THE HOT MEDIEVAL & FANTASY MEN MELEE
SECOND ROUND: 34th Tilt
Edward the Black Prince, A Knight's Tale (2001) VS. Sir Guy of Gisborne, BBC’s Robin Hood (2006-2009)
Propaganda
Edward the Black Prince, A Knight's Tale (2001) Portrayed by: James Purefoy Defeated Opponents: - King Henry VII Tudor [Luke Treadaway], The Hollow Crown (2012-2016) - Gendry [Joe Dempsie], Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
“The medieval romantic disguised royalty trope, the ridiculous but very sexy long leather coat, the cheeky sense of humour...”
Sir Guy of Gisborne, BBC’s Robin Hood (2006-2009) Portrayed by: Richard Armitage Defeated Opponents: - Prince Dastan [Jake Gyllenhaal], Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) - The Kurgan [Clancy Brown], Highlander (1986)
“I'm submitting him so that I can emphasize just how incredibly hot he is. Armitage's Guy of Gisborne would be a top-tier hottie based on looks alone, but it's the characterization and performance that really put him over the top for me. He constantly radiates scorn and coiled rage, but he's also heart-breakingly sincere and vulnerable when it comes to Marian, who of course doesn't return his feelings, and Armitage manages to make him deeply sympathetic in his pain and betrayal even when he's lashing out in anger. This character is all about the PINING, and there's nothing hotter than that.”
Additional Propaganda Under the Cut
Additional Propaganda
For Prince Edward:
For Sir Guy:
“Tall, dark, brooding… and utterly pathetic. I love him.”

Good grief.
This is like someone stole the unwritten smut from my imagination, filmed it and aired it on Saturday night prime time telly.

THE SHERIFF AND GUY OF GISBORNE
uh. try to stay with me for a second. so incest motifs are a huge part of medieval lit. you see it in arthuriana cycles, you see it in romances, it's a whole thing.
Incest and the Medieval Imagination, Elizabeth Archibald
so robin hood. both adaptions and the text itself, tend to get interesting with guy of gisborne. and I will say that while I found the media being discussed in this text absolutely fucking insufferable to watch, the discussion on it was delicious, impeccable, show stopping
Mouvance, Greenwood, and Gender in The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Brian J Levy and Lesley Coote
and with regards to discussions on the origin text (which I love and adore forever)
Horseplay: Robin Hood, Guy of Gisborne, and the Neg(oti)ation of the Bestial, Stuart Kane
we're. getting to the point, I promise. guy of gisborne and the sheriff in my own "adaption" are not cousins, but brothers in law (fucked up brothers in law are my thing over on my other blog. brutus and cassius? I'm there. caligula and lepidus? all over that, baby!) because I'm aiming for an adjacent transgression.
on the topic of adjacent transgressions and guy's comment in this comic about cannibalism: there's an overlap in various genres of literature, predominantly in branches of horror and tragedy: between cannibalism and incest. (additionally! a lot of texts will take on christian subtexts and allusions, so there's a bonus homoerotic cannibalism discussion happening wrt communion that I'll get into in the future) it's about. chomping. the teeth, you know.
Managing Monsters, Marina Warner
Statius and Virgil: The Thebaid and the Reinterpretation of the Aeneid, Randall T. Ganiban
there's a 100% chance I will revise the sheriff's design at some point, but I wanted to draw the flowers exploding out of the spine so bad
AND FINALLY, the neck focus on guy is half due to his fate in his origin tale (beheaded) and half my own invention: I girl-with-a-green-ribboned him. a little narrative necromancy, if you will.
#long post#outlaws in the woods tag#im sorry for how long this is and also bc its 2am but also i am not sorry. i love medieval literature and horror#the sheriff wants to crawl inside guy's ribcage and eat his lungs#he is. interestingly enough. horrified at what everyone else does to guy's body#its about possession. obsession. who else has the right to eat you etc#im going to go folk catholicism forced sainthood on guy and every second of it is going to be awful for him#i will do narrative necromancy but i will adhere to the rules of the setting and the setting is TERRIBLE#i love it! sorry guy of gisborne.#anyway you guys ever watch showtime's borgias. favorite show. so. so uh. you know that one scene. the---

You know tumblr did it right when you search for bbc robin hood and 98% of the results is guy of gisborne.
However, I want to notice that now that I’m rewatching the show my face was totally astounded when I heard Sheriff saying ”A clue: no” for the first time in 10 years. I had totally forgotten it yet I had some memories unlocked! i definitely used it as a phrase back then! (And perhaps should start again)
Plus Keith Allen is marvelous! And I love the character. These two are my reasons to watch the show (even though the vibes, angles and everything is so close to Merlin that I’d love to just change it to Camelot.)

Um...guys...I did something bad...
Something really bad...
Awful, idiotic, egregious even...
I watched the first episode of Robin Hood (2006) with Richard Armitage...
ONLY the first episode...
And now, all I can think about is what would happen if Robin 'Hood' of Locksley had a sister named Raven.
Gah! I don't have any idea if it would work with the canon/time period of the show since I've only watched the first episode, but now I want to write an enemies-to-lovers fanfic about Guy of Gisborne and Raven 'Hood' of Locksley.
Why does my brain do this to me?!
Also...Robin is such a cocky womanizing playboy that I couldn't help rolling my eyes every time he interacted with a woman.
I swear if I do write Raven as his sister, her eyes could be in serious danger of getting stuck in the back of her head from rolling her eyes so much at her brother.

I discovered a gif set recently, made up of some of RA character deaths, some of whom were Lucas North, John Porter, Sir Guy, and Thorin. 😭😭😭
WHYYY 😭😭😭 that hurt to run into!! (I haven’t ever watched Spooks, nor Strike Back’s second season, nor RH’s last season, but ouch💔💔)
At least they survive in fanfiction.
I think I’ve come across that GIF set, too! And it’s heartbreaking. So many amazing characters are in there. 😞😞😞😞
But, you’re right, we have fanfiction that can right the wrongs of the canon world.
😉😉😉
Here are some GIFs of our beautiful men.
And, not forgetting……..
♥️♥️♥️
