Raise the Stakes, Part 9
Shorter bit this time! Anyone who watched Impact Slammiversary can predict what happens here.
Previous sections (including the original that spawned this multi=part monster) can be found in the Master List.
Pairing: David Finlay x OFC x Jay White
Word count: 1,362
Content advisory: nothing really, other than cursing. there's always cursing.
You’re determined to have coffee made by the time he wakes up but it feels like you’re bumping into everything and making the maximum noise possible. As soon as you got out of bed and grabbed the first shirt you found, which happens to be his shirt, your legs felt like they were only partially under your control. It’s not just that you’re physically off but that you’re emotionally off as well. You keep peeking back in the bedroom to make sure he’s still there.
When the coffee is ready, you pour two large mugs, pleased that you remember how he takes it, and pad back into the bedroom.
His eyes open just a crack and he gives a languid smile.
“Bringing me coffee and wearing my shirt? Are you trying to kill me?”
You laugh and put his mug down on the night table.
“Put them both down.”
You oblige and he wraps an arm around you, pulling you down on top of him. He plays with the hem of your shirt for a few seconds before speaking.
“Well this has never looked better.”
You can’t resist leaning in for a kiss, which he welcomes, running his fingers through your hair and holding your face close even when you separate.
“So how long are you supposed to be here before you go back to Japan?”
“As long as I want. I didn’t ask for an excursion, David, I quit. Gedo came up with this because he didn’t want to lose me and they need help over here.”
“You seriously quit,” he repeats incredulously. “That must have gone over well.”
“I guess they really liked me after all.”
“You know that’s not who I meant.” He gives you an insouciant look. “How did he take it?”
You push yourself back up to a sitting position because you want him to have a clear view of your face as you tell him. “No idea. I left him a note thanking him for the opportunities he’d given me and telling him that the time had come for me to move on to other things.”
“Damn. Didn’t even say it to his face.” He shakes his head a little. “Doesn’t sound like you’re over him.”
You’re surprised at the total lack of resentment in his voice, like he’s just pointing out something you might not have considered before.
“Fair enough,” you sigh. “I guess some things you just have to walk away from and deal with on your own time because it would just be too drawn-out and fucked up if you tried to do it while you were still in the thick of things. Not every situation gets closure.”
He smiles again, which surprises you and also makes you feel warm through your whole body.
“I like that,” he says softly, squeezing your hip. “Now you can get off me because I need coffee.”
It’s well into the afternoon by the time he heads back to his place and once he’s gone, you have to go for a long walk just to burn off some of the happy energy you’re feeling. By early evening, he calls.
“What are you up to?”
“Nothing. Thinking of ordering pizza.”
“Can I have some?”
“No. You can’t do a cheat meal the night before a big show.”
“Fine. I’ll sit here and eat cauliflower all night or something.”
“Sounds like I should keep an eye on you to make sure you’re not eating anything you shouldn’t.”
So it’s not long at all before you’re over at his place and the two of you are cooking dinner together, which largely consists of you retrieving ingredients, chopping vegetables and herbs, and letting him handle the actual cooking part. It seems like you’re both trying to stretch out this part, trying to have a longer conversation because it’s been a while since you’ve been able to do that, but it’s also very obvious from your body language that you’re itching to get your hands on each other. Eventually, it becomes impossible to hold back.
“You have bruises,” you giggle as the two of you recover your breath in his bed.
“Comes with the job.”
“Those aren’t from another wrestler.”
“Lucky for you people will think they were and won’t know you’re beating me when they aren’t around.”
“No, they’ll think they’re from training and that you’ve been working very hard the last couple of days.”
“Well, I’ve been getting good cardio in.”
You pull him close to you, laughing. You desperately want to find a way to ask if you get to go home with him tonight, after the show. Having spent the last two nights together, it’s not exactly like he should feel obliged to be with you again, especially not if he’s sore or wants to just hang out with the guys. But you love the idea of being able to celebrate with him, and the idea that he might want to share that moment with you.
In the end, you can’t come up with a way to broach the subject without making yourself feel exposed, and the two of you go from affectionately touching each other to being aroused once again, which takes your mind off things rather quickly. Still, you make sure that you at least repeat that you love him, in case he thinks that you were in any doubt.
*
It’s been a long time since you could just be a wrestling fan and be in an audience cheering and booing and laughing. Impact has made sure you have a great seat, right in front, where you can feel like you’re part of everything. You know a lot of people in the audience, they’re mostly friends and family who’ve been invited to serve as a stepping stone between an empty theatre and the return to live audiences. Even the small group, though, makes things feel exciting, so there you are, carrying on like a 12-year-old, losing yourself in the experience.
Of course, you pop especially loud when FinJuice make their surprise (to everyone else) return. Seeing him at a remove like this, where you’re not supposed to know him outside of his in-ring persona, gives you a little thrill. It’s like the fact that you know him is your secret. He does give you a little wink as he passes and you bite your lip reflexively.
The whole show is a lot of fun and builds to a great climax. You’ve been backstage for Kenny Omega matches before but you’ve never had the opportunity to just appreciate what a great worker he is. It’s so easy to get caught up in the story he tells and Callihan, tough bastard that he is, makes a perfect counterpoint. You can feel in the back of your mind that the company has one more surprise coming. They love this sort of thing, especially as a big closer and you can’t blame them. There’s something about the faces in the crowd that makes you think that everyone senses something in the air.
And, as the despicable winners raise their hands and preen in the ring, the room goes dark. There’s a deep silence that engulfs the room for a moment and then the sound of metal scraping on metal, a sound you know all too well. It cuts right through you, down to the bone.
No. It’s not possible.
The music kicks in, every note of it like an electrical shock. You can hear the voices rising from the nearby commentary booth. “Is he here?!?”
You give a silent prayer to whatever deity might be listening. Please don’t let this be happening.
The music continues to swell as Omega and his boys stand in the ring, perplexed and anxious, until finally a figure emerges at the top of the ramp, surveying everything around him with a sort of bemused contempt as he picks his way through the last match’s wreckage and down to the ring. He looks so good it’s like an insult.
Behind you, one of the commentator’s voices cries out “It’s Switchblade Jay White!”
And as soon as you hear that, your knees buckle and everything goes dark.

Raise the Stakes, Part 10
Hope you've enjoyed the pic/ inspiration spam I've ben posting! Here's the next section. YOu can find previous sections on the Master List.
Do I have an ending for this coming up? No. I have about 6 and I haven't decided which direction I'm going to go in. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm not going to be able to "pick" an ending until after they have their match at Resurgence next week. But please feel free to message me and tell me what should happen. In the meantime...
Pairing: David Finlay x OFC x Jay White
Word count: 1,943
Content advisory: nothing really, although I guess there's some behavior that could be interpreted as creepy
You’re dimly aware of someone lifting you and carrying you and by the time you get backstage, you’re more or less fully conscious.
“Are you ok?” one of the production assistants comes running over.
“Yeah, I just haven’t had a lot to eat today,” you mumble. “I’m not hurt or anything.”
“I know it’s hot out there with the lights and everything.”
“Really, it’s ok, I just got a bit dizzy.”
The security guard looming over you, the man who brought you back here, looks a little skeptical.
“What happened?”
“You fainted.”
“No, I mean, what happened with the show? I saw that… Switchblade showed up.” You chuckle a little. “Did the other guys beat him up or are they all together?”
The production assistant smiles. “It was pretty cool. They kind of stared down but before anything happened, Juice and David went running out, so them and Callihan cleared the ring.”
“Nice.” You very much like the sound of that. “The good guys got one back.”
“Yeah, I mean Jay hit David and took him out at the end but it was pretty positive.”
“He what?”
“Yeah, after they’d driven everyone off, Jay jumped back in and did his blade runner thing on David. Looked pretty cool.”
Panic sets in.
“Is David ok?”
“I’m sure he is. Maybe his ego’s a bit bruised.”
“Where is he?”
You and David aren’t “out” as anything, you’re not even sure if you are anything, but you don’t care what anyone makes of it because you need to see him.
“I think he’s with the doctor,” the PA answers confusedly.
You’re immediately on your feet, all of your faculties returned, running for the medic’s office. When you get there, Juice tries to grab your arm but you dodge him and go skidding into the room where David is seated on the examination table. He looks at you like he’s surprised to see you.
“Are you alright?” he asks.
“Fine. Are you? I sort of fainted and… I heard you got hurt.”
He gives you a wink. “Nothing I haven’t felt before. This is just a precaution because I wasn’t expecting the…” He stares at you hard before addressing himself to the doctor. “Could you give us a minute?’
“No problem,” she sighs. “You look fine.”
David thrusts his chin out at Juice to tell him that he should back off too. His partner looks a little unsure but steps back a few paces.
Once you’re alone, David raises his arm, inviting you to come closer. When you’re within reach, he pulls you against him.
“I didn’t know,” you croak. “I had no idea about any of this, you have to believe me, I wouldn’t-”
“Hey,” he says softly, touching your cheek, “if you say you didn’t know then I believe you.”
“This is my fault, though. I made it worse.”
“Stop that. Jay’s an asshole. He always has to be angry about something. I beat him in Japan and you ditched him to come here.”
“For you,” you remind him.
He gives you a sweet kiss and runs his finger along the shell of your ear. “What do you mean, you fainted?”
“I just got dizzy. I haven’t really eaten.”
“Well let’s fix that. I’ll just finish up with the doc and we can go get something to eat.”
“You mean it?” It’s such a relief that he still wants to spend time with you that you feel like you’re going to pass out again.
“Yeah I mean it.” He grins and calls out for the doctor to come back in. She does a quick final check and determines that he can go.
He slips off the table and, as you go to leave, slips his arm around you. You respond in kind and it feels like your body is glowing.
Until you get into the hallway. There he is, talking to some of the guys, laughing away, the arrogance just rolling off him. He glances at the two of you with a sinister expression, his eyes locking onto yours until you turn your head away.
“You should kick his ass right here,” you growl.
David looks at you and shakes his head. “Not worth the trouble.” He gives you a squeeze before continuing, “Now what do you feel like eating?”
“At this point, anything that doesn’t eat me first.”
“I never did get my cheat pizza.”
“I think you deserve it,” you grin.
“So let’s go pick up some pizza. Then we can go back to your place and you can take care of me.”
A broad smile spreads across your face. “You aren’t getting sick of me yet?”
“Not even a little bit.”
He pulls you in front of him and kisses you full on, not wildly but enough to make it clear to anyone who sees you what’s going on. He chuckles when he lets you go and glances down the hallway where Jay is still holding court with his hangers-on.
“Jay,” he calls, waiting until he’s sure he has his enemy’s attention, “you lose.”
*
When you arrive at work on Monday, it’s with a considerable level of anxiety. Things have definitely gotten more complicated. Jay is, after all, a New Japan performer, and as the liaison between New Japan and US promotions, that means you’re supposed to work with him. Even the idea of being in the same room with him makes you shake a little. You and David finally spent a night apart so that he wouldn’t have to get up early when you did, but you’d still been texting until you both fell asleep. Truthfully, Jay hadn’t been on your mind as long as you were with David but now you can’t avoid thinking about him.
What you have with David feels amazing but it’s also new and fragile, a tiny shoot rising up from the soil, still trying to grow and lay down roots at the same time. You want to protect it and you know that Jay wants to kill it off because no one embarrasses him the way the two of you have. You don’t know what he’s planning to do, you just know you have to be wary of it.
For the first part of the day, it’s just backstage people and the production team going through what’s needed for the day’s tapings. Talent will arrive in the afternoon, followed by a small audience. You make your notes on who needs to be where and making sure it lines up with what Tokyo tells you they’re expecting. Some of them have to fly to California to do shows there and you need to make sure the tapings happening in the next few days aren’t going to interfere with any of those plans.
“Did you get it out of your system?”
He pounces on you out of nowhere, crowding you against the wall, eyes incandescent with anger. It’s hours before any of the performers are supposed to be here, which makes it a perfect time for him to ambush you.
“Get what out of my system, Jay?” you gasp, trying to hide how much he’s scared you.
“Don’t be coy,” he hisses. “This little romantic excursion you decided to send yourself on.”
“I told you, I felt like I’d accomplished all I could in the job and so I decided to grab this new opportunity-”
“I know exactly what you did and not because you told me anything. I got your cute little note. Blocking me on social media and everything was an especially nice touch. After everything we’d been through, everything I’d done for you, you didn’t even have the guts to say any of that bullshit to my face.”
“Ok, I should have done that. I owed you that. I apologize and I hope it didn’t cause you any…”
You look into his eyes and just freeze. He’s so sickeningly beautiful and frightening at that moment that there’s nothing you can do, not appease him, not flatter him, not reject him. You were right when you said you needed to get away from him to get over him, you just didn’t expect that he’d refuse to give you the chance.
“Aren’t you cute with your little prepared business speech. ‘I’m so sorry, Jay, I hope you found another person to do my job because that’s all that was going on, just me being your secretary.’ How long have you been memorizing that for when you finally had to see me again?
“You’ve had your fun, your laughs at my expense, but it ends now.”
“How fucking dare you!” Now you’ve found your voice and your strength. “You think you get to order me around like I’m something you own? I don’t work for you anymore. My job is here now. My life is here now.”
Jay straightens up to his full height, regarding you with a smirk. “Your life? Is that what you’re calling him now?”
“I meant just… everything.”
“Aw, David must feel so happy thinking this is where it ends.”
“As far as you and I are concerned, it has ended.” You glare at him. “I love him.”
The soft laugh he gives you is utterly unnerving. “You love me. You’ve loved me for years. Nothing’s changed. You ran off here because you got it in your head that you could make yourself love him, because you wanted to get back at me for whatever it is you think I’ve done to you. And you couldn’t even be around me and convince yourself at the same time that you really want him.”
“You arrogant prick. What the hell do you know about what I want?”
He laughs a little and captures your face with one hand, pressing his lips close to your ear.
“I love how angry you get when you know I’m right. And I love having you trapped like this.”
“Trapped how? I’m going to walk away from you and it’s going to be like this never happened. I’m going to have fun imagining David wiping that condescending look off your face for a few weeks until I finally get to see him do it.”
“Do you seriously think anyone in New Japan is going to think twice about dumping him if I tell them that I won’t work with him?”
“Whatever. He’s doing fine here.”
“Oh yes, he’s doing so well in Impact, the company that’s riding a wave of popularity because they’re working with other, bigger companies. I’m sure they’d stand up for him against all of their partners. I’m sure he’s so much more important to them than being able to work with me or any other real stars.”
He chuckles a little, pressing his face against yours.
“That’s the funny thing about forbidden doors. When they close, they all close at once.”
“Oh, so you’re threatening to get him shut out of every wrestling company just because you’re annoyed he stole your assistant.”
“You sell yourself short. But if you want to put it that way, yes.”
“You don’t have the attention span. You’ll get distracted by someone else you think has wronged you by the end of the week.”
“If that’s how you want to approach this, go right ahead. If I were a betting man, I wouldn’t like your odds of being right but I already know you’re going to do what you want.”
He grips your head firmly and plants a hard kiss on your forehead before backing off and sauntering down the hall as if nothing’s happened.
You were right when you told David he should stay away from you. This is bad.

Raise the Stakes, Part One
So this is a sequel to Place Your Bets. It's actually just the first part of a sequel because I'm trying to publish things in shorter segments. Time is valuable and I know it can be tricky to sit down and read through someone's 8,000-word opus.
That said, you will have to read Place Your Bets first or this isn't going to make any sense.
Pairing: David Finlay x OFC with mentioned Jay White x OFC
Word count: 1,641
Content advisory: Brief sexual references, Jay being an emotionally abusive asshole
You’ve tried three or four times to reconcile the pay statement from New Japan with the list of expenses you submitted for Jay last week. They’re different. The check is lower than it should be and even though it’s not by a lot, this sort of thing drives Jay mental and he’s been in such a mood since you dared go on a date that you’re going to extraordinary lengths to try to pacify him.
If anything, you feel like making more of an effort is making him harder on you. He’s had you working practically around the clock, thinking nothing of waking you up in the middle of the night to demand you find some obscure record, or complaining that he doesn’t understand something. He’s demanded you reschedule every appointment you’ve made for him at least once, so that everyone who’s relying on you so that they can work with him has been screaming at you.
So you’re exhausted and anxious and you can’t figure out why you have a check that doesn’t match your invoice because the accounting department here codes everything differently, so the amounts per line are combined or split up in ways you don’t understand and you have to patch it back together. It’s impossible.
The thing is, you’ve done it before. The expense checks are screwed up 4 times out of 5 and it’s always a chore that takes you hours to resolve. You’ve done this when you’ve been travelling nonstop for a day, when Jay has been screaming at you for hours, and when you’ve been surviving on coffee and stubbornness. The difference now is that you’re distracted.
In the years you’ve had this job, you’ve never felt distracted this way. You keep replaying your night with Finlay in your mind and you catch yourself smiling like an idiot at the way your stomach flips. Despite the fact that Jay’s been keeping you on a tight leash, you’ve caught plenty of glimpses of David around the place. Sometimes, you’ll pass close enough that you catch a whiff of his soft amber-y cologne and your skin shivers. And you look. Jay isn’t interested enough in you to watch you closely enough to see what you’re doing as long as he knows he can order you around whenever he feels like it.
David looks back, too, with a sly smile or a wink. He actually has to be a little more cautious about it because Jay has been watching him since their New Japan Cup match, already fantasizing about revenge. But he has his techniques. He’ll glance over and lock eyes with Jay before letting them drift to you. The looks you exchange feel almost as intimate as when the two of you were naked in his bed together.
You’ve sent a couple of cryptic text messages back and forth but David’s perfectly aware that Jay will flip through your phone without even asking because he considers it his property. It’s killing you, always being in each other’s orbit and being unable to do anything about it. But more importantly, it’s distracting you from work.
You’re standing over the table, using a pencil to note where you think the things from your invoice have been entered on the payment statement when your breath catches. There’s that scent in the room with you, easing close behind you until you feel a strong pair of arms close around you.
“Sorry, I couldn’t help myself,” he murmurs into your skin.
You exhale and let yourself melt into him, resting your hands over his as you incline your head back.
“I can’t stop thinking about you,” you breathe.
He holds you a little tighter.
“I have to go back to the States to do some Impact shows. I’ll be gone a few weeks.”
You whine quietly.
“I’m leaving tomorrow night.”
“It’s not fair.”
He hums and kisses his way up your neck, making your whole body tremble.
“Any chance you could sneak out tonight?”
“I’d like to see someone try and stop me.”
“The slave driver won’t be happy.”
“I cannot tell you how little I care right now.”
He loosens his hold and you take the opportunity to turn around, touching your lips to his as you’ve been longing to do for days. You peck at each other a few times, smiling, both of your eyes lit from within.
“I’m in room-“
“I know what room you’re in,” you grin.
“Are you stalking me?”
“Damn right I am.”
You give in to the urge to kiss a little more urgently until a noise at the door has you jumping apart like reversed magnets.
You’re terrified it’s Jay because you are in no way ready for that showdown. But it’s Sanada coming to get a drink from the vending machine. He cocks an eyebrow at the two of you, which is enough to let you know that he’s aware of the nature of what he’s interrupted.
It isn’t a problem, though. He doesn’t talk to Jay unless they have a match and even then it’s only going over the game plan. He’ll gossip to his LIJ buddies but it’ll stay within their tight little circle. They'd rather laugh at Jay behind his back.
When he leaves, David takes your hand and the two of you are smiling like teenagers again.
“Guess I should run away before we really get caught.”
You kiss him, fervently, and you’re hardly able to pull yourself away.
“I’ll text you when I know what time I can escape.”
You’re both blushing as he exits the room. When you turn around to face your payment problem, you could swear it’s gotten more complicated than it was before.
*
“I need you to reschedule that appointment with the physio guy to Thursday,” Jay grumbles.
He’s been hovering since he came in, although he hasn’t been quite as obstreperous as usual, muttering to himself or to his game console rather than outright trying to interrupt you. You could take your work to your room but then he would be texting and calling you all the time, assuming that you weren’t working if he couldn’t see it. You’re still trying to untangle the knots of the expense report and it’s tantalizingly close. You’ve gotten nearly this far a couple of times only to be forced to backtrack and re-evaluate but this time you can see your way through; just a couple of twists and tugs and you’ll have it all smoothed out.
You roll your eyes at the sound of Jay’s voice, content that he can’t see your face from his vantage point.
“We’ve been through this, Jay. This guy is a specialist they’ve brought in and his schedule’s been set by the company. No changes, no exceptions.”
“Well you need to ask, at least,” he huffs.
“Why? All it’s going to do is aggravate management and you won’t get what you ask for.” You pivot to face him. “Why would you even want to change it?”
“I have something I want to do on Wednesday, not that it’s any of your business. I’d rather see him on Thursday.”
“It’s not going to happen.”
You fully expect from the look on his face that he’s going to lose it and start screaming about how you’re just there to do what he says. But though his lips twitch and his nostrils flare. He says nothing. Perhaps this is it. Perhaps this is the week that he fires you and replaces you with someone new who’ll do everything he says and flatter his ego without the attitude you’re prone to giving him. A couple of times, he’s told you that you were fired in a rage, only to contact you hours later and start grumpily giving you orders again. He never apologizes when this happens but he’s always a little quieter and less belligerent for a few days.
This nonverbal fury is something new, so maybe it’s a sign that the end is nigh. Maybe you’ll suddenly find a way to reinvent yourself without Jay White in your life. Take a calligraphy class. Teach English at some private business school. Get a dog. Have a relationship with someone who could love you back.
With that in mind, you force yourself to work out the final parts of the project that’s haunted you all day. You’re so happy when it’s done, when you understand exactly what’s missing and what you need to tell them to have it corrected, that you want to stand up and cheer and pat yourself on the back because god knows that no one else will.
Normally, you’d email the head office right away and go through everything you’ve found in concise bullet points to make sure you’re understood but instead, you close your laptop and stand up.
“Right,” you say breezily, “I'm off then.”
“Off where?” he growls without looking at you. “Another date?”
“Actually, yes.”
“This is becoming a problem.”
“No, it isn’t. I’ve done everything that’s required of me. I’ve jumped through every insane hoop, dodged every trap you’ve given me. You know perfectly well that the fact that I’ve been… that I’ve… There is no issue with my work.”
“I say it’s becoming a problem and in this equation, I’m the only one who matters.”
His reflexive cruelty always hits you right in the stomach, like you’re in the ring with him, and knowing that you have someone who wants to be with you and wants to please you doesn’t dull that at all.
“I matter Jay,” you say quietly. “I just don’t matter to you.”
You see a muscle in his beck twitch but even though you give him a moment, he says nothing. And it’s a painful realization that the only reason you’re waiting is in the desperate hope that he’ll contradict you, that he’ll surprise you for once in his life.

Raise the Stakes, Part 7
Bit of a longer section this time... Don't forget to catch up by reading Place Your Bets and Parts 1-6 of this story, linked in the Master List. (Please forgive me for not posting every link separately just this once.) I'm basically writing this one around whatever is happening on Impact/ New Japan every week, so I know some of the timing is screwed up but I didn't expect that this was going to be picked up as a plotline while I was writing the damn story.
Pairing: David Finlay x OFC (referenced Jay White x OFC)
Word count: 3,206
Content advisory: graphic sexual content, cursing, vaguely stalker-ish behavior that some might find troubling
Impact is a weird place. At least, it seems weird compared to New Japan, where everything is scheduled and organized and planned. Impact seems like it’s always on the brink of disaster but the people who’ve been here a long time seem to enjoy it a little, the happy chaos that makes things unpredictable. Everyone can and does screw up occasionally, so the one thing that’s intolerable here is acting like you’re infallible.
Since you arrived to fill the newly created position of talent liaison between the two companies, you’ve realized how insanely hard you’ve been working for the last few years. You always knew you were doing too much but being at a place that runs so differently, you find yourself worrying that you’re not doing enough. A couple of times, you’ve started helping to move equipment to demonstrate that you’re working hard.
The more low-key atmosphere seems to make everyone friendlier, which means that it hasn’t been difficult for you to get along with people. You’ll join in when everyone goes to a bar, or out for dinner. But the whole time, you’re keeping an eye on him.
You’re not exactly clear on why David and Juice got sent back to Impact when there’s clearly no plan to use them immediately. On the other hand, it’s not like either of them is going to be part of a huge program back in Japan, so it’s probably just a nice gesture so that the guys can see their families and friends before they get featured on TV every week. The nice part for you is that Fin Juice are always brought in for rehearsals, tapings, meetings, all the things that you’re part of, even if they aren’t used on screen. Impact want to use them as much as they can.
You keep your distance. When he’d first seen you, he’d gotten in your face almost immediately, although he waited until there weren’t any witnesses.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” he hissed.
“I’m working for Impact now,” you’d answered coolly. “I guess you’re going to have to get used to having me around.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“Maybe I just want to show a wider range of experience on my CV.” It was obvious that he didn’t believe a word you said, so you decided to drop all pretense. “I’m here because you’re here. Because I want to be close to you.”
“Well you’re shit out of luck there, sweetheart,” he snarled, “because I don’t want you anywhere near me.”
“I’m not going to get in your way or anything. If you don’t want to be around me, you don’t have to.”
“What sort of weird little game is it the two of you have going? Is he pissed because I haven’t told him that I’ll face him for his stupid title? Or is he just worried that I’ll beat him, again, and he thinks that sending you here is going to throw me off my game? Because I promise, I’m not falling into that trap again.”
“He has nothing to do with me being here,” you explained. “He didn’t even know I was moving. I came here for you.”
He sized you up, obviously still furious at having to be around you.
“Whatever he’s sent you here to do,” he growled, “I don’t care. Whatever we might have been before, we’re not friends, we’re not on good terms. I have no interest in being anywhere near you.”
“That’s fine,” you responded, voice weak with shame. “As far as I’m concerned, I’m just happy to be around you.”
“Shut the fuck up.”
“I’m serious. I know you don’t want anything to do with me. So just keep ignoring me. I’ll stay out of your way.”
Immediately, you could see that he was frustrated. He’d wanted to fight, maybe to tell you that you were wrong or that nothing could ever happen between you again. He hadn’t been prepared for you to just admit defeat and admit that you were so sad that you’d followed a man who couldn’t have cared less about your existence all this way.
Or perhaps he’d been angry because he sensed that you’d followed him here because you felt like he did care about you, that all the vitriol he’d spewed in your direction seemed like a cover for the fact that he had deep feelings for you, feelings that hadn’t been obliterated by seeing you back with Jay.
When you’re occupied, this feels like the exact job you wanted. When you went to Gedo and told him that you were going to quit, you’d made a calculated gamble. New Japan didn’t like to lose people and their fragile status because of the pandemic and the hiring of a new president made them all the more eager to hold on to the people they had.
At first, Gedo had just thought that there was a problem with you and Jay and had encouraged you to let it blow over. He hadn’t asked, although he was clearly curious. Everyone knew the man had an appetite for gossip. But as he’d listened to your reasoned case about your job and how you weren’t ever going to move on to something bigger and better, he’d come to agree, which was amazing since you hadn’t even given it much thought yourself until you’d sat down.
You’d been prepared to just quit and go back to the United States, to stake out Impact tapings and live dates if you had to, but Gedo had come up with a better solution. You would be the point person for New Japan with Impact and other American promotions. No one in Japan wanted to manage these things from a distance and the few American employees they had were occupied with the Los Angeles dojo.
You’d asked that you be the one to tell Jay that you were leaving, since you’d worked exclusively with him for so long. In the end, that had taken the form of a note you’d left him when you took off for the airport. You’d blocked him from your phone, from social media, everything. There was nothing wrong between you. There was nothing at all between you. Because if there was anything connecting you, Jay could find a way to get you to do what he wanted, to keep you captive the way you had been for years.
True to his word, David will have nothing to do with you. The other New Japan talents can work with you. If he needs anything, he sends his partner to work things out. You don’t push it because what you’re doing is already bordering on creepy. If you’re wrong and he really doesn’t feel anything for you, it’s well beyond creepy.
When you aren’t thinking about what kind of monster you are, though, the job is fun. It’s great meeting all the new people and, as bawdy and gross as they are, you get along especially well with Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows. They’re legends in Japan, so there’s a bit of a “rock star” aura about them for you. But they’re also just juvenile and dumb and sometimes, at the end of a long day, that can be very welcome.
Karl has been jokingly trying to grab your clipboard with all your notes from you throughout the day, and you’ve been telling him that he’s getting fined every time he does it. He walks by as if he’s not going to say anything at first but as he passes, he reaches back and grabs the clipboard. Your grip tightens immediately and you hug the board to your body. He isn’t even trying and you still need most of your strength to hold on.
The two of you struggle theatrically for a few moments, until he decides to surprise you by letting go. It unfortunately catches you a little too much by surprise and you accidentally smack yourself in the face, the metal clamp nailing you right underneath the eye.
“Oh my god!” Karl puts his hands on either side of your face, trying to get a look. “Are you ok? Are you hurt?”
He sounds legitimately mortified at the accident, which makes you laugh a little. You’re about to crack a joke at him when another voice cuts in.
“What the fuck? What happened?”
Out of nowhere, David Finlay is standing next to you like a chaperone, his eyes demanding an explanation.
“It’s fine,” you mumble, rubbing at your face a little. “Just an accident.”
David’s face flushes when he sees that everything is amiable. You pat Karl on the cheek and give a tough little smile.
“Good.” David grows visibly tense as he says that final word and quickly turns on his heel.
“Think someone has a crush on you,” Karl chuckles once he’s out of earshot.
You laugh but make a mental note. It’s not just you that thinks there’s something there.
This incident pushes you to be just a little bolder and so, when you realize that the both of you are going to be staying a bit later than others, you sneak out to the parking lot and move your car so that it’s close to David’s. It’s because you truly believe that there’s still some kind of unresolved tension between you. As you’re heading back to the building, though, you can’t help but think about how you’d feel if someone acted this way towards you.
The rest of the day, you make sure to stay well clear of Finlay. It isn’t that difficult but you still notice him a few times, popping up near where you are. Is he doing this on purpose? Is he watching you? Although you’re always aware of him in your peripheral vision, you don’t ever look directly to see if he’s got his eyes on you. Somehow, though, you can feel his gaze lingering.
You putter around after you’ve completed your work for the day so that you can accidentally run into him in the parking lot. You exit a few paces behind him and try to figure a way to get him to at least say a few words.
“Thanks for coming to my rescue,” you call as you turn towards your car.
He looks up, glaring, like he wants to start a fight. It’s possible that he does, but that would involve having to talk to you and he definitely doesn’t want to do that. So he just gives you a poisoned look.
“Can you give me something just this once? I’ve stayed away from you, I’ve given you all the space I possibly can. I make it easy for you to pretend like I don’t even exist. Would it absolutely kill you to acknowledge that you were worried about me for three-quarters of a second earlier?”
“Don’t know what difference it makes.”
“Maybe I’d just like the little ego boost?”
“Fine, then,” he grunts, refusing to meet your eyes. “I rushed over because I saw what I thought was someone getting hurt. Karl can be kind of hard to take sometimes and I was worried he was acting stupid.”
You smile just a little at the admission. The second he notices this, he continues.
“If I’d realized it was you, I wouldn’t have bothered.”
‘Could you please stop it?” You can feel tears gathering in your throat and you suspect he can hear it too. He turns to go without another word and for the first time since you’ve arrived here, you can’t just let him go.
“Wait!” You run up to him, grabbing hold of his arms. “I know that you hate me and that I probably deserve that. I know I deserve it. But can you just try being human with me for a second?”
He gives an exasperated sigh and rolls his eyes.
“What do you want?”
He sounds so fed up that you lose your nerve and are reduced to a stammering mess as you try to figure out what you need to tell him.
“I think you did see that it was me who was with Anderson. I think that you came rushing over because you saw me get hit and despite everything, you were worried about me. I think that even though you hate me, there’s a part of you that… that doesn’t. And I want to know if I’m right.”
If he’s affected by what you’re saying, he’s giving you no sign.
“Think what you want. It doesn’t matter.”
He tries to pivot but you hold on to him, grabbing his wrists.
“Are you not even a little bit flattered to know a girl moved from another continent just so that she could be close enough to admire you from a distance?”
“Yeah, you’re not at much of a distance right now.”
“Am I that repugnant?”
His face grows darker and he grabs both your wrists, pushing you back against your own car. His lips flutter like he’s trying to decide which bits of bile to hit you with first. You wonder if the sensation of your bodies being close for the first time in months is having the same effect on him that it is on you. He’s certainly breathing heavily, his chest swelling against yours.
He appears ready to speak but the only word that tumbles from his lips is “Fuck.”
He pins your wrists against the car and presses his lips to yours. It’s not the wild, angry kiss you might have expected, either. It’s hesitant and soft but insistent. After a few moments of this, you loosens his hold on your wrists and you immediately run your hands up his biceps and grab hold of his shoulders. He tenses under your touch, so you can feel the bulge of the muscle there. He’s not carved like Jay, not close, but all that power and strength is still there, hidden just beneath the surface. Although it’s never occurred to you before, it feels intimate and intensely sexy.
The kisses continue, increasing in intensity with your lips opening a little, your tongues dipping into each other’s mouths, until you’re both practically tearing into each other, grinding your bodies against the side of your car. Clumsily, he reaches for the door handle and, realizing what he’s trying to do, you slide your hand over to complete the job. You have to separate momentarily so that you can open the door, but he doesn’t even give you the chance to utter a word, pushing you down on the back seat and climbing on top of you before picking up very much where you’d left off.
He mutters curses when he breaks for air, clamping his hands around your face, as if he had to hold you there, as if this wasn’t exactly what you want to be doing. You can feel the rigid outline of his erection against your thigh and you ease one hand over it, rubbing the palm of your hand along the length until he pushes back a little.
He continues to plant wet, angry kisses over your chest as he works to open the buttons of your shirt with remarkable dexterity. He frees your breasts from the cups of your bra, roughly rubbing them and sucking one nipple and then the other hard between his lips and teeth.
“Play with your tits,” he rasps, pushing himself up and grabbing his belt.
You’re happy to oblige, making a show of running your fingers around the aureole and over the nipple, making each one prick up even more, then licking your fingers before returning them to the tender little peaks.
He’s worked his cock free and strokes slowly, his eyes fixed on your chest as you do as you’re told. You try to get his attention on your face, at least momentarily, but he’s consciously avoiding eye contact. After a few minutes, he pushes your skirt up and pulls your panties down a little, increasing the speed of his hand as he stares at your wet pussy. He brings his tip close to your entrance, only to grimace and move back.
Worried that he’s about to run away despite the condition he’s in, you lean forward as much as you can, gently pushing his hand out of the way and replacing it with your own, guiding his engorged prick into your mouth. God, the sounds he makes, half-words and cries tumbling out of him in blind lust. Surreptitiously, you slide the rest of the way out of your underwear and run your hand over his thick thigh, tucking the panties carefully into the back pocket of his jeans. Let him find those a little later, when he’s questioning whether this was a good idea.
He begins to shudder a little but rather than finish in your mouth, he grabs a handful of your hair and shoves you back down on the seat. Once again, he pumps his cock, now shiny with saliva and precum, and once again, he’s taking pains not to look you in the eye.
“Touch yourself.” He nods at you and watches as you let one hand glide down your body, over your aching pussy.
The two of you continue like that, moaning as you both grow more excited. You hold yourself back a little, not wanting things to be over this quickly and also hoping that he’ll push inside you, the way you want so much.
“No,” he grunts, "Make yourself come.”
And so, a little begrudgingly, you increase the pressure on your clit, trying to keep your hand steady despite how slippery it is, watching as his movements grow faster as well. Just as you can feel yourself about to burst, you’re able to find his hand with yours, lacing your fingers through his. He doesn't resist. That contact is enough to pull you over the edge, and at the same moment, you feel the hot streams of his come hitting your chest as he gives a sort of ecstatic, pained cry.
You run your fingers through the mess on your skin, laughing softly. You have to use your shirt to wipe yourself off and as you do, you notice how ashamed he looks, turning his face as far away from you as he can.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbles. “I should have asked.”
“It’s fine.”
He doesn’t look reassured by this at all. He looks a little mortified, so you wrap your arm around his neck and pull him into a kiss. For a few seconds, he responds, eagerly even. But then he pulls back, shaking his head.
“No, I have to go, I can’t do this.”
“Can we at least talk?”
He shakes his head again and scrambles backward out of the car, refastening his pants as he does. He doesn’t even bother with the belt, just turns and walks away.
You crawl out of the car, clutching your shirt closed rather than lose the time it would take to do it up again.
“David, come on, we aren’t just going to pretend that didn’t happen.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for… I got a bit carried away. I’ll talk to you tomorrow or whatever.” He never even glances back.
