrified 24/ 7 from 1 to 12, I’m sorry, son.” Lyme put a comforting hand on his shoulder as she stopped him from leaving and saw it for himself.
In the time he’s been kept from here due to shitty weather, the fence has become larger and harder to climb. And for the first time in years, it’s fully operational.
For the first time in years, Jack and Eva spend December 1st apart.

Do you think Peeta minded Katniss’ body hair in canon or post canon?
Hi Anon, thanks for the ask :).
Short answer? No, I don't think Peeta minded Katniss' body hair in canon or post-canon. The way Suzie C wrote Peeta reads to me like someone who isn't superficial, and his feelings for Katniss weren't based on her looks. He was drawn to her fire and tenacity. He would have just wanted her to be happy (and would have been glad to be there with her too much to think about it).
District Twelve was such a destitute, poverty-ridden place that removing body hair probably didn't concern them when their families were starving. I could see lots of beards and long hair on men, and I think body hair for men and women was the norm.
One of my favorite headcanons about Katniss and Peeta during their growing back together time was just letting themselves get really fucking hairy and just living their non-camera-ready lives. I'm talking beards, unibrows, armpits, what have you. With Katniss's darker complexion than Peeta, I think her legs had to be much hairier than his. And he was totally fine with whatever she wanted to do with her own body because that's how our boy is.

(RE: your hunger games post) the casting in the movie is really a crime because they used people that are obviously adults and part of the Oh Shit The Capitol Is EVIL Evil is that they put kids into the hunger games and that’s all lost because Jennifer Lawrence is a model with plucked eyebrows etc SAD!
I was actually contemplating the adult casting and decided I don't think that's the problem, inherently. casting adults is always a bit more moral than making children do labor for you, and wouldn't it be ironic if the "mistreating children is fucked up" movie had a scandal where their child leads were mistreated on set? (and it's not a stretch to make this hypothetical suggestion, the industry of filmmaking is harsh towards children.)
I also noticed, that if you squint, jennifer lawrence can pass as a 16 year old in the movie. specifically from a distance where her perfect "natural" makeup is less discernible, she has a bit of a baby face and her laugh lines are either very subtle or not there at all (if this was because of makeup, I'd consider this element successful)! often what gives away actor's ages are these lines, so it's an important element in making an actor pass as a child, visibly.
her acting is also, as far as I can tell, decent. I have no strong opinions on it but I think book katniss' attitude comes across ok.
I gen think where they fucked up, is that they were afraid to make her look real. not just with the makeup. there's so many shots of district 12 where they highlight the "scary" rednecks living there. (the over-use of shaky cam, and the camera angles they chose made this intention apparent, imo). people who look real and their bodies lived in, with imperfections and wrinkles and messy hair and matte, maybe even dirty, skin. then they cut to the "16 year old" mc, in perfect lighting and a still cam, and she has smooth flawless skin and perfect lip gloss. hairless legs and plucked brows even before the scene where they, in the book, force these traits onto her to sell her as a sex symbol, at 16. it's a hard contrast between the town she's from, and her as an individual. it's impossible to miss that she's fake.
the books scream at you "these are stolen children, being turned into sex symbols before maturity, and being brutally murdered by a corrupt government. and their home is full of good kind people who are misrepresented as savages by the capitol", meanwhile thru 100 different subtle filmmaking techniques, the movie screams, "hey isn't this poor town fucked up and yucky!!!!! btw jennifer lawrence is hot" I don't think jennifer lawrence herself is the crux of the issue, but the decisions that were made around her are.
it's like, I think my point is that in a movie you use things like acting, costuming, and make-up, to turn a human into the character they're supposed to represent. they don't need to be 1:1 with the character irl. like, even if jennifer lawrence wasn't naturally hairy enough, they could've added hair! that is a thing movies can do! it's a job where you're doing play-pretend. jennifer lawrence could've, imo, both looked and acted as a convincing 16 year old, but somewhere along the production decided keeping her sexy was more important than the book's themes.
tl;dr: I agree with you that they fucked up the themes entirely, but don't think casting a child would've inherently fixed the problem. (chances are imo they would've just waxed and plucked the child's body before filming as well, and it'd have the same uncanny effect as what they did with lawrence).

she can't remember the last time she slept this good, which probably means it had happened when she was still a child, exhausted from a day in the woods and an evening trying to play hide and seek with prim in their tiny, tiny home at the seam; she had fallen asleep feeling tired, a little sore, but content and loved. it's all the same now, when she's much older, but feeling truly loved in a way she hasn't in way too long. a confession of love feels between the dream world and the real world, and real world katniss is too sleepy and pleased to even realize, though she offers recognition by wrapping her arm just a little tighter around her husband's torso, a last sigh — happy, she's happy! — pressed against his skin before she dozes off. peeta's heartbeat is steady when she flutters her eyes open, and she stays there for a moment, basking in the most comforting sound in the world.
he's still sleeping when she shifts gently, lifts her face to look at his. he's not having another one of those awful nightmares, and he seems peaceful, almost. his golden hair sticks to his face, curling softly against his forehead, his cheeks are still that healthy pinky color people like him had and his lips are parted slightly. peeta is so pretty, she thinks. he had been pretty last night too, above of her like that, and she should have said it, but she could not muster her voice to say anything other than his name and other unintelligible sounds (she hopes she will have the opportunity to say it still, when they are like that again. if he would want to. he would, wouldn't he?). her gaze lowers to his neck, where the soft nibbles she had pressed on now grew a soft shade of red-purple, and that causes her to bite her bottom lip at the memory (she hopes he won't mind it terribly once he gets to look in the mirror. of course, his prep team can cover it all up very quickly, but still!). her eyes lowers still to his chest, bare as her own; she knows men have hairy chests as men around the seam always took their shirts off during the worst of summer, but she never bothered to linger on the image, though, as she does now. peeta's is hairless, and she wonders if it is of his own inclination, or the prep team finds it amusing to rid him of his body hair as they do with hers — she imagines that once they are home, it could grow, and would it grow in the same way the hair of his head did? would it trail golden all the way down to his stomach, and below, where the sheets now cover?
katniss feels him stir, and her cheeks flame, embarrassed at the possibility of being caught observing him like this, imagining him like that. she moves too, draping a leg across his hip, underneath the covers, while she positions her chest against his. they've slept like this sometimes, but there have always been too many layers of clothes, and she can not entirely hide — even if she would not admit — that she is embarrassed at the thought of being seen naked, even after last night. she can not flee now, though. "hi." she greets, as blue eyes are visible. katniss swoops in, presses her lips against his in a soft peck. "do you know you're very pretty?" she pauses, waits for it to land. "do you want me to move away?"
Katniss kisses him and it feels like coming home. Peeta's eyes flutter closed and he revels in the taste of her as she deepens it. His heart is pumping wildly, despite the fact that the kiss is gentle, soft. He's scared, though. Doesn't want her to take this away as quickly as she's giving it to him.
It's why, the moment she pulls away, his brows knit together in concern, body stiffen, preparing for the moment where she realizes just who she's kissing and runs. Waiting for another crack in his heart, wondering how many he can get before it completely breaks.
But it never comes.
Instead, Katniss whispers the one word he'd needed to make this true. To make it okay. Yes. She gives him this and, with every press of her lips, it's like another stitch in his heart. She's fixing it, careful not to miss any open wound, and Peeta sighs shakily as touches the end of his shirt, asking a question. His gaze flutters back and forth between hers and he nods. "Yes," he says, the same word he'd needed to hear.
One look at her and it's all he needs for his own fire to ignite inside of him. She may be the Girl on Fire, but hadn't he had just as many flames in the beginning? He rushes forward in an almost desperate kiss, hands grasping onto skin, pulling her as close and she can get. They rid themselves of clothing, shirts and shorts and underwear mixing together on the floor, and Peeta thinks that nothing has ever tasted as good as Katniss' lips, sounded as good as Katniss' sighs, felt as good as Katniss feels around him.
It's quick - honestly, he's a bit embarrassed because he'd wanted to make her feel good, too - but he touches her after and hopes it'll be good enough. Knows it will be because they have a million more minutes together where he can explore every part of her. He doesn't want to miss anything about Katniss Everdeen.
After, he holds her in his arms and the room is quiet, his nightmares a lifetime ago. He kisses the top of her head and then presses his cheek to her hair. He's not looking at her when he says it. "I love you." So quiet that it might be impossible for her to even hear. "You know that, right? That I love you?"

its v annoying that a lot of people took katniss regularly talking about how the default expectation for the girl tributes’ appearance always involved alteration (makeup, shaving, cosmetic surgery) as her being a “not like other girls” girl instead of thinking abt how that relates to real life for like. two seconds

Okayyyyy, I got massive stomach cramps and don’t feel great right now so I decided it’s a good time read and blog chapter four for THGagain 😅🤧🥳
Tumblr media
I feel nauseous as it is, Katniss narrating Haymitch laying in barf is 🤢
Peeta and her just exchanged a glance about Haymitch, they’re already silently communicating 🥰🥰🥰
Yes, I will be blogging every minuscule detail of Everlark’s interactions and what about it?
Katniss and Peeta already have a silent agreement, they’re bonding here already 🥰🥰🥰 yes my shipper comments are coming in hot and strong like a freight train this morning they’re surprising even me ok
Okay, Katniss shut up about Haymitch smearing his vomit across his face I really chose the wrong time to read this chapter, y’all pray for my stomach
If Haymitch is sort of fat the way Katniss kind of makes him sound (calling him paunchy and implying a beer belly) then her and Peeta really must both be considerably strong because hauling a drunk, 240ish pound (I’m just guessing his weight) man can’t be an easy feat.
Why did Katniss just give me the image of Haymitch’s hairy chest? 😂😂😂😂😂 she’s so over the top descriptive in some ways and in others, she just glazes over important details like 😅😅😅
Of course she sees everything Peeta does as trying to get one up her in strategy and not because he’s a genuine or caring guy 😅😅😅 I don’t blame her she’s going to a death match after all but I still laugh, knowing what’s coming and who Peeta is.
Speaking of this scene reminds me though, I don’t remember who said it recently but I saw a different post about this idea and I really liked it : what if Peeta is so comfortable / casual about bathing or caring for a drunk Haymitch because he’s experienced this same kind of interaction with his father? The man who apparently doesn’t stop his wife from beating at least one of his kids? What if he drinks and that’s why this part with Haymitch isn’t seeming to throw Peeta at all? Maybe it’s a far-fetched idea but I thought it was worth mentioning 🤷🏼‍♀️
Oooo though, Peeta right from the start couldn’t stand the people of the Capitol any more than Katniss could. They have more in common than I even thought.
Also though, Katniss thinking to herself that she would make a Capitol worker deal with drunk, dirty Haymitch as a form of vengeance because of their privilege and idiocy versus Peeta who doesn’t want revenge is really a good, very subtle show of character and who they are when they start out in the series. And how Katniss was really stuck in a middle ground between Gale’s ideology and Peeta’s, and how she evolves and fully comes to Peeta’s side at the end. Let’s be real though, by the end I don’t think even Gale was on his own side anymore when it came to justice and vengeance and war.
Awww Katniss is just suddenly realizing Peeta’s kind at his very core 🤧😫🥺🥰🥲. I need to stop writing about every little detail and just get on with this chapter sorry to anyone who’s reading this wreck.
“Kind people have a way of working their way inside me and rooting there. And I can't let Peeta do this. [...] I decide, from this moment on, to have as little as possible to do with the baker's son” yeah, this resolve really worked out for you, girlfriend 👍🏻
Also I kind of love how at the start she would constantly refer to Peeta as “the baker’s son” like Mr. Mellark is just chilling with no name, he’s just the baker and Peeta is just known as his son. Can you imagine if we got Peeta’s or someone else’s point of view and Katniss was referred to the coal miner’s daughter? Like that Barbara Streisand movie that I’ve never seen but my gramma has on VHS.
Okay she just threw the cookies from Mr. Mellark out of the window and like 😤😓 like what if my idea that Peeta made those cookies specially for her is true and the brat just tossed them out the window like talk about ungrateful kids nowadays
“the packet of cookies hits the ground and bursts open in a patch of dandelions by the track.” I don’t know what this is exactly meant to symbolize but I’m gonna pretend it confirms my Peeta baked the cookies idea 😎😎😎
Katniss’ flashback to Prim and her collecting dandelions and going through the plant book to find more edible plants is nice if for nothing else, it shows Prim actually taking an active part in helping them survive. I need to be nicer to Prim, I gotta keep trying to turn this bus around.
Katniss’ descriptions of going places alone for the first time without her father is so sad 🥺🥺🥺
Also though she said it was the first time past the fence “without my father’s weapons to protect me”. So did Mr. Everdeen have more than a bow and arrow? Because Katniss says one line later that she retrieved the small bow and arrow her dad made her for a little protection, which is a). Super cute because I never realized her dad made her mini hunting gear 🥺🥺🥺 and b). Wording to me just sounded like Mr. Everdeen was in possession of more weapons than just a bow but maybe it’s just me 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️
It’s so melancholy though that Katniss never had truly hunted before her father died. He hunted and she just came along. He never saw her shoot her first deer. 🥺
I feel like the segment here is very important, “Plants are tricky. Many are edible, but one false mouthful and you're dead. I checked and double-checked the plants I harvested with my father's pictures. I kept us alive.”
I always forget that in Katniss’ eyes Peeta was rich. She even just referred to his father as one of her wealthier clients.
Okay but girlfriend really said she dug up katniss roots with her toes and then had her mother and sister eat them 😒😒😒 gurl, thats nasty
Also her father’s “as long as you can find yourself, you’ll never starve” was such a dad joke, omg 😅😅😅🥲😂😂😂😂, he sounds so nerdy
Ummm so Mrs. Everdeen started singing and that was a key moment to let Katniss know she was better but like ... does everyone in Twelve sing now? Did both her parents have good voices? Does this lady ever sing again? She barely has any speaking lines I don’t know where she would sing
Aww, that part where Katniss says she could never get past her mother’s abandonment and could never really forgive it resonates with me. Idk why because I never went through anything like that. But I’m unforgiving so. Also it seems a lot more accurate and true to a real girl’s reaction than a lot of other directions that could have gone.
Awww, Katniss’ regret 🥺. I feel that too. You wanna be able to express your anger because you have so much hurt but there’s a part of you deep down that wants to work things out still 🤧🤧🤧. Esp if you’re probably about to die.
Okay, sidebar but fish stew and strawberries sounds nasty 🤮 that might just be my bad stomach right now
Bahahaha I’m sorry bad place to launch but “I’m so glad I didn’t drown that cat, so he can comfort my sister in my absence” got me
Now I think of it though. Parallel beginning to end. Buttercup comforts Prim when she thinks Katniss surely can’t come home again and then he comforts Katniss in the end when she knows for a fact that Prim can’t come home again 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Ugh I feel her loneliness though. I hate when I’m away from people I love and I’m strange places with people I don’t know but will one day become close as family to and I think about what everyone else is doing without me. That’s just like ... the loneliest feeling ever. 😭😢😓😥
“Probably the drawers hold any number of nightgowns, but I just strip off my shirt and pants and climb into bed in my underwear.” This works very well with my headcanons for post canon and all my AUs. Basically how her and Peeta sleep in my mind 😎😎😎🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Katniss can’t cry even after the day she’s had because she’s too used to pushing back on all her emotions and forcing herself to be strong, to the point that it’s ingrained in her even when she’s facing an almost definite promise of death 😥😥😥
There’s probably a parallel between her comfort being the train rocking her to sleep and Peeta rocking her to calm her down in Catching Fire. 🤷🏼‍♀️. Idek where the parallel really is but I thought it so I said it that’s how this works.
Does Effie feel like repetition somehow makes her words more impactful? 🤨
Katniss’ practically coming through with the whole “I put my clothes from yesterday back on since they’re not dirty yet.” Kind of just reminds the reader that she probably has to typically wear all her clothes until they’re so filthy she has no choice but to wash them in the sink or lake.
How does her braid still look acceptable? If I ever sleep in any hairstyle it looks like the 80s crimped pony when I wake up 🥲.
Why is Effie swearing and Haymitch is laughing while Peeta looks embarrassed? Do we ever get an answer for this?
Awww, Katniss has only had an orange one time in her life, when her father bought one for her, for New Years 😭😭😭😭. Like the fact that she doesn’t even recognize orange juice because she’s never had it 😔😔😔 and the fact that an orange, one of the nastiest fruits in the world with its vile taste and texture is a treat to her 😫😫😫
I agree with you though, boo, about coffee. It does taste bitter and thin 😖😖😖
Also I know her mother was a merchant growing up but part of me thinks her mom experienced all these luxuries (the velvet dress, the coffee, etc) because she was close to the Donners.
Peeta and her have never had hot choccy 😩😩😩 well I decide they have it every day after the war
Omg her savage comments to her mother 😅😅😅
Is Haymitch drinking a Bloody Mary? 🤣🤣
Ugh I forget how irritating Haymitch is at the start? Like I’m trying to remember does he really not ever even try with the tributes or is that a show he puts on to make it seem like he doesn’t care? He must care if he can recall every single one of them for the memory book in the end of Mockingjay.
Katniss and Peeta are still having silent conversations like y’all kids are already married basically 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don’t make these rules I just push them
They’ve never had a real conversation but this is their third silent one 🤣😅🤧
Honestly Peeta is written though as such a love interest from the start. I was thinking about that last night, that when I first read these books with zero expectations of anything, there was always something that hit different in her narration of Peeta versus Gale and every other male she encounters. I get why it’s seen that she secretly harbored a crush on him from the start. I was in like 9th grade when I originally read these books leave my stupid newfound revelations alone
“I'm surprised to see the hardness in his eyes. [Peeta] generally seems so mild.” This is why I love him. Peeta’s so much more than a generic kind person. He has so many layers.
Even Katniss is shocked by the different aspects of his personality and he’s not just some walk on nice dude 😅🤦🏼‍♀️ it’s a journey for her in the first book to get to know him and all his different layers.
And I kind of feel like the people who say he’s super weak or child coded ... just never truly understood Katniss’ changing perspective on him. Like somehow a few people ended up getting trapped in how Katniss saw him at the start or something. That made no sense ignore it it’s a working theory.
Omg Peeta’s got some violence in him. Honestly I always liked how he just unexpectedly knocked the glass from Haymitch’s hand and shattered it on the floor. Like he smacked it hard.
Somehow I feel like Peeta’s ability to lash out stems from his abuse ngl 🤷🏼‍♀️
Also I love that Peeta talks about both him and Katniss. “That’s very funny. Just not to us.” Because they’re already a team. They’ve already got an unspoken understanding. It’s so beautiful 🥺
Idk why it makes me laugh that Haymitch “consider this for a moment” before just punching Peeta. Like I know in hindsight he punched Peeta here as a test to see if bread boy was a true fighter (he is, y’all 😭) but it reads on the first time as Haymitch is drunk and is slow on the uptake 😅.
Katniss’ diving a knife into the table seems less impressive honestly than Peeta managing to knock a glass from Haymitch’s hand, all the way across the room 😑🤭
Also she braces herself to get hit as well but can you even imagine if Haymitch hit a little girl? Like she’s not Prim but she’s a five foot like one sixteen year old who probably weighs less than 100 pounds. Just saying, imagine how much different we’d all feel about their mentor if he punched her too 🤐
“Did I actually get a pair of fighters?” 🥺🥺🥺 you have no idea, old geez 😭😭😭😭😭
Peeta is so sad though when you realize he just took a hit and nonchalantly puts some ice on like it’s nothing.
Also Haymitch saying don’t ice it, let the mark show, must be a foreign thing to Peeta, considering the implied abuse from his mother. He’s probably spent his whole life icing bruises and marks to make them less visible to people at school 😭😭😭😭
Bahahaha “that’s against the rules”. Peeta is such a rule follower at the start. Probably because as a merchant he was better off than the Seam so he was likely raised that if you disobey or get in trouble, you’ll lose the food or money or business that’s keeps you surviving, versus Katniss who just straight up had to break the law in order to live. I’m just making notes here this isn’t a serious thought yet.
I wasn’t aware Katniss was experienced at throwing knives 😦. Girl, you always had a good shot at these games, why you sell yourself short? Why does Peeta as well? Lord, what district 12 kids need is a motivational speaker and perhaps some self-help books.
“Not entirely hopeless” sounds like a compliment coming from Haymitch 😭😅
“Attractive enough” is an indication they’re both v v v sexy 😎😏 I’m kidding no one vague blog about me
“the best-looking tributes always seem to pull more sponsors.” Side eying you, Finnick 😛
So do a lot of kids resistant their stylists most years? Based on Haymitch’s advise to them it seems like he’s dealt with some temper tantrums 😅
Oh wow. She’s giving geographically explanations for the Capitol and its location and I got a D+ in geography so let’s move on because I don’t understand what place she could be referring to 🤧🤐
I do love how at the start she constantly refers to Peeta as either the baker’s son or his full name. 😅😂🥳
Awww Katniss is claustrophobic because of her father’s death 😭🥺🤧
“Both Peeta and I run to the window to see what we've only seen on television, the Capitol, the ruling city of Panem” they’re so young and little and sheltered 🤧🤧🤧🤧 like two kids their first time you take them to Disneyland. If Disneyland was trying to kill people, that is. Which it might be because those rides and their seatbelts never feel secure ya know what I’m saying I digress but still.
There’s a sweet shop in district 12??? I was over here thinking I invented it after the war in my fics??? I gotta rewrite now 😒
Okay how did Peeta’s waving get construed recently as being childlike? He literally just outright said he only waved at the people because one of them could be rich. It was blatantly to showcase the difference in Katniss and Peeta. Katniss walked away the second she grew disgusted by the Capitol people because she won’t perform for anyone. Peeta, who’s probably been performing to hide his mother’s abuse his whole life, knows how to manipulate a crowd and sees the importance in making powerful people like you. Even if you find them vile.
Katniss now going on about how she’s misjudged Peeta and he is a master manipulator. I mean, she ain’t wrong but she still ain’t right here either.
“His father showing up with the cookies and promising to feed Prim. Did Peeta put him up to that?” I seriously think Peeta did ask him to go give her the cookies, just not for the reason she thinks 😅.
I always thought his crying at the Justice Building/Train Station was genuine and legitimate but honestly, Katniss makes a good point here. We later do see how cunning and artful Peeta is with manipulating a crowd. He’s always 10 steps ahead of Katniss on that count. Maybe his crying was an act?
“Volunteering to wash Haymitch but then challenging him this morning when apparently the nice-guy approach had failed.” I don’t think that’s true 🤣😅. I think Peeta just got fed up.
“And now the waving at the window, already trying to win the crowd.” You could have waved too, Katty Deen 😂. It’s funny how she had a better opportunity to do all these things Peeta did to win people over. She’s a girl, she’s much smaller than him in the book, she’s pretty according to Haymitch, Prim, Gale and Peeta. If she’d cried at the station or waved to the crowd and then showcased her bow and arrow skills, she’d easily have been considered a potential Career.
“All of the pieces are still fitting together, but I sense he has a plan forming. He hasn't accepted his death. He is already fighting hard to stay alive. Which also means that kind Peeta Mellark, the boy who gave me the bread, is fighting hard to kill me.” No, dum dum. He’s fighting hard to be likable and keep you alive. I don’t think he had the Star Crossed Lovers planned from the get-go but he clearly knew he could be a key player making her the victor. And he is. But he also becomes one too and that’s just beautiful 🥺🤧😭😭🤧😭🥺😭😭🥺🤧🤧😭🥺🤧🤧😭🥺😭🥺
Okay, that’s all for my thoughts on chapter four! 🥳🥳🥳🥳 I know I carried on far too long but if you made it to the end, feel proud of yourself. Because I never shut up.

How hairy is peeta do you think
this question caught me off guard because honestly I’ve never though about it before 💀
but thinking back the only time peeta’s body hair is referenced, is when Katniss reminiscences about washing him by the stream in their first games;
“-in the arena at least some of the boys got to keep their body hair whereas none of the girls did. I can remember Peeta’s now, as I bathed him by the stream. Very blond in the sunlight, once the mud and blood had been washed away. Only his face remained completely smooth.” [catching fire, chapter 4]
and to me that makes me think he’s pretty hairy 💀 she says he’s very blond in the sunlight (not ginger, sorry to the ladies who like that, but katniss clearly says his body hair is blond) and also that only his face is smooth - which sounds like he’s sort of covered, at least sparsely, in hair.

I highly recommend a full re-read. I might re-read them all soon. They’re genuinely wonderful. And I’m not usually a “the book is always better” person.
I totally agree with you that the leg thing shoulda been included. I just understand why it wasn’t, as someone who works in media production.
I think the major overall flaw of the films is that they were too cowardly to commit to an R-rating. Just because it was a book starring teens doesn’t mean it was a book for teens. I enjoyed the movies, but if they’d made it as raw as the books, it woulda won Oscars. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of all the things that the books did that the movies were too cowardly to include and that reduced the emotional the overall emotional impact.
The lamb stew thing
Peeta’s leg. The emotional impact of it on him and how it affects his survival in later books.
Katniss realizing they did something to her as she never got her period in the games, which went on for two weeks.
Letting Katniss have hairy ass legs before The Games
The movies never explain why they’re called the hunger games or how that disproportionally affects poor people. I sobbed when I read how the games/reaping worked. I was aghast when they didn’t find a way to include it in the films.
Not only do we not know the extent of Katniss’ relationship with Prim before The Reaping, WE DO NOT EVEN KNOW PRIM’S NAME BEFORE EFFIE CALLS IT. AND WE DO NOT EVEN KNOW THEY ARE SISTERS.
Obviously the overly CGI animals really destroy a lot of the emotional impact, but specifically not giving the mutts the eyes of the fallen tributes is cowardly
They didn’t show any major deaths. They showed a lot of stuff like someone throwing a blade and the fallen tribute hitting the ground with a blade in their chest. But the book spends a substantial amount of time describing the moment of impact in a lot of cases. Specifically the tribute who got her head bashed in. Katniss spends a lot of time describing the dent in her head and how it looked like she could wake up if there was just a way to make the dent convex instead of concave again. If you’re going to make a movie about kids killing each other because of the depravity of the adults around them, then sanitizing their deaths for your comfort and to appease the MPAA is fundamentally villainous behavior. Commit to the R you cowards.
All of the food metaphors. Including how Katniss thought the buttery airy rolls symbolized the frivolous and insubstantial people of The Capitol and how that contrasts with the hearty breads Peeta makes.
A random lit thing that BREAKS me. (Mockingjay Spoilers)
Remember that moment in Mockingjay when Katniss discovers that the lamb stew comes from a can? And she was all: …oh.
I died a little inside.
Like, that WHOLE series had been building up that stew. That stew symbolized the difference between the districts and The Capitol. The decadence. But there was still this sense that, somewhere in The Capitol. There was still a middle. There were still hardworking people who, although severely out of touch with humanity, were still… human. Someone had to make that stew, we thought. Or maybe, some of us believed that the Avoxes (Avoxi? Avox?) made the stew.
And there was also this sense that the food was made with care. That somewhere, deep inside Panem’s blackened heart, they knew at least on some level that what they were doing was tragic and perhaps even wrong. That stew was the best The Capitol had to offer, right? That stew was The Capitol’s way of saying, “We understand that this is a matter of ritual. But we also understand that it involves 23 dead souls. But we value those souls and we want to honor your sacrifice.”
And then it was from a can. And the whole world of the books came crashing down. The ritual was not sacred or even matter of honor – not real honor. It was the honor of being looked at, which was the highest honor The Capitol knew how to bestow. It had no concept of something larger. It was just entertainment. It was just a game. It was just food in a can that anybody could buy from a grocery store. That The Capitol could have shipped to the districts. That could have stopped Katniss from starving. That could, if shared in that manner, have avoided the events that lead to Katniss’ rift with her mother. And Katniss is just stunned for a moment like I wasn’t even worth a cook, was I?
Honestly, the film completely missed on EVERY food metaphor that appeared in the books. So much so that the title seems pretty weird for the film. But no such omission was as absolutely devastating as this one. I get that you have to change things for adaptations to film. But this literally would have been one shot of Katniss eating a bite of stew and that two line exchange between Katniss and Caesar: “What has been your favorite part of the games so far?” Katniss, “Um… The lamb stew.” Don’t tell me there wasn’t room for that in the movie.
Can we just talk about how the fact that not EXPLICITLY including the stew in the films is a more unforgivable error than the books sanitizing the death scenes or letting Peeta keep his leg?
