Norn canonically express a high body heat and dress lightly. I am a student biologist who mains a norn.
In the book The Ghosts of Ascalon, an asura named Kranxx mentions that Norn generate a lot of body heat at the slightest exertion. While this is just another thing that differentiates norn from humans, it actually makes sense as a species! Let's talk about it!
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the term for the state in which an organism's body needs to function. Your body self-regulates to keep proper temperature, blood sugar and pressure, hormone production, and more. This is an equilibrium that you and other organisms need to live. Right now, we're going to focus on the former.
Mammals and birds are all warm-blooded, meaning they produce their own body heat. With the exception of Sylvari, Hylek, Quaggan, and Krait, it seems that most sapient races in Tyria are warm-blooded species. Obviously, this includes norn.
The purpose of body heat is for the body to regulate it's internal temperature. We give off body heat because all of the systems in our body give off more heat than our body needs to self-regulate, so it gives it off. Thermodynamics says that warm temperatures will seek out colder areas until they both reach an equilibrium. This is why that even without fur, we can be outside when it's colder when a lizard would fall asleep.
What the fuck does this have to do with GW2?
Now, lets talk about Norn. They live in snowy mountains comfortably when other races will complain about the cold. (Charr might be an exception because of their fur, but I couldn't find anything that gives a hint one way or the other.) The wiki states it well- "Despite the cold weather of the Shiverpeaks, the norn are often only lightly clad, exposing skin which is frequently covered in elaborated tattoos in Scandinavian/Norse style motifs."
Why would they prefer less clothing? Because they'd overheat!
We wear heavy clothes in winter because our body heat is not enough on it's own, and we must use something to insulate it so it stays in our body. Norn give off more body heat because they live in the mountains, meaning they're able to give off enough to keep themselves at a comfortable temperature. The body heat they give off goes into the cold air, and they stay at a temperature okay for homeostasis. If they covered up any more, that heat would be insulated and kept in their bodies, causing them to overheat.
This also means that norn would also be susceptible to high temperatures, like that in Elona. I mean, the only norn I remember seeing there in-game were Braham, Eir's Ghost, and my norn commander.
In conclusion, Norn giving off high body heat and dressing lightly makes sense for their species from a biological sense.
I have tons of other things I want to yap about norn so look forward to that. You have no choice.

GW2 people - Pitch me YOUR idea for an Expansion!
What's the theme, where are we going, what lore threads are we picking up on, what's the story premise, what mechanics do you think it could have.
I love spitballing ideas when I'm talking with friends so I'm posing the question To Everyone because I know everyone has some pet concepts floating around. As self-indulgent as you'd like, as unrealistic as you like, just throw ideas around, I wanna hear them!
The One I think I have the most rounded ideas for would be an Underwater Expansion. Picking up on the threat of whatever is terrorising the deep oceans, having some exploration of the Largos and bringing back in the Quaggan and the Krait maybe!
I love the sort of depths we get in maps like Frostgorge sound, and underwater combat has badly needed a rework and a tune up - there's loads of skills which straight up don't work and break entire builds underwater, and this would be a perfect excuse to try bring it up to speed. Maybe even make the underwater weapon sets function on land, to satisfy those who're after more weapons. You could make the maps a mix of true underwater and perhaps giant air bubble caves so you still had some land exploration even in maps otherwise set deep under the ocean. A map meta split with land phases and water phases. Additionally as personal bias wish, I'd love map event/meta design more like HoT. A map-wide Story with a few chains with specifically Build into the actual true Meta. I also simply love the idea of having a bunch of enemy designs based of the ocean and the abyss, there's so much incredible inspiration and interesting marine life. and biomes too! Give me a hydrothermal vent section in one of the maps, hell underwater 'water' in the form of brine pool 'quicksand'.
The Turtle might get some more use out of it's underwater, and skimmer would absolutely get spotlight as a skyscale isn't going to get you too far here - hell maybe even some speedy new underwater mount could be a fun addition to the roster.
I can see a plot being around trying to work with the Largos, The 'Terror of the Deep' being a danger and learning from them about how to survive the hostile environment and also convince them work with you to Hunt the 'Terror'. Maybe you come to the area of the ocean with the Quaggans and it's convincing the Largos to take them seriously as allies against whatever you're fighting? A quaggan companion character would be really fun, and you could easily bring back Sayeh al' Rajihd from the personal story given Largos involvement. I think not only would it be something very different in terms of the maps, which granted quite a few people might not like (thalassophobia reasons, or general Dislike of Water Gameplay reasons), but I think a rework of the underwater mechanics would benefit a bunch of places and it's something that really doesn't get touched outside of base game and maybe like, the Leviathans in EoD. There's so much neat creature design inspiriation swimming around out there, and I know so many people love the largos and even if not playable getting to see more of them could be neat! Also - it'd finally make all those legendary full people happy. A Legendary Aquabreather :P.
And a new suite of legendary underwater weapons since the G1 set. (and not themed pretty please make them all Unique.)
#gw2#guild wars 2#apollo talks#I would also adore a fully underground give me three-four tangled depthslike cave maps for an asura expansion where they go back undergroun#to explore and something's trying to capitalise on the hole left by Primordus#and something with the Norn heading back up into the northern shiverpeaks again and similarly dealing with#whatever is trying to fill the jormag power vaccum#and how the spirits are doing#there's so much solid stuff to play with

(REPOST BECAUSE I MOVED ACCOUNTS)

THE BIOLOGY OF TYRIA - PART I
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the term for the state in which an organism’s body needs to function. Your body self-regulates to keep proper temperature, blood sugar and pressure, hormone production, and more. This is an equilibrium that you and other organisms need to live. Right now, we’re going to focus on the former.
Mammals and birds are all warm-blooded, meaning they produce their own body heat. With the exception of Sylvari, Hylek, Quaggan, and Krait, it seems that most sapient races in Tyria are warm-blooded species. Obviously, this includes norn.

The purpose of body heat is for the body to regulate it’s internal temperature. We give off body heat because all of the systems in our body give off more heat than our body needs to self-regulate, so it gives it off. Thermodynamics says that warm temperatures will seek out colder areas until they both reach an equilibrium. This is why that even without fur, we can be outside when it’s colder when a lizard would fall asleep.
Now, lets talk about Norn. They live in snowy mountains comfortably when other races will complain about the cold. (Charr might be an exception because of their fur, but I couldn’t find anything that gives a hint one way or the other.) because i like polls
now pick your favorite from my favorite types of enemies in gw2. i think their designs are really cool, they have fun attacks, they have good combat dialog, etc.
(not every one of them is ALWAYS an enemy, but all of them have at least some sort of enemy you can fight in game. ie there are good choyas, but theres also choya u can murder)
#gw2#im bored and like to press buttons in polls#i think my personal fav is forged#i love their designs so much i want to eat them

the urge to make like. non-playable race ocs for gw2 is so so compelling. i ESPECIALLY want to make a krait those guys are so weird and fun to me
i'd also like making a grawl... maybe a centaur! :] the other races in tyria are so cool it makes me sad how they're treated like they're "lesser" all because they're sorta. Hostile Mob Guys but in-world the way they're treated is sad too
#centaurs just want humans to piss off their land#grawl are trying to do their worshipping thing#the krait i. dont think i can excuse those guys just do stuff /lh#BUT THE NON-PLAYABLE RACES ARE SO COOL AUGGGHHH#rambling

Ok ok since you said you want to talk gw1 - what has been your favorite part of it? Any unexpected things you recognized from gw2?
Oh excellent, hahaha. I have so many thoughts, long post incoming!
My favorite part has actually been the combat, which surprised me a lot because I usually prefer the faster, looser style you'd find in GW2. I think it's a huge testament to GW1's quality that I enjoy the tactical, slower combat there just as much as something that's more classically in my wheelhouse. More than that though, I like the enemy design. I was shocked at how SMART the enemies are. They resurrect each other, they target your healers, they heal themselves, etc. Different groups have different tactics and require different strategies, and you start to learn those as you go through the game. I can DPS through a krait monk's healing, for instance, but a Stone Summit dolyak rider healer will stall me forever. It's tactical and consistently challenging enough that I have fun just running around the world killing stuff, and because they stay dead it's a lot more satisfying to do that.
Seriously, the enemy design is sharp enough that I had down to a science exactly how many Afflicted it took to murder my whole party of henchmen down in the Kaineng sewers. 4 or less was an easy win for us. 5 made me pay attention. 6 was a hard fight, and any more than that would kill us, guaranteed. Oh hey, guess how many Afflicted tend to be in the patrolling groups down there? 5-6.
Couple of things I was surprised to see: First, the humor is still there. There's less of it, but from the way people talk about the first game, especially Prophecies, I was expecting a serious almost grim-dark adventure. Instead, while there are quests about losing your homeland and the trauma of that, there is also a quest where I have to find treats for a pet devourer named Joe so that it stops eating the Vanguard soldiers' rations. There's the running joke where every female henchman in Cantha has a crush on Mhenlo and Cynn is about to set them on fire for it. I think the game actually does a good job balancing humor and tragedy to make the tragedy hurt more. And like, humor is a way people process trauma, so it makes sense for Ascalonians to have a dark sense of humor.
Other surprising thing: the amount of developed female characters, especially ones that can kick your ass. Even back then ANet wasn't afraid of making women a key part of the adventure, which is refreshing compared to other MMOs of the time and even other MMOs now. 3/5 of the core henchmen you'll see on the box are female. Beyond that, there are important female characters throughout all three campaigns, like Salma, Evennia, Danika, Kormir, Gwen, and many more. And there are female villains too - I just met Varesh Ossa, for instance, and I know Minister Reiko is in there somewhere. I have some grievances, but for an older game it's pretty impressive, and it's clear the developers aren't afraid to just let women be badasses. While I wouldn't say I'm as connected to these characters yet, there are definitely some that I fell in love with. Like Danika - she's the only Kurzick with any brain cells and I love her.
Other random things I discovered: mursaat are awful bastards. Like, I knew they were terrible lorewise, but having to actually fight the floaty buggers that shoot deadly magic at you and hide behind their bulky golems makes them so much more annoying. Titans are horrifying enemies (why do the ash ones BLEED???) that I can't believe aren't talked about more, since apparently we've just got a sealed-up apocalypse hanging out down in the Fire Islands. There's another lich besides Joko!? How does that happen!? Do you just become a lich if you're a powerful necromancer whose entire nation gets destroyed?
Also the Jade Sea is like ... blue in this game. I think I like it better. You can burn down Old Kaineng though, that place is terrible.
Alright, I'll stop rambling now. Thank you for the ask!

6, 16, 18 for Commander ask game
(also I can't see the ask button the GW2 sideblog)
(I uh, need to figure out why it's not, I've never run a sideblog before and I'm still kinda a Tumblr newb >>;; )
6. Has your commander been in any non-platonic relationship(s)? If so, with who, and how has that relationship shaped them as a person?
Danielle has been in two non-platonic relationships! The first was with Demmi Beetlestone, the two having grown close in the Order of Whispers despite being quite different in personalities and initially not getting along. Demmi was the one who softened many of Danielle's rough edges and helped her to open up more, and they both came to admit their feelings not long before that fateful mission to Caudecus's manor. Demmi was both the first one Danielle came to love and also the first experience of profound heartbreaking loss.
Her second relationship ended up being with Livia. Initially they began as trading sarcastic barbs and hunting the last Mursaat as well as whatever remnants of the White Mantle still existed. Livia's more flirtatious nature often ended up with Danielle getting flustered and slowly recovering from the void Demmi's loss left in her heart. They initially grew into a more casual friends with benefits kind of relationship (I think is the term) that, after Danielle fell at Balthazar's sword, the two came to realize their feelings and shifted into a proper relationship. Her relationship with Livia has taught her that it was ok to move on after mourning Demmi and that doing so wasn't a betrayal to her first love's memory. (And let's just say in how my friend and I write, Livia definitely teaches Danielle some more unconventional things).
16. Outside of their own race and culture, which other race and/or culture is your commander most interested in? Why?
I feel like the easiest response here is a bit of a cheap one, especially since the Norn are the race she ended up raised by as a child due to krait attacking her home village. She's been so ingrained into Norn culture that she reveres the Spirits of the Wild more than the human gods by this point.
So for a different race/culture, I would have to go with the lowland kodan. The way they seek balance with and revere nature has drawn her interest as she's met and befriended them, and being among them has been peaceful and relaxing in a way she hasn't felt in a very long time. It's one of the cases that, when she finishes with her duties as the Wayfinder/Commander, she'd like to spend more time among them to learn from them and just avoid the constant fight that feels as if it's been her life for years.
18. Is there anyone your commander idolizes? If so, what is the root of this idolization? Have they ever met their idol, and did the meeting change their perception of said idol?
Ooooh now this is a tricky one to think on for answering. As a rescued orphan raised among the norn, it was Eir who became her idol as she watched and learned of her during her time recovering and healing. Eir became her idol because she balanced both strength with gentleness, protecting others and being a fierce hunter yet kind enough to save and help a traumatized child. So in this instance, her idol was someone she grew up over the years learning the ways of the ranger from.
For an idol she hadn't grown up knowing... Danielle came to idolize Glint. The idea of a Champion of Kralkatorrik defying her fate and her circumstances to rise above them and fight to protect the world? That story was indeed inspiring to her. The little bit she met of Glint primarily reinforced her perceptions of the dragon, as she was revealed to have known her fate yet still persisted despite it, despite what fear there had to be.

i havent been keeping particularly good notes abt how my characters are reacting to plot beats (well ive Tried i definitely kept up revyls journal during its ps but ive fallen off aksjd) because imma be honest i havent been invested in the story till scarlet got introduced but i wanna keep doing it and posting it on here
#talking tag#gw2#this current tension with revyl coming into contact with the court again is Inchresting though....#since one of the npcs you report to is priory maybe taz and revyl are the ones mainly in charge of helping marjory with the antitoxin#and while the two of em are out fighting krait taz finds out....rotating them#revyl struck with the fear of god that it might be taken back into the court because it was too valuable an asset to lose#and that its relationship with co commander irene is not only ruined forever#that irene will just!! attack it!!! ah!!!!!!#ok this goes in the journal tag now with all this rambling alsjd#journal: gw2
