rewatching sex ed s1 and bowled over by how much of a gwen-65 look/attitude maeve has and how much of a resemblance jackson has to darius leclerc, super obscure first boyfriend of gwen-616.
and i rly want darius-65 now. like. what would he be like. would he still be a big man on campus type or would he get loserfied like gwen was. would we retcon them into being a couple back in high school back when gwen first got her powers? would he be a civilian love interest? given that he has his own uncle ben moment with his dad dying, could he be a superhero? or what about a villain who blames ghost-spider for his dad’s death? the potential!

for @spxdergwens
One of the best things about being an Avenger had been the automatic friendships it came with. Sort of. Not really. The Avengers were generally naturally sort of suspicious people—came with all of the attempts on their lives and unpleasant origin stories, really—so they weren’t always great at friends, but they were good at camaraderie. You sort of fell into easy patterns with people once you’d saved the world with them a couple of times. It wasn’t that she didn’t see them anymore since the SRP, but it was different now. They didn’t see each other as much——didn’t live out of each others’ pockets——didn’t bicker in the Quinjet about what they were going to order in when they watched Star Wars for the forty-eighth time (thanks, Carol). Jess wasn’t really one for openness or a wide variety of friends—her history and power set had never really allowed for it, and her attitude hadn’t always helped—but she couldn’t help but miss the closeness of it all sometimes. Other times, she was reminded of how near murder she’d been sometimes when they were all crawling into each other’s space, but now, she even missed that part of it.
She was thinking about the people she’d met over the years when, as luck would have it, she caught sight of someone very familiar, but who very much didn’t belong here. She hadn’t met her in an Avenging capacity, but it seemed serendipitous that she’d just appear right as Jess was thinking about people she’d met and missed. In fact, maybe too serendipitous. She was pretty sure there weren’t any illusionists around, nor had she been thinking about Gwen specifically enough that any illusionists would have fabricated her, but. She had to be sure.
Approaching her, Jess surveyed her. It—it really did seem like her. Jess wasn’t one to get excited—at least, not as easily as, say, Anya—but there was definitely something warm bubbling up inside her at the possibility. “Gwen?” she called out, looking for—hoping for—some flash of warmth or recognition in the other girl’s eyes. Something to say this was her Gwen. Even the why she was here could come second to that, if just for a moment. Even if it meant more multiversal nonsense. That was all in the back of her mind——spy training meant keeping a finger on all buttons at all times——but right now, her primary focus was all on Gwen, and whether she was the right one.

k looks like what if dark spider gwen finally has her trn on the wiki so welcome to the party gwen-1074!
so i'll take the opportunity to (update a ton of tags... and) ramble a bit.
gwen 1074 is the d-list dumb version of spider-gwen. i think this au is harmless, and therefore fun enough to dip into occasionally, but it's dumb. it's edgy for the sake of edge. it's a poor characterization of gwen and harry. its continuity is awful. it relies entirely on the role-swap gimmick people accuse gwen65 of being dependent on. it's still all about peter. that maxipad costume is hideous.
from a novelty perspective i'm fond of this au because 1074 feels like the version of spider-gwen we were spared a decade ago. just. oh my god. how is it that ten years ago, the first try at spider-gwen was smart enough to give her a unique world, and a backstory that said "hey. what if gwen got to be a hero WITHOUT having to be nearly murdered on that bridge and WITHOUT having to be peter's girlfriend in the first place. what if she had her own costume with its own original design instead of peter's, and her backstory was free of any gender-based trauma, her origin had nothing to do with The Big Fall, and her motivations didn't revolve around her boyfriend, and the world and her supporting cast saw her as the important one instead of him."
the first try. and they knocked it so far out of the park that a decade later people still don't understand how good this backstory is. that creative team was on another level.
... though. i guess the pitfall is because we didn't get to see spider-gwen grow into having that world and leaving being the girlfriend behind, nobody understood how important it was. it's like jumping from mad love harley quinn to post-rebirth harley quinn with no in-between. like, clearly something happened to change that character's role in the story but no one has any idea what it is or why it had to happen so we keep backsliding into girlfriendification.
like. it's wild how it feels like spider-gwen's characterization has regressed instead of progressing. a decade later, we're trying to put her back in stories all about her death trauma, and about avenging or defending her boyfriend (spiderverse gwen 🤝what if dark gwen 🤝earth 8 gwen = being written by men who should never be allowed near her again). gwen65a, at least in the latour/mcguire runs, is still ahead of the zeitgeist.
anyway read what if? dark! it's bad but it's a quick read, it doesn't hurt anything, and you can take a good long look at the bullet we dodged.

k i already did a general love interest tierlist. now to get pragmatic... how viable are they?
and by that i mean: spider-gwen isn't just a story, she's a brand. this character and her narrative must be adaptable into new continuities. when she is, what parts of her story can she take with her? who in comics-gwen's supporting cast can survive being readapted into a new continuity? and which characters that aren't in gwen-65a's supporting cast could smoothly transition into joining it?
this includes love interests, because one of the biggest features of spider-gwen is, unfortunately, shipping. she'll never be asexual for that reason. people want to ship her, and she'll make more money for marvel if she has a romantic arc. thus, figuring out her love interest options is an important component of her character's future.
and the love interests who can survive a jump into another medium or continuity are the ones that will have staying power, because more people are interested in games, animation and movies than in comics. those will be the ones people remember and expect, and synergy will send comics versions of them gwen-65a's way soon enough... which will lead to stories with them that will fuel future adaptations. it's more pragmatic to anticipate that cycle, send her a love interest that can help her narrative instead of harming it (cough spiderverse cough) and make the feedback loop one that will positively affect gwen-65a.
Tumblr media
(like with the other tierlist, this is for characters from the comics and i'll update as new options are introduced. yes, i'll get to black tarantula later.)
to note the exclusions:
no mateo, benji or kosei because this list is for characters gwen could feasibly have a relationship with, not one interaction with a little vibe to it with a one-off minor character who will never reappear.
no murderdock, superior silk, agent 77 or jackal because there's no way these grown adult villains would ever get straight-up shipped with gwen, who'd most likely be aged down to a teenager in most future adaptations. (and because the former three will most reliably appear as their 616 counterparts.)
no peter-65 because logistically, if spider-gwen's readapted into another continuity, she'll probably share it with a spider-peter. peter 65 will never be readapted because he can only exist in earth 65's context, and versions of peter 65 always die.
to note the inclusion:
darius leclerc has never interacted with spider-gwen, thus he's not on the spider-gwen ship tierlist. but he's been shipped with gwen-616, which creates a... special circumstance.
now, into the categories:
DON'T DO IT: the ships that Shouldn't happen, but might because heteropatriarchy is apparently too hard to not adapt too.
peter parker. spider-peter, not peter-65. the whole point of spider-gwen is that she doesn't have to be with him anymore. getting them together defeats this purpose. can they flirt a little? i guess. but do Not let them end up together. the ship is dead. stop digging it up.
miles morales......... is the spiderverse already doing it? yes. should they? absolutely fucking not. the whole. point. of spider-gwen. is that she doesn't. have. to. be. with. him. anymore. the ship must die. kill it.
... they won't do it: don't even bother getting your hopes up. these characters are locked in as A More Important Hero's Endgame.
sue storm. an evil fantastic four will never be readapted from 65. and sue will never be shipped with anyone but reed richards (or namor, for 0.5 seconds). to be fair she and gwen65 have no chemistry anyway; she's here as a courtesy to hammer this point home.
mj watson. she's peter parker's forever girl. anytime spider-gwen appears in another continuity with mj, mj will inevitably end up with peter, as long as he's alive and especially if he's spider-peter. they'll never korrasami it. they'll never reverse-korrasami it. gwen and mj, no matter how canon they get in the comics, cannot happen anywhere but earth 65. it's unadaptable. accept this into your heart and move on.
dragged-back-to-616 danger zone: the ships that in execution would likely only lead to gwen-65 getting synergized back into 616. ship with her as a last resort to stop petergwen or gwiles, but skip if possible.
ami han. it'll Never Happen, but she has the superpowers to make her less forgettable than the one-offs. regardless, she's from 616! it isn't worth it! skip!
kaine. he's not as bad as peter, but landing gwen with his clone still isn't a good look. and since earth-65 will never have peter clones... you know where synergy would send her. too risky. let's just not do it again.
anya corazon. she doesn't have a 65 counterpart, so inevitably her adaptation would be based on 616 anya. meaning synergy would send gwen there or anya to 65, which is a disservice to either of them.
cindy moon. yes, she has a 65 counterpart, but logistically we'll never get a cindy-65 adaptation, so some version of cindy-616 would be most likely. you know where that would take gwen.
more famous 616 variant confusion: earth-65 characters whose personas could be adapted into new continuities... but who will always be overshadowed by their 616 counterpart, which makes them difficult to adapt in the first place. juicy, but realistically nonviable.
johnny storm. johnny's himbo personality and the hint of a vibe between him and gwen could in theory be adapted... and because the evil fantastic four will never be readapted, it could actually end well. but all that'll lead to is gwen-65 getting shipped with johnny 616. and besides, the fantastic four could only have a limited role in a spider-story. this would be a one-off flirtation at best.
kitty pryde. she's a hybrid of kitty pryde and x-23. this would only confuse a new audience. plus, an x-man randomly showing up in a spider-man story is slim to none (and if she does, it'd be a riff on ultimate peter/kitty). it won't happen.
felicia hardy. she's a spider-man supporting character whose 65 counterpart serves basically the same role, meaning there wouldn't be continuity confusion and she'd reliably show up as a supporting role in a spider-story. but everyone knows felicia 616 better, so there's a big danger of another 616 situation, so that tips her down a category. (... also, if silk is in the continuity, silkcat supremacy)
viable if executed right: the characters that won't suck gwen into a synergy vortex, and could have great potential, but may need some reconfiguring to bring it home. these candidates could be adapted... as long as certain conditions are met.
betty brant. 616 betty is more prominent than 65 betty, but 616 betty's decades-long marriage to ned means they'll never synergize her and spider-gwen into a relationship, therefore no 616 vortex. and yes, she's one of peter's love interests, but she's the one we all know he won't end up with, who quickly becomes his friend instead (and people are nowhere near as passionate over nedbetty as they are petermj). bettygwen could work if gwen takes ned's place as peter's friend who she ends up with, so that tips her up a category. if.
hobie brown. another spider-man supporting role, who'd fit easily into a spider-story as a recurring presence. he even has a great dynamic with gwen. the only question is... which hobie. he'll never be the prowler again, so prowler hobie is out of the question. he can only be spider-punk in specific situations, so realistically spider-punk can't be adapted in anything but a one-off spiderverse teamup (if he is? do it! they'll never put gwen in 138 for good. synergy doesn't pose a threat to her). the only way hobie can reliably show up is as the hornet. so what's hornet hobie's vibe with gwen? we have no idea. if he keeps spider-punk's personality and visual aesthetic, we might have cracked a way to keep hobie adaptable and give him a reason to reliably keep showing up in spider-stories (... and it creates a synergy backdoor for gwen65 to date the punk version of hobie, spider-punk. which again, is kind of ideal). but it's still a big if. and it's never been done before.
viable... to a point: the love interest that'll work... until.
harry osborn. harry goes to high school with gwen in 616 and 65, has dated or been shipteased with her in multiple continuities, and he isn't a spider-man's love interest (sorry parksborns. it is what it is.) in theory, he's available, present in gwen's life, and shipping them could lead to 65 gwarry because 616 harry is permadead. but. anytime peter shows up, harry will get sucked into his orbit, just like mj. harry will become peter's best friend, (may go to midtown instead of standard, if a separate-schools scenario exists like in marvel action) and will likely go goblin and implode. if gwen and harry are a couple, it'll never end well. it might even be abusive or toxic. (i hate it, but it feels very plausible that in continuities where spider-peter is present, if gwen's prom date attack origin is kept, harry might end up being the incel peter stand-in.) it's worth exploring, but we cannot hope he'll be an endgame love interest.
ready to go: they have no preexisting romance with a hero, no bad implications attached to a romance with gwen, are immune to the 616 synergy vortex, are easy to add to a new continuity and there's an opportunity to enhance this character's memorability through this romance. these are the romantic interests who should be adapted.
darius leclerc. there's no darius on 65 (yet). but since nobody remembers darius 616, and darius 616 was a character who existed in relation to gwen instead of peter, he's a safe ship that won't pull her away from home. and he has great potential, since barely anything's been done with him. being gwen's love interest could bring him back into the fandom consciousness after being completely forgotten. make him a hero, make him a villain, make him a civilian boyfriend; the sky's the limit. he and gwen616 are doomed. maybe he and gwen65 can go the distance. (... bffr you know people are gonna call him diet miles if he dates spider-gwen. so work with it; use darius to hit the spiderverse narrative beats while leaving miles out of it: he's the sweet high school boyfriend, who is black, whose dad she's complicit in hurting, which spurs gwen to reconsider her politics. or if harrygwen doesn't happen, darius could also sub in as the nice rich straight bf she's doomed to never end up with.)
glory grant. the dark horse tbh. yes, she's technically part of peter's circle, but nobody remembers 616 glory is mj's friend, or a brief peter love interest. the most prominent glory grant in canon is glory 65, meaning 1) no 616 vortex, and 2) her relationship with gwen is the thing people know most about her, and it's difficult to displace. like with darius, glory can sub in for a prominent member of gwen's supporting cast who'll inevitably be absorbed by peter in another continuity: the belligerent bandmate bestie who she has romantic tension with (she's already taken mj's role in marvel action). and if that ball keeps rolling, if the gwenjay vibe is absorbed too, and especially if gwen-65's crush on glory is resurrected... glory grant could end up being the dark horse candidate for gwen's universal love interest.
the symbiote. you know what's up with this blob and its host. idk if future spider-gwens will have symbiotes, but if they do... i mean. come on. that slime is her true love. gwen isn't romantically driven, doesn't want a family, and much of her arc revolves around escaping shitty relationships. ending up on her own is more fitting than ending up with most people.
anyway the criteria with which we judge who's a viable love interests are if they're...
1: less popular than gwen. which means she'll never be reduced to Their Girlfriend and the power in the relationship remains in her hands and the story focus remains on her. especially important if you're shipping her with a man, because people will find some excuse to make that man more important than her. make that as difficult as possible for them.
2: not a more important hero's endgame love interest. because gwen will never be allowed to swoop in and snatch a more iconic hero's flagship romance, and she deserves one of her own.
(2.5: not locked into an arc with that more important hero that'll make them fundamentally incapable of serving as an endgame love interest. because peter will most likely be present in any future continuity spider-gwen's in. thus, though harry may not be peter's love interest, he's pretty much doomed to turn into a villain and self-destruct in a conflict that centers those two men. the ship can sail, but it's doomed to sink in a way that'll most likely reduce gwen to a footnote. unlike gwenjay, we can get on this ship, but if we do, we have to plan for another that can complete the voyage.)
3: not playing second fiddle to their 616 counterpart. if gwen dates a character based on a more well-known variant from 616, she's gonna get dragged back there. pick someone obscure enough that a non-616 counterpart could be the definitive version of the character... which in turn could boost that character's profile through a relationship with gwen.
4: a member of the spider-man supporting cast. they reliably show up in spider-man stories and have a recurring presence in them, meaning it would make sense for them to show up in the story and keep showing up, which is necessary because building up a strong romantic plotline takes time.
... i find it interesting that the most viable potential love interests so far are all black. glory, hobie, and if darius ever comes back he's basically set. sitting in a tree is evil incarnate, but it did stumble on one thing about gwen's future romantic prospects that seems to be coming true.

i think its interesting that there are two canonical events where gwen65's mind is fragmented to the point of creating Entirely New People. like that provides alot of psychoanalysis whatever but again like you couldve done that in any other fucking way its such a convoluted and out of place plotline Put Down The Multiverse
