‘It’s dangerous work’: new generation of Indigenous activists battle to save the Amazon
Campaigners in Brazil use drones to document work of self-defence teams trying to stop environmental destruction caused by illegal mining
The medicine man flashed a mischievous grin as he dabbed his warriors’ eyeballs with a feather soaked in malagueta pepper and watched them grimace in pain. They’re going into battle and this will protect them,” José Delfonso Pereira said as he advanced on his next target with a jam jar of his chilli potion.
“It hurts and it burns,” the Macuxi shaman admitted. “But it will help them see more clearly and stop them falling ill.”
It was a crisp August morning and a dozen members of an Indigenous self-defence team had assembled in the hillside village of Tabatinga to receive Pereira’s blessing before launching their latest mission into one of the Amazon’s most secluded corners, near Brazil’s border with Guyana and Venezuela.
Some of the men clutched bloodwood truncheons as they prepared to journey down the Maú River in search of illegal miners; others held bows and arrows adorned with the black feathers of curassow birds. Marco Antônio Silva Batista carried a drone.
“If I die, it will be for a good cause – ensuring our territory is preserved for future generations,” said the 20-year-old activist-journalist, whose ability to spy on environmental criminals from above has made him a key member of GPVTI, an Indigenous patrol group in the Brazilian state of Roraima.
Batista, who belongs to South America’s Macuxi people, is part of a new generation of Indigenous journalists helping chronicle an age-old battle against outside aggression. For centuries, non-Indigenous writers and reporters have flocked to the rainforest region to tell their version of that ancestral fight for survival. Now, a growing cohort of Indigenous communicators are telling their own stories, providing first-hand dispatches from some of the Amazon’s most inaccessible and under-reported corners.
“It’s dangerous work and we suffer a lot when we’re out in the field,” said Batista, one of about 26,000 inhabitants of Raposa Serra do Sol, Brazil’s second most populous Indigenous territory. “But it really gives me strength because I’m showing the reality of our lives to the world.”

Ukraine is now calling for THAAD air defense system, F-18 fighters, MQ-9 drones and helicopters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/07/2023 - 17:40in Military, War Zones
The latest list of U.S. weapons that Ukraine says it needs to fight the Russian military includes sophisticated air defense systems, F-18 "Hornet" fighters, drones, Apache and Blackhawk helicopters, according to documents seen by Reuters.
Officials from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense presented a “arms list to meet the needs of Ukraine's defense forces” during a closed-door session of a conference in Washington on Wednesday, with the presence of government officials and defense industry executives.
The comprehensive list included weapons that Ukraine already has in stock, such as Abrams tanks and 155-millimeter artillery, as well as some weaponry, as well as F-16 fighters, drones and long-range ATACMS missiles that it has requested in the past.
But the list has some surprises, including expensive items such as C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft manufactured by Boeing and the C-130 Super Hercules manufactured by Lockheed Martin. Boeing's Apache attack helicopters entered the list, as did the Black Hawk helicopter manufactured by Lockheed Martin's Sikorsky unit.
THAAD system being disembarked from a C-17.
But the Ukrainians didn't stop there. The documents show that Ukraine is also looking for F-18 Hornet fighters, three types of drones manufactured by General Atomics, including the MQ-9B Sky Guardian and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) air defense system manufactured by Lockheed.
Ukrainians know that they must guarantee Western military aid to continue the fight.
Legislation that would provide billions of dollars in new security assistance for Ukraine and Israel was blocked in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, as Republicans pressed their demands for tougher measures to control immigration on the U.S.-Mexico border.
U.S. President Joe Biden made the Ukrainian victory a foreign policy goal while campaigning for re-election in November 2024.
Ukraine's list reflects what would easily be equivalent to billions of dollars in arms purchases or donations.

Love Over Anger Music is making waves with their latest EP: “Pure Heart”
March 2023: Love Over Anger Music managed to make a mark with a distinctive sound. The band’s sound is a blend of various influences, channeling the energy of classic rock with the unique twist of alternative music.
The group’s most recent studio effort, “Pure Heart,” stands out as a fantastic example of their artistry and flow, giving the audience a strong sense of natural character and edgy musicianship that feels spontaneous and natural yet balanced and creatively thoughtful. The EP features six songs. The song “Life as a Cartoon” is the perfect opener. The song’s unique ¾ tempo pairs beautifully with the guitar tone. The slide lead is excellent, and the mix’s sound has a unique flow that blurs the lines between old-school vibes and modern rock melodies. The second song is titled “Here’s One for the Drummer.” As the title might suggest, this song must be a blast to play on drums! It features a killer hook and a powerful arrangement. This song is truly outstanding, and after about 1 minute and ten seconds, the vocals chime in, taking the song to a whole new level. The third song on this EP is titled “Lizard Brain.” The intro offers a combination of piano and clean electric guitar. The vocals are beautiful and melodic, sometimes reminiscent of artists as diverse as The Kinks, Damien Rice, or Pink Floyd. The first remixed track is titled “New Beginning (Ukraine Remix). The sound has a lush, dreamy quality. This is one of the most emotional moments on the EP. The fifth song on this release is titled “Off the Grid (Guyana Remix) and is another beautiful ballad with a warm and relatable sound. The guitar and piano interact beautifully, and the vocals are incredibly powerful and personal, with a Cat Stevens vibe. Last but not least, the EP comes to a close with its sixth song, “Ghosts?”
This is an amazing conclusion to a beautiful and charming EP. The song brings back a very uplifting and happy vibe with a super energetic and fun arrangement!
Ultimately, fans of artists such as Mazzy Star, Queen, Monsters of Folk, and Led Zeppelin will most definitely enjoy this particular release.
The sound of the EP has a truly organic quality, making it incredibly powerful. Too many bands and artists rely heavily on studio processing and other trickery to alter performance to a point where they might risk losing the magic of the human component that drives the sound. However, this record has a natural and organic sound, reminding me of some of the best rock-inspired past works. The sound blurs the lines between retro rock aesthetics and the modern scene, making for a very diverse and refreshingly powerful sound. The overall vibe of the production is truly great!

Until the early 2010s, discussions over peak oil generally exclusively referred to concerns over peak oil production: the point at which crude oil reaches its maximum production capacity, followed by an irreversible decline.
This was a worrying concept for energy experts seeing a rising global dependence on oil, and there's no shortage of predictions of sometimes imminent arrival of peak oil production that haven't come to pass. One big reason the world hasn't reached this peak in recent years is the advent of unconventional oil sources such as shale oil and tar sands, combined with discoveries of large conventional oil fields in countries such as Guyana, Namibia and Brazil.
"There's always been new discoveries or new technologies, new ways of extracting oil," says Krista Halttunen, a research fellow in sustainable finance at the University of Oxford who co-authored a paper last year on peak oil while a PhD researcher at Imperial College London. "So we've never actually reached a peak – oil production capacity has been growing the entire time that we've had oil, really."
As concerns over climate change have grown over the past few decades, however, opinions around fossil fuel extraction have shifted enormously. With coal, oil and gas by far the largest contributors to global climate change, and a host of alternative renewable energy sources waiting at our fingertips, a reduction and phase-out of fossil fuels is seen as an urgent and necessary step.
As the world has begun to make efforts to move away from fossil fuels, a new concept of peak fossil fuels has emerged: that we will hopefully start cutting our need for them far before we use up all that is possible to extract from the Earth's crust. This is the point the IEA now thinks the world will reach at the end of the 2020s.
A surprise result
The IEA's new projections come from its latest medium-term oil report and are broadly aligned with its "stated policies scenario" (Steps) – a relatively conservative global scenario, which is based on what has already been put in place to achieve climate and other energy goals, rather than assuming all stated goals will be met.
"This is a view of what we think is going to happen based on things that people have said they're going to do or that we're confident are going to happen," says Healy. [...]. "We're doing our best job of trying to say what we think is the likely way things will play out." For oil demand to decline sooner, additional policy measures and behavioural changes would be needed, the IEA notes.
Even tracking the current use of oil is a big job. "There's a big team of statisticians here that do nothing else, essentially," says Healy.
The five-year projection goes up to 2028 – when the IEA thinks the world will be just on the brink of reaching peak oil demand.
The report marks the first time the IEA has found global oil demand will peak in such a short timeframe. "When we ran the model, and there was a peak in it, it was a bit of a surprise," says Healy. "It was clearly a very interesting result."
The key to peaking oil use
To understand what the IEA thinks is now happening with peak oil demand, it's worth considering that the transport sector is by far the biggest consumer of oil: it accounts for around 60% of the 100 million barrels of oil used globally every day. "There's nothing else that takes up as much oil as transport," says Halttunen.
Of that, around 45% of the total, or around 45 million barrels a day, is used in road fuel for vehicles like cars, trucks and vans, says Healy. It's here where sweeping changes are already beginning to curb oil demand.
Two big factors are driving this: the advent of alternative vehicle fuels – especially electric vehicles – and increased vehicle efficiency.
Electric vehicles have been a huge success story, says Healy, and are already having an impact on gasoline demand – especially in China, Europe and North America. Globally, 14% of all new cars sold in 2022 were electric, up from 9% in 2021 and less than 5% in 2020.
"We expect that to continue to have a really big impact, as more and more electric vehicles are sold and displace the use of internal combustion engines in the fleet," says Healy.

Website Development Myths
6 Website Development Myths Debunked
A website is a powerful digital asset businesses need to strengthen their presence in the online world. It helps businesses share valuable information with their target audiences about the business and its products and services, essential for gaining customer trust and for brand development. However, many businesses fall prey to website development related misinformation which can stop them from taking important website design and development decisions, impeding their growth. Let's debunk some of these myths
1: “If I build it, visitors will come.”
Truth - Building a website is just the first step. You need to ensure your website has a sound technical SEO structure and on-page SEO elements with right keywords to improve search engine visibility. Just like a physical store, a website also needs marketing strategies to bring new visitors to the website and an effective content strategy and user experience to convert them into paying customers. Bringing visitors to the website is and on-going effort.
2: “I can do it myself; it’s not rocket science.”
Truth - While it is possible to build a basic website using the tools available in the current web development market, without the expertise of a skilled website development company, it would not be possible to create a professional website supported with the latest web development technologies and design trends to keep up with the increasing online competition in Guyana.
3: “All website development companies are the same.”
Truth - It's important to thoroughly check the credibility of the website design company you choose to partner with. Go through their work portfolio, client testimonials and social media accounts to assess their track record. Make sure they are transparent, collaborative and passionate about exceeding your expectations.
4: “Websites are expensive and time-consuming.”
Truth - A website is an investment that will help you generate leads, boost sales and automate repetitive processes saving you time and money in the long run. With a high-quality website you will minimize downtime and maximize your return.
5: “Once it’s launched, I’m done.”
Truth - The digital landscape continuously evolves and customer preferences change with time. A website needs regular updates and improvements to keep up with these changes and offer quality experience to users.
6: “Mobile-friendliness is just a trend, it doesn’t matter in Guyana.”
Truth - A major chunk of internet traffic these days comes via mobile devices. Ignoring mobile website design and responsive website development can cost you valuable leads and cause loss of business and potential customers. Not optimizing your website for mobile devices will create a bad user experience damaging your online credibility.
A website is accessible to your potential customers from any part of the world and is available 24/7. Having this type of visibility and reach cannot be achieved via traditional marketing means. This makes websites a must-have sales and marketing tool in the current digitally dominated world.

Peter Tatchell Foundation leads protest at Westminster Abbey
The Peter Tatchell Foundation will coordinate protests at Westminster Abbey on Monday against leaders of 30 Commonwealth countries that criminalise LGBT+ people.
The Church of England and UK Government will welcome the homophobes to the Commonwealth’s 75th-anniversary service at Westminster Abbey.
The Peter Tatchell Foundation is coordinating a protest from 12 noon as homophobic leaders arrive. It will include LGBT+ people who have fled victimisation and violence in Commonwealth countries.
Peter Tatchell said the anti-LGBT+ laws in the 30 countries violate the Commonwealth Charter.
As the Commonwealth celebrates, we mourn!
“As the Commonwealth celebrates, we mourn!
“We are calling out the 30 Commonwealth leaders who violate the equality principles of their own constitutions and the Commonwealth Charter. They preside over the state-sanctioned persecution of their LGBT+ citizens.
“Thirty out of 56 Commonwealth countries criminalise homosexuality, mostly under laws imposed by Britain during the nineteenth century when it was the colonial power. Six Commonwealth countries have life imprisonment. Millions of LGBT+ Commonwealth citizens are at risk of arrest, jail time, mob violence and discrimination in employment, housing, education and health care.
“These anti-LGBT+ laws violate the Commonwealth Charter which pledges that all member states are ‘committed to equality’ and are ‘opposed to all forms of discrimination.’
“Most Commonwealth leaders refuse to recognise that LGBT+ rights are human rights. For 75 years, they’ve vetoed any discussion of the issue at their heads of government meetings.
“Countries that criminalise LGBT+ people should be suspended from the Commonwealth.”
The protest will urge all Commonwealth governments to:
Decriminalise same-sex relations.
Prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Enforce laws against threats and violence, to protect LGBT+ people from hate crimes.
Consult and dialogue with their LGBT+ organisations.
NOTE: The six Commonwealth countries that have a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for same-sex acts are: Bangladesh, Guyana, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda.

[ad_1] Harmanpreet Kaur in action for India in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup (PC: ICC) Snehasis Mukherjee in Dubai Team India face their toughest challenge yet as they take on Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah tomorrow. The Aussies remain undefeated, making it an uphill battle for the Women in Blue. Historically, Australia have dominated India in this tournament, with four wins and from six meetings. India must win to stay in the race for a semi-final spot. If New Zealand finish with the same points, net run rate (NRR) will come into play, adding extra pressure. India’s last T20 World Cup win over Australia was in Sydney in 2020, though they later lost the final to them in Melbourne. Injuries Pooja Vastrakar’s availability for India remains uncertain. In yesterday’s practice session, she appeared more confident, running better, taking high catches, and hitting the stumps direct, showing improvement from previous sessions. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was seen doing fitness stretches and running sprints alone, but there were few concerns about her being ready for the big game. Players to watch out for Harmanpreet has scored the most runs against Australia so far, with 143 runs in six innings at an average of 23.83 and a strike-rate of 114.40.
