Wait, if it IS the G versions like I thought though, then doesn't that mean we might get Black Gungnir for Maria instead of Airgetlam?
??? Yes???

Here’s some thoughts of what rwby characters would wield which Symphogear. Planning to draw them or something.
Tumblr media
Rwby - Igalima. Scythe + outwardly happy and optimistic but hiding some pretty massive struggles.
Weiss - Ama No Habakiri. Sword + pretty much the same character as Tsubasa at times
Blake - Airgetlám. Also a sword but more specifically a whip sword and daggers. This is the only one where I think color would be important for the gear but Blake would look great in Silver. Also the whole used to be part of a villainous organization thing Maria and Blake have going on
Penny - Shénshòujìng. Floating and laser beams. Best friend and totally girlfriend of the main character. Not technically part of the main team but definitely is. Keeps getting mind controlled and/or fridged.
Pyrrha- Gungnir, more so Kanade’s version. Spear. Dead wife Haunting the narrative.
Now’s where it gets a little more difficult. Either Yang or Nora could easily take Igalima but neither really fits Shul Shagana.
Also if we want to go this route either could inherit Gungir, but I think it would be most interesting if Cinder took it from her. Or I could trans Jaune… there were two gungnirs so I could do both…
What I’ve decided on is this
Yang gets Igalima. She has been getting more guns and bombs as the series goes on so this is the natural progression. Plus the whole sad but also having fun fighting monsters thing.
That leaves Nora with Shul Shagana. She can’t really do the twin tail buzzsaw thing so I’ll have to change her hammer into a saw hammer. It would match Igalima better and those are supposed to be twin blades. Sugar Rush nation stays winning?
Ren and Oscar and Jaune(maybe) in the support staff because they can’t touch Noise without disintegrating (rip Pyrrha)

Sitting here thinking about the sheer amount of absolute WTF-ery in Chaldea should there ever be a collab with Symphogear.
The remnants of the Ignite Module would raise a question from Sigurd.
Idol X gets along well with the girls. Nero and Elizabeth, not so much as they do tend to pester them a bit too much.
The Prillya characters get along really well with them.
The girls are extremely suspicious of Paracelsus due to him reminding them a bit too much of Adam for their own good. (The voice does not help.)
Basically the entire Norse roster would be giving Hibiki weird looks because, y'know, Gungnir, CasCu in particular for obvious reasons. Nobu remarks that she reminds her of Summer Okita - maybe a bit too much. Is friends and sparring partners with most of the martial artist servants, in particular Li (both of them) due to her fighting style being primarily based on Bajiquan. At one point gets ahold of Durandal and is able to use it, much to everyone's surprise.
Miku is well-loved by a lot of the child servants due to her demeanor, and is probably a regular on the kitchen crew. Has likely caught the attention of a lot of the older Chinese Servants due to them recognizing what the Shenshoujing is and what it can do. Is considered one of the people you do not want to piss off because the nature of the Shenshoujing basically means she can shut down your Noble Phatasm with little effort.
Ibuki-Doji would probably mess with Tsubasa due to her being a divided spirit of Yamata-no-Orochi because said Orochi was killed by the Ame-no-Habakiri, the same relic Tsubasa's Gear is powered by. Chiyome would have a tougher time warming up to her for the same reasons. Tsubasa also probably gets along surprisingly well with Kagetora due to relating over feeling less than human (that and Kagetora likes her voice.)
Chris also gets odd looks from the Norse servants, but this time due to vague familiarity rather than recognizing the weapon due to Ichaival's odd status; on a related note, Okki, Blackbeard, and Jinako are very tight-lipped whenever it comes to discussing it. Tomoe nearly spills the beans but gets told to shush by the other three. Gets along well with the sharpshooter servants, especially those that use guns - except Koyanskaya.
Maria gets weird looks from both the Norse and Babylonian servants, the Norse side due to familiarity with the relic, but it not feeling quite right, and the Babylonians because she weirdly reminds them of Enki when transformed. Bedivere manages to figure it out without her telling him due to him being in a similar situation (having an "Airgetlam" that isn't actually the arm of Nuadha) and both bond rather quickly.
Kirika and Shirabe get a load of double takes from the Babylonian Divine Spirits due to them giving off a feeling similar to both Zababa as well as Ninurta's kids (mostly the former.) Get along very well with a lot of the duo Servants. Shirabe in particular picks up several tricks from Melt. Kirika actually freaks Murasaki out slightly due to both sounding vaguely similar to her as well as the fact that Kirika and Nagiko get along like a house on fire.

Elsa with Black Gungnir from @mousegard's F.I.S./Noble Red roleswap AU!
Design commentary under the cut.
So, when the fic itself takes place Elsa's relic is Airgetlam. Thing is, as soon as I learned that she'd previously been the wielder of Black Gungnir, the mental image was so clear that I had to draw this instead.
I had a lot of fun figuring out how she'd contrast with other Gungnir wielders. From what we've seen, there are a set of consistent variations and similarities between symphogears with multiple users.
The first thing I wanted to nail down was the motif. Every symphogear has its own motif (Kirika is a witch, Chris is a fighter jet, and Shirabe is a rabbit), and if a symphogear has multiple wielders, their motifs will share the same general theme (Maria is a princess/knight and Serena is a fairy; both have European folklore theme). Gungnir is a little bit harder to nail down, but at some point I realized that, with Kanade's wild hair and demeanour evoking an animal, Maria's cape sometimes resembling bat wings, Hibiki's berserk state, and the horns shared between all three, this relic has an overarching 'beast' theme. I could absolutely make that work for Elsa, and her gear's motif became the Big Bad Wolf.
While Maria's Black Gungnir clearly took inspiration from Kanade, Elsa's more resembles Hibiki. Just like Hibiki, her hands are her armed gear, although she interpreted that a little differently, choosing to fight with wolverine-style claws. Unlike Maria's cape, which serves to make her look bigger and more intimidating/evil, Elsa's cloak incorporates a hood, which implies that she instead prefers to hide in the shadows. The fur pelt however, shows that she's still trying to make herself look bigger and tougher than she actually feels, implying uncertainty and insecurity. Furthermore, it and the red lining of the cape tie her visually to the characters of The Hunter and Little Red Riding Hood. The hood also hides her pink hair, distinguishing her from Maria.
I also gave her freckles, because I feel like Elsa should have freckles.

Thinking about Maria's character design goes through so much to convey her journey through all of Symphogear.
Initially her casual design has the one stocking in a darker shade while her outfit also incorporates whites showing how she's torn between doing both good and evil. In her concert with Tsubasa she wears white before swapping to black for her transformation, but doing so while on stage as the entire thing is largely performative. She's still unsure of where she stands with everything. Even her outfit is a mirror of Hibiki, with the cloak contrasting the scarf, obscuring Maria while Hibiki's flows freely as Hibiki doesn't hide who she is.
As G progresses and Maria feels the only course of action is to double down on her path, her casual outfit becomes darker and her leggings eventually cover both her legs fully. It is only after Hibiki then takes Gungnir that she emerges from this darkness and clads herself in Airgetlám does she come full circle and get shown in white. Interestingly, at the end of G she's shown to wield both a sword and fist, which she and Hibiki combine for thematic reasons of both groups coming together to defeat the Nephilim.
And the in GX things get really interesting. First off during the concert, her and Tsubasa have mirror outfits again, though instead of a black/white dichotomy, they are both in dark blue and white, with their outfits essentially being the negative space created by the other's outfit. But more importantly, both and Tsubasa's colors. While Maria's design does feature white heavily, her colors are more silver and light blue. She's still not come into her own, which makes sense because at this point she's still pretending to be someone else for the sake of the world, Tsubasa's partner but not standing on her own.
Next design shift is when she briefly takes up Gungnir again, going back to her G design though notably without the cape. She's no longer trying to play the villain, but it's not her own power and she can't keep the farce of being Gugnir's wielder for long, and she recognizes that this isn't her power, it's Hibiki's.
Once Airgetlám has finally been repaired we see that her weapon is one armored fist and a short sword, half of both Hibiki's and Tsubasa's weapons. She's still trying to live up to other's expectations and be someone she isn't, namely just like Tsubasa whom she admires and stands alongside on stage and Hibiki, who's hand saved her when she was at her darkest. But that's not who Maria is, and falls to Dáinsleif's curse while trying to activate the Ignite module.
Once she accepts that she's weak for trying to be just like the others, she really starts to come into her own. Every other Harmonizer is highly speciallized; Tsubasa has swords, Hibiki does martial arts, Chris has so many guns, Kirika has scythe blades and Shirabe has buzzsaws/yoyos. They are all masters of one thing. Maria is a Jack of all trades.
Her weapons include short swords, knives, a chain whip, a gauntlet for punching people, shields, a rail cannon, and a drill. She's all over the place and adapts to the situation which also plays into the fact that she's much more of a gadget person because she's also a secret agent.
The one armored fist is also really consistent with how she hit people from GX to XZ. All the villains she faces get hit with her left fist, the armored one, but all throughout XZ when she needs to snap Tsubasa out of her own head, she uses her right hand, the more gentle and caring side of her. Asymmetrical character design is really good for a lot of stuff as it turns out.
Not a whole lot to say about her Amalgam outfit aside from I really like the design and her Amalgam being a silver dragon is super rad and paired with Tsubasa's phoenix is a symbol for stable marriage and whops Symphogear dropped all this gay all over the floor again. Not that these two haven't had just so many lines of unhinged gay that go uncommented on throughout the entire show.
Partners in more ways than one, though that's another essay.
Anyway Maria's super neat and Symphogear continues to live rent free in my brain.

Symphogear attack names
@mimeparadox alerted me to the fact that Kirika's attack names are crimes against linguistics, so I started looking at all of the Gear users' attacks. Much thanks to the wiki, which helpfully compiles not only the attacks, but their title cards, the romanization, and the original text!
I'm only looking at anime attacks. From "least cringe" to "Kirika":
Miku: Two-character Chinese phrases. Short, sweet, dignified.
Hibiki: Cheating because she doesn't get attack name cards at all. See post-ranking paragraphs.
Mid-tier: Maria/Tsubasa/Kanade tie. These girls are chuuni, but are relatively self-aware enough to have some restraint. However, Tsubasa might actually be one tier up by a sliver. She's getting away with some shit by doing hers in foreign language calligraphy, but see the post-ranking paragraphs.
Chris: Name that rock band! Golden spot of delightful indulgence. I dare anyone to not smile whenever MEGADETH PARTY shows up like an old friend. Chris has one (1) genre on her music player, and she doesn't give a fuck.
Shirabe: [greek alphabet letter]-style: {[spinning reference] AND/OR [cutting thing/action reference] wrapper addition/s to make it chuuni}
Kirika: Aforementioned CRIMES AGAINST LINGUISTICS. Build a desired phrase. May or may not include kana-ized English referencing a western fictional character. Add chuuni Japanese as necessary. Find phonetic syllables in Japanese that can be represented by tortured kanji readings that fit desired meaning. Substitute other kana with English alphabet letters. Featuring such great hits as:
災輪・TぃN渦ぁBェル
愚焔・PぇtttE炉
断殺・邪刃ウォttKKK (did you know that you spell Jabberwock with "t"s? that's how Kirika rolls, death)
兇脚・Gぁ厘ィBアa
So, like, there are indications that these aren't relic-defined names, but things that the girls themselves came up with. The strongest evidence for this is Gungnir, which has three users across the length of the show. Not only does the show make it explicit that Hibiki is coming up with the attack names herself, as they are called "Hibiki Style", but even the two who are using Gungnir as intended, Kanade and Maria, have their attacks names tailored to them. Kanade's all involve the "∞" sign, which don't show up in Hibiki or Maria's attacks.
Maria and Chris also both present even stronger evidence, as the rare users who have performed attacks across two different relics, and their tailored quirks are present in both. With Gungnir and Airgetlam, Maria's attacks feature the "†" sign splitting capitalized English. With both Nehushtan and Ichaival, Chris features rock band references in Old English font.
And this isn't even getting into the NONSENSE when combo attacks enter the fray, as each girl's naming quirks get thrown into a blender. Not only do we have Shirabe and Kirika throwing their Greek-letter-tortured-kanji-random-romanized-letters shit together into the likes of "禁合β式・Zあ破刃惨無uうNN", but then you add Maria's cross-capitalized-English-chuuni, and get "禁結終Ω式・爍機†TRINITY".
Another canon case of an attack evidently being named by a person is S2CA, which is short for "Superb Song Combination Arts", despite the fact that it makes zero sense in Japanese, where "Superb Song" is "Zessho". Forced acronyms transcend the curse of Balal!
(Tsubasa sidebar: so if we're assuming that attacks are named by their users, then the likelihood that Tsubasa's attacks are actually more chuuni in the original Japanese goes way up. Tsubasa doesn't know what normal is! Her baseline standard is the Kazanari family, and her ninja idol manager! Not to mention that her main transformation song is already borderline self parody in S2. Japanese imagery, sword, sword, blade, sword, blade, blade, I am sword, sword is me, etc. Maria and Kanade's attack names are constrained by being only 1-2 English words. Tsubasa out here throwing out flowery whole scroll calligraphy. Every added character brings her closer to Shirabe and Kirika's level.)
You may notice that this ranking suspiciously seems to follow the level of lack of blood family and divorce from civilian life. Chris, Maria, Shirabe, and Kirika are all orphans who were coerced into exploitation. However, Maria still had Serena, who overtly shares her surname, which suggests blood ties (they still don't share Anastassia's surname).
One step further on this, though, is that Chris was yet still closer to Kanade's situation in that she did know who her civilian parents were before she lost them. The Yukine surname was never in question, which is not necessarily the case for the Receptor Children. It's possible that some of these kids may have chosen their surnames for themselves after being freed from captivity.
Which would explain why you can get a Gundam-ass name like "Maria Cadenzavna Eve", which makes little to no sense in terms of ethnic name origin. Maria is Greek+Latin via Hebrew, Eve is English via Latinized Hebrew, and then Cadenzavna is a nonsense mishmash of Italian and Eastern European.
"Kusanagi Motoko" from Ghost in the Shell is a pseudonym (admitted canonically in 2nd gig), which is something like "(plain) Jane Excalibur". It seems obvious to me that "Akatsuki Kirika" and "Tsukuyomi Shirabe" are similar. The music/sound-based given names apply across most all of the Gear users, but I can easily see these two goobers picking the edgiest surnames (with shared moon connotations!) for themselves. Which, per the first half of this post, is reinforced by how chuuni their self-defined attack names are. (Meanwhile, Maria loses her little sister called Serena, and then replaces her with two girls with moon-associated surnames, eh. Maria, the Eastern European who would have been more likely to watch a dub of an anime than the sub, and wore that odango hairstyle as a child...)

Watched the 10th anniversary radio livestream at last and Aoi Yuuki mentionning she sang Ressō Gungnir (Maria's G song) at a Karaoke booth at some point has me cracking up. Because their voice types are so different - Now I want the whole cast to play a radio minigame where they have to sing a randomly pulled Sympho song. I want to hear how silly or unexpected some combos can turn out to be

You know, I'm kind of upset about how iconic the opening to Maria's song in G is (Kort el fes Gungnir!) because none of her other songs come close to it. Like, don't get me wrong, they're all bangers (my fav is Ginwan Airgetlam), but none of the openings have that same energy, y'know?
That ominous brass-and-strings opening note, the way everything cuts out for the choral line, and then that repeated, almost heraldic sequence from each section in turn...! It's just too damn good!

ƒ. Oh... So the look wasn't premeditated but someone he had worked for, huh? More like Maria instead of Tsubasa, then. What a demanding job, to take care of your appearance that much alongside how complex writing music and performing is. Thank god she wasn't an idol nor she ever wanted to be. What a drag. ❝ A cuirass bodice...? ❞ What was a bodice again? Wait, she remembered that word from a history book or something. Was it... Oh. Oh she remembered. And it showed on how quickly that air of doubt left her countenance. ❝ Ah! I know! ❞ But... ❝... But that's not it! I'd like a proper armor. ❞
Tumblr media
And even if Hiyori was currently speaking about a wide cuff bracelet, Bikki didn't seem to be particularly fond of it. She already has those! ... When she's wearing Gungnir of course. ❝ ... Maybe I'll just settle for an accesory. ❞ Even if she wasn't one to usually wear those. Very simple-minded when it came to clothing.
"You have a discerning eye! I've worked for such a look in magazines in the past," Hiyori replied proudly to her compliment. He was used to the association in more ways than one. In personality, the people he knew well would call him the same when they were feeling less charitable: a spoiled prince or a demanding princess.
"You know, I believe I saw something like a cuirass bodice at a previous shop along this street. It wouldn't function as armor whatsoever, but it's at least reminiscent of what you're thinking of." Pausing, he wandered closer to the outdoor display of the one they were currently passing.
Tumblr media
"Ooh, a wide cuff bracelet would do the same."
