Hello everyone! I hope you’re all doing well and that you’ve been able to stay safe and healthy during the pandemic (and that the easing of some restrictions depending on where you are has not negatively affected you). After binge watching legendary defender on netflix I’ve had the undying and uncontrollable urge to do a voltron rp. Now I bet you’re all wondering what I want and if you’re going to get to do some shipping…….we’ll I guess you’re just going to have to read on and find out.

I’m looking for literate rper’s only. That means people who write in third person past tense, can give me at the very least one well thought out and fleshed paragraph (as well as be willing to write more when the situation calls for it) and has a decent grasp on their spelling, grammar and punctuation. I will not yell at you for the occasional bout of typonese but one liners, one worders, poorly written responses and lazy writing in general will not keep me around. If I can’t read what you’ve written and you’re not willing to put some effort in or correct it then there’s no point in me sticking around. I also require rper’s who’ve actually watched voltron whether it be legendary defender, defender of the universe or voltron force. If you’re someone whose a stickler for canon accuracy then I’m probably not the rper for you. When I rp in a fandom setting I treat it a bit like a base as in there’s rules to follow but I don’t have to follow them as if I’m reading the show script. To put it simply I value creativity and ideas that allow a different take on the characters and what could’ve happened.

I only rp male alien or alien hybrid characters and they’re premade but flexible in how they’re written. I do not have pictures nor do I desire to spend endless hours of time to find a face claim of a creature that isn’t the typical different coloured humanoids you see in voltron. I have descriptions and that’s it. I do not care if your character is made up on the spot or if you prefer to rp as a canon character. Shippers……I’m sorry but I will not rp a canon character as anything other than a side, I do not rp them as mains so if you were looking for some sheith or klance I’m sorry to disappoint you. That being said you are free to play as any canon character you desire or an oc as I’m open to oc x oc pairings or oc x canon pairings (you being the canon character) and I do either MxM or FxM pairings. Romance and non fade to black smut will both occur in the rp but it must be slow burn. I do not do fast paced love at first sight as it’s just not something that holds my interest. No sub dom dynamics, switch dynamics only and please no characters whose entire personality is just one emotion or one trait they have.

Guys…..please don’t call my aliens furries or whatever. I don’t rp generic spray painted humans and we’re rping in a world full of wacky and crazy aliens that have fur,scales,tails,multiple arms, etc so I find it Incredibly annoying to have a label forced on my character like it’s a bad thing. Alien means something not from earth, if a human was to be born on altea or daibazzal, it’d be considered an alien despite probably being a hundred percent human. If your view and comfort zone is restricted to aliens that look like an altean and nothing else then you needn’t not message me. I’m not going to make you rp with me if this is a dealbreaker so if you don’t heed this warning then you do not be rude after pulling a shocked pikachu. Be mature about it if you realise it’s a deal breaker rather than just blocking or suddenly deciding you no longer want to talk to me and that you’ll just ignore me till I unfriend you.

DO NOT COME TO ME SAYING OR ASKING YOU WANNA DO A SHEITH RP/ DO YOU RP AS THESE CANON CHARACTERS! I cannot stress this enough. I don’t know how I can make it any clearer that I do not do canon character mains nor do I do rp’s solely for the purpose of shipping said rp characters. As I’ve said before, if you wanna play a canon character go ahead but I will not rp a canon character as anything other than a side. My oc’s are my mains.

You and your characters must be 18+. I’m in my twenties and will not rp with a minor, especially since I have mature and adult themes in my rp’s that I do not want to get into trouble for Rping them with someone whose underaged. Underaged characters are just……..a big no for the sole fact that my characters are adults and that i do not feel uncomfortable playing against underaged characters.

You must be able to give me one or more responses a day. If it’s been two weeks since the last response and you’ve mysteriously disappeared then I’m not going to stick around for the day you decide to answer me. I do not like having my time wasted for any reason. My time zone is the eastern Australian time zone but I’m available and awake at odd hours so time zones aren’t too big of an issue for me. Remember that I’m looking for a long term partner, someone to carry an rp with for more than just a few days or a week and someone to write multiple stories with.

I have tonnes of ideas and head cannons for the rp but I’m open to brainstorming and ideas. We can mix and match ideas till we get something we both like. I want this to be a shared job, don’t expect me to be the one to carry everything just cause I’m the one supplying the idea. Down below I’ve decided to list a couple of ideas that I have:

New school defenders:

the paladins of voltron have been defending the universe for years. Many stories of their countless victories, battles and struggles are something that every parent who was alive during the war told their children. Once the main three were taken out (haggar, lotor and zarkon) the paladins settled down to teaching the garrisons new generation of cadets. The new change in curriculum was welcome for many as well as a new change in ship style. To make sure that peace could be maintained in every quadrant of every galaxy the paladins of voltron has trained the cadets to fly animal styled space ships like the lions. The animal ship a pilot was assigned depended on their personality, strengths, weaknesses, how well they worked in a team and their style of fighting and piloting skills. The importance of team bonding was something the paladins basically preached. When news of the return of an old foe forces the paladins to return to their jobs as voltrons warriors and they suddenly disappear many write them off as dead or perhaps in distress. None of the superiors are interested to find out….. so who will?

Lotor’s reign:

It was unbelievable. It couldn’t be true. It had to not be true. Voltron taken down by lotor, son of the mighty emperor zarkon himself, and the paladins were now working for him without question as his top generals?! When the news had first hit many people had panicked whilst countless others had been slain for daring to believe and protest that it was all just some lie made up by the half galran prince who was now an emperor like his father before him. Princess Allura herself was locked away in an unknown location after refusing the cruel man’s hand in marriage so she is no help for what is now a lost hope. Lotor’s reign had well and truly begun all those years ago and it was holding steady. People had forgotten long ago that even in complete and utter darkness….one can always find a speck of light that burns bright no anger how small.

Mirror mirror:

For many years people believed the galra were a race of cruel, vicious, animalistic thinking beings whose only goal was to destroy and conquer words. No one would’ve ever believed that it was the peacekeeping alteans that had been working to plot the galaxy’s downfall. Voltron, belonged to the galrans, they’d been the ones who’d built it after all despite letting alfor pilot voltron’s right arm. When the king had been turned down on his idea to share the mighty robotic war machine he simply built his own. Five dragons that formed dracotron were what the alteans used as their voltron and weapon to conquer the galaxies. Emperor zarkon, under the advice of Haggar the witch, was one of the few world leaders who managed to get his people to safety. Ever since watching the great kingdoms that he’d known for almost ten thousand years fall under the alteans greed and obsession for power over peace, he prayed for miracle in whatever form he could get it in. When two young stragglers end up stranded on the galra’s second home world, the cards of fate are laid according to haggar, much to everyone else’s confusion. What could two lost souls possibly do to bring back what was lost to the alteans?

Gamora’s guns:

The guns of Gamora was a rebel group with the goal of foiling any plans of the altean empress allura. Led by the brave commander Sven and his somewhat neurotic sidekick Slav, the gun’s were spread far across the galaxy in little pockets of altean dominated space to keep tabs on the empires schemes and try their best to counteract them. The new recruits were aliens and humans from far and wide working together hand in hand to try and prevent a reign of terror from truly taking over. When plans for creating a super weapon fall on the ears of a trusted source, the newest batch of recruits are sent to locate, find and bring back the blueprints. Of course, such things are easier said than done.

The chosen:

Keith.lance.hunk.shiro (or Sven, depends on whether you want this to follow a legendary defender type story arc or one of the older series). Allura. Pidge. These were names that belonged to the universe’s greatest heroes. Legends beyond all compare. They were champions of the universe and paladins of the mightiest robotic warrior to have ever been built: voltron. The great robot and the lions that formed it were well over ten thousand years old…..sadly for the paladins, they knew that they wouldn’t live to or beyond the great age their lions and oldest enemies had. The galaxy garrison had worked extra hard on ensuring that the next generation of pilots would be suitable candidates for the possibility of becoming voltron’s future paladins. Each paladin chose a student whom they felt like would be the most suitable to take their place and trained them with the knowledge that they were not the ones who had the final decision as to who flew who…..or even if they’d fly at all. What happens when one student fails and is rejected by not one but all the lions? What becomes of them and what is their place on team voltron? What happens to the rest of the team? Only time will tell, according to coran, such a thing has never happened before……but what happens if it does?

I have tonnes of ideas and head cannons for the rp but I’m open to brainstorming and ideas. We can mix and match ideas till we get something we both like. I want this to be a shared job, don’t expect me to be the one to carry everything just cause I’m the one supplying the idea. Down below I’ve decided to list a couple of ideas that I have:

When news of the return of an old foe forces the paladins to return to their jobs as voltrons warriors and they suddenly disappear many write them off as dead or perhaps in distress. None of the superiors are interested to find out….. so who will?

Lotor’s reign:

It was unbelievable. It couldn’t be true. It had to not be true. Voltron taken down by lotor, son of the mighty emperor zarkon himself, and the paladins were now working for him without question as his top generals?! When the news had first hit many people had panicked whilst countless others had been slain for daring to believe and protest that it was all just some lie made up by the half galran prince who was now an emperor like his father before him. Princess Allura herself was locked away in an unknown location after refusing the cruel man’s hand in marriage so she is no help for what is now a lost hope. Lotor’s reign had well and truly begun all those years ago and it was holding steady. People had forgotten long ago that even in complete and utter darkness….one can always find a speck of light that burns bright no anger how small.

Ever since watching the great kingdoms that he’d known for almost ten thousand years fall under the alteans greed and obsession for power over peace, he prayed for miracle in whatever form he could get it in. When two young stragglers end up stranded on the galra’s second home world, the cards of fate are laid according to haggar, much to everyone else’s confusion. What could two lost souls possibly do to bring back what was lost to the alteans?

The guns of Gamora was a rebel group with the goal of foiling any plans of the altean empress allura. Led by the brave commander Sven and his somewhat neurotic sidekick Slav, the gun’s were spread far across the galaxy in little pockets of altean dominated space to keep tabs on the empires schemes and try their best to counteract them. The new recruits were aliens and humans from far and wide working together hand in hand to try and prevent a reign of terror from truly taking over. When plans for creating a super weapon fall on the ears of a trusted source, the newest batch of recruits are sent to locate, find and bring back the blueprints. Of course, such things are easier said than done.

I should have made a noise. But I didn't. Instead, I let fear take over and slunk in underneath the desk too appalled to do anything except for make a disgusted face. Dad had been so caught up in his "love making" he didn't even notice me, thank fucking god.

I didn't even see the car before it careened past me. I heard the screeching of breaks though. I saw the glass that scattered on the ground. And the awful thunking as the car flipped on its back.

And I made the nine, one, one call anonymously alerting the authorities of the car accident. But I didn't tell anyone the truth of what happened that night. I was too convinced it was my fault. Instead, I hid in the neighbor's bushes never minding that the dirt, twigs, and bugs were ruining the expensive, awful pink dress my mother had bought.

The next day I went away. I escaped to college, and no one was any wiser about what had happened that night. As far as the world knew, world famous actor Paul Berkeley had gotten into a car accident high on drugs on the way to a party. And I was fine with letting the world believe that especially if it meant I couldn't do anymore damage to my own world.

After all, he was a movie star. He had everything. What could he possibly have to lose? Meanwhile, I had my family and my future to worry about.

But the cracks were already there. The night had gotten to me. And two years later, I couldn't hide anymore. I couldn't live the lie. So, I quit school. I walked out of a mid-term. Much to my mother's horror.

It wasn't that surprising, really. Anyone who knew me wouldn't have been shocked my departure considering. Besides my mother that is. After the accident, everything crumbled away. It was revealed that Dad was wanted for embezzlement, and he left without so much as a note. That alone was enough to get to me.

The truth was, I didn't feel like I belonged anywhere anymore. I wanted to disappear. But the world wouldn't let me. So instead of disappearing, I went home which was the next best thing.

Mom wasn't good with that though. She was determined to find out the truth. And I guess, the universe was on her side. Because the moment she enrolled me in therapy, was the moment I had to face the very person that had crashed my world in the first place. I didn't realize he was also going to be the person to put it back together too. Because for the second time in almost two years, Paul Berkeley crashed into my life again. At the place where I was trying to fix it. Therapy.

I shouldn't have been that surprised, really. There was no telling who someone might run into at a therapist's office in Los Angeles. Everyone was crazy or getting there. And the only people who weren't in therapy were the ones that couldn't afford it.

Still, it felt like the world was mocking me when I saw Paul Berkeley sitting in the waiting room. He looked exactly the way he did in his GQ spread. America's favorite bad boy. His black t-shirt fit snuggly over his lithe, muscled form. And his long, brown hair made him look like some tragic model. His legs were stretched out, crossed over each other, and he wore expensive looking leather motorcycle boots. Even though he had on sunglasses covering most of his face, there was no denying that it was him.

In that moment, I knew exactly how Rick from Casablanca felt. Out of all the therapist's office, in all the world, he had to walk into mine. Whatever divine power controlled the universe was a fucking bastard. Truly.

But it wasn't as if Paul knew who I was, and if the world was kind at all he would never find out.

"Ma'am?" the receptionist said, pulling my attention away from the actor.

I looked at her. She was a red head who had a name tag that said Rhonda on it that was slightly crooked. "Yes?"

"Sign these papers and the doctor will be with you in a few minutes."

"Really? But what about----"I gestured to Paul, who seemed completely oblivious to his current surroundings.

Rhonda peered around at him and rolled her eyes. "Don't mind him. He'll go away soon because he doesn't have an appointment!"

Paul started at her voice. "Love you too, Rhonda."

"You're supposed to call, you know," she chastised, "she's told you to call a thousand times."

"I like the element of surprise," he told her.

"Yes well, I like appointments. The last time that you dropped by' we were locked in here for six hours because the paparazzi came and by the time I got home, my dog had peed on everything," Rhonda said.

"And I offered to pay the cleaning bill," he reminded her, "you yelled at me instead."

"My ways more fun," she replied with a smile, "it makes you feel bad. Anyway, have a seat honey. The doc will be with you in a few."

"Right," I said. I swallowed, and turned to look back at the waiting room. It was my worst fear come to life. How many nightmares had I had about this very moment? Running into the guy whose life I had ruined by accident? Besides Paul, there was no one else there. Like someone had put me directly in his path. A few words, and I could change everything. Lessen the guilt that had been eating at me for so long. But it seemed wrong somehow to take a seat right next to him. So, I went for the one directly across. Or was about to when he said, "I don't bite you know."

I couldn't help it though. I peered at him. He was ridiculously good looking and it was as if there was a magnetic force that pulled my head his way. He sat up straighter and smiled. "C'mon. It'll be fun. We'll give the doc a good scare. Don't you want to give the Doc a good scare?"

"Well, um. I don't know the Doc. So."

"So, c'mon." He patted the arm rest of the empty seat next to him.

I smiled hesitantly, and took it. He smelled strongly of cigarettes, and there was sand on his shirt.

He pushed his sunglasses up somehow not messing up a single hair on his head. "What's your name?" he asked.

"Laurel," I whispered.

"Well Laurel, I'm Paul," he held out his hand.

I took it. It was strong, and soft, tattooed with stars on the top. "I know," I murmured, focusing on the carpet in front of me.

"Yeah well, it feels weird if I don't say it," he confessed. He took me in as if searching for some detail he hadn't found yet. Did he recognize me? No. He couldn't have. There was no way he remembered anything from about that night. "You look young. How old are you?"

"Twenty," I said.

"Not old enough to drink but legal. Well---"

"Don't," Rhonda objected.

"No one asked you, Rhonda," said Paul, pointedly staring at me as he spoke with an amused look on his face.

My stomach squirmed as if there was a leviathan inside, trying to crawl its way out. Did he know me? Did he? And how was it possible I had gotten placed at a doctor who knew him?

Someone really, really, hated me. God damn universe.

"Who said anything about asking? I'm telling."

The door to the doctor's swung open. Standing there was a skinny, brunette woman wearing glasses with her hair pulled back in a braid. "Laurel Fleming?" she asked, looking up from the clip board in her hands.

"Hey, sis," said Paul casually, looking over at his shoulder.

My therapist, Doctor Stevens, stared up at Paul in shock. "Shit."

Doctor Stevens had said the exact words that I had been thinking. My mother had picked the very last doctor's office I needed to be in for recovery. I was screwed, with no way of getting out of it unless I confessed everything. Something I could never do.

"Nice to see you too, Elle," he said with a smile.

"Brother, what the hell are you doing here? We talked about this! You're supposed to make an appointment before you come." She put her hands on her hips, fury dancing in her eyes, and I thought maybe she'd slap him. Or at least I'd get out of therapy, which would have solved my problem.

Of course, nothing was ever that easy. Why would it? I didn't deserve easy after everything I'd done.

"You were supposed to pick me up," Paul said, "you know, the airport?"

Elle gasped. "Shit. Fuck. Jesus, Paul, you got out of there today didn't you?"

He nodded. "I'm clean as a whistle and everything. It's okay. I called an Uber. Might have freaked the driver out of their fucking mind, but you know. I came by to make sure everything was okay."

"God, Paul. I'm sorry. I completely forgot. Look, I'll make it up to you----"

"What about lunch?" he suggested.

"It's past lunch," said Elle, "and I have a client."

"I can wait," he said, "or she can come with. I don't mind. Laurel here seems like pretty decent company."

It was my worst nightmare come to life. "Oh, no. I don't know that that is a good idea."

Elle sighed. "Laurel's a patient who I have an appointment with."

I cleared my throat. "Yeah, I really don't know that I could talk about my problems when I'm trying to adjust to the fact that my therapists brother is Paul Berkeley." It wasn't a complete lie. That knowledge was a bit of a truth bomb. But the reality of the situation was far, far worse and I would never get out of there if I admitted it. So, I was going with the flow. Anything to get the hell away.

She frowned. "I guess you're right. This is going to make things difficult, isn't it?"

I nodded. "A little bit."

"Would your mother kill me if I re-scheduled on you?" Elle asked.

"Probably," I said, "she's been known to kick kitchen staff for less. But I think I could convince her to understand. She knows how difficult family can be."

"C'mon Elle," said Paul, "what's the big deal? Bring her with us."

Elle sucked in a breath. "Okay. To lunch it is." She glanced at Rhonda. "Rhonda, do you want anything?"

"Right then. Let me grab my things." Doctor Berkley went back into her office to get her purse and keys, leaving me alone with Paul. I felt like I was going to be sick. But it wouldn't seem normal if I didn't want to have lunch with them. After all, Paul was one of the most famous men on the planet and I was basically living the dream of every girl my age. It was one lunch.

What was the harm?

After, I could always lie to my Mom and say that Doctor Stevens was too much of a hippy or something. That would appall her and then I'd get a new therapist. Problem solved.

Still, Paul kept on smiling. It seemed polite, but somehow to me it felt almost sinister.

I tried to look away but my eyes kept on focusing on his face. It was easy to tell how someone like him had become famous. He radiated pure magnetism, and once you were around him, you couldn't stop staring. Or maybe it was me and the unsettling situation.

That and the fact that he was fucking beautiful. He had long lashes, high cheek bones, and the most stunning blue eyes I'd ever seen. He was art. The worst part was, he knew it too. As I sat there staring at him, he stared back and I felt a desperate want coursing through me. I crossed my legs, saw his eyes flicker to them, and watched as he licked his lips.

Fuck.

It was wrong. I couldn't think this way about someone whose past I had destroyed. But kept on staring at me and I knew exactly what he was thinking. The tension between us seemed almost a living, breathing, thing. As if the universe needed to shatter it before it became unbearable, the door to Elle's office opened revealing the frazzled looking therapist.

"Alright," said Elle, "what do you feel like?"

I felt like letting the floor swallow me up, but that wasn't possible.

"Scotch on the rocks with a twist," Paul joked.

She narrowed her eyes. "Paul."

He snickered. "Relax, little sister. I'm dry as a well in a desert. I haven't had a drop. Even on the plane and I hate planes. I would have liked to have been drunk. Fucked the flight attendant instead. Great energy release."

Elle made a noise of disgust. "You're gross."

"And you're a prude," he shot back, "really, though, how about the usual place?"

"Alright. Sounds good to me. C'mon Laurel, I'm buying."

Paul got up from his seat and waved at Rhonda. "Bye, Rhonda."

"Uh huh," Rhonda replied, her attention focused on the computer screen in front of her.

The three of us left the office, taking Doctor Steven's flashy, new Cadillac. The absence of Paul's car reminded me of the one he had driven that awful night. A vintage, black muscle car that had been smashed to smithereens. Because of me, and my stupid move.

Paul took the front seat, and I took the back. "So, here's what I don't get," I said as we pulled out onto the road, "how did two siblings choose completely different paths? And why doesn't your name say Berkeley on the sign?"

Elle glanced at me in the rearview mirror. "Oh, that's easy really. We've got two different parents. Paul's Mom is my step mom. She's an actress, and Paul followed in her footsteps. My Mom was a teacher."

"And what about your Dad?" I asked. I knew that answer. I knew everything about them. But I had to at least pretend that I didn't if I didn't want them to be suspicious.

The two siblings shot each other a look, having an entire conversation without words. I felt envious of them. I was an only child, and had never had anyone that I could share things with. The loneliness had about driven me crazy. Literally. I hadn't been going to Doctor Steven's office for fun, obviously.

"Dad's a director," said Paul, "or he was."

"Brother!" Elle hissed.

"What?" he ran his hands through his brown hair. "I didn't say which director, did I?"

"Look, as long as he's not Woody Allen, it's okay," I joked.

Elle laughed. "No. He's not Woody Allen, thank god. Dad's Elias Berkshire."

I cleared my throat. "Isn't he the one that---"

"Died last year?" said Paul. "Yeah. That's the one. Overdose. After some money trouble."

"Dad was complicated," Elle explained, "we both changed our last name to distance ourselves from him. Not because of the overdose, but because of other things."

"Oh," I said, "I'm sorry."

"It's fine," Paul said, "Hollywood, right? Can't be a genius without being a little fucking crazy."

"You'd know," Elle told him.

Paul chuckled. "Are you calling me a genius?"

She groaned. "God, no. But I am calling you crazy."

I laughed, and the sound startled me. It was the first time in months that I had actually done it. "You're both great," I said. They were so easy going that I wondered if they might forgive me if I told them the truth. And then, with everything out in the open, I could return to normal. Or try to.

"Thanks," they chorused.

When the two had talked about lunch, I expected some place fancy and over the top with a line of paparazzi waiting outside. Maybe white linen table cloths. Instead, what I got was a beach parking lot and a taco truck.

"This is where we're eating?" I asked.

"Best place in town," Paul answered, "and the cheapest."

"If you say so."

The three of us got out from the car. Elle and I ordered two soft shell tacos with cokes, while Paul got four and some sort of Kale smoothie monstrosity. "Tastes like shit," he said as he sipped from it.

"I don't know why you drink those things," Elle said, "you hate them."

"I've got to get in shape," he explained, "new film and all of that."

"Right, right," said Elle, "tell me that you aren't filming with Angelica again. I don't think I can take another break up between you two."

"Angelica Bane?" I squeaked. "She's amazing."

Paul coughed. "She's a raging bitch. And my ex. But yeah, hell of a talented actress." He sipped his smoothie angrily.

"Paul. Tell me you aren't filming with her," Elle said sternly.

He kept on sipping his drink, until there was nothing on the bottom. "No. I'm not filming with her. But she did call. She wants to get together."

"Oh, c'mon. She always does this. You break up. You get back together. And then you crash and burn. Please don't make me go through you crashing and burning again."

"Don't worry, we're done," he said. He crossed the parking lot to the nearby trashcan, throwing away his cup. For a moment, he stared off at the ocean before sighing and returning to us.

Elle opened her mouth but closed it quickly. Silence lapsed between us all, and the only sound was the cawing of the seagulls flying overhead.

"So, what's the new movie?" I asked.

"Action film," he said with a grin, "it should be great. It's a different roll for me after all of those shitty romances."

"Hey, I liked those shitty romances," I said.

He chuckled. "Well, at least someone did."

Elle crushed her coke can in her hands and waded up the napkins she'd been using to keep her taco in. "Everybody's got to start somewhere," Elle reminded him, "anyway, anything's better than that awful teen show you did for six episodes."

Paul snorted. "Hell, I'd forgotten about that. Why'd you have to bring it up?"

"Because I'm never, ever going to let you forget The Fae King."

"The Fae King?" I raised an eyebrow. "What on earth is that?"

Elle shoved her napkin in her pocket. "Only the best thing ever. It was a young adult novel that was super popular for about a hot minute in the publishing world. They thought it was going to be like Twilight level big, so they invested all of this money into a television show. But the show did one thing wrong."

"What was that?"

Paul winced. "I had to sing."

"You sing?" I gaped at him.

"Not well," he said. "And it showed."

"Wait, do you have record of this show? Because it sounds brilliant," I said.

He sighed. "You want to watch it?"

"Yes please!"

Paul shook his head. "Okay. There's only one catch."

"What's that?" I asked.

"Don't do it," Elle said, shaking her head vehemently.

"I need a driver for a month," he said, "I'll even pay you."

"Paul, she's my patient. I'm not sure that's entirely appropriate."

"Well, do you want to drive me around everywhere for a month?" he asked.

She pursed her lips. "No."

"I don't think so." He waved her off. "Anyway, Laurel here seems like a good egg and this way she can report back to you on everything. That's what you were planning on having my driver do anyway, right? At least this way I'll have someone that seems mildly interesting."

"How do you know that I'm mildly interesting?" I asked.

"Well, you're seeing my sister for therapy, aren't you?" he returned.

"Yes."

"So, you've got to be interesting." He grinned wickedly. "I bet you've got all sorts of secrets up your sleeve."

"Paul."

"Elle."

Brother and sister glared at each other in a silent stand-off. The deciding factor was me. Going back to school wasn't an option after everything that had happened, and at least working for Paul would give me an excuse to get out of the house. "I'll do it," I said, "it's not a problem. I don't have anything else to do anyway."

Besides, this could be my penance. Not that I would tell them that.

"What about your Mother?" Elle asked, with a raised eyebrow.

"Leave that to me," Paul said with a smirk, and I knew that there'd be no problem. The only question would be who would eat who alive first. Paul, or my mother.

"This better not interfere with her sessions," Elle warned, "Laurel came to me for help. She doesn't need you screwing that up."

"Don't worry, little sister. I'll be on my best behavior." He wrapped his arms around her shoulders. "Now c'mon, we'd better get back. Oh, and don't forget Rhonda's coffee. She might kill you if you don't have it."

"Shit," Elle muttered.

I laughed again, delighting in the novelty of it. Me, laughing. Me, feeling happy. I hadn't had that feeling in so long. I should have felt guilty but I wanted to bask in their perfect world a little more.

We drove back to the office, pausing only at a Starbucks to get Rhonda her drink. In the back of Doctor Stevens car, with the sun on my face, I had almost forgotten the reason for the whole afternoon in the first place.

That was until we got back to the office, and my mother was there, waiting for me.

Dressed in a pink business suit, her blond hair perfectly styled, and wearing pearls around her neck despite its being noon she was every inch the rich bitch nightmare. Mom had married young to my Dad, who kept her in the lifestyle of private airplanes and country clubs that she so loved. Even amidst the scandal, she'd managed to maintain our finances and perfect hair. She had come from a poor family, and she strove to keep us from ending up the same way.

And by strove, I mean she demanded the best from me and made sure I gave the best. So of course, it was killing her that I was in therapy. I had gone off her path for me. It had been as good as slapping her in the face.

When I got home after Christmas break, and told Mom what I wanted to do, the only thing she said was, "I'm calling you a therapist."

So, I wound up in Doctor Stevens's office on what was the craziest day of my life since I'd "gone crazy" myself.

"Doctor Stevens," my mother shot Elle a cold look, and I felt terrible for her. I had been on the receiving end of those. They weren't fun.

"Mrs. Fleming!" Doctor Stevens said brightly as she quickly handed Rhonda her iced coffee.

"Doctor Stevens, would you mind telling me exactly why you took my daughter out on a little joy ride with this....this..."

Paul stepped forward. "It was my fault, Mrs. Fleming. Don't get mad at her."

My mother looked him up and down as if he were a gutter rat. "After everything you did to my family, you dare to talk to me?"

I winced. Paul's accident had happened the same night my father had almost been arrested before he fled for Mexico. Of course he was the last person my mother wanted to see.

"I'm really sorry, ma'am. It wasn't part of the plan. I know. Don't blame Elle for this."

Plan? He must have meant interfering with my session. Whatever the case, his words didn't stop Mom from seething at him.

"I fainted!" I blurted.

Elle looked startled, and Paul amused.

Mom's hard gaze refocused on me. "You fainted?"

"Yeah, I fainted. I was so stressed about coming here, and Doctor Stevens thought I could use some food so she took me out to eat. That was the reason we left the office."

"With Mr. Berkeley?" Mom said, once again looking at Paul with disdain.

"That was my fault, Mrs. Fleming," Paul lied, "I wanted to make sure she was okay. Please don't blame Elle for any of this. My sister really is an excellent therapist, and I believe that she can help your daughter if you let her."

Elle smiled at my mother, and for a moment, no one said a word as my mother searched Elle's face for some sign of weakness. When she found none, she nodded. "Fine. I'll give it a second chance. But the next time my daughter faints, for heaven's sake don't take her out to lunch. Take her to a hospital! You would think a doctor would know that."

"Yes ma'am. I look forward to seeing Laurel next week, ma'am," Doctor Stevens said.

"Don't forget our deal," Paul said with a wink.

"Your deal?" Mom said with alarm in her voice.

"Paul wants me to be his driver for a month," I explained, "I figured since I don't have anything to do it would be good for me."

"Driver?" said Mom. She placed a hand on my shoulder. "Honey, you are in no state to be driving. After everything that's happened with you the last place I want is to have you behind the wheel."

"It wouldn't be long trips or anything," Paul said, "to work, and helping me do my errands. That sort of thing."

"My daughter isn't a butler," Mom snapped, "I'm afraid I'll have to decline. Thank you very much for the offer, Mr. Berkley, but no thank you. I know the kind of world you live in. Evidence of that was smashed in front of my house not so long ago. Don't think I've forgotten despite everything. Now if you excuse me, I'll be taking my daughter home."

She ushered me out of the office, into the parking lot, letting the door slam behind her. "Honestly! How completely irresponsible, not to mention unprofessional. I don't care if that young man is a movie star she shouldn't have taken you out of the office. I paid for a therapy session, not to have her take you out gallivanting around. She should be fixing you, not making things worse. I am sorry, Laurel. Of course, we'll get someone else right away."

"Mom, there's nothing to fix," I insisted.

She rolled her eyes at me. "Honey, don't you think it will be awkward? After everything that happened..."

I winced. "It's not a problem," I lied, "besides....I....I like them."

"Alright," she said reluctantly, "but if I don't see an improvement you will be switching! And you can't fool me, Laurel. I know something happened that you aren't telling me. If there was nothing to fix, you wouldn't have left school."

I frowned. "Lots of kids leave school, Mom. I'm trying to find myself. It's perfectly normal."

Mom sighed. "I don't want to argue about this right now. Get in the car."

Reluctantly, I got into our black BMW, with Mom getting in right after me. She rambled the whole way home about Doctor Berkley's unprofessionalism and as she did all I could think about was Paul. I had grown up around the rich and famous. But Paul was different.

He was different because he was someone I actually liked and he'd made me feel important. Important in a way that I hadn't felt in ages. I wanted to see him again, but if he hadn't already forgotten about me I would be very, very surprised. Yet somehow, some small part of me felt that maybe if I could befriend him I could make up for everything I'd messed up.

"Are you even listening to me?" My mother asked as we finally pulled up the driveway to our large, two story home.

"What?" I asked.

Mom sighed. "Honestly, I might as well be talking to a wall for all of the reaction that I get out of you. I said I don't want you hanging around that man again. Do you understand me? I know their type. He'll think that you're entertaining for about five minutes, and then drop you. Besides that accident he got into in front of our house shows exactly how little he cares. That's the last thing you need right now, Laurel. You've got to take care of your health so you can get back on track. Do you understand me?"

"And how should I do that mom? Because people have a tendency to be disappointing. I can't stop interacting with them because they might break me. I can fix myself."

"Then show me!" my mother insisted. "Show me the driven girl that you used to be. Not this stranger that I don't know."

"I'm not going back to school," I told her.

"This isn't about school," said Mom, "I want you to show an interest in something. You've walked around this house like a zombie for months. I want my daughter back, honey."

"I'm right here," I insisted, "I haven't gone anywhere."

"Yes you have," she said, "You are almost as much of a ghost as your father."

I got out of the car, slamming the door behind me and stomping into the house. Let her think what she wanted. I knew what I felt.
