A list of plants and their medicinal uses, from “The Complaynt of Scotland”, printed in 1549.
The “Complaynt of Scotland” was a propaganda piece published during the Anglo-Scottish war now known as the Rough Wooing, but it is also particularly interesting as a record of popular culture. As well as this list of herbs, the anonymous author also included lists of songs, dances, and stories which were popular in sixteenth century Scotland. You can read more about the history of the “Complaynt” here, but I thought it was worth quoting this passage in particular.
Although the information given about the medicinal uses of many of these herbs is not, to the best of my knowledge, particularly unusual, and I’m also not entirely convinced that some of these plants were actually native to Scotland during this period, I do think it’s an interesting example of the kind of basic botanical knowledge that a reasonably well-educated Scotsman in would have been able to acquire from both personal experience and books during the sixteenth century.
I’ve provided a loose translation of the Scots below, primarily using the Old Scots Dictionary for some of the more difficult flower names and ailments. The version of the text which I took this quote from (edited by James A.H. Murray) can be found here, but a more up to date edition also exists, published by the Scottish Text Society in 1979.
"Then I departed from that company and I entered into an unmown meadow, the which abounded with all sorts of wholesome flowers, grasses, and herbs most convenient for medicine. In the first, I saw a herb called beard [of] Aaron, which was [a] good remedy for haemorrhoids of the fundament [1]. I saw wormwood, which was good for a feeble stomach, and sorrel, which was good for the black jaundice. I saw many green sedges, which are good for provoking the flowers of women [2]. I saw the water lily, which is a remedy against gonorrhoea. I saw tansy, which is good for purging the kidneys and aniseed which consumes the wind of the stomach. I saw mugwort, which is good for the suffocation of a woman's child's bed [3]. I saw bettony, the extract of which is [a] remedy for a sore head. I saw beets, that are good against constipation. I saw borage, that is good for strengthening the heart. I saw chamomile, which is good for a scabby mouth. I saw hemp, which coagulates the flux of the sperm. I saw maiden hair, of the which a syrup made of it is remedy against the infection of the spleen. I saw celandine, which is good for helping the sight of the eyes, and cypresses, which are good for the fluxes of the belly. I saw coriander, which is good for an old cough. I saw fennel, which slays the worms of the belly I saw fumitory, which tempers a hot liver. I saw broom, which provokes a person to vomit old phlegm. I saw rashes, which provoke men to sleep. I saw hyssop, which is good for purging congealed phlegm from the lungs. I saw many other herbs in those fresh fragrant fields."
[1] The butt
[2] Menstruation
[3]- Apparently, hysteria of the womb
* It goes without saying I am not encouraging anyone to try these remedies at home, I don’t have that kind of knowledge or authority

This was a really good week of listening for me! Idk what it is but I have like a really really hard time sitting down and watching movies and shows in general (i think its mostly because i hate the feeling of secondhand embarrassment and will literally just stop watching before the embarrassing thing happens) but not this week haha! Also really happy to diversify the dialects/people I am listening too. Oljekåt is especially great because its about the environment, specifically the campaign(s) for Norway to divest from oil, and the host is from Stavanger. I dont think she always speaks stavangersk because one time she was reading something and she was literally like fuck it I have to read it in my dialect haha but that's good for me. It's a little harder but just requires a little more effort is all.
Anyways, even though I put a lot of hours into listening this week, I would also like to balance that out with everything else and not keep sacrificing one thing for another. So I will get back to journaling everyday and do a better job at reviewing vocab while simultaneously making a much greater effort to practice speaking outside of italki sessions because that is the area that needs the most help by far.
Watched Winx Club x11
reviewed vocabulary words 1-100 from Learn Serbian
Still pretty unorganized with Serbian but I have been averaging 1.5 episodes a day of Winx and I am okay with that tbh. I can only really make inferences of what's happening based on tone and body language etc BUT I can pretty clearly hear distinct words, quite a few I actually recognize, and also the conjugation of certain names so that's something. I haven't quite committed myself to picking up my textbook again but maybe I will this week.
