Complex Inquest Character Asks

wanted to self indulgently make an oc ask meme that might help ppl develop their inquest more in depth :-) ik there's at least one other inquest ask post out there but i wanted one with particular sorts of probing questions! feel free to reblog obvs

Have they been an Inquest loyalist since the start, or did they defect from another faction? Is there a risk they'll defect away from the Inquest in the future? (If already defected: If it were possible, would they go back?)

What is their rank, and how did they attain it? Did they WANT that rank? Do they wear it well?

Related to above: Are they SATISFIED with their rank, or do they want to keep climbing the ladder? Do they feel they deserve better than they've been given?

How well do they perform their job? Do other Inquest respect them, or are they on the chopping block?

How is their relationship with the concept of violence? Do they view it as a necessary evil, avoid inflicting it where possible, or even enjoy it?

Do they have a guilty conscience? How do they cope with or personally reconcile the continuous stress and horror?

"Fun" one: What's their uniform like? Is it a generic-issued uniform, or custom tailored? Are there any features built into it that assist with their job?

Do they believe this-- is there a psuedo-religious/philosophical element to their Inquest loyalty? How do they feel towards other races?

Were they involved with any of the canon GW2 events that involved the Inquest-- Thaumanova, Crucible of Eternity, Sorrow's Embrace, Rata Primus, etc? (Optional: How'd they escape when the Commander rolled in?)

Since Maara is my main and best known character, I am going to answer these for her.

11. Are there weapons they can't use to save their life?

Maara is frankly kind of a terrible shot and favors close quarters when possible. However, being a former Legion soldier she has been trained in most common types of weapons one could expect to come across and can use them with at least passable proficiency.

18. Can they handle themselves in a fight without using weapons?

Absolutely. Maara is fairly good at hand to hand combat, which is once again primarily owed to her Legion training. On top of that, when you're as big as she is, just smacking someone can be deadly.

4. How was their awakening? Did something particular happen? What's their first memory?

his awakening was largely uneventful? he awoke in winter, at the tail end of the year of the secondborn awakening, and what the firstborn were very surprised by were his levels of magical power? other than that, uneventful. there is, however, a funny little story regarding riannoc.

see, el had awoken after riannoc had already died, so he awoke with the knowledge of death, but it was never immediate and raw until much later. so when he first met trahearne, maybe a week into being on tyria, he introduced himself as trahearne because he thought it was funny + he was probing for information on riannoc. trahearne wasn't very happy obviously and was quite angry for a bit before el realized he chose the wrong approach.

7. What was their first experience with other races? How did it impact them?

as a secondborn, his first experiences with other races was... traumatic? he was never captured by the asura, who would've experimented on him, and that is bc the firstborn monitored him and other magically gifted sylvari outside the grove. but he learned through osmosis the horrors his siblings had gone through - canach and malomedies being big such examples - and it scarred his ability to trust non-sylvari (and even non-dreamers, after cadeyrn founded the nightmare court) in a big way for a very long time.

10. What are their hobbies and pastimes? Do they have any natural talent or particularly strong interest? Was it something they knew from the Dream or did they develop it once awakened?

aside from a genuine love for learning and knowledge, el is also keenly interested in a pursuit of beauty? physical beauty, i should say. he spends a lot of time growing his own clothes, pruning his foliage (in human au, this includes shaving and maintaining of body and facial hair too) and just making sure he looks good at all times. he also enjoys reading, but he reads only select few genres which is: high fantasy and scientific literature! and like. little else lmao

16. Where were they when the call of Mordremoth struck? Did they hear and follow it, or did they resist it?

he was on the board of the airship vengeance rising! i wrote about this here, but tl;dr is that he did hear it but resisted - if mordremoth died any later than when he did, he would've become mordrem. but he is not! he's just mentally scarred from it and had to recover parts of his own mind that felt like an empty space afterwards :')

17. If they were to turn into Mordrem, what would they look like? Would they manage to turn back?

that is something i don't think about much tbh, but he would have clawed hands and pointy teeth! floor length hair, too! i don't think much about this possibility though, bc it's the "bad ending."

12. How does your commander feel about Braham?

Braham is and always will be Thorne's younger brother. They are the found family ever and writing frozen out was SAD. But either way Thorne cares very deeply for Braham. After really apologizing and regaining trust, Braham is one of the very few people who knows what happened when Joko took Thorne. They get especially close in IBS.

15. How has your commander changed overtime?

Thorne started out as a very naive, very religious, and very righteous person. He accepted the role of Pact Commander mostly because for the entire Orr campaign he was dissociating from his grief for Tybalt, who was a father figure to him. Mind you, Thorne was sixteen when he became the Commander. Trahearne didn't know this.

After Zhaitan, Thorne feels invincible and he develops a God Complex. This is damaged slightly when Eir and Trahearne die, but it only truly goes away when Balthazar kills him. From this point on he is past the event horizon, and becomes extremely depressed. Joko makes it 1000% worse both with his monologue and the whole. Imprisoning and torturing bit. This permanently alters him to basically what he is now.

Now, he's cold, violent, and unpredictable. Isgarren wants to kill him for the sake of Tyria, fearing that between Thorne's power and his fragile mental state, he will snap and become a serious threat. Garráncroí freaks out about this, but Thorne actually agrees. He was even previously stopped from climbing over a railing in the Wizard's Tower more than once. He snaps out of it a little post-eparch and he finally tries to repair his communicator to tell everyone he made Zojja lie about his death.

18. How does your commander handle stress?

Depends on what kind of stress. Stress from pressure usually makes him violent or isolate himself. However, anxiety stress makes him seek out comfort and also brings his half-leopard side out a lot more. (While his condition is a metaphor for my disabilities, it's also a metaphor for my therian identity)

6: What companion are you platonically close with? She ended up having the closest platonic friendship with Emmrich. Those crazy crypt kids! They sit around and talk for hours about Fade, Spirits, and necromancer techniques. She is more than a bit happy she is basically getting private personal lectures with Emmrich. If only I could get Benedicta, Emmrich, Dorian, and Nerys Lavellan (who is also a necromancer) in the same room to talk spooky kid shit. Which does tie in to the next question.

9: Does your Rook get along with their chosen Faction? Benedicta is a Mourn Watcher and she loved her job before all this. She might have had a few academic rivals. Like, "how dare someone checked out Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? first edition before me?!" But she loved the work, the Spirits to talk to, helping people with their grief, and the Mourn Watchers who raised her. I headcanon that Myrna was a big sister to her when she was growing up. Vorgoth was so cool to teenage Benedicta. I have been thinking a lot about if she will go back to that work.

Hm. Easy mode here is Karlach bc we all know how I feel about her. :D

I'll pick GW2. I haven't been as active in it lately as I was last year because BG3 fandom has been taking up so much more of my time, but I still really really love it and it's easily the best MMO I've ever played. (Not that I have tremendous MMO experience, but still.)

My favorite thing about it is the community, which is SO strongly geared towards mutual support. I don't really how this compares to the "average" MMO, but the way events are structured (particularly map meta events), everyone is encouraged to come together and work on things as a group and support each other in accomplishing goals.

And the game's culture reflects this! Toss a line in any map chat - "Hey, trying to get the Balthazar's Rest HP, can anyone come and help me out?" and odds are like 95% that some rando will come swooping in to help within a few minutes. Guilds (like one I belong to) form up with the express purpose of running events and helping/guiding/teaching other players.

As someone who REALLY thrives on being able to help other people with things, this is an environment that I find really enjoyable to hang around in and it's one of the big draws that keeps me coming back.

(As a counterpoint, though, I also enjoy that you're not really forced to interact more than you want to with other players. Even in group events, it can be a very impersonal thing where you just help each other out and go on your merry way, and none of the story stuff requires you to have anyone else with you in order to complete it.)

GW2 is great. :D I wish I had many more hours in the day or perhaps several more sets of hands, so that I could spend all my time in BG3 and GW2 at the same time. XD

I actually wanted to answer all of these with my main 3 plants, so I'll start here :D

4. How was their awakening? Did something particular happen? What's their first memory? 8. Do they fit well into Sylvari society or are they more at home with other races? How do they feel about fellow Sylvari? Do they have any particular sympathy or antipathy for other races?

4. Luelle awoke at night...sort of. She fell from her pod in the late afternoon, but she was not conscious. She finally awoke late into the night, her first memory is looking up at the expansive sky and basking in the full moon's glow.

8. She has a rough past with the Inquest, leading to a rocky relationship with Asura in general, but she is working on it with her partner, Gizzi. Since being artificially separated from the dream, she doesn't feel as connected to other Sylvari as she once did. She misses the feeling sometimes.

4. Bryn awoke fairly typically. They awoke on a crisp Autumn morning when the leaves had already started to fall.

For others, they describe her as imposing and intimidating, and her presence as cold and dreadful. She is not someone you wanna trifle with if you're not with the inner crowd of wealthy (and corrupt) Nobles she has enthralled.
