THIS. Is my favorite mythology post ever.

I’m not a classicist, but I suspect one of the reasons so many of the Greek gods are portrayed so unflatteringly was less because they were seen as villains than because they represented their domains.  Of course Zeus sometimes misuses his power, that’s what a king does.  Of course Artemis’s wrath is wild and painful, that’s what nature can be.  Of course Hades snatched away a young girl from her mother’s arms, that’s what death does.  This is one of the reasons callout posts for some gods comparing them negatively to ‘nicer’ gods are kind of missing the point.

Aphrodite who cries for the people who hurt themselves because self love is love too

Artemis who doesn’t hunt animals anymore (humans do it enough) She now walks in clubs looking to hunt the real animal

Athena who donates hundreds of books to local libraries and schools

Apollo who watches all street musicians hoping their talents can get them a little money (He gives more than a little)

Dionysus who watches over everyone’s drinks at the bar making sure they stay safe

Zeus who makes it rain for the couples that just want to frolic and dance and kiss in the rain

Hera who donates to woman’s and SA survivors shelters

Ares who is at the forefront of every protest because those are battles too

Hestia who holds and keeps thousands of secrets so the ones who whispered them into flame don’t have to

Hades who let’s families get one last goodbye to a loved one before they die

Persephone who personally makes sure that the ones taken too early feel safe and secure in the Underworld

Demeter who gives Her best crops to food banks and homeless shelters

Hecate who is a street magician and does actual magical for the kids

Poseidon who finds the best seashells and leaves them on the beach for someone to find and treasure

the Gods aren’t gone they ARE the little things in life

I think I'll just try to add one for each Olympian besides Athena and add links if I already made bigger posts about them. (The non-EPIC gods might get a little shorter)

Zeus: Makes the biggest gestures, in debate, at dinner, just whenever he's talking. It's great for who's sitting next to him (usually Hera and Athena respectively) bc who doesn't love being almost hit in the face every two seconds?

Poseidon: Involves himself in arguments all. the. time. Nobody cared, nobody asked, he knows like half of the facts and has no idea what the problem is but SURE shout along.

Hades: A lot more measured and chill than his brothers, but lets himself be drawn into debates and he CAN get pretty heated if the arguments get too nonsensical.

Hera: Has a massive garden and tends to it herself. It has a peacock fountain and stuff, it's really beautiful.

Demeter: Will 100% cry if she gets a gift from one of the kids.

Hestia: The best. Gives people a bit too much space sometimes. Like, yes, all her nieces and nephews are stubborn but some of them really could need a venting session or a hug down the line, but she just leaves them be. (It is not her responsibility but she wouldn't mind them venting, she just assumes they'll come themselves)

Hephaestus: Is actually a really good singer (we're not talking musical world rules where everyone can sing, normal world) Like mostly it's too loud in the forge but he sings to himself anyway and he has a good voice.

Aphrodite: Is an amazing swimmer. Basing this on her ocean-born creation myth even though I am more of a fan of her being Zeus' kid for my own version. For the same reason, I always picture her with pearls

Artemis: In council, I believe she's the most confrontational actually. Yes, more than Athena. Athena lies to get what she wants. Artemis doesn't live on Olympus, she just comes for the council meetings so she might as well speak her mind even if it means the meeting is even more chaos than normal. In general, she never backs down from what she believes in.

Hermes: God of eavesdropping and gossip. Seriously. Do you really have to know every single thing that's going on? Also I think his funny persona is a coping mechanism but it's so deeply ingrained it would be literally impossible to shed.

Dionysus: Randomly says the most insightful shit you've ever heard. Like, Athena is speechless levels of deep stuff. Like... is it because of the drugs or is he on drugs because otherwise his being would transcend the universe, we will never know.

My completed submission for assignment v: "Exploring Myth Through Artistic Fundamentals"

"Don't look back" is my take on the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I wanted to make an illustration that was both fun to draw and to look at. Here, I challenged myself to push storytelling through body language and shape design. Hades and Eurydice's figures are inspired by Bernini's "The Abduction of Proserpina" sculpture.

The idea that it was Hades helping Odysseus in Six Hundred Strikes is so fucking funny to me

He's got this mountain of paperwork he now has to do both because of Poseidon's actions and Odysseus's shenanigans that are also a result of Poseidon's wrath and now he's overworked and angry but also way too busy putting out fires to go up top and smack the shit out of Poseidon himself so instead he just gave Odysseus the strength to do it for him

penelope: i mean, i have to know what happened between her and ody, PLS, it would be cool if it was a eurydice/ orpheus type situation where meli has to figure out what the hell EXACTLY happened ( im just clinging onto my hc that ody didnt willingly sleep with either circe or calypso but thought he cheated bcs he felt like he did when he didnt )

telemachus: does he hate his father? does he still love his father even if begrudgingly? I NEED TO KNOW, also he and icarus team up and slowing down kronos' legions

paris of troy: idk it'd be funny if melinoe and paris have friend- hate relationship bcs he killed achilles but they bond over losing their siblings, also i need to see him trying to find hector again, i imagine they temporarily reunited in elysium but they got separated, he fights his way back to elysium and is currently there trying to find him

hector: bonds with meli over losing siblings and acts kinda like patroclus, hes just there and u can reunite him with paris, hes also looking for him bcs he isnt in elysium anymore, it became too dangerous and when you reunite them, hector is just scolding him for going here in a brotherly way while paris is sobbing and is so happy he found him

patroclus: i need to see him fighting again, like he has the sandals on, his spear is poised and ready, he looks like hes gonna go through hell and back AGAIN and when he meets mel, he goes cold but when she reveals herself as zag's sister, he notices the eyes and while he keeps his guard up, he doesn't attack and acts like in hades I and gives the same stuff ( also would be cool if he had bottles of ambrosia or nectar on his sprite as a sort of callback to zag gifting everyone )
