I'm tired. Have a Metal Family headcannon that I don't know how it formed:

(headcannon and rambling below cut.)

cw for mentions of abuse, alcohol/alcoholism.

So... yeah, Gustav's a bad guy. We all know that.

And I have no idea why, but recently my brain just went: "What if he was also abused by his dad, but didn't have the guts to run / abandon his family like Glam did so he was just stuck in that situation" and stuff of that caliber, how because it's how he grew up it's how he ended up treating his kids and his wife.

And that the only reason Mary stayed was because they grew up together or something (and were good friends) so she still wanted to hold onto the sort of hope that he could still be the boy she'd been friends with all those years ago. (with this idea, I just get the feeling they were an arranged marriage, with his parents not KNOWING how close they were as kids.)

And honestly. Fuck, I want some content of that. I don't know why, it's just so... interesting to me? To think about young Gustav, and why he is the way he is now. To get that sort of INSIDE view of his mind.

Also, with this train of thought, he tends to drink to cope. Trying to forget what his father did, despite it being so ingrained in him that he does the same to his own kids.

And honestly, I can see Mary being a real anchor for him, trying to keep him grounded (I could see him being VERY lost without her. emotionally and mentally. because she's the only one who's bothered to stay or something of that sort. everyone else sort of stopped trying to deal with his "bs" and decided he "wasn't worth it" anymore. so she's basically keeping him as stable as she can. still clinging to that little hope and keeping a tiny bit alive in him.)

I can also see some sort of Mary trying to comfort/coax him out of drinking for the night when he's in a calmer mood. (reminding him of previous "hey, it'll be alright" type moments between them.)

I don't know where this came from, or how, or why.

It sort of got screamed at me by my brain... and now it won't leave, and I am clinging to it now. (not trying to justify Gustav's behavior, or say Gustav isn't still a piece of shit father and husband. just saying this is now something imprinted on my brain. IDK why this was what my brain screamed at me this time, only that it happened and now it's just here.)

Honestly, kinda interesting having HCs about them, seeing as how little screen time they get.

(I mean... the HC is mostly about Gustav... but, still.)

this is mostly about younger glam (like s1 e9 and 10 ish)

the violin intro – glam was under so much pressure to be perfect at the violin so i feel like hed have quite a bit of trauma from it

"i hope you burn" (basically just the whole chorus) – this reminded me of that one bit in his journal where he lets himself slip and writes about what he'd do to gustav if he could. also gustav was an asshole who deserved a painful death

"'cause there's no such thing as hell, but if there was, you'd be the first to burn" – 99% sure glam (and the rest of his metal family) are atheist. also gustav is dead

"oh fuck, what have i done" – i feel like glam would have a bit of trouble snapping back to the calm side of himself, so he may have a few of those thoughts but overall get absorbed into the merciless revenge. idk i wasn't sure how to explain this

"all the words you spit are ingrained" – remember when glam kept snapping at dee while trying to teach him guitar? yeah that's definitely from gustavs constant verbal abuse

"treat a woman like a bitch" – we can't ignore the way mary kept flinching and was always hesitant around gustav. also "she's a girl! [insert whatever comes next cuz i forgot]" like dude. a bit misogynistic, amirite

"i guess your kid's gone mad" – yeah sorry glam but you're a tad bit silly

"look at my wrist" – i believe tx2s original meaning behind this was... something else, but glam also has scars on his wrist from gustavs ruler (which he covers up with the wristbands)

"an alcoholic who couldn't look farther" – gustav was definitely an excessive drinker, and he also couldn't look farther, seeing glam only as someone who needed to be the best of the best, no matter what

honorable mention: "who's the f*g now" – not a glam thing but this was good wordplay because it's both the slur and an old word for a bundle of sticks, like ones that would typically be used in fires

Glam / Sebastian Shvagenbagen x fem!Reader

Music, candlelight, and expensive perfume. Where people reunite and others meet.

______________________________________________________________ Before Glam, his name was Sebastian, the son of Gustav Shvagenbagen. A talented violin player living a double life. She was a young opera singer who recently moved to Russia with her loving father. Their paths crossed, an undeniable conection just when they needed each other the most. Their lives have been written for them, but when the heart calls to live another one, which path are they choosing?

A/N: A little slow burn, I think? Both Glam and Reader are 18 years old. English is not my first language, but I’ll do my best. Hope you like it :)

The Spring Gala. Only the wealthiest families of the city were invited and it was known in the past for being the night where most marriages were arranged. Sure, times have changed, but if the kids of these families were to marry for love… it would be even better if they fell for someone whose last name meant economic security for the rest of their lives, right?

Gustav and Mary Shvagenbagen attended the Gala every year. Last year was Lydia’s first time attending, since she reached the majority of age first, and this year was Sebastian’s debut. The whole family wearing their best clothes and pride high. They are the best of the best, after all.

As usual, once inside they became the center of attention. Many guests looking their way but no one brave enough to approach them and start an actual conversation. That was until…

-Gustav Shvagenbagen!- a smiling man walked towards them followed by a young lady. -It has been a while.

-It has indeed, my friend- both, Lydia and Sebastian were surprised by their father’s unusually friendly behavior. -Where have you been all these years?

-Italy. My daughter and I just returned to Russia.- he then turned to the girl behind him. -(Y/n), this is my good friend Gustav Shvagenbagen.

-A pleasure- she timidly offered her hand, and he kissed it in an old fashioned greeting.

-This is my wife Mary, our daughter Lydia, and our son Sebastian.- the women shook hands politely. Then, the young man placed a kiss on (Y/n)’s knuckles like his father did.

(Y/n) couldn’t stop herself from noticing how handsome Sebastian was. His tall and slim figure wearing an expensive looking suit, blonde hair perfectly slicked back, sharp factioned face, but above this and his serious expression, two beautiful blue eyes. Even with the short glimpse they exchanged, she felt like those eyes could see right through her. She felt heat on her cheeks and looked down as soon as she could. Hoping no one else noticed her blushing.

As the night went by, the old friends catched up. (Y/father) talked about their life in Italy and that they came back so (Y/n) could study in the famous music conservatory of the city this summer.

-So you’re a musician.- Said Lydia. -Which instrument do you play?

-Voice. I’m a singer- she felt a little intimidated by Lydia’s presence, plus she could feel the weight of Sebastian’s eyes on her -…Mezzosoprano… I-I sing opera.

She seemed content with the girl’s reply. Gustav then spoke about his young musicians. How Lydia was already studying in the conservatory, and that Sebastian was also going to enter in summer.

After a while, (Y/father) asked for Gustav’s permission to dance with Mary, and after agreeing, Lydia was guided by her father to the dance floor as well, leaving (Y/n) and Sebastian alone.

They stayed silent for a while, looking at the people walzing in the center of the room. Once she gathered the courage, the girl tried to start the conversation.

-I’m glad I came here today. Now that I know Lydia and you, I won’t be alone at school.

He didn’t reply. Just looked at her for a few seconds and then returned his attention to the people dancing. She became nervious again, maybe he didn’t hear her, or her accent was too thick for him to comprehend. After all, she had lived her whole life in Italy, maybe her Russian wasn’t as good as she thought.

-Which instrument do you play?- she tried again.

-The violin- he finally talked, not looking at her.

-You must have good tone then.

-I have ideal tone.

-Cool.- she said a little disappointed at his attitude.

Some time passed in awkward silence but Sebastian didn’t realized it, his eyes were glued ahead while listening to the music the guests were dancing to. When he snapped back to reality he noticed (Y/n) was still beside him, but she looked uncomfortable, looking around as if searching for a way to escape the scene. He suddenly finds himself talking without thinking the words first.

-Do you wanna dance?

She looks at him with a confused look. Wow, she really IS pretty, he thought. Sebastian found her attractive since he first saw her walking behind her father from one side of the room to the other, greeting people every now and then, but now he confirms it.

-Sorry, you asked me to dance with you?- she couldn’t believe her ears. Minutes earlier he acted like he didn’t wanted her near him and now he’s asking her to dance?

-I mean, if you want to, of course- The young man extended his hand. After contemplating it for a while, she took it and let him guide her to the center of the ballroom.

They had fun for hours without noticing, swirling around with the music. He was thankful he didn’t have to spent the night around his family, and dancing with (Y/n) almost made him forget about the pain on his right arm from the studying session he had with his father earlier that night.

She laughed almost every time he made her spin, and that sound made him crack a little smile on his stoic self. He did it often, trying to surprise her every time in hopes to hear her laugh again. Sebastian thought to himself that if her singing was as melodical as her laugh, she was going to be the best singer of the conservatory.

Months passed and summer finally arrived. All the young musicians in the city have been studying for today’s exam, for its result would define if they could study in the conservatory or not.

(Y/n) entered the room and scanned it looking for a place to seat. Walking towards an empty chair, her eyes met a pair of known blue ones. She hadn’t seen Sebastian since the ball, but the anticipation of meeting him again was more stressful than the actual exam. And there he was, sitting at the back of the classroom.

She sat down and saw more people enter the room, one of them was Lydia. She headed straight towards the back without looking at anyone, head high as always. (Y/n) assumed she sat next to Sebastian in the back and forced herself not to take a glance behind. Why was Lydia in the exam if she was already studying in the conservatory?

She closed her eyes to take a deep breath. She needed to focus. This exam was the first step for her to achieve her dreams, she could not afford to be unfocused by the blonde duo sitting behind.

The girl kept her eyes shut as she tried to stabilize her breath and heartbeat. Once she opened them, a tall figure in a black suit was standing in front of the teacher’s desk, violin in hand, ready to take the exam first.

She knew she was going to need to focus again after this, but just for now, she allowed herself to look at him and listen to the so called ideal tone of the blonde man and his beautiful instrument.

Metal Family Review

In recent years, there has been an increase in indie animations, including on platforms such as YouTube. One of those series is the musical-themed Russian mature animation series, Metal Family.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 19, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the eighth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on January 8, 2022.

The action-adventure and drama series focuses on a Russian family of metal fans, each with their own personalities: there are Victoria and Glam, two metalheads in love with one another, and they have two children, Heavy and Dee. It follows the creative ways that the family deals with problems every day and manifests various tropes. Dee is 15 years old and Heavy is 13. Victoria is 37 and Glam is 39-40.

The series has a number of interesting small details that sets it apart from other animation series. For example, the opening of each episode begins with the character, or characters, hanging up their key, with the way each character hangs up their key a specific reflection of their personalities. There are also various pop culture references throughout the series to bands such as Metallica, System of a Down, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, and Led Zeppelin. Unlike some other series, this show takes place in a blurred world, without any specific location.

Metal Family does not shy away from mature topics. Victoria often drinks and smokes, while her husband, Glam, does not. She even gambles. The last part of the first season focuses on Glam Shvagenbagen’s troubled childhood going to a music conservatory. He meets a friend named Ches/ Chive who introduced him to Twisted Sister, heavy metal music, and gives him his current nickname. He leaves home for good after living with his abusive father, Gustav. Leaving his past behind, he chooses to be part of the “rabble” as his father puts it. He finds a family for himself in music and in the companionship of Victoria.

The show plays with the idea of a “strong man” defending a “weak” woman. In this series, Glam is diminutive but nasty in a polite way while Victoria is buff and brash. She is not afraid to throw a person out of a window or punch a hole through a wall, if warranted. Glam is more calculating and can solve problems by using his mind. Victoria likes to smash things apart – as she does in an escape room in an episode. She is a little like Princess Bean in Disenchantment, an alcoholic, and Harley Quinn in the series of the same name, who carries around a baseball bat which she uses to protect herself, those she cares about, and fight for what she believes is right.

The series is produced by a small team and is created by Alina Kovaleva. Xydownik co-directed the series with Kovaleva. Both work as series animators. According to the fandom site for the series, Koveleva works on the series full-time, using Adobe Animate CC. It took over two years to create the show’s first season. Alexey Khrapov worked in the show’s sound department. Alexey Vasilevsky composed original music, apart from the show’s other music. Karin Karimova worked as a violinist, Daniyl Yakovenko as a music consultant, and Luis Rojas as a guitar soloist.

The Russian voice actors have been consistent. Blin voices Glam and Dee. Roman Volkov voices Gustav and Xydownik voices Heavy. Kovaleva voiced a Youtube Instructor in a 2021 episode as well as Victoria. Xydownik also voices Ches in two episodes, along with characters like Rowd and the Conservatory Dean. Flynn The VA voices Drusilla. There’s also a background character named Celestie, and therapist Dr. Hans.

The English dub introduced new voice actors, including Elliot Cancel as Chive / Ches, Randolph Castellanos as Dee, Lydia Shvagenbagen, and Richard Armstrong, Hoctor as Gustav, London Hartman as Heavy, Kylie Ann as Mary Shvagenbagen, Ry Harte as Glam, and Chiari Queen as Victoria. Hoctor also voices biker gang member Bug, Ann voices Anna, a cynical radical feminist.

The series first aired on September 13, 2018, released in Russian, with English subtitles added after its release, ending its run in 2020. The pilot episode was also a music video sung by Avantasia, is entitled “The Story ain’t Over.” Since February 2021, an English dub of the episodes has been released on a separate YouTube channel, with a hilarious 3-minute trailer for the release of the English dub. Through 2021, the 10-episode first season aired on YouTube and the second season began in late December 2021. Oksana Gunchenko helped translate and adapt the episodes of the series.

The series has been positively received by fans, with over 140 fan fics on Archive of Our Own, garnering hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, and has high rankings on IMDB. Hundreds of thousands more follow a fan site for the show on the Russian language social media platform, VK. This is impressive for a series with relatively new voice actors, with this series as their first big roles, and even for animators. A few are involved in other indie animated projects, like Kylie Ann as an animator on Legends of Myiorda, an anime/cartoon series. Some previously worked on Russian language productions.

Updates about the series are shared on Xydownik’s Russian-language YouTube channel, the Instagram account of Kovaleva, a channel on Telegram, and Kovaleva’s VK account. Like Helluva Boss, Heavy, one of the show’s characters, has an official Instagram account, posting candid photos from his life. This encourages people to be more deeply invested in the show. There’s even an official store to buy merchandise and items related to the show.

The voice acting and animation of Metal Family were intriguing. The story kept me watching the episodes and I say this as as a person who likes listening to metalheads like Caleb Hyles and the band Twisted Sister. The characters were complex enough and were not stereotypes which made me excited about what is going to come next. In the end, I’d highly recommend this series, especially for those who like badass characters, music, and compelling stories.
