When Worlds Collide - The Early Merger Era of USCR

I remember when I was in high school I would always try and get my school's "Car Club" up and going. I'd post flyers, give announcements over the PA and ask the teacher lending us the room for help with ideas. Unfortunately it was only ever me and one other classmate who would occupy the classroom at lunch, never really finding a single person to share my rather obsessive interest with. There was this one other kid, a senior at the time, that would be at one of the computers in the class room looking at spotters guides of some sorts. At the time I was solely a NASCAR fan, not really paying much attention to other forms of motorsport. I knew Super GT existed thanks to Gran Turismo 5, and of course there was Formula 1 but I never feigned too much interest in it. So when I peeked at his screen I noticed that it was what known as the Tudor United Sports Car Championship at the time. Of course, I didn't know what it actually was at that time. My small little NASCAR infested brain had never heard of this series before -- and that's because it was a completely new idea, birthed from years of two separate American sports car series competing for the same audience throughout the 00s and early 10s. The American Le Mans Series was much like the rest of the ACO sanctioned championships across the globe, using state of the art prototypes and factory GT efforts to fill their grids. However, by the end of the ALMS era there was a clear struggle to fill the prototype grids, with only a literal couple of P1 entrants running in any given race weekend.

The Grand-Am Road Racing Series was the complete opposite of the sleek and sexy cars ready to travel to France every June. Their top class were these tube frame "prototurtles", which in their first year looked more Florida man rather than Florida endurance classic. However, what they did have in their pocket was the iconic Daytona 24, which throughout its years would play host to multiple big time NASCAR superstars hopping in to turn right for the first time in a few good months. Their GT cars were also a bit non-orthodox for that matter too -- whereas you had Porsches and Corvettes battling it out for top honors literally shoulder checking each other Grand Am boasted Pontiac GXPs and Mazda6s... though, admittedly they were also tube frame based machines.

So when the merger news came about, obviously it was a pretty big shock to everyone's system. I mean, how the heck would these two completely different types of series fit in with one another given that Daytona Prototypes were literally pieces of metal put together to look somewhat like a race car in comparison to the prohibitively expensive prototypes that literally no one could afford to run these days... but maybe that's what sports car racing needed. After years of having to recover from the sudden decline of the sport (thanks Bernie) everyone was kinda doing whatever the hell in their own corner, with the BPR scurrying off into their own corner trying to make their own flavor of sports car racing before getting blown up by some guys from Stuttgart that would create so much baggage for Stephane Ratel that he garnered a hate boner for factory teams, the ACO still hanging onto the Le Mans 24 with its ever changing prototype category that once literally got gamed by those same German assholes from Stuttgart a few years earlier, the guys in Japan having to make a completely new regulation after their prototype series just kinda died off which even led one team fielding a 962C against some Skylines... America just kind of had to go their own way. And we all know the trope of the USA saving the world.

I mean, the mere sight of seeing these brute beasts with their loud and brash V8 motors running alongside these sleek and sexy prototypes is enough to get anyone the least bit interested just for the weird factor. The racing it gave wasn't too bad either.

The premise of these awkward Daytona Prototypes bumbling through the bumps of Sebring just like their European brethren is worth the price of admission itself. And we haven't even gotten to the rest of the field! You had the infamous Prototype Challenge category that would provide the race with its full course yellow quotas and almost down right dangerous levels of idiocy, but they're just honestly trying their best. Of course, there was also the ever iconic GTLM field with multiple factory GT teams duking it out going all touring car on each other battling for 2nd to last, while the GTD class derived from the Grand-AM GT category had its own oddities that would be simply wrong to look over. The 911 GT America is a car that seems to come out of someone's fever dream that I wouldn't be surprised if it came up in a /r/ThomasThePlankEngine post. There was also the R8 LMS with the teeny ass wing. I don't know why I remember that, but it's always so funny to see that specific car show up in Forza games when there's literally newer R8s to feature.

Even the calendar itself was a "greatest hits" of both series, with both sides having to play on each other's grounds with the Daytona 24 and the 12 hours of Sebring being the big crown jewel events. Of course, you also had the rest of the endurance races that both series managed to carry over, the 6 Hours of the Glen from the Grand-Am side and the Petit Le Mans over on ALMS' side. Long Beach and Belle Isle were two street courses that both series brought along that would prove to be marquee events, and something of an interesting tidbit that I would be remiss to mention would be the Prototype Challenge only race at Kansas Speedway. Yeah. That layout. You know the one.

The Daytona Prototype mix of cars lasted up until the end of 2016, which would bring the beginning of the new era of sports car racing. While I don't have great opinions on the DPi platform, it nevertheless influenced the current resurgence of the prototype category, whilst the growth of the global GT3 regulation made up by our good friend Stephane Ratel would occupy the GTD category and would go on to encompass the entire field, becoming one of the many influences that would make it replace the declining GTE class as the top global grand touring class in the world. Indeed, the United part of the United Sports Car Championship really did become reality -- though it probably had a far bigger outreach than they initially expected. Or maybe it was their intention from the get-go. Who knows. Anyways, take a look at this Daytona Prototype.

2008 G6 GXP Quick Tour/Overview

They did sell them with limiters on them. We know which one it is it is not this one and there is a black one. George Washington starts out with a black horse. One might be the Pontiac and that one is our sons as well and they trade off the color but not the Horse. There's other things going on but this is very important and he looked up the price and he found prices from 3500 to around$12,000. It really matters on the condition and the mileage this one he says he had 25,000 miles it's in great shape but he modified it so it's probably about $10,000 that's what happens he touched the brake calipers and structural things except he could probably get 15 to 20 thousand dollars. But that's in certain neighborhoods in areas this thing really moves out he's got new tires and rims and he's done something to the motor and it's not major and a little to the exhaust and it goes over 200. And he said I don't think I've been that fast with it but he has. Fic Premise: Fic will start with an established soulmate Omegaverse relationship between a civilian (Omega Fem) Author insert and an avenger (Alpha) Black Widow. Both of them are waiting for their third soulmate. At some point, after some gratuitous smut and fluff, Reader is kidnapped by Wanda during an engagement with the avengers (Hydra removed her other alpha's mark?), and Wanda edits her memories of Reader to make her believe Natasha was her abuser. Finally, after some more gratuitous fluff and smut and angst on the side of Natasha, all three soulmates are united. 

Author's Note and Disclaimer: This is my absolute first fic. After consuming through some of the absolute fantastic works here regarding WandaNat, I thought I'd contribute my own to the treasure trove of Tumblr. This work is in various tenses, and I've only really written essays and reports so the prose is weird.

After your breakfast, you took one of Natasha's unlaundered cardigans and tried the sleeves loosely around your neck, and headed to the library on the common floor, hoping to do some digital sketches for your Etsy store. It was a small income compared to Natasha's, but it was about the only work Natasha would allow, as it didn't require you to leave the compound. (She doesn't like you leaving without her to keep you safe)

The art also helped during her long stints away, giving you something to focus on rather than the tendrils of loneliness that seemed to overcome  Omegas, apart from their soulmates for extended periods. Your current work was for a Dungeons and dragons original Character: An Orcish rogue, a strange combination but an interesting one all the same.

You'd taken off the cardigan and tied it around your neck, occasionally dipping your chin into the knot you'd made with the sleeves and inhaling Natasha's comforting scent. You were engrossed with your drawing until a notification flashed atop the screen of your drawing pad with a text from Natasha. 

1:19 pm: Hey, love, we're about to break for lunch. Shield catered, and they've got (y/fav food). Thinking about picking some up and eating with you?

You replied: 

1:20 pm: Natasha... We've talked about this. You're always welcome to drop in on me, especially if it's with (y/fav lunchtime savory food). I'm in the library. See you soon? 

almost immediately, her response popped up with the chime you'd chosen as her text message tone

1:20 pm: On my way! 

You sat in your beanbag chair, still working on your sketch. Until Natasha appeared with a tray with all the fixings for your favorite meal, she left it at the closest table to you and walked over, planting a quick kiss on the crown of your head. 

"I missed you." She whispered as she offered her hand to help you out of the beanbag chair and carried you bridal style before setting you in her lap. As Natasha snuck whiffs of your scent gland between morsels, you each picked from the platter of (Y/Fav food). The meal went quickly and in comfortable silence until you reached for the pudding cup of chocolate mousse. Natasha reached for your arm, holding it still. 

Her other hand brought the mouse closer to you both, picked up a dessert spoon, took a spoonful of it, and brought it to your mouth, dragging the spoon across your lips, pleading for entry. 

You're heart burst with joy at the display of affection from Natasha, and you acquiesced to her silent request parting your lips for the silky dessert. She let go of your arm and wrapped her arm around your waist, pulling your back flush with her chest. And you shared the dessert. After you'd finished both pudding cups, you turned to straddle her. You smiled, kissing away a spot of chocolate mousse on the corner of her lips. "That was new...any particular reason you felt like feeding me? Not that I didn't like it. 

She blushed. I'm not so sure myself. It's been so long, and I still don't have a full grip on these instincts I've had to repress for so long. But I definitely enjoyed that, having you so close and the inner Alpha purrs when providing for you so. And the spoon makes me think of other things that mouth of yours can do."

You smirked at her last comment.

"My mouth, hmm? Well, I'm sure my strong and providing Alpha has to get back to their recruits. I'm going to keep sketching for a few hours. Then, I'll meet you back home for dinner? And who knows what my mouth might do then?" 

The rest of the day passed with you sending a few first sketches to your customers for review, replying to Etsy messages, and scrolling through shopping sites for a new drawing stylus. 

As the natural light ebbed with the sun's setting, you moved back to you and asked Friday to organize ingredients and additional yeast for Pirozhki as you didn't have time for the dough to take 3 hours to rise. 

You hummed (Y/fav song) as you shredded cabbage, carrot, diced onion, and dill while waiting for the dough to rise. Then, cooked off the beef mince and added your vegetables and spices and created your Piroshki, secretly hoping that her favorite food might put Natasha in a safe enough headspace to feed you again. 

As you were frying to second to last batch, the lift doors pinged at your entry foyer, and a drained looking Natasha walked into the kitchen. You were focused on fishing out your little hand pies, so you only look up in time to feel your red-headed ninja's arms wrap around your waist, her nose making a beeline towards your scent gland. She pulls you towards her and inhales. 

"Hey, love, hot oil on the fire here. Let me finish up, and I can cuddle with you and a plate of Piroshki with siracha, and you can tell me all about the brainless shield agents."

She planted a kiss over your scenting gland, released you and swiped a Piroshki in a single movement. She took a bite and groaned with delight. Seeing your Alpha's stress momentarily evaporate by your doing made your inner omega sing. 

You carefully fry the last batch of your little hand pies. And leave them to drain. Take the cooling ones onto a plate and squirt a  good dollop of sriracha into a small bowl. You moved to your living area and settled into Natasha's side. Presenting her the plate of Piroshki as her arm came round your shoulders. 

"I made your favorite Nat. Were the dunderheads extra dundery today?" 

Y-you didn't have to do this (Y/n). These are phenomenal...What did I in a past life to deserve you?" 

You move to straddle her putting your forehead against hers. "Natasha! You are deserving of love. I know about the blood in your ledger. But you escaped that. You do work to protect people now. I don't know if I believe in reincarnation, but you are worthy of love ... You are WORTHY not because of any past lives but because of you. Okay? Please, I need you to know that. I can't wait to meet the third member of our soul-bound. To show you that it's not just me who sees you this way. That you are loved truly and wholly loved." 

"We are soulmates our goal should be a never ending positive feedback loop of making each other's life better. I wanted to do this for you, just like you wanted to bring me lunch. So I'll hear none of this disparagement." You finish your rant, slumping your shoulders sadly.

you pulled away from her, giving her some space as she breathed in deeply. "I never mean to doubt your love (Y/n/n). But, it is hard for me. I can't relax with you. I have to force myself to work against what they taught me. It's hard being in fully conscious control, like when you think about breathing. I'm sorry if I come off as hot and cold. I-I'm working on being a better soulmate for you and wherever our third might be. It's hard, but I want to be the soulmate that you deserve."

It was a surprising insight into the mind of your Alpha. "You've come so far, Nat. I'm proud of you, so freaking proud of you. Is there anything I can do to make it easier? Make it so you can relax? I know relationships aren't always easy, but I don't want to be suffocating you."

She bent her neck, seeking out your mating gland and inhaled. "I really don't know, but please call me out on it. I can't be better if you don't tell me when I fail." Natasha said, nuzzling your mating gland and inhaling your scent. 

She flipped you around, keeping you on her lap and just kept you close. She quickly turned the TV on, playing the most recent episode of Sense 8. And just held you. You occasionally took a Piroshki and nibbled at it as Natasha moved to massage the base of your neck. You sink into your Alpha. As her fingers keep working their magic, you begin keening as the stress in your neck. 

 "Kotenok, what have I told you about keeping a proper posture when working? I already hate having to control you by not letting you have a normal job. But I don't want to stop you from doing this too." 

She planted kisses on the back of your neck. "I think you need to be retaught a lesson Detka, what do you say, what should I do with my bad girl?" 

You groaned. Punishment wasn't what you were looking for tonight. But your inner omega was shuddering at disobeying your Alpha's commands regarding self-care and was screaming that punishment would let you vent the guilt.

"Umm, another round of book holding?" You whisper out as her fingers dance their healing work across your neck, easing tension from a week of sketching. Your mind flashed to the hours of edging as you rode Natasha's strap. You held books on your head. Impaling yourself on the fake cock, repeatedly, chasing your peak. As an Internet veteran and draw-person, I really need to ask: what anime influenced you and many online artists circa 2000s? There's a specific style from those early 2000s webcomics and fanart I'm looking for and trying to replicate, and your old art fit in that "style", in my opinion. Thank you!

It’s hard to narrow it down, but it’s also not that hard to narrow it down. Anime was a much, much smaller industry back then. The “boom” was just beginning thanks to efforts by the Scifi Channel and Cartoon Network to bring anime to television in timeslots that people would actually watch.

So here’s your crash course in casual anime history, I guess, from someone who definitely isn’t like... obsessed with anime. Or isn’t anymore, but was back then.

For me, it all kind of started with, like... Dragon Ball, and this was a show that struggled to gain any traction at first. Where I lived, it aired at 5am on Sunday mornings. If you knew a kid that watched Dragon Ball, there was a solidarity there like, “Yup, you get it.”

Then DiC got the license to Sailor Moon and started airing it in the weekday morning slot I would typically describe as “right before you catch the bus.” You’d wake up around 6am, maybe 6:15, and watch whatever was on at 6:30 while you ate breakfast. As the credits were rolling, you’d head out to catch the school bus. Sailor Moon was what I remember doing that with the most. That combined with Dragon Ball formed my foundational interest in anime.

Around this time (1995, 1996) you were starting to see anime start to seep in to the mainstream elsewhere. There was a commercial I remember for, like, an anthology of anime classics like Akira...

And, y’know, when you’re like, 14 or 15 and you see a commercial like this -- cartoons! With blood! And nudity! It’s like, holy crap. Most of the classics we know today (Akira, Ghost in the Shell) were only really available via mail order like this back then.

More shows started getting localized for TV, too, like Ronin Warriors was one a lot of my friends got in to. It was considered “The Manly Sailor Moon.” And then there was, of course, Samurai Pizza Cats. Eventually Saban stopped dubbing Dragon Ball altogether and moved straight over to Dragon Ball Z, and that gained enough popularity that I think it eventually shook it out of its Sunday Morning time slot to somewhere a little more visible by general audiences.

Coming in to 1997 and 1998, anime was really starting to gain some momentum. The Scifi Channel had begin doing their “Saturday Anime” show, which aired at 3am every Friday Night/Saturday Morning. They probably figured it was one of the only ways they could get away with showing violent cartoons.

For me, this was where I got my first “real” taste of anime. They had a stable of about 5 or 10 movies and OVAs they’d run. Venus Wars, Vampire Hunter D, Project A-KO, Robot Carnival, Tenchi Muyo In Love (my favorite), Project L.I.L.Y. Cat, Beautiful Dreamer, Galaxy Express 999, Fatal Fury The Motion Picture, Record of Lodoss War, Dominion Tank Police, Roujin-Z, Demon City Shinjiku, Gall Force...

That felt like the bandaid got ripped off. Suddenly we were all buzzing about anime. Hey, have you heard about this movie called Ninja Scroll? There’s hardcore sex in it! No American movie, live action or not, could ever match the body horror of Akira! Hey, does anyone remember Robotech from the 80′s? That was actually anime, too! Wow!

Cartoon Network was smart enough to take notice and snatched up the rights to air Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z at reasonable, non-morning hours, and they dug out Voltron and put together a simple block of anime. I don’t even think it necessarily had a name, it was just an hour or maybe 90 minutes of anime a day, and it exploded. Right place, right time. So Cartoon Network expanded.

They added more classic anime, and some shows that were similar in tone, and called it Toonami. Robotech, Ronin Warriors, The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, Reboot, Thundercats...

And this became the place to watch anime. Which is when we enter the era you’re asking about, the early 2000′s. This is where it starts to feel like a little too much to cover, because it came hot, heavy, and fast. There was a thirst for anime that was hard to quench because production companies were small and choosy about what they’d dub, but at the same time, a sort of gold rush was starting.

When I think of peak, classic-era Toonami, the stuff that really influenced me artistically, it was shows like Outlaw Star, Ruroni Kenshi, and Gundam Wing. I’m sure I’d also have friends speak highly of Big-O, G-Gundam, and Yu Yu Hakusho, three shows I never really got in to.

Eventually, Cartoon Network (and Williams Street, then called Ghost Planet Industries) began to realize that there was a growing library of anime they couldn’t show in the afternoon because it was too intense for the kids. There was also an undoubtedly vocal contingent of anime fans who were frustrated when their favorite shows had to be edited for broadcast. This gave birth to Toonami: The Midnight Run, the precursor to what would eventually become Adult Swim. The Midnight Run became home to uncut (or simply less-cut) episodes of afternoon shows that restored blood, alcoholic references, and the few cases of more extreme violence.

Midnight Run started getting exclusive shows, too. When I think about what Midnight Run (and later Adult Swim) was known for, it was shows like Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and again, though it wasn’t really something I saw a ton of, Paranoia Agent.

Other networks did try to cash in on the anime craze. I think Tech TV/G4 tried to get in on things with Serial Experiments Lain and a few other shows, but to be honest, it never hit as hard as Toonami did. Then there was obviously the work of guys like 4KIDS, with the Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon shows on Saturday Morning, but those felt noticeably different in vibe and in tone (something that only got more pronounced when Kids WB started a Saturday Morning Toonami block that was even more aggressively sanitized than what could be shown on Cartoon Network).

Beyond broadcast TV, the stuff I remember being popular among my circle of friends were things like Tenchi Universe, Ranma 1/2, Slayers, Saber Marionette, and.... like, Di Gi Charat and Chobits? This was probably right around the era of Azumanga Daioh, too.

Unfortunately, much past 2003 or 2004 is where I started falling off of anime. The feeling of it being “new” and “special” was starting to wear off, and there was enough coming out that the standard of quality was beginning to drop. Whereas small studios like ADV and Manga Corps. could only afford to bring out the best of the best, we were starting to get junk like Duel Masters, Rozen Maiden and Tenchi Muyo GXP.

I remember friends speaking highly of shows like Bleach (heh), .hack, Full Metal Panic, Midori Days, Tenjo Tenge, Yakitate Japan, Eureka Seven, and Air Gear, but I can’t tell you anything about them, personally.

Either way, I’m sure I’ve given you more than enough to chew on.

Toonami just can’t handle anything past 11:00p, can’t it? My Hero Academia gets moved from 10:30p to 3:30a in what is perhaps the biggest shaft a show has ever gotten. I can see why they’d do it for something like Naruto: Shippuden or Tenchi Muyo GXP, but My Hero Academia?? The critically acclaimed anime starring everyone’s favorite frog girl, Tsuyu Asui?? Weird. I guess in Adult Swim’s defense, it’s not a dub premiere, it’s something widely available on Hulu. Still feels like it really shoots any idea of a rerun down.

Sword Art Online and Lupin the 3rd Part V move up half an hour to make room for The Promised Neverland’s replacement: Food Wars. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin moves in to 3:00a to replace Hunter X Hunter.

The Venture Bros. leaves the post-Toonami lineup while Gemusetto Machu Picchu, Ballmastrz: 9009, and Tigtone air half an hour later.
