Reposted from @habershamforus Aaron Douglas - the “father of Black American art” - was a painter, illustrator and arts educator. A major figure in the Harlem Renaissance, Douglas intended to just pass through Harlem on his way to Paris. He was convinced to stay and developed his career painting murals and creating illustrations that addressed social issues around race and segregation in the US. Douglas forged a path for future African American artists to enter public realm. He lived at the famed epicenter of the Black cultural elite: 409 Edgecombe Ave in Sugar Hill. Other notable residents include: Justice Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. DuBois, Julius Bledsoe, and Walter Francis White. #blackhistorymonth #bhm #aarondouglas #blackart #artist #activist #educator #legend #harlem #ny13 #habershamforcongress #habershamforus #habershamforusforcongress https://www.instagram.com/p/B8TDimUgmMQ/?igshid=t64ewjl1vuln

Reposted from @habershamforus Madam C.J. Walker was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and activist. She made her fortune by creating a line of beauty and hair care products for Black women. Walker was considered the wealthiest African-American businesswoman and self-made woman in America at the time of her death in 1919. She and her daughter, A’Lelia Walker, were pioneers of philanthropy and activism. In July 2019, at the street naming ceremony for the women at 136th Street & Lenox Avenue in Harlem, great-great granddaughter & biographer A’Lelia Bundles told @essence : “As she became successful, she turned around and helped empower other women to become economically independent, but also impressed upon them that their first duty was to humanity. That then turned into women who were empowered to be a part of the civil rights movement. That sense of needing to do something for your community is part of the seed that I think continues to be planted.” We celebrate their legacy today and every day. #blackhistorymonth #bhm #madamcjwalker #aleliawalker #wcw #busnesswomen #activist #philanthropist #harlem #ny13 #habershamforcongress #habershamforusforcongress #habershamforus https://www.instagram.com/p/B8NCV1SAdgU/?igshid=1bumdmjr36fib

Reposted from @habershamforus Black History Month is not only about remembrance. It is also about the things we can achieve when we are equipped with the resources to chart our own path. My hope is that during this month, while celebrating what's best about Black culture, we can also have honest conversations about what is necessary to ensure that African-Americans are well resourced, from the cradle to our beloved elders, so that America's promise can be fully realized by all. Our first highlight of the month is someone who embodied this spirit. A. Phillip Randolph was an American labor unionist, civil rights activist, and politician. Instrumental in encouraging FDR and Truman to issue executive orders to ban discrimination in defense industries and end segregation in the armed services. He was the head of the March on Washington (site of MLK's I have a Dream Speech), and opened an employment office in Harlem to provide job training for southern migrants. We celebrate his perseverance today, and everyday. #blackhistorymonth #bhm #habershamforus #habershamforcongress #ny13 https://www.instagram.com/p/B8Iba4Cgqpe/?igshid=18f1o5s5178hb
