Since Kyoya Ootori technically satisfies the criteria of "having a tight relationship with capitalism" and resembles Pantalone in general, I immediately thought of him as your top guy. Ouran’s a semi-older series with an anime adaptation, but the manga is finished and the fandom is inactive; since it ended in 2010ish

you're not there, but you're actually kinda close! my top guy has a similar color scheme, even if i do prefer my dudes more bizarre and off-putting than anyone ohshc has to offer and more incompetent at basic household chores than i choose to believe kyoya in-specific is (cannot say the same about tamaki, unfortunately). think kyoya if kyoya was, like, evil and didn't know how to change a lightbulb. that's a big part of the appeal, for me.

finally got around to reading Romantic Killer and have thoughts

saw the trailer on Netflix and figured the manga would be better, so I spent last night reading a bunch of chapters. i like it overall and will try to finish it tonight, but there are some.....issues.

(if you read til the end there’s some recommendations too :3 )

1 the pacing is bad sometimes. like, REALLY bad

nearly two volumes are spent on Anzu and Kazuki exclusively. you’re emotionally invested in them as a couple, the end game is in sight. and just when the plot is entering the “obsessed fangirls find out about their relationship” arc....it’s dropped. they pick THAT moment to introduce a new guy. and not even one that makes sense, like a friend of Kazuki or another student - they go for the “childhood friend” route that’s canonically ripped out of their ass. its insanely disruptive to the story and almost caused me to drop it then & there.

2 if you think about it longer than 10 seconds, it becomes a horror manga

Riri the fairy is genuinely the most evil mascot character since Kyuubei. their antics very quickly stop being funny and start veering into “objectively horrifying”. we have total mind control, brainwashing, driving people into homelessness, and eventually just forcing hot guys to fall in love with Anzu. lives are either up-ended or destroyed, and Riri doesn’t even try to hide the fact that this is for purely personal gain.

3 the root cause of Anzu’s problems is never talked about

i went into this mostly on the curiosity of why Anzu was so against getting a boyfriend. maybe she’d gotten hurt in the past, or her resistance was a mask for low self-esteem? nah, turns out she’s just lazy. Anzu is addicted to sources of instant gratification (video games, junk food, pets) and has no interest in a boyfriend purely because social relationships take work.

in the long run Riri is right to stage an intervention...but it’s undermined by all this romance cliche bullshit. it would’ve been easier (and more impactful to the audience because, let’s be honest, a LOT of us here are Anzu) if they’d just called Anzu out on what a spoiled and lazy brat she is and say they’re doing this before she ruins her own life.

4 its a satire of shoujo romance tropes...but makes fun of the outdated ones while being unironically full of the current ones

this takes decent amount of knowledge of manga history to notice. a lot of the tropes Riri is trying to pull off were common in manga from the 20th century. those were the days of the skinny, princess-like manga heroine who falls for the manly hero who protects her from danger (even when she has g-d superpowers and he doesn’t). a good example would be Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask. but, starting in the early 2000s, manga heroines started getting more realistic - more tomboyish, average looks, and simply more independent in general. this describes Romantic Killer to a T.

everything that’s supposed to make Anzu an “anti-shoujo” MC...i’ve seen MCs do in other shoujo. none of them super recent either. in fact, her whole character could accurately be described as just a spicier version of Haruhi Fujioka from OHSHC.

as i mentioned i’m not saying Romantic Killer is bad, it’s just Not Perfect. even with the above issues, it’s still a solid read. other titles you may also enjoy would be Ouran High School Host Club, FIVE, Boku no Orion, and Skip Beat.

I've mentioned before about the one comment I got on a fic where they basically just said "this is incredibly unrealistic"

It was a Tamaki x Kyoya OHSHC fic where adult Haruhi and Tamaki realize that hey we work better as friends and we love each other just not in that way and that they still have feelings for old highschool flames so they decide to divorce(I've never finished the manga but I know how it ends)

And I think about that comment from time to time like what did you expect you clicked on it knowing roughly what went down. That and I wrote it at like 15/16.

But now almost 10 years later I realize no it actually isn't all that unrealistic. People can get married realize that no they don't love each other that way or that they're better as friends. People can divorce for many reasons just like how people can get married for many reasons.

It's probably because divorce has such negative connotations that people forget that couples can seperate for non negative reasons and that people can fall out of love.

That was also the only comment on that site that I did not ask for. Any other comments I got on other fics was because I asked hey are you guys enjoying this???

So I know FMA and Black Butler are manga women have written... what other ones are there? In your recent post I saw you have another favourite manga made by women excluding FMA, what is it?

I personally enjoy reading female authors depending on the story. Of course I can’t speak for them all, but I notice they don’t over-sexualize characters, even the men in their stories. Not saying it’s all male authors who do this, but they seem to over-sexualize characters more in their stories then women? What always gets me is when men say they don’t know how to write women but yet some women do it so easily... I feel men overthink it. We are opposite genders, not an alien species 👽 Like, just write a character and just label it a women?

Gonna answer all of these together.

First anon-yeah, idk dude like just create a human being and make them a woman. I’m not a writer tbh so I can’t say much more than that—but that seems pretty simple enough. I’m gandering that he just has no interest in incorporating female characters into his story unless it’s to draw them super sexualized in a very detailed way—because he sure as hell puts a lot of detail into it when he does this 🙄🙄🙄 I haven’t really made much commentary on this issue of his because it’s just...A Thing™️ that happens in manga and it is definitely NOT okay, and if we all really wanted go into it-our conversation could last for days about women in general being over sexualized in manga, and also just not being written into the story properly or utilized as an actual character—BNHA is absolutely not the only manga with this issue. I’m not excusing Horikoshi by any means but I’m just almost desensitized to it at this point. Isn’t that sad? Anyway.

So FMA is written by Hiromu Arakawa. Surprise surprise—FMA is one of the greatest stories of all time—in art, story telling, characters, and most importantly (to me) the ending is fuckin STELLAR. I say it a lot—top tier ending. I really hope we get one like that for BNHA.

In that particular post I mentioned my two fav manga of all time but I’ll list a couple more because they’re also written by women—but they’re Shojo so they may not be up you guys’ alley.

Fullmetal Alchemist is my top favorite manga of all time. I read that story in middle school—I didn’t leave my couch for three days and I was up all hours of the night because I couldn’t put my laptop down. And the anime FMAB is amazing also. At least once a year I get in a mood where I need familiarity and I just rewatch FMAB from beginning to end and I fall into the rabbit hole again for several months lol. It just has a very special place in my heart and it will never be replaced. This last panel reduced my 12 year old little to tears.

My second favorite of all time may end up getting replaced by BNHA depending on how it ends—but as of right now it’s still D. Gray-Man. D. Gray-Man is written by Katsura Hoshino (who I recently found out has the same birthday as me 🤭)

D. Gray-Man is still ongoing and it’s coming out on a quarterly basis due to the mangaka’s carpal tunnel. I started this one in high school it was my hyperfixation pretty much all throughout—but due to her health the chapters started slowing down and then eventually went on a very long hiatus. But now they’re coming out regularly—just sparingly. But D. Gray-Man is a very VERY good story—like breathtakingly so. It’s been ongoing since 2004. Almost 20 years and I’m still following it—and I’m gonna see it through til the end even though I’ll probably be like 30 lol. Possibly older. I recommend it but just know the chapters are currently coming out slowly. But Hoshino’s are is just—

Her artistic talent is unreal. Her coloring style HEAVILY influenced mine. The coloring style is very present in my current drawings. And Arakawa’s drawing style influenced mine as well.

I have a very very deep love for both of these stories. You have no idea.

Ahhh two more manga that were written by women but also are shojo so it’s not quite the same:

Fruits Basket and Ouran High School Host Club

Fruits Basket is good—I’d recommend it highly. They also are about to finish the anime remake that I’ve been wanting for over a decade. Written by Natsuki Takaya

OHSHC is definitely not for everybody. It’s very slice of life kind of? It’s a love story. The most interesting part about it are the two main characters—the love interests. Everything else about it is just fun light hearted stuff—no high stakes or anything. There is a climactic moment but it’s not life or death or anything lol. I recommend this if you’re just bored and need a fun read. I re-read it like once a year also because sometimes I just want a good love story—and this one is it. So is Fruits Basket. OHSHC is written by Bisco Hatori.

Also—thank you for reminding me that I need to get into black butler. I watched it but I always prefer the manga so I need to get into that one. Also another story by Hiromu Arakawa is Silver Spoon. I watched the anime and it was good so I’m gonna read it to get the full story. It’s not high stakes either so it’s more of a breather story but it was still enough for me to binge watch the anime. So yeah—those are my two favs of all time—written by ladies. Thanks for letting me ramble about my favorite things guys!

If you can go outside, what do you like to do during this time? - The governor of my state just closed all of the parks, but I really enjoyed hiking by myself. Now, I kinda just sit in my car in the driveway and enjoy the music with the windows down haha

Any fascinating concept you’re studying? - I’ve been hooked onto learning about volleyball, witchcraft, baking/cooking, and embroidery because of tiktok lol

What kinds of acts of creativity/forms of art are you currently doing? - I’ve been redecorating my room with photo collages, and I also put together a photo album documenting the past year leading up to the quarantine.

A song/s that resonates with your state of mind at the moment? - I’m not sure if a particular song “resonates” with me at the moment, but I enjoy listening to fun songs that include Witchy Woman, Nice Guy, When Will I See You Again (okay maybe I relate to this specific song’s name), and Homage.

Favorite impulsive/‘bad’ coping technique - I dyed my hair even though it’s a ‘bad’ coping technique and I actually really liked the results! I’m using semi-permanent dyes so I can try out different colors over time without completely wrecking/bleaching my hair. It’s the first time I’ve completely dyed my hair besides highlights so seeing such a drastic change was refreshing

Favorite healthy/‘good’ coping technique - Does cooking count? I like making meals and treats for my family whenever I’m feeling up to it. I’ve also been tidying up my room which has made me a bit happier in these rough times.

I was so angry with that show, because it had so much potential but I couldn't bear it.

Also, if anyone writes Ouran AU for Ateez I will die, OHSHC and Fruits Basket were the first mangas I've ever read. 😭

Kuragehime i read the manga and couldn’t get enough of it so i watched this... there’s not a lot of romance... but it’s adorable

Introduction

I’m a 16 yr old high school student here in the Philippines. I had huge interest when it comes to Kpop, Anime and Games but mainly Anime and Games due to the influence of my guy friends. 

When it comes to my family, I’m the second eldest of the bunch but I feel treated as the youngest hehehehe. 

And also ‘m the constant being called by the Fashion Police because my sense of Fashion is more of a boyish outfit rather than the usual lady like clothes. Since my mother wanted me to dress up more lady like along with my two siblings. 

I’m currently want to be a Pediatrician since I like to help people especially children since they have the potential or the future that is waiting for them to reach it. And not many children could experience the life they wanted due to family issues but mainly health issues and I want at least to help them. 

When it comes to videogames, I’m in between the indie games and the mainstream games like the popular ones. My probably favorite indie game is  Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea (if that’s consider as an indie game) and when it comes to mainstream, 

It’s hard to pick as there are many good (but also sh*tty) games but  I think the Fire Emblem and Pokemon games are my top since these two games made me what I am today.  

I also play some otome games along with visual novels, whether it comes from lemmasoft or not, I still play it as long as the story is interesting and it’s decent like Tokimeki Girl’s version 2 & 3.

Now for the Anime...I’m good with any kind of genre as long as it’s good and the story is interesting like my case with Video games. But primarily I’m a sucker when it comes to reverse harem (Akatsuki no Yona, OHSHC and Magic-kyun~ Are the top! of my list) and Comedy (GINTAMA FTW!! \(^O^)/)

Reading manga isn’t my thing but I personally read it when I don’t have any to do *cough**cough*lie*cough. The only manga that I finish reading is Daytime Shooting star which is recommended by my cousin. But I also read on going series like Gintama, Will Yuki fell into hell(Maid Sama’s creator), Black Butler, Kaben no Reincarnation(recommended by my classmate). 

Lastly KPOP, firstly...How did I get into kpop? The answer to this question is the most common scenario that is known as I-want-to-know-their-names scenario. Because of BAP, they pulled me into the dark side of Kpop aka the bias wrecking, fan wars, and of course the awesome performances along with their merch. I kinda fell out of kpop after a the year I was in due to personal matters but 2015-until now, due to one of my best friends who is wholeheartedly loves Kpop due to Seventeen pulls me in slowly but surely.

I guess that’s all and the reason why I did this introductory post because I want to formally introduce myself into the website
