in one of the last days of summer before everyone had to leave again, samy was hosting one last get together at the lake house. everyone was invited so it was fairly crowded in the backyard. somehow, hannah lost the brunette in the mass of people, so she decided to stick close to the drinks instead of trying to fight her way through.

she didn't notice a certain tall brunette making his way towards her until he was basically in her eye line. "hey hananh," james caught her attention.

a quick grin appeared on the girl's lips, "hey hagens. long time no see."

it'd been awhile since the two saw one another. both of their summers were spent in completely different places that they never got a chance to catch up until right now. "yeah, for real. it's been awhile," the boy hummed as he reached for another drink.

"it's good to see you though. i heard your last few months of dev program went well. are you excited for boston?" hannah poked a bit making james flush.

"i am excited. it should be fun getting to be on the same team as the guys again. i've definitely missed playing with them," their gazes swept to where ryan and gabe were talking with their hockey buddies. hannah smiled.

"it's really cool you guys get to be on the same team again. must be really special," she met his gaze again and the boy nodded.

"definitely. how are you feeling after becoming an olympic gold medalist?" james changed the subject and he enjoyed seeing the brunette blush at his question.

"it still feels unreal honestly. i don't feel real, actually."

"well, you killed it like usual. i still don't know how you manage to flip around up there," his praise just deepened the red adorning hannah's cheeks.

"i guess it's just natural at this point. your, uh..the flowers..they were nice," it didn't take an expert for the gymnast to know who was sending her such a huge bouquet of flowers, especially when she didn't know any other hockey player using the number 10.

now it was james's turn to blush, "so you figured it out?"

"come on, i'm not that stupid. you really didn't have to do that."

"you had just won a gold medal. i always think that deserves a huge bouquet of flowers" the hockey player shrugged and hannah blushed again, steering her gaze to the ground.

"well, thank you. it was sweet."

they let a comfortable silence fill between them while taking in the party again. even though they were outside, it was loud and everyone was talking at once. hannah had no idea where samy disappeared to, yet she figured the soccer player was with will like always. it sort of didn't feel real that they were already going to be in their 2nd year of college.

"you know i'd really like to hear more about paris. would you wanna talk inside so it's quieter?" james spoke up again. he looked at her nervously like she was going to say no, but a smile danced on hannah's lips instead.

"yeah, sure."

the two managed to slip away unseen. it was much quieter when they made it back inside and cooler. hannah dug through the fridge for some water knowing she didn't want to be too hung over tomorrow. she handed a bottle to james without asking which he took gratefully. they found themselves in the living room a moment later.

"so what was your favorite part?" the boy wondered, eyeing the space between them without being too obvious about it.

"can i say everything? i loved all of it," the girl giggled.

hannah and james talked for what seemed like forever in that living room. the gymnast gave him an entire rundown of her time at the olympics and all of the cool people she met. she definitely rambled, but james didn't mind one bit. he liked hearing her talk, especially after not talking to her all summer.

that space between them on the couch got smaller and smaller too because hannah would jump up and around when she talked, so naturally, she moved herself closer each time until there was basically no space left between them.

it had to have been nearly 11:30 by then. people had gone inside, but neither james nor hannah noticed because they were too busy talking. no one else really noticed them either because they were just too drunk to notice their friends really hitting it off with each other.

when hannah stopped to take a breath and just close her mouth for a second her nad james were inches apart. her knee kept brushing his thigh and her head rested on the back of the couch so she was basically looking up at him because james had his elbow propped up to support his head. he stared at her while she stared at him realizing just how long they'd been talking.

that fire that's been ignited since james met hannah almost two years ago lit up the longer he stared at her and he knew she felt it too.

hannah knew what he wanted. maybe she wanted it too, but that voice inside of her head was preventing her from moving any closer or further. that voice that always told her she didn't need a boyfriend because it'd just throw her entirely off. she didn't even know how to function with a real boyfriend because all of her past relationships had always been stupid flings that didn't matter to her.

this mattered to her though and she knew that it wasn't gonna be some fling if she let herself indulge.

james mattered to her and she was finally starting to understand that.

"this might be super dumb, but can i kiss you?" the hockey player asked and everything hannah thought she knew went out the window because he asked and no guy had really done that before with her.

she was leaning up before she could even stop herself and james met her in the middle. their lips collided in a very passionate kiss that definitely showed all of the pent up tension that had built between the the last few years.

she could feel him breaking her walls down and letting himself into a space she's tried so hard to keep him out of.

when they finally pulled away both of them were speechless.

"so.."

"so.."

an awkward silence wedged its way between them.

"i should get some sleep. it's late. it's been a long day. thanks for talking..or letting me yap your ear off," and just as fast as hannah's walls came down, they went right back up.

she stumbled up while james quickly grew confused at her sudden change in attitude.

"night, j," she mumbked over her shoulder before he could even say anything.

"night hannah.." she was long gone to even hear him.

UGH such a good question and i'll have to say will because he does not care at all about being affectionate and because him and samy have been teased for so long, he doesn't care anymore about the teasing and he just does anything for her even when he knows he'll get chirped at later

like he's just a lover boy publicly and privately.

but this is not to say the other guys aren't the biggest simps. i thnk mack, gabe, and james feel more comfortable in private and aren't huge on PDA and they're still getting used to the chirping so they tend to shy awway a bit more

the brunette sitting beside samy had been on james' mind since the start of the game when he spotted her up in the stands. he'd never seen her before, but he literally could not take his eyes of her as creepy as that sounded. anytime his gaze swept across the stands, he always went back to her.

james was somewhat close with the u18s and he knew how close some of them were to samy and if samy knew whoever that girl was, then maybe they knew her too. the brunette approached will once the game was finished.

"hey smitty," james began, catching will's attention.

"hey haggy. what's up?" the blonde wondered as he threw his shirt on.

"good game tonight. you guys played well," james started slow because he knew it would be weird if he started right with the girl.

will smiled, "thanks, you guys weren't bad either. first games always take some getting adjustment and getting back into it."

"yeah, for real. i don't think i've ever seen so many people at the game before," james hummed and will nodded.

"it's mostly samy. she makes her soccer teammates come to the games sometimes," the older boy smiled as he mentioned her. all of the u17s also knew about the dynamic between will and samy, mainly because the u18s told them, so james smirked seeing will's smile.

"she must be pretty convincing then to get them to come out. were all of those girls her teammates?" the younger hockey player was trying to be as subtle as possible about asking who that girl was.

"uh..i think so? most of them were at least. why? you got a crush or something?" will smirked when he noticed the way james' cheeks heated up at his teasing.

"no, i was just wondering.." the boy mumbled.

"come on, you can tell me. i won't tell," will ribbed some more.

"okay, whatever. maybe. the one girl sitting next to samy," james finally admitted in small embarrassment.

"you mean hannah? duker's twin sister?"

a small light bulb went off above james' head. duker's sister? he didn't even know tyler was a twin. "he has a twin?" the question fell from james' lips faster than he could stop it.

will laughed, "yeah. you didn't know? her and samy are like best friends. they're gonna be roommates at mich together next year. i dunno, you could poke samy about it if you want. i don't know hannah a whole lot."

so james did just that. he found samy in the lobby when he was finished changing. he also didn't really know her that well, but he knew she was super nice and all of the u18s liked her.

"hey, samy," the younger brunette began.

"hey, you're james right?" the girl wondered when she met his gaze and he nodded.

"that'd be me," he hummed.

"good job out there today by the way. you guys were doing well," the younger hughes praised and james smiled. that meant a lot coming from her knowing how huge of a hockey fanatic and former player she was.

"thank you, i appreciate that. this might be such a strange question, but..i wanted to come bother you about uh..hannah?" james just had to be blunt with this one. samy's eyebrow raised and a tiny smirk formed on her lips.

"hannah? tyler's twin?"

"yeah, her," james nodded.

"well..she's tyler's twin. she's going to umich with me next fall. she's a gymnast. she does homeschool because of always being at the gym. this is actually the first game i've gotten her to if you can believe it. she's pretty chill. are you looking to.." samy trailed off with that knowing smirk still making the boy in front of her flush in more embarrassment.

"i..i mean..maybe, yeah," james flushed.

"i can give you her number if you wanna text her. be warned though, she doesn't really do relationships or have much interest in being in one. she's always got gymnastics on her mind," samy giggled and pulled her phone out to find the girl's contact.

"sorry, you don't even know me and i'm ribbing you about your friend," the hockey player mumbled as he watched samy type hannah's number into his phone.

"it's fine, don't worry. i think it's funny. you're bold to ask, so i respect it," the girl grinned.

james stared down at hannah's new contact now, already thinking about texting her. "hopefully when we talk again i won't be asking for some girl's number," he flushed again when him and samy met gazes.

"don't sweat it, hagens. i'll definitely see you next game since you know i'm always here," samy chuckled and james laughed a bit. he definitely knew why she was always at the games and that reason happened to walk out of the locker room at the perfect time.

"so i see you asked," will mumbled when he saw james and samy standing together.

"just wanted to know," james shrugged.

"hey, i respect the game, man. i'm not judging," will laughed.

when james got back home that night he sent his first text with the hope that hannah would reply and not think he was completely weird for asking for her number from her best friend.

Ok wait cute idea what if after the Olympics Hannah got sent a huge bouquet of flowers it was from James but she didn’t know so he just put is jersey number on it as his initial and she was just so confused who that person could be and how sweet someone could be.

but i think hannah would be so surprised and confused at first until she slowly put the pieces together that she knew no one else actively using that number except for james. and she figured he'd send her something.

"honey, these came for you," mrs. duke said and hannah wandered into the dining space. her eyes widened whe saw a huge bouquet of flowers sitting in the center.

"who sent these?" hannah looked at her mom who was as confused as she was.

"i don't know. i didn't look for a card. the guy showed up with them this morning while you were out practicing."

the brunette leaned in to smell the orange tiger lily's which were her favorite flower. it had to be someone she sort of knew because not any strangers knew what her favorite flower was. the girl examined the pot or the stems for some sort of little notecard that always came with gifted flowers.

she started losing some hope until a white, square card stock was wedged between two stems. the gymnast grabbed it, expecting a name but only becoming more confused when she just read a number. the number 10 to be more exact.

"find anything?" mrs. duke wondered.

"just this small piece of card stock with the number 10 on it. who's that sweet to send such a big bouquet of my favorite flower?" hannah wondered.

"10? that doesn't make sense. 10 what?" even mrs. duke was confused.

"i don't know," hannah was stumped and tried looking for more clues that told her who sent such a gift.

"10 like a number for a sport?" her mom's words made something click in hannah's head.

there were few people who knew her favorite flower and even fewer people who wore number 10 on their jersey. the only person hannah really knew about was a certain someone who's intials were j.h. and the flowers certainly weren't from jack hughes. jack's number wasn't even close to 10.

the only person hannah could think of was james hagens who did know her favorite flower and would do something like this like sending a huge thing of flowers.

a tiny smile spread across her lips at the thought.

james and hannah have a bit of an extensive history

they've known each other for four years after meeting when james moves to plymouth for the usntdp

hannah doesn't really pay much mind to james when they're in plymouth because she's so focused on gymnastics and being at the gym

they only really have conversations in passing or when they're in large groups, but she does know of him

james, however, does notice hannah

the first time she's at one of the games he takes an immediate interest to her and starts asking around to figure out who she is

when he figures out she's tyler duke's twin sister and is good friends with samy, he tries to get an in, but nothing really happens

when the class of 2023 graduates and goes to college, things sort of fall off for a year and hannah isn't really thinking of any of the hockey players

with the olympics that summer, she's focusing on doing well and getting acclimated to her new team at umich

hannah and james don't see one another again until the usntdp play umich and samy drags her to go to catch up with the younger boys and obviously watch tyler, ethan, and mark play

when the game finishes hannah hangs back with samy so they can say hi to everyone

this is when james and hannah quickly reconnect and spark up a conversation with one another while samy talks to teddy and cole

it's pretty obvious they hit it off and hannah agrees to give james her number after him pining over her last year

she finally starts noticing him because they start texting and interacting more on social media

samy still occasionally goes to the dev games when she's free so hannah tags along claiming she just wants to watch the game and definitely not see james afterwards

that next summer after her freshman year, they get pretty busy with hannah trying out for team usa at the olympic trials and james is busy with u18 worlds

obviously james has the olympics on, specifically gymnastics, and watches hannah win her olympic gold medal for bars (her speciality) and team win

they text all that summer while hannah's in paris and james is constantly congratulating her for how well she's doing

they don't see one another until the end of the summer when samy invites people to the lake house for one last get together before school sweeps all of them away again

they talk pretty much the entire night catching up and talking about their summers

by the end of that night, they're kissing but hannah's never really been into relationships so it puts a bit of a strain on their relationship

they're still thinking about one another when they're back at college, so on a whim, hannah flies out to boston with samy to see him when samy goes for her exhibition game

they confess everything in that short trip which finally leads to them getting together!

she's close with all of her siblings but not as close as samy is with her brothers or will with grace

they love each other obviously and they talk everyday, but hannah and tyler bicker more than anything with one another — it's one of those sibling relationships where we bicker, but i'll drop everything for you if you really needed it

her birthday is july 19th, 2005! (so she's a year and 4 months older than james) (yes this is tyler's actually birthday we're just pretending for the fic that he was born in 2005 and not 2004)

she's been into gymnastics since she could walk basically and her mom put her in as soon as she was cartwheeling instead of walking around the house

she really fell in love with it and built a strong community within gymnastics as she grew up and got better and better

she was a level 10 by 13 years old

their family moves to michigan when dylan begins the dev program in 2019, so she joins a gym in plymouth and commits to homeschooling full time so she has more time in the gym

she quickly becomes very independent as she gets older because it's not that she has a bad relationship with her parents, their devotion just gets split a lot because of all of their kids doing different things

her independency is what causes hannah to not really be interested in dating or having a boyfriend because she really learns on how to rely on herself and be there for herself instead of someone else doing that for her

so when james comes into her life it's all very foreign and somewhat new to her, especially when things start getting a little more serious

obviously she's had flings with other guys and "dated", but none of it was ever serious to her and she was just doing it for fun honestly

sort of got the reputation as heartbreaker because she was always the one to break things off

winning an olympic gold medal has always been her dream though and when it finally happens she's in such disbelief

when her and james do become official and she gives him a chance, they decide quickly to keep things more private

hannah has never been once to just announce to everyone what her relationship status is and who she's dating

james helps her not to get in her head too much and gently teaches her that it's okay to rely on people every once in awhile

it's a hard thing for hannah to learn, but she opens up to him more and lets him into her little bubble

everyone calls her a cougar (in a loving way) when they finally find out

he's always been really into hockey because of his brother and he really looks up to michael

when he's in michigan for dev program, that's where he meets "the gang" and hannah quickly catches his attention when she goes to one of the games

the older guys didn't necessarily intimidate james, but they were older and he didn't really know tyler duke that well

but he talked around with gabe, ryan, and will knowing hannah was close to samy and maybe they could get him his in

because him and michael have always relied on one another, james was baiscally the opposite of independent

he always liked doing things with people and being around people, so hannah being independent and not needing anyone was hard for him to get through to at first

it pretty much started as a puppy crush and one james didn't have much hope in really taking off

plus, a bunch of guys told him she was a "heartbreaker" and he shouldn't get himself involved if he didn't want his heart to get broken

he was a bit disappointed him and hannah hardly talked before she graduated except in group settings or in passing when he'd try to strike up a conversation with her

i love the idea that james had a little crush on her first and was kinda chasing her for a while before she came around

yassss it's very much he fell first and harder core. hannah's also been around hockey boys all of her life so she never gave them much mind always being focused on gymnastics and going to the gym instead of really coming to games until samy starts begging her to come with her so she isn't alone.

james definitely sees her at one of the games in his first year of dev and thinks she's pretty and wonders who she is. after asking around he learns she's dyan's little sister and tyler's twin. he wants to get to know her more but she's never consistent with what games she's at so he kind of doesn't really get a chance besides talking to her in passing or in a group setting.

Imagine Hannah really didn’t notice him that much until last year when Michigan played against the USA ndtp and he sees her after the game and they just talk and be starts flirting with her more. She noticed and flirts back she ends up giving him her number. That’s when it all started

YES i literally used your idea for the au background but i think it makes so much sense for them because it's probably the only time they see each other once hannah goes to college and she finally starts noticing james and is like wait..maybe i do like him 😏

idk what the timeline is necessarily for the Hannah and james au but I could definitely see another reason for Hannah being more guarded since she really saw how in love samy was with Will seeing as she was her roommate and probably overheard sm of their phone calls or seeing their interactions and then when they broke up it probably made her nervous to let herself go in a relationship because of how heart broken her best friend was

also true!! samy and will’s breakup happen the summer james and hannah get together so the whole summer hannah definitely sees how hurt samy was and it hurt her that she couldn’t be there for her because she was in paris competing but yes this also plays a huge part as well!

just a mix of super independent younger daughter + seeing her best friend get her heart broken just really messed with hannah’s perception and idea of relationships because well..what if she started relying on someone and then they just left too?

hannah really tried saving herself of that hurt by never letting herself indulge too far before breaking it off.

and that’s why she worried about really being with james at first because what if he just left too? and because he was someone that meant a lot to her, she didn’t want to put herself in that position to lose him either. it was definitely a really hard line for her to walk and not an easy one to figure out if she should let herself fully fall into idea of being with him.

plus of course she knew that stereotype about hockey players and obviously none of the ones she was friends with were like that, but she just didn’t really know and wanted to save herself from that hurt.

also, she believed being in a relationship would hold her back and lose her focus on gymnastics, especially with the olympics this past summer. she couldn’t lose focus after working so hard to be there.

im already hooked on the james and hannah au and have some thoughts :)) i feel like they’d understand each other so well bc they’ve both like accomplished things before going to this respective colleges and hannah obviously has a lot of pressure to succeed at school and at the Olympics because once you get gold that kinda becomes the standard yk? and james also with being the projected first overall and also winning gold himself I feel like he can definitely understand

yes i agree 100%!! i think it’s something hannah slowly starts understanding the more they get to know one another, especially now.

they both definitely hold a lot of weight and pressure on their shoulders and for hannah, it’s something she definitely doesn’t like people seeing. she tries to hold herself to such a high standard, but james definitely sees right through her because he feels all of the same pressure as well, especially now leading up to the draft this summer and the news continuing to talk about him.

i think once hannah realizes how much her and james are alike it’s easier for her to break down her walls around him and he’s probably the first person (besides samy) that she can freely talk about the pressure on her shoulders from fans and her parents because she also feels like she needs to hold herself to the standard that her brothers are achieving in hockey.

they both definitely help one another just slow down and take it day by day instead of letting all of the thoughts consume them to the point that they can’t think about anything else.
