@spiritualpuzzleshipper messaged me and asked me to answer these questions from the Fanfic Author Ask Meme I reblogged, so here you go!

1. What was your first fic and could you stand to reread it today?

That would be Gambling With Destiny and MY GOSH NO not in its original state! xD I mean, it’s ironic since I’m planning to do a deep edit again, but the 2009 original version of chapters 1-8 were much, much rougher. I tweaked them a lot back in 2015, and I do not regret tossing that first attempt at all.

3. In your opinion, what’s your best fic?

OH MAN… That is tough. I like or dislike different ones for different reasons… I will say I am PROUDEST of GwD in a lot of ways, in terms of story building and just being a STORY, but at the moment I LIKE Reconfiguration best. You know, at the moment.

14. What’s the biggest change in your taste between when you started in fandom and today?

Oh man, I’m not even sure!! A lot, I guess, since it’s been well over a decade since then, depending on where you cut it. I’d say GaiaOnline was my first real taste of fandoms, in the OOC discussions between roleplayers. And… I don’t know, I’ve stuck really heavily to what I like writing-wise, but I suppose I’ve become much more prickly/respectful with characterization. I kind of just rolled with good storytelling and fun scenes back then, but now I find myself thinking, with my own writing and others? “That character wouldn’t do that. They wouldn’t act like this, they wouldn’t say that.” Which has its positives and negatives.

23. What’s the nicest review you’ve ever gotten?

OH MAN… I get so, so many kind reviews. I love pretty much any of them that you could name- The ones that praise the story, or express their emotional reactions? I especially find the ones that ‘yell’ at me for making people feel things both hilarious and flattering. xD But, if I have to pick just ONE… I’m gonna say the review by Kiku on Holiday Earworms, because not only was it the first of the awesome ‘essay’ reviews, it birthed other stories. …seriously, TDWC AND Reconfiguration would not exist without Kiku’s comments on that story. THAT’S how powerful feedback can be. I also want to give an honorable mention to Selene467 on Ao3… for the reviews on GwD, because my gosh… I haven’t even REPLIED to those, yet, but they made me so emotional. The detailed comments and just praise bowled me away. And while it’s not specific published reviews, @katyanoctis and @spiritualpuzzleshipper are such regular behind the scenes support for me right now, you don’t even know. You guys keep me going in ways I could never express.

24. What’s the meanest review you’ve ever gotten? Do you think the reviewer intended it?

Hmm… I could joke and say the one I got about the prophecy in GwD making someone think of Sailor Moon, but more seriously. This is half-review, half-message exchanges, but there is one reader of GwD who was rather… rudely ignorant about asexuality and ace spectrum, and gender stereotyping in the bargain. I say ‘rudely’ because it’s one thing to not understand something, and another thing to respond to explanations with “Oh, I don’t believe in that.” The individual also went on to say that she couldn’t imagine Atem being ace or gray because ‘he’s so attractive’, and when Yuugi/Sawheru’s sexuality was brought up she made some comments along the lines of “Teen boys are just so horny” and responded to my comments with “I have a teenage son, so I would know better than you.” It was… troubling.

26. What aspect of your writing do you most enjoy to see praised?

ALL OF IT- okay, seriously. While I said above what sort of comments I like, I suppose… I love when I manage to make readers feel, and sympathize with my written characters. I know that’s kind of vague, but think about it- writing some words on a page and managing through plot and just wording to make people FEEL what I think the characters are feeling? That’s like writing alchemy. It’s one of the hardest lines to walk, since you can easily fall flat or go over the top or not get across the depth of feeling. But, I LOVE using character emotions and thought processes to back having them do things that do NOT make sense, or a reader would disagree with… but, if you experience the feelings the character does, you can still completely sympathize with them. I… will be relying on that technique a LOT, actually, come things in Reconfiguration 8-12, so I’ll be curious to see if readers think anything is ham fisted or too 'unacceptable’, or if they’ll understand completely why Atem & Yuugi & others do what they do.

31. Who’s the one character you’ve just never managed to get perfectly right?

MALIK. Seriously, Malik Ishtar. Mind you, I think I do OKAY with him, but in my roleplays days, there was this roleplayer, Fetchie? Lovely person, I should get in contact with her again sometime, but anyways- she was the QUEEN at playing Malik Ishtar. I have to say, being exposed to that means that I never include Malik in a story without taking his portrayal very seriously… This is also the origin of my less-talked-about Liberashipping love, by the by. That’s definitely not a LIKELY in canon scenarios ship, but I played Yuugi back in the day, and it just really made me fall in love with the rapport and consider what that dynamic would be… I should write about that sometime.

32. Who’s the one character who shines without you even trying?

Haha, well if the above didn’t give it away? Yuugi. I played a LOT of Yuugis in the late 2000s to early 2010s, and I got pretty adept at it. I think that experience slid pretty smoothly into writing him in fanfics- although I am always discovering new sides of him to portray… especially since I get new material sometimes, like DSoD! I will say, I also roleplayed Jounouchis and Atems and a Yami no Bakura and Isis… but none of them ever came to me as naturally, so I must just be synced to Yuugi better. 

39. Do you consider yourself to have a readership?

Much more than I ever could have foreseen, let me tell you!! Two, no heck, ONE year ago was it? Aside from this one little holiday one shot, I had this one giant complicated fanfic (GwD) that features a really rough start, puzzleshipping without a Yuugi present for the bulk of the story, a girl that on the surface at least seems to be either an OC, or a Fem!Yuugi, and sibling incest for the main couple… I kind of accepted that I was going to get a niche following, if anything. Now that story has over 150 kudos on Ao3, and I have expanded my stories to include a now wrapped up fic series, a SECOND long puzzleshipping story, plus two Non-YGO works… and that second puzzleshipping story is 166 kudos and counting. I don’t quite believe it most days. I don’t know how many of those are active, still-around readers, but MY GOSH do my reviewers overwhelm me. So I dunno what most people would call a readership, but for me, this is above and beyond what I could ever hope for.
