hi!! I recently found your blog, fell completely in love, and then was introduced to the rest of sc tumblr. I was inspired (by you, mostly) to start my own blog, but I’m not entirely sure how to get involved in the schitt’s creek community on here- so I was just wondering if you had any advice for a tumblr newbie who wants to share their love of sc with others!! thank you tons for all you do <3

oh goodness, hi! welcome to tumblr!

i guess the first thing to know about getting involved here is that that tends to look different than it does on other social media sites. finding other fans on twitter or facebook or whatever is like being at a house party—it’s loud, with lots of people yelling about lots of different things in the same general space, but there are always conversations happening that you can get drawn into. tumblr is more often like standing alone in your living room, yelling about things you like, and occasionally one of your neighbors will poke their head through your window to yell with you before they have to go home and yell in their own living room for a while. that’s not to say that you can’t develop relationships here; i just think it’s important to recalibrate your idea of what that process looks like.

so, anyway, how do you actually engage with other people here?

if you’re making content, whether that’s gifs or edits or fics or fan art or any kind of post discussing the show, tag it. use both sc tags (schitt’s creek and schitts creek), use relevant character or relationship tags, etc. lots of people follow those tags, so they’ll see your posts pop up on their dash on occasion or when they go directly into the tag.

reblog other people’s content and say things in the tags. just liking things is fine, but the interaction stops there. if you want to actually participate, you want to reblog posts that you like, and do some of that yelling alone in your living room in the tags. (lots of people who are new to tumblr tend to do it directly on their reblog of the post, but generally speaking, the culture of tumblr is to only put things directly on the post if they’re actually contributing to the discussion in some way, since that will continue to be attached to the post any time someone reblogs it from you. personal commentary like, omg i love this, goes in the tags instead.) yelling in the tags may seem like yelling into a void, and it kind of is, but almost everyone i know checks the tags on reblogs of their own posts, which means people see your enthusiasm. if people notice you in their tags often enough, they might check out your blog and decide to follow you. plus, this is how your own followers get to know you better, too. it’s even better of course if you say interesting or funny things, but obviously not every post is gonna cause earth-shattering revelations for you to drop in the tags, so it’s def okay to just be like, this gifset is gorgeous, can you even believe how in love they are? 

reply to posts when it’s appropriate. (it’s the little speech bubble button, in case that’s not clear.) if someone posts that they’re having a bad day, you might reply to their post and tell them you hope it gets better. if you have a question about something someone posted, you might reply to ask it. you prob shouldn’t reply to every gifset that comes across your dash to say how much you like it—again, that’s what tags are for—but if there’s something specific you have to say to whoever created a post, replies are a good way to do that. (note: you cannot delete your own replies on other people’s posts, so be sure it’s actually something you want to say before you reply.)

send non-anonymous asks. the best option tumblr has for directly engaging with other fans one-on-one is sending asks, but if you’re looking to build relationships, you have to do it with your name attached. otherwise, how will they know you’re a different person from any other anon that sends an ask, and how will they know where to find you if they want to ask you things too? so when people post ask games, send an ask. when you want to know what someone thinks, send an ask. when you’ve already left kudos and comments on ao3 but really want to let an author know you loved their fic, send an ask. just remember that if you’re really looking to engage with others, you have to ask things in a way that actually opens up conversation. @patrickredactedbrewer talked about some dos and don’ts for this just the other day if you need tips on that. ask things, ask follow-ups, and reply to or reblog asks to continue the conversation too.

the last thing i’ll say is it takes time. you’re not gonna build a network of followers and mutuals overnight, but little by little, you’ll find your people and they’ll find you. <3

ashlee’s gif making tutorial

@amysperalta​ has requested a gif making tutorial from me and i’m happy to oblige! everyone has a different way to gif and some ways don’t work for some people, so this is just how i personally make them. i’ve also never made a tutorial before, so let’s hope this doesn’t end badly.

this is the gif i’ll be making for the purposes of this tutorial:

things you’ll need:

a version of photoshop

some way to get frames from a video file (i’ll give some options)

patience

step 1: getting your frames

there are many, many ways to do this. there are multiple different programs to do this with (kmplayer, uplayer, gom player) but i personally use mpv (via @kylos​ lovely tutorial here; which i also highly recommend as a gif tutorial since it gives a different way to create a gif file) because my mac doesn’t accept any other type of program. 

note: BE SURE THAT WITH ANY PROGRAM YOU USE, IT IS SET TO SAVE EVERY FRAME. some people may lie to you and say a program grabbing every other or every third frame is fine, but it’s 2019 and we don’t do that any more. the tumblr gif limit is 3mb, which means we can have smooth, non-choppy gifs by gathering every frame from a scene.

okay, so i gather my frames, and typically keep them in a folder, separating scenes cut-by-cut so it’s easier to handle. for example: 

from there, i import them into photoshop using: File --> Scripts --> Load Files into Stack; this screen pops up, in which you browse for your frames hit OK. this will automatically upload all the frames into the same file for you. be patient! depending on how many frames you choose, it can take a few minutes to upload all of the frames.

i always save my work after every step. so once frames are uploaded i save the file. be sure to have “timeline” (or “animation” on some versions of photoshop) opened in your view. my photoshop looks like this when i open the file:

now, i’m going to click “Create Frame Animation” at the bottom. This will give me a timeline to work with at the bottom. Next step, go to the three little lines on the right side of the thingy that says “Timeline” and go through these steps:

now, you have a working gif! you can hit the little play button at the bottom left of the screen and it should play for you.

step two: cropping and sharpening

there is plenty you can do for sizes on tumblr. the general widths are 540px (big), 268px (normal) and 177/178px (small). it’s all a matter of the type of set you’re making. also be aware that the gif limit is 3mb. the bigger the gif, the fewer frames you can have. most of my 540px gifs have between 20-35 frames, while some of my 268px frames can have 75-90 depending on the coloring of the scene.

but for the purpose of this tutorial, i’m making one 268x160. i go to the crop key at the left side, and set my ration up top to 268 and 160.

then i crop the gif! (note: sometimes, files will have a black line on one side of a video file; typically the bottom or on one side. the black line will be no more than 2px big and sometimes hard to see until you’ve cropped it. be sure to drag the cropped area away from the edge of the files that have this dark line, as it when appears on the final gif and looks bad. one of my more recent sanditon gifsets fell to this and i didn’t realize until i had posted it. 😖)

now we have to size it. you do do this by going to Image --> Image Size or using the keyboard shortcut. it should automatically keep the aspect ratio, thus when you change width to 268, the height should change to 160 automatically. 

hit OK and now you have your base gif!

next, we’ll be sharpening and setting the frame rate, two very important things. to sharpen a gif, there is no way you want to go do it frame by frame, so you can use an action! these are really helpful. i have one i use for most gifs, and one i use for lesser quality. the one i use for this gif is this one here. to use this, you’ll have your photoshop open, you can go to your actions in your barthingy on the right by color swatches which should look like this:

click that and find the three grey lines at the top right. click them and this will pop up. you’ll go to “load actions” and then browse for the action you downloaded. 

once loaded, it will show up like this and have a nifty play button! 

make sure you click on/highlight the “play me!” line and then hit the play button on the bottom of the box. it will go through the motions for you and sharpen your gif. once that’s done, you can hit the big action button to close this box to get it out of the way. now, to set a frame rate, you’ll go down to the timeline and highlight all of the frames and then click while holding shift and this will pop up.

you’ll select “other” and type in “.05″. this is the most commonly used frame rate. most movies and tv shows will look fine using this for scenes, especially ones with subtitles, etc. for more artistic scenes, sometimes i’ll use “.06″ to slow it down just a hair. also make sure that your gifs are set the loop “forever”.

and there you go! a gif fully sharpened and moving at the proper speed:

this is also the time you can choose your frames. meaning if you uploaded like 200 frames and only wanted to use 50 of them, you can go through and delete them in the timeline. there’s a little trashcan button there.

note: once you’ve sharpened and set your frame ratio, be sure to go into your levels box and click the top frame. it is also useful to have the first frame in the timeline always highlighted as you’re editing the rest of the gif. 

step three: coloring

there are endless ways to color. there’s loads of people offering psd colorings. (psd means an editable photoshop file btw) you can also make your own. i have a whole slew of psds i’ve made for certain scenes that i’ve kept and reuse, tweaking each time. this isn’t a coloring tutorial, but i’ll show you a quick way to make a simple coloring. (i purposely chose a well lit scene for this gif tutorial for this reason. making dark scenes look good, or scenes with bad color balance is a whole other tutorial lol)

first off, make a folder above your frames. you can name it whatever you want; it will automatically call itself “group 1″. this is where you’ll be putting all of your coloring layers so they stay together and you can also save it to use again.

from here on out, we’ll be adding layers, using the half black/half white circle down at the bottom; just click on it and it’ll pull up a list of things you can use. note that when you add coloring layers, you start at the bottom and add other layers on top of it.

always start with “levels”. i lighten up almost every scene i gif, since it gives me the chance to play with contrast on my own terms.

then we’ll do a “selective color”; this one is just to set some blacks while giving contrast. be sure to select “blacks” at the top and change just what’s below:

most gifs also need some “color correction” at this point. (this is a layer you’ll keep coming back to to tweak as you add more above it fyi.) for this one, i’ll make it a bit more green and red.

the gif right now looks like this....which isn’t perfect, but i can see where it will get to from here:

now we’ll add a layer of 100% “vibrance”

not every gif needs 100% vibrance, but i tend to like how colors look when i use it and we can fix any weird colored skin in later steps. and now some curves for contrast:

which is much too yellow certainly, but gifs always look worse before they look better when it comes to coloring! next, we’ll make another layer of “selective colors”. this is when you’ll play with each color within the same selective color layer. i’m guessing i’ll utilize more blues and less yellows under “yellow” and “red” but let’s see what happens:

which is a lot better. i’ll probably up the blacks +10 (using the same selective color layer) just a bit so crowley can be his angsty self entirely. i also want to up the greens because i love bright gifs.

the great thing about selective colors is that they’re easy to manipulate. and you can even have multiple of them over one another to really zero in on one color. and if you find that you can’t get the gif to look right at all, you can also return to your color balance layer and tweak it until it looks better and is easier to manage.

so now, my finished gif looks like this: 

(this is not the most exciting gif ever, but it works to show how to play with colors in a well lit scene).

there is a number of other things i do/can be done in making gifs, but these are the basics. 

be sure to go to File --> Export --> Save for Web and follow my settings to save your gif. (there are many ways to save a gif, and each gif tutorial will give you different settings. i recommend trying them out and see which works best for you.) pay attention to the “bicubic” quality at the bottom. and when your gif is small enough (under 3mb), be sure to click on the “original” tab at the top and save it while on that screen.

and, because i’m feeling nice, let’s have a quick subtitles moment:

bonus step 4: subtitles

i know there are easier ways to make subtitles but this is how i do mine. using the ruler around your photoshop space, drag one vertical line over your gif. the program should automatically “snap” them to the middle of the gif to create your perfect center.

then take the text tool and write something in it, no matter where or what size, just so you have something to manipulate. you’ll find that it too will snap to the center to match the ruler line, giving you a centered text box! you can have it whatever distance you want from the bottom (don’t go too close or tumblr will cut it off) and then you can edit the text color/font/etc. these are my settings.

and i also have an added stroke and drop shadow to it which you can get to from Layer --> Layer Style:

it is important to add your text layer ABOVE your coloring folder, otherwise the coloring will affect the text. and it’s good to have different colors for different people talking.

I wasn't even gonna offer replies to @guardiandae tirade but after they just kept on and on and on. I'll allow an explanation that isn't 75% assumptions.

So here is a list:

- If you honestly believe anything she is saying, I won't stop you. Feel free to have whatever opinion you want about me but allow me to say anyone who knows me even just a tiny bit knows what kind of person I am.

- I have never yelled enough time already that I was never against NSFW artists. I have NSFW artist friends, me being Ace change nothing about that and guardiandae and I even made post in the pasts talking about that very thing. ( but of course she ain't saying that lol.) I explained myself like 3467532 times already. Not liking that content DOESN'T equal disliking the people making it.

- ( that one made me laugh because the accusation was so ridiculous.) The eclipse AU was turned into Zenith because I was looking to made an original story since a WHILE for portfolio purpose and my own friends came to me telling me potential ideas, which then developped the story in a completely different direction. ( Zenith and the eclipse au are nothing alike aside for Sola's design. That's it. ) it has ZERO to do with Doon's and Myself's parting.( but yeah let's use that to further your shitty agenda.)

- I don't take out my wrongs in situations and Doon and I parted ways because I was not in a right place emotionally because of hormonal therapy, which left me extremely distressed and unstable BECAUUUUSE of therapy ( ya know totally reconstructing your hormonal system is bound to have side effects.( one I was being followed for by my endocrinologist.) Some people dealt perfectly with it and understood while others didn't. So I knew when to leave them the fuck alone because I was being a royal pain the ass, but I can safely say now it's all over with and I am doing juuuuuuuust fine.) However my hormonal therapy side effect ain't a damn excuse and I know I hurt some people ( unintentionally.) but USING THAT BY SAYING I PURPOSELY GO AROUND EATING PUPPIES FOR BREAKFAST and that I am a manipulative bastard/someone who use people is just...so incredibly wrong and shitty I have no words. Taking the 3-4 people I had arguments with out of the 14 000 is laughable...( and arguments do happens. No one is perfect.)

- There is only shitty people that use all past arguments between people WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH US to use for your arguments.

- Your own friends wouldn't come to me saying you are taking this way too seriously and way too far if you were in the right, dae.

- You totally assumed I purged you off my blog when I explained I purged my blog of anything not having to do with art or general gifsets and pictures because I had Hiveworks guidelines to follow and since the Tumblr is linked to it: I deleted most of my blog's content that was just replies to people or even my own posts lol. hey there, so i always wondered about the purpose of dean's church confession in 10x16, what the hell were the writers trying to tell us?

Well.... it’s a part of Deans whole storyline since the pilot - a component of the exposition that his 12 years of story that we have been watching is all emotionally driven, a character based arc rather than plot based, all centering around Dean’s journey to self acceptance and self worth.

It’s also in large part a part of my #performing!dean tag and I imagine every meta writer’s performing!dean tag as performing!dean is a large part of this arc, the deconstruction of which leads to his self acceptance and works alongside his self worth.

At this point in 10x16, Dean is realising that he doesn't want to die, he doesn't think he deserves to die...

Remember all Dean’s self hatred, all his self loathing and feelings of worthlessness from earlier seasons? Remember how he constantly put himself in harms way because he felt that any life, anyones, was pretty much more worthy of living than his own?

Well, that has changed by this point. He still cares for others and their lives in a massive way and will still put himself in harms way to protect them but it isn’t with the same nonchalance towards his own life, he isn't actively thinking that his own life is worthless anymore...

Remember this?

Remember how, over the whole show but particularly since Hell Dean has grown, has evolved, not to change himself as such but to change the way he sees and portrays himself to others? How he has started up to 10x16 to let some of his guard down? How only 4 episodes earlier he admitted to liking and listening to Taylor Swift in front of Sam for example? How he has become more emotionally available with Cas since purgatory?

This is all part of the deconstruction of Performing!Dean and his emotional journey to self acceptance... Self acceptance is for me Dean’s whole arc since the pilot. It is with key points such as going to Hell, the introduction of Cas and more recently the introduction of Amara as the exposition but then Mary as her extension as the actual catalyst that we have come to the climax of this arc for Dean in 12x22.

There are moments throughout the show though that of course build to this moment and this is just one of them. The others being for example:

1x09: Dean walks away from Sam to call John about going back to their family home, facing the ghost of Mary, he breaks down and sobs into the phone, revealing that he is an extremely emotional person and family is his weakness but also his biggest focus in life.

2x11: Dean asks Sam why everyone assumes they’re gay, Sam tells Dean he is a bit butch and seems like he is overcompensating (gee, ya think?!).

2x13: Dean and Cassie: basically a huge exposition for the fact that Dean portrays himself as a give-a-shit lothario but when it comes to it he loves and he loves hard, he’s a gentle lover and fell in love with a passionate woman who only left him because she thought it was for his own good and what he wanted, they argue, they stare deeply at each other, they fight, because they care. Sam even tells Dean:

“What's interesting is you guys never really look at each other at the same time. You look at her when she's not looking, she checks you out when you look away. It's just a... just an interesting observation in a... you know... observationally interesting way.”

I even did a gifset parallel with 12x19 of this episode cos dude, exposition much. She’s even called Cassie FFS *Tink looks into the camera*. gifset here.

4x01: Cas looking straight into Dean’s heart and seeing that he doesn't think he deserves to be saved etc. leading to Dean then convincing Cas himself that they deserve to have Free Will, that they can save the world and they do by s5. *sobs a little at how beautiful this story is and it’s only 2 years in*

The whole of season 7: Dean is an alcoholic mourning Cas and worried for his brother then also mourning Bobby, feeling his life is worthless if he can't save and protect his family.

MoC era: Dean loses what makes Dean Dean. He becomes hard, full of anger and pain, without the soft side. This is frightening and he would rather die than become like this.

Season 11: Amara is a complete exposition of Dean’s emotions, as I wrote it a few long posts about Amara, search #amara on my blog but here and here are the main ones. She exposes that he feels love but also shame, that he is holding himself back from something (add this to 11x11′s: follow your heart and all the heart / love themes of the early season right before Cas gets taken away and Dean spends the last half of the season desperately trying to get him back while Amara, all powerful being has to use Cas to get to Dean).

Season 12: Mary is the extension of Amara, she is the catalyst for Dean to finally face himself, all this has built and built to the point where, nearing 40 years of age he finally doesn't want to sublimate anymore, he doesn't want to hide. This post is my explanation for how Mary is exactly what he needed at this point, I think I wrote it mid season, but it was clear by 12x03 that this was her role and of course 12x22 was a great big wave hello and goodbye to Performing!Dean, another meta I wrote called “Dean Winchester is going to die” after 12x11 harked at the fact that this was coming and wasn't it GLORIOUS?!

In his confrontation with Mary in 12x14 Dean essentially tells Mary that he thinks he deserves better, this is a huge deal for Dean - a HUGE deal for his self worth arc. He then in 12x22 addresses the fact that his upbringing wasn't FAIR, that he didn't cope well with it, that it has damaged him. He lets his wall down, he also literally blows down the walls of the bunker with the grenade launcher, the metaphorical taking down his walls, even Toni says it was a metaphor to hammer this home to us...

So yeah 10x16 is one of the key components throughout the years to show us that Dean’s story is all about his emotional journey to self acceptance of his softer side, the side that he hides by using the Performing!Dean facade, also he talks about people, feelings that he wants to experience differently to before or for the first time...  make of that what you will but for me...

In 10x14 just two episodes earlier we have: Dean choosing Cas over Crowley (to give the first blade to) right after a deleted scene in which Crowley and Cas have a whole conversation about Dean being CAS’s boyfriend rather than Crowleys, and Crowley telling Cas that he is running himself into the ground trying to save him, also Cain paralleling Cas with Colette after telling Dean he knows him.

Not long before that we had the burger date where Dean asked Cas to take him out if he got really bad with the MoC then there was the episode where they were heavily paralleled with a married couple where the wife had to let the husband go for fear of killing more people I mean, not to mention the whole Demon!Dean arc where Cas sacrificed himself to save Dean, where Dean knows it and seems to be... clearing a space on his bed but Cas is pulled away by Heaven again, I love this visual metaphor, where then Destiel is actually brought up on screen in 10x05.... you cannot tell me that...

So yeah, this scene in 10x16 is just part of the overall exposition for Dean’s emotional journey throughout the show, it’s a part of the intricately woven pattern of Performing!Dean and Destiel that alongside other aspects of his journey make up a large part of Dean’s overall self acceptance and self worth arc, with the Performing!Dean side climaxing in 12x22, we are just waiting for the second part now...

Well the first name I had for this blog fletaforthemetawin was much more thought out - fleta is an Overw*tch League player I loved watching, and Metawin was a reference to Win Metawin obviously but it was also a reference to gaming meta, gaming wins AND the "Fleta is the Meta" and "Fleta's Meta" thing that was popular ahsjs the change to MixMetawin was just my brain going "Mix ��🤤🤤" + it's shorter! For my main: theweepingmonk: I'm a Daniel Sharm*n simp and snatched the name of his character in Cursed before the show aired. It's a bad show and even if I wasn't a simp his character is the best thing about that show besides Squirrel, never watch it💙

2. any sideblogs? if you have them name them and why you have them. this one + a st*lia blog I abandoned @ acoyotesmate. I have this one bc as funny as it was watching my followers fluctuate like crazy when I was reblogging KDramas and BLS I decided I didn't want to alienate my loyal mutuals, plus I thought it'd be easier to make friends in a new part of tumblr.

The St*lia one cos the Teen W*lf fandom is a nightmare and I wanted a safe space for St*lia shippers/content and I thought the ship was cute, now I just low-key dislike st*les and wholeheartedly love Malia. Anyways sorry to those 800+ followers I abandoned ily you were always so nice to me, but I've moved on.
