Soul of Chogokin GX-113 Gundam Tryon 3
Considering Gundam Build Fighters Try isn't to most popular season of its subline, it's very easy to argue that Tryon 3 is the most popular aspect of that season... except maybe Fumina. Anyway, the Mobile Suits of GBFT were very Super Robot in performance and combat, but Tryon 3 took that to the next step by also referencing them with its aesthetics. Tryon 3 was also easily recognizable as being based off the ZZ Gundam, while most other Gunpla had more original designs which was a common complaint among fans at the time. But despite its popularity, it has only had ever gotten that original kit and a few hard-to-get color and plastic variants, so to have its second iteration be the full-on high-end Super Robot treatment is a welcome surprise.
The Good: While I've heard a ton of good things about the line, this is my first foray into SoC. As the name suggests, there are a lot of metal parts throughout, primarily in the legs but quite a bit is used to reinforce joints. As such, it is very heavy and very solid. It also has a good range of posability, though gentle pressure should be applied when moving the tougher metal joints.
As with the original, Tryon 3 is capable of splitting into Riku Tryon, Sora Tryon, and Umi Tryon. They all carry over the posability they grant to Tryon 3, with Riku Tryon having decently posable legs in addition. The transformation is also very fun, with no parts forming like with the original. Riku Tryon's head is on a dual armature that swings over the chest, Umi Tryon's head fits snugly into the chest cavity, and Sora Tryon's legs completely invert on a set of sliding rails to become the standard Gundam legs. It's all very impressive, and not at all complicated, which speaks wonders to its engineering. It even has added places to store the Sora head and Umi tail which become its sword, and the wings which are usually discarded.
I'll also say, when combined, it feels like the size they portray it as in the show, closer to 1/100 scale than 1/144. Despite a lot of HG kits declaring they're 1/144 scale, that doesn't always match up in practice, with kits like those from Wing or units like Mobile Doll Sarah or May being bigger than they should be, or in this case HG Tryon 3 feeling small, though its size did sometimes feel like it was on a slider.
Tumblr media
Apart from a bevy of alternate hands, Tryon 3 does comes with a number of bonus parts, most of which are beam effects. It comes with an enlarged head crest to wield for its iconic Boomerang Stagger, beam effects for both its Hyper Beam Sabers and an over-foot-long one for Hyper Minovsky Chohoken, and propulsion effects with stand capability for Armed Booster. It also comes with a set of two parts so you can depict it pulling Chohoken from the Liger's mouth, with the beam piece alone doubling as a Choho Pressure effect piece.
The included stand is also nice. While it doesn't have undercarriage storage, like with a lot of The Gattai toys, it does try to remain very pristine in appearance. You can separate it into three parts to display the three individual units separately, remove the name plate, and all the armatures you can attach hook onto the existing Riku and Umi plugs, or a cleverly hidden hole in the center of the stand.
The Bad: There's some general tightness and fragility to worry about, though it points out most instances in the instructions. The sword is also quite heavy to the point that it recommends you use one of the armatures to prop it up, though you have to do so with the unreliable clamp arms. I do wish there was some way to plug the stand into the sword if they knew this was going to be a thing. The first time I attached the V-Fin I was worried something was going to snap, though nothing thankfully did.
The biggest issue I had was the hands. They're slightly rubberized, and very tight, so they took quite a bit of force to put on the wrists for the first time. I ended up taking the arms off by the elbow to get the leverage I needed to put them on. They get slightly easier the more you do it, but they always require a bit more force than I'd like.
Look, this is a very high-end, high-spec piece. While I have heard of a few fumbles in SoC's past, this seems like a release where they did their homework. It probably helps that it's not trying to do anything too crazy, apart from the leg inversion? Treat it like what it's worth and you will see no trouble; time, patience, and a gentle hand.
Overall, it's great, but expensive. You're definitely getting your money's worth, but the question is if you want to spend that money in the first place. But now I'm kinda sad that this is a solo piece; unlike a lot of Super Robots, Tryon 3 is standalone and doesn't and combo buddies. Except... SD Tryon 3 does have Luna Tryon.

Gundam Build Fighters Amazing Try Short Story
Long post incoming
Takeshi Iori was operating the Gunpla Battle device that day as well. For someone like him, who devotes his life to the popularization of Gunpla, it has become an indispensable part of his day. He sometimes stops by areas where it doesn’t exist, but even when he does, he trains himself through mental battles. Battling without fail every day. The absolute condition for honing your skills. He held a Gunpla in front of the battle machine. It was an RX-78-2 with additional equipment. It was the “Perfect Gundam” that he had decided to use for training today. Just before setting it down to start, the machine began to run on its own. “What…?”
A battlefield spread out in front of him. It was outer space, and there was no way to turn it off. A Gunpla was launched at the same time. It was another RX-78-2 but equipped with never before seen equipment. Takeshi’s eyes widen as he looks at it. In outer space, on the other side of the battlefield, the operator of the Gunpla was vague. “It can’t be…” He saw an image in the silhouette, but that person shouldn’t be there. In his fantasies, Takeshi has fought with fighters who don’t exist in real life, such as anime characters. But it shouldn’t be real. If the person in the silhouette is who he thought it was, then this might be a dream or a delusion.
“But it’s funny!” It’s funny, yes, that Gunpla is Freedom. Takeshi also set his Perfect Gundam onto the device and went out into the battlefield. He fired his shoulder cannon at the enemy’s Gundam the moment he came out, but it was easily avoided. “Are you… worthy of using it?” “I see. You have the right to say that to whoever uses the Perfect. You’ll see for yourself!” Before Takeshi could finish his sentence, the enemy fires a beam rifle. Holding a beam javelin in his other hand, he generated three beam sabers from his shield, ready to fight. In other words, it was the answer to Takeshi’s own words. “I’ll borrow your chest, sir!” Takeshi closes the distance. The enemy’s Beam Javelin has a long reach and a high energy output, making it too dangerous to approach. But he can’t pull it. “I got it!” “I won’t let you do that!”
The Javelin strikes the Perfect’s shield. Takeshi strikes back with the beam saber, but the original shield equipped on the enemy’s arm blocks the strike. It was a fast reaction. Both of them drew their respective weapons and fought to their heart’s content. “Well done.” “I can fight someone like you… That’s the best experience I can have as a fighter. It’s only natural I did my best.” Both of them attacked and were attacked many times. A clash of infinite offense and defense. “Ha…” When he came to, Takeshi had passed out in front of the machine. He had fought to the limit of his mental strength. “Maybe that battle was a dream… or…” Takeshi laughed. It didn’t matter to him whether the battle was real or a dream. He had a fulfilling battle. That was enough for him.

Having speed watched gundam build fighters try i can definitely say that the problem with try is that it doesnt have a fucking plot. Not even in the sense that light heartened non serious nonsense like this usually is, where the plot is nearly non existant. no. that'd be too much for try.
to put it another way, try is basically a loosely associated collection of character moments, story beats and emotional drama in the trench coat of a story, interspliced with nonsense popcorn action beats that lull the brain into a temporary coma. and then you wake up in a cold sweat as the awful main characters screech romance drama or weird try hard shonen nonsense well anyone actually interesting hangs out in the background for their turn with the rival introduction pileup, as the same song plays over and over.
ITS NOT A PLEASENT EXPERIENCE

SBG-E01 Shin Burning Gundam
So let's continue our look at how Metaverse could have better handled the returning characters from the previous series. And for Fighters Try, it was handled pretty well. Sekai is very on-point, and because his story was the latest in his timeline, his design fits, too. I do wish his gi had a little more flare to it to fit the other costumes we see in Divers/Metaverse, but him repping his school works from a character perspective.
Fumina's fine. She's mostly there for fan service, being the only character to get an actual redesign. And she feels like a fan service character, which, yes, they used her for fan service in her original series a little bit, but she was a much deeper and interesting character than just that, and that's very much lacking from this interpretation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Kit: It's just the Kamiki Burning Gundam again, but with a new shoulder, hip skirt, and backpack. Apart from the horns, you can basically rebuild the entire kit again. Still, the new parts are neat, and the new effect parts are cool.
The Details: Man, I'm just now noticing I forgot to clean one of the knees... Anyway, apart from panel lining and black fill, I used metallic blue for the eyes and peripheral cameras, as well as on the areas underneath the translucent blue parts. This is in contrast to what I did with the Exceed Galaxy where I used the red on the underside of the parts themselves. I also used gold, black, and metallic blue on the the two swords.
Overall, while it isn't an especially interesting upgrade, the new parts are still really cool, and another way of getting this kit that's kinda old and doesn't get reprinted as much. It's not really worth it if you already have a Kamiki Burning, but if you don't, then it's a perfectly fine kit with a very fun backpack. The backpack is very cool.

Shin SD Gundam Gaiden Knight Gundam Maryuu Zero no Kishiden: Extra Thread
Pretty much this is just like the Kikoushin Densetsu one I did. But there will be a bit extra this time.
Tumblr media
Let's start from the "beginning". Zero's father, Falco Gundam was one of the original members of the Knights of the Round Table. He had a sort of rivalry with King I. One day, he, Conan, and Javor were sent to the region of Granada to investigate strange happenings.
Tumblr media
Said strange happening was a random and intense storm that appeared in Granada. Fuhrer Zatarion from the Command Chronicles series also appeared, forcing Conan to remember that he's Command Gundam. Conan and Javor protect Zero while Falco engages Zatarion with Dragoon.
Tumblr media
In the end, Zatarion took massive damage, but Falco was out of strength. Conan/Commando goes after Zatarion, never to return. Falco gives Zero the Thunder Sword and tells him to escape from the storm with Javor. Around this time, the Illusion Emperor reveals himself and captures Falco.
Tumblr media
Turns out that the Illusion Emperor had attached himself to Javor beforehand. Weakened and unarmed, Falco had no chance and was easily overwhelmed. He was later turned into Vice Gundam and the remaining parts of Zatarion that had broken off during their battle were used to make his Machine Soldier.
Tumblr media
"You'll be living alone from now on, but this Thunder Sword will guide you..."
Ultimately, the young Zero was the only one left standing when the storm cleared.
"Where...do I go? What...do I do? *sob* FATHER!!!"
Tumblr media
This next part covers the GB game. Despite being directly given the sword, Zero cannot properly use it yet. This is because the Thunder Clan laws emphasize the power of oneself and has several candidates fight for the position of "Inheritor". In this case, there are three others.
Tumblr media
These three candidates are Knight Sandias, Knight Mezaldan, and Knight V-Square. Zero battles each candidate 1v1. The loser has whatever skills they've acquired to that point sealed.
To put it bluntly, Sandias and Mezaldan are... kinda assholes and V-Square is the only one of them who is actually a good person.
Zero beats Sandias and Mezaldan, but then he takes on V-Square…and loses.
Tumblr media
However, it turns out that the "Inheritor" is not the one who wins the battle, but the one who the Thunder Sword chooses. This is because the system apparently chooses the one whose genetic makeup closely matches the original clan's founder, Draguna Sieg. (I think?)
Tumblr media
As a result, Zero becomes the successor and V-Square is rejected.
However, V-Square has the most hilariously chill reaction to being rejected as a legendary successor and becomes the priest of the Thunder Clan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mecha Basis + Lore
Interestingly, Zero Gundam himself is currently the only SD Gundam protag to not be based on a Gundam, but is instead based on the Showkew from Victory Gundam. Knight Victory and V-Square instead are based on the protag unit of Victory (Victory and V2 accordingly).
Tumblr media
This segways into our next subject, the Illusion Emperor.
It's not mentioned in the manga, but his full name is Illusion Emperor Assault Buster. Yup, as in V2 Gundam Assault Buster. This is the only case in SD Gundam where an enemy MS is the hero and the hero's MS is the villain.
Tumblr media
Apparently, the reason for this is the crew was forbidden from making Victory's MSs SD until the latter half of the series. They used hidden bases, but didn't go all-out until later.
Star Wars and Fist of the North Star were also used as inspiration for the work. Which means, yes, Vice Gundam is a Darth Vader reference.
Tumblr media
Back to Assault Buster, his original identity was Knight V2, the heir to the Storm Sword. Unlike the Thunder Clan, the Storm Clan places emphasis on fighting together, which is why there are multiple Inheritors that exist at once. The current one has the title "Storm Commander".
Tumblr media
While he was the Storm Commander, Knight V2 was described as powerful and full of ambition. However, he one day suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Falco Gundam, which utterly shattered his heart.
This lead him to obsess over becoming more powerful…
Tumblr media
This eventually lead him into the mirror world, where he met the Zanscare Clan. In exchange for joining with the Zanscare Clan, Knight V2 was given immense power and became Illusion Emperor Assault Buster.
And became utterly horrifying in the process.
Tumblr media
Similarly to Kikoushin Densetsu, Knight Gundam Monogatari also uses non-Gundam bases for some of its mechs. For example, Knight Victory's machine soldier is based on Galient (from Panzer World Galient) and Beast King GoLion (from GoLion).
Tumblr media
Metanall is based on Azolba Zee from Panzer World Galient.
Epco 94 is based on Vega from Genma Wars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While never scene in the manga, V-Square's machine soldier, Sky Paladin, is based on Wingal Zee from Panzer World Galient.
Tumblr media
Cameo in Gundam Build Fighters Try
Most English-speakers probably recognize Zero Gundam from episode 12 of Gundam Build Fighters Try, "Fly to the Future" as a Gunpla used by Lady Kawaguchi.
There are actually a few small references to Knight Gundam Monogatari in this episode.
(Yes, I know this same episode also has a few SD Gundam Force references in its impact frames due to the series having its 10th Anniversary, but this is a Knight Gundam Monogatari Thread, not a SD Gundam Force Thread)
Tumblr media
To start off… When Lady Kawaguchi first shows off Zero in the episode, he is wearing a cloak. This is likely a reference to one of the Arc 1 Prologue cards for Knight Gundam Monogatari.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MARYUU AWAKEN!!
Did you happen to catch something? Like did you see something? Don't worry, we'll go into that.
Tumblr media
It's Mars Dragoon! There is an impact frame of Mars Dragoon!!
Tumblr media
While not exact wording, before finishing off Fumina's Winning Gundam, Lady Kawaguchi even references Zero Gundam's catchphrase, "Return to "zero"!" (“無”(ゼロ)に帰れ!, "zero" ni kaere!).
Here, she says "Zero ni kaerinasai!", which is a more feminine version of the phrase.
Tumblr media
After finishing off Winning Gundam, there is one more impact frame. This one has Zero's father, Falco Gundam, in his Holy Dragon Knight form. This is the form he fought Zatarion in, actually. You can see this scene in motion below.
