My first "costume" was a closet cosplay of Duo Maxwell in Gundam Wing's Battlefield of Pacifists manga. Since it was in black and white, I guessed at the colors and textures and I used my real hair, which was pretty long back then. In 2005, this one girl came up to me and actually told me how shitty this costume was... Luckily I didn't care and kept going!

Everyone has to start somewhere. Even if your first costume is an off-color/off-texture nightmare! Don't be shitty to other people though! Just let people have fun and do their thing. Especially if they aren't harming anyone!

Obviously I do not wear this costume anymore, but maybe one day I will completely redo it!

pffffft realized a few minutes ago that i unintentionally put on a lazy heero yuy cosplay cause a) i was too lazy to take off the bike shorts i wore under a dress earlier when i put the dress away and b) had a green tank top laying around within range to take the place of the dress lmao

half considered tossing my oooold wig that i actually styled and used for my heero yuy cosplay years ago on but nah i got way too much hair to tuck under it now and none of the things i'd need for it

the boy may not have had good fashion sense but he sure did know how to be comfy!

HGAC Wing Gundam - the last of the original Gundam Wing quintet.

I'm still not a big fan of Gundam Wing. I still thing those mecha are a little too gimmicky for the "real robot" aesthetic Gundam typically has. And "bird mode" is certainly gimmicky. But, weirdly, this one probably has the most-normal Gundam loadout.

It's not designed purely for melee combat like Sandrock. It's not all guns, all the time like Heavyarms. It doesn't have a dragon arm like Shenlong. It's not cosplaying as the Grim Reaper like Deathscythe. It's got a fairly traditional beam saber, shield, and beam rifle.

I wanted to try building this kit without any of the stickers.

That's a metallic green Gundam Marker behind the lens in the chest. Some Army Painter matte black around the eyes, and metallic yellow/green Gundam Marker for the eyes and camera lens. I think it turned out pretty well. I like how fast the Gundam Markers dry.

That's some more Gundam Marker, metallic black this time, on the knees.

I was kind of surprised by the articulation on the wings. I mean, it's not amazing. But it's more than I expected from a high grade kit.

It's a fun build that really looks pretty good when it's done.

Unfortunately that transformation to "bird mode" is a huge let-down.

Giving this model a transformation means that some of the joints need extra wiggle-room to move around. And this makes those joints a little more fragile. I had issues with things popping off when trying to pose it.

And the transformation itself just isn't very impressive. This isn't really a problem with the model... It doesn't look great in the anime either. It's basically a robot flying around wearing its shield as a hat.

Instead of fevers, demons deal with freezes more often. Basically their bodies get colder in attempt to fight off certain sicknesses. Its easy to tell usually since the flames on their wings/horns/tails (if they have them) dim. Sometimes, layers of ice form along the body too. An chilly and swirling air pocket can also appear in more extreme cases...

One day Cass comes to wake her son up for school. The first that she notices is the very chilly door knob and then, as she opens the door, a gust of cold air brushes past her. She shivers, eyes closed for a moment. When she opens them, the sight that greets her is enough to make her stumble frantically forward. There's a trail of ice along the floor leading to Taylor who seems to be wrapped in as many blankets, jackets, and cosplay outfits as possible. Looks more like a shivering pile of cloth than a person. The only sounds in the room being the odd breeze, teeth chattering, and Cass' voice calling to her son in gradually increasing volume. He doesn't respond for ten minutes but it feels like a heart-clenching hour in his mom's heart. It's only as she carefully pulls off a partly stiff and chilled beanie--that she sees Taylors very pale and ice covered face. His gaze seems foggy, looking through her as he mutters a very quiet chant of "itscolditscolditscold" (Its cold, its cold, its cold)

And Cass has no idea what's going on but she pulls him into her arms right away anyway. The ice starts to creep onto her hands and the bulky, sharp-edged piece of a gundam suit arm is poking her side too. But, the concern and fear helps her ignore the discomfort. Many thoughts race in her mind on what to do to help or who she might get help from. She'd still remembers the struggle with the dentist about getting braces tightened and readjusted since his fangs were growing in. A shiver enough to also shake her draws her out of her thoughts. She whispers a soft chant in return. Something that used to help when he was smaller after a nightmare or a frighteningly loud storm. "It'll be okay, I'm here, I'm here."

something it occurred to me to wonder recently and thought if anyone would know, it would be you ;p

when Eva began back in 1995, how much was it anticipated? both narrowly in otaku circles, and more widely among 'people who watch TV in Japan'? as far as i understand the history, Gainax was pretty niche back then and mostly known for dating sim games, but the visual style of Eva is so immediately striking...

like, I know nobody quite realised just how huge it would become, but was there some sort of excitement for a new robot anime from the people who made Wings of Honneamise, Gunbuster and Nadia? or was it a complete surprise?

Hm, good question! I am not super confident in my answer, so my bet is "highly anticipated but not crazily so". Gainax was known but niche, having 'Otaku' success with as you mention Wings and Gunbuster...until Nadia: Secret of Blue Water came out in 1990. This would not have put Gainax per se on the map, as Toho and Group Tac were branded as the primary producers, Gainax as secondary, but it definitely put Hideaki Anno on the map as director. The show was wildly successful, aired in prime-time slots - which, fun fact, meant that its first season airing was interrupted due to breaking news about the onset of the First Gulf War - and Nadia herself became Best Girl in most of the Newtype/Animage style polls of the time until being dethroned by Sailor Mercury in 1992. Nadia was definitely still 'an anime', and it was a kids show in too many ways to be a real breakout. But it was the top of anime of its time, no debate.

Its success is what gave Anno the ability to finance Evangelion, and it meant he was also able to pull a lot of 'big talent' for branding purposes - which ofc was intentional, Anno is no fool. Hiring Usagi from Sailor Moon's voice actress Kotono Mitsuishi to be Misato for example, when Sailor Moon was the #1 anime of 1994, is certainly because of her talent but also because of her buzz, and he has a bunch of hires along those lines to make Eva the "oh man the best of the best are all here" kind of show.

(Again fun fact time - you prob know this one - he also tried to bring Kunihiko Ikuhara, Sailor Moon director, onto the animation staff, and as part of his tactics to woo him named Rei Ayanami after Sailor Mars, Ikuhara's favourite SM character that he famously cosplayed. Ikuhara was alas too busy with wrapping up his time on Sailor Moon and forming Be-papas to make Utena to spare the time)

All this meant that by the time Evangelion was getting ready for its Fall 1995 debut, the cover of the April 1995 issue of Newtype looked like this:

And hey, if you want some evidence of the buildup discussed, the first page of the cover feature starts off in 1990, with a discussion of the impact of Nadia:

Even here, once it transitions to discussing Evangelion, Anno is promising "something anime fans have never seen before". It was a common refrain in all the marketing material throughout 1995, that this show was going to be special. The manga adaption actually began print in February of 1995, as a hype builder. The Evangelion team was putting it all on the line.

Also I love that early concept art - the more gundam-esque pilot suits over the plugsuits would have absolutely been my jam, alas.

(This marketing material is more evidence against the mythical "mid-production pivot" theory that fans in the past surmised about Eva's intended story, but a topic for another time)

Still, this is just marketing - who wouldn't say your show will Change Everything, that is your job as a business! For all the inner-otaku hype and rep, Evangelion was definitely targeted at those otaku, and it wasn't marketed to an all-ages demo with wider appeal like Sailor Moon. Anno even remarks in the interview above it would be more of a 'cult hit' compared to Nadia. It had a Wednesday airing slot (at 18:30, not actually super late - another myth, it just had late night re-runs after its evening air slot), not a great time and definitely not a Saturday evening slot like Sailor Moon.

It was a show that instead grew over its airing and broke out of its slot and genre - its finale got audience ratings almost twice that of its premiere (though these numbers are hard to aggregate over different stations). Its about midway through its run that you start getting those "phenomenon of Evangelion" style articles, and when the ending hits the culture critics start jumping in as well and it becomes a true cultural event, and discussion of the show in mainstream magazines starts happening. That wasn't happening in 1995.

I wish I could say it all culminates with End of Evangelion being released and being the #1 film of the year and all that - but while it did well it got its clock absolutely cleaned by Princess Mononoke, which came out the same week. An honourable defeat at least!

Cosplay WIP: Part 1! A quick video on one of my WIPs, Fa Yuiry's civilian vest!

I'm literally so close to completing this vest, all I need is to work the bottom portion of the back of the vest, then sew it all up!

I measured myself for this and kinda winged the pattern, but I'm hoping that it'll fit snugly rather than loose. Crochet can be kinda finicky when it comes to stretch so I wouldn't be surprised if this came out looser than I expected >__>

As for the rest of the costume, I'm planning to just get the yellow turtleneck, ankle socks, and some black shorts for it.

As we celebrated international Woman's Day this week, we would like to spotlight one strong woman here on our Tumblr page. With a sad and heavy heart, Revy679, a fellow Lemony Shenanigans member and Gundam Wing enthusiast, unexpectedly passed away on January 10, 2023.

Whether or not you had ever crossed paths with her in our tiny fandom, it is important to acknowledge her passing because of her passion and many contributions to this community. Her love and support built JenJenGundamFan’s confidence to create Lemony Shenanigans in the first place. She was a talented writer for mostly 1xR but dabbled in other pairings. She had many passions and hobbies, such as anime (Sailor moon was her number one baby), movies, tv shows, football, animals, fashion, cosplay, and much more. She was a sweet, caring soul and will forever be missed by her family and friends. As sad as it is to lose anyone, we think moments like these remind us to appreciate life in all its complexity, whether your passing moments be sad, random, joyous, humbling, hilarious, or chaotic. We encourage everyone to take the time to reflect on the people you have met in and outside of this fandom, whether they are still in your life or not, and to be thankful that your moments with them happened in the first place. Lemony Shenanigans 2023 will proceed as scheduled. The last thing Revy would’ve wanted was for us to stall anything on her behalf—especially anything lemony-related. Revy’s Role in LS isn’t over. She has now been memorialized as a Lemony Shenanigans participant in spirit, adding one more to the total number of people participating each year. This is our biggest year yet, with 40 people participating! We are so grateful and humbled that so many people enjoy this silly little event, and we’ll keep doing so, bringing the Gundam Wing community together each year. Please continue to care for yourselves and each other, and don’t forget to laugh often. As Revy would say, “Go in Gundam.”

I have his cassock shirt done. I didn't know what I was doing since I couldn't get an official cassock pattern so I had to fake it til ya make it kind of thing. Includes fake turtleneck to save on layers.

Rhythm Generation

It's been 5 years since we released the first of what would become known as the "Rythm Generation" Gundam Wing fanzine project. For about 4 years, the fandom came together to share some really phenomenal fan creations - art, fic, meta, traditional crafts, and more.

Although the project has ended, I did want to share past publications for those who missed out. Each one of the zines was a labor of love, and I want to again thank everyone who participated--as moderators and contributors.

2019 Rhythm Generation (released May 4, 2019): A fandom zine for the Gundam Wing After Colony universe and a celebration of the fandom that has been 20+ years and counting. It featured written and graphical fandom work which provided depth and breadth to the AC universe and the world of Gundam Wing. The collection included a wide array of world building meta, articles, art, and graphics focused on science, politics, society, and art from the fandom’s resident experts and enthusiasts which highlight the creative dynamism that underpins the AC universe. There were several charities for this publication.

2020 Rhythm Generation (released April 7, 2020): An unofficial 25th anniversary fandom zine for Gundam Wing and is a creative celebration of the After Colony universe and the fandom family itself.  The anthology showcased a wealth of fandom content in celebration of the show’s 25th anniversary: from fanfic and fanart to cosplay and gunpla to meta, tech specs, and fandom history.  The project included both a core zine—Shooting Stars—with a generalized focused on the fandom and a bonus zine—The Measure of a Year—which featured content centered around the crowd-sourced theme of “Seasons.” The chosen charity for this publication was War Child 

2021 Rhythm Generation (released October 1, 2021): The 2021 Rhythm Generation Gundam Wing fandom zine—East of the Sun, West of the Moon—featured canon-compliant, canon-divergent, and alternative universe explorations and retellings of classic fairytales, folklore, mythology, vast epics, urban legends, and even cryptids. The anthology included a wide variety of both SFW and NSFW fan content—so tread carefully!—to include stories, art, and other fanwork. The 2021 chosen charity was World Literacy Foundation

2023 Rhythm Generation (released July 1, 2023): The 2023 Rhythm Generation Gundam Wing fandom zine returned to the two-part structure celebrating canon and alternate universe fanworks. The main zine—Battle Scars—centered on the Gundam Wing characters as they move on with their lives after a major event. The bonus zine—Kitchen Cabinets—featured fanworks with a tasty twist plus sprites and recipes as digital swag! The chosen charity was The Hunger Project
