Absolutely amazing to see The Gutenberg Bible up close, all the attention to detail in the fonts and beautiful colored artwork inscribed on the pages.-2022 The Bible, produced by Johann Gutenberg (ca. 1397–1468), is considered the first substantial book printed in Europe. Gutenberg's Bible was issued in an edition of approximately 175 copies. Only 48 of them survive today, including 12 on prepared animal skin known as vellum, such as the one seen here. We're in rainy NYC today to see the J.R.R. Tolkien exhibit at the Morgan Library & Museum. The library is home to a ton of permanent exhibits, rare art and books. This piece is a little bit outside our usual realm of nerdity, but we couldn't resist sharing it: a Gutenberg Bible - one of the earliest books ever printed using mass-produced movable metal type. Sunday was #austinmuseumday and today I decided to spend the day visiting the museums and galleries at @utaustintx. My first stop was @ransomcenter. And guess what, it was my first time visiting here. I got to see the #gutenbergbible and other notable collections. Basically, this place is a archival sanctuary for printmakers. We had a short day at work today so I went to visit #TheMorganLibrary for my very first time. It’s absolutely extraordinary. It’s physically beautiful and houses some of the most incredible books and artifacts on earth. There were only about 180 #GutenbergBibles in the original press run, about 50 still exist today — #TheMorgan has three of them. The Gutenberg Bible, the first book in the Western world printed in movable type, was published on this day in 1455. It's estimated that the Bible has since been printed more than five billion times. The royalties must be divine.
