1964-09-13 Expressen 1964-09-13 GT 1964-09-14 Aftonbladet Hur gick det sen?, adaptation of the Book About Moomin, Mymble and Little My. Run-time approximately 20 minutes. Aired on SVT at 18:00 on Sunday the 13th September 1964. The production involved child actors climbing through a macrosized recreation of the book. As explained in hindsight, the kids had to handle all the page-turning and what-not themselves, which resulted in awkward pacing and distracted acting. Cast: Moomintroll - Staffan Kåge Mymble - Eva Hillered Little My - Fredrika Schartau Narrator - Birgitta Ulfsson Set design - Gunnel Linde (Possibly also producer and director?) Music - Sven-Erik Johansson Writer - Tove Jansson

Here's a fun fact (courtesy of psychologist Bo Hejlskov-Elvén): kids don't learn from their mistakes. We think they do because adults do, but kids commit mistakes ALL THE TIME (just think of learning to walk!) so they learn by doing things right.
As author Gunnel Linde put it: trying to raise children by teaching them what not to do is like trying to teach them the multiplication tables by process of elimination: "five times five isn't forty, five times five isn't thirty-two..."
Punishment does fuck-all. Show the kids what to do, lead by example, and accept that they're not going to get everything right on the first try, because no one ever does. (And depending on your child's maturity, brain structure, and what you're trying to teach, maybe not even on the hundredth try.)
So many Pro-Spanking advocates talk about how they “Deserved” to be hit by their parents because they were “a bad kid.” And it makes me so sad.
You weren’t.
You weren’t a bad kid, and you didn’t deserve to be hit. Maybe you were a difficult kid, maybe you struggled with boundaries or rules or expectations. Maybe you had bad behavior much of the time. But you, yourself, were not and are not a BAD person for that, and you didn’t EARN violence. You didn’t have it coming. It shouldn’t have happened to you.

RIP Gunnel Linde, 1924-2014
One of Sweden's finest children's authors (with some books translated to English, German, and other languages) as well as one of the strongest national forces for children's rights. Instrumental in the creation of BRIS (The Children's Right In Society) and in the law against corporal punishment.
She also wrote for radio and television, sometimes directly, sometimes adaptations of her works. If you're in Sweden, plenty of her stuff can be seen here. (I'm particularly fond of Det hopfällbara slottet.)
Quotation from her book När jag var mamma (When I Was a Mom):
"It's a given: you don't hit your friends, so why should you hit your children? But that's not all: It's not a useful method. Nobody turns out better for being beaten. As Göta Rosén said back in the days when corporal punishment was abandoned in Swedish reformatories: If beatings helped, all of our juvenile delinquents would be angels, because they've sure had a lot of those!
"In addition to that, there's a historical reason not to use fear and assault to make someone do as requested: We don't live in an authoritarian state anymore, but in a democratic one. Because of that, everyone must start practicing choice from an early age, find their own opinion and beliefs in order to think and function in society. It's no longer a viable excuse to claim that mommy and daddy know best, or that the dictator, king, or pope has said so. All you have to subject yourself to is a sensible idea, whoever came up with it first.
"I think that's one of the most important conclusions Barnens Rättsutredning (the Legal Research Team for Children's Rights) reached during their research before the ban on corporal punishment, which was written into law in 1979. The same ban was made law in China already in 1949! When I heard that, I was so surprised, I asked the same thing everyone had asked me concerning the issue: - But what do you do if the children don't obey you? The Chinese man replied: 'We convince them.'
"An important effect of the ban on corporal punishment is also that no parent these days can beat their children to a pulp and excuse themselves by claiming it's discipline. Marianne Höök's suggestion has become law: 'Remove the words corporal punishment from common word usage. Call violence violence, that clears the thoughts!'"
