Apple pushes HEIC, which is the same general principle but instead based on H265 (aka newer M4V files). Modern versions of iOS and Android (and Windows and macOS) support both.

Since these formats are still fairly fresh, yeah, a lot of things don’t know what to do with them. Many image editors can’t open them directly yet, many websites that allow you to upload an image have never heard of them, the works.

But that is a side-effect that will vanish as more tools gain support for these newer formats, not the goal. It’s actually really interesting to see parts of the basic building blocks of the web be replaced like that.
