it had been so long since i made a proper progress log which is unfortunate for me because i had much more to show for the weeks i didn't post lol. anyways, finally finished Her På Berget thank god. after reading the series basically back to back [Pa Vei, Stein På Stein, Her På Berget] i am extremely tired of textbooks and their very boring, very repetitive structure. Norsk Grammatikk is a textbook but its different in structure and I think a really good tool for me to review grammar at this stage in my learning.
very proud of myself for not making a complete idiot of myself during my latest italki session which was my first in almost a month (because there are literally no tutors available in my timezone and my usual guy was all booked..). i think writing 'everyday' has really helped and also reading Short Stories in Norwegian. the book is on the easier side for me BUT i think its silly and fun and i think reading 'literature' is a good way to get varying sentence structures/words/phrases that you cannot get from the textbooks i have been reading.
this month i made the goals of (1) finishing Norsk Grammatikk (2) journaling everyday and (3) completing at least 5 exercises from the grammar book. i should probably add something concrete for my speaking skills as well....hoping for a nice productive and uneventful month this month!

This was a really good week of listening for me! Idk what it is but I have like a really really hard time sitting down and watching movies and shows in general (i think its mostly because i hate the feeling of secondhand embarrassment and will literally just stop watching before the embarrassing thing happens) but not this week haha! Also really happy to diversify the dialects/people I am listening too. Oljekåt is especially great because its about the environment, specifically the campaign(s) for Norway to divest from oil, and the host is from Stavanger. I dont think she always speaks stavangersk because one time she was reading something and she was literally like fuck it I have to read it in my dialect haha but that's good for me. It's a little harder but just requires a little more effort is all.
Anyways, even though I put a lot of hours into listening this week, I would also like to balance that out with everything else and not keep sacrificing one thing for another. So I will get back to journaling everyday and do a better job at reviewing vocab while simultaneously making a much greater effort to practice speaking outside of italki sessions because that is the area that needs the most help by far.
Watched Winx Club x11
reviewed vocabulary words 1-100 from Learn Serbian
Still pretty unorganized with Serbian but I have been averaging 1.5 episodes a day of Winx and I am okay with that tbh. I can only really make inferences of what's happening based on tone and body language etc BUT I can pretty clearly hear distinct words, quite a few I actually recognize, and also the conjugation of certain names so that's something. I haven't quite committed myself to picking up my textbook again but maybe I will this week.

So, this month I decided not to ‘produced any* output’. Similarly, I am doing a pretty detailed review of grammar by reading Norsk Grammatikk. I think I will make a post about it at the end of the month but for now I will just say I am experimenting. In general, I’m happy with the work I did this week but I am already aware of things I would like to do different next week. For example, I would like to be a little more organized in the types of exercises I am doing. The number is less important to me as long as I am working on different things (i.e. vocabulary, listening, grammar, etc.).
I dont think I will ever document my time on duolingo or using anki or how much i listen to music..but there was a lot of that as well. IDK what it was with me and children’s shows and movies this week (especially considering the ‘adult’ shows I have started and not finished) but its nice! CN is great because there are no subtitles so I can actually count that as listening as opposed to reading. Also, I will definitely incorporate more readings outside of my textbook.

this week was not as productive as it would have liked (and i had no idea how much i was neglecting vocab this week which....is like the easiest thing for me to do but i digress). idk if these past couple weeks is that 'learning plateau' because tbh it feels like everything is not only not improving, but also getting worse lol. it's actually a terrible feeling and i *know* i'm not regressing but geez louise some days it really really feels like it...anyways, i am glad to discover UiS has a pretty active youtube channel so I got to listen to more Stavangersk which is nice AND i did my first yoga practice in norwegian which was also nice (exercise wise but also in the fact that i could follow relatively well). i am definitely behind on my goal to finish Norsk Grammatikk so I hope to read more and do exercises for the accompanying chapters.
i think journaling everyday has been really nice but i always wait until nighttime (so i can like write about what happened in the day mostly) but sometimes i wait too late and im too tired to commit to more than a paragraph lol. so this week i will change my approach for writing and see where that goes!

This is the first time in a lonnnnnnng time i am 'seriously' engaging with serbian again! mostly because my partner has this timeline that ideally (corona notwithstanding), we would be in Serbia in this fall/winter. I dont expect to be fluent by that time lol and traveling this year also seems like a reach BUT i would really like to be able to have some tools in order to communicate with his parents who do not speak english. i'm mostly going to focus on input but also i bought thus '2000 key vocabularies' book which i never even thought about for norwegian and tbh dont know how i feel about them but we will see how it goes! hoping to have a better idea of my approach this week for studying again because this week was very random but gotta start again somewhere!

This week was kinda messy again and I ended up doing most of my work on the weekends when I would prefer to have it spread out during the week. I was getting a little (a lot) frustrated with the exercises towards the end because sometimes it feels like I should already know certain things or it takes me "too long" to complete a certain task. Going forward, I do plan on keeping to my current textbook reading schedule but once I finish HPG, I think I will take a break from textbook(s) until I get more organized and familiar with all the material from the past three textbooks.
My goal for this week will be to finish the first section of Hombabo Og Jeg and note all the vocabulary I marked from it (7 chapters). I already have my question(s) planned for my italki session on Friday but hopefully I will get at least one of the chapters for this weeks textbook reading done before then. I general I think I did good work this week but as usual, hoping for a better week next week.

This was a decent week! I still need to make a schedule for the weekends because I kinda just do whatever and so far thats okay but more structure wouldn’t hurt. I had a really nice a-ha moment finishing Kapittel 8 of Stein På Stein; in that moment i felt like i was really getting somewhere. it just felt so natural to read about ‘norway in the old days’. I haven’t decided a number of exercises to do per chapter but i will keep prioritizing listening exercises because that will always be the area where I need the most work i think. In general, my textbook reading is going pretty well and faster than I thought but instead of rushing through it, I would like to read more news articles and books and keep to my original plan of three chapters a week.
I always read aloud when I read anything in norwegian and i count that towards my speaking (never in full) because i think its really important to get a feel for the words. I also use this website (literally the most realistic computer generated voices i found thus far) to check my pronunciation on words I absolutely have no idea how to pronounce but this is not usually my main goal the first time around...I think I will make a post about reading and pronunciation and this website soon..but what i am trying to say is pronunciation is not my concern when my focus is reading comprehension. Hoping for a good week next week!
P.S If anyone watched ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ and would like to discuss please lmk because i....was not a fan........but would love to hear other opinions. also if you didnt see it and are looking for a recommendation to do so, you will not find it here lmfao.

My main accomplishment this week was finishing Stein På Stein albeit a day or two off from my schedule. I unfortunately did not do any homework assignments for the last three chapters..Considering my schedule to finish Her På Berget at 1.5 chapters a week, I will dedicate more time to the workbook practices. In February I will (re)organize a bit as I start taking italki lessons again. I have a session scheduled for this Friday and will use the coming days to ‘study’ and ‘prepare’ for ‘something’.
This month I would like to (a) finish Norsk Grammatikk, (b) finish Hombabo Og Jeg and (c) have at least four italki sessions, about one a week. Also I will officially reintegrate Serbian back into my schedule so I am more inclined to stick to my plans. In general, more input should be happening going forward. Hoping for a good month! Something about the 1st of the month falling on a Monday is extremely satisfying to me..

better late than never i suppose!
Norwegian: i cannot remember for the life of me what i did this week but for the most part the 'content' is the same but the frequency varies. content being: duolingo, podcasts, interviews, etc. i am trying to write everyday but as we see from this chart, that did not happen haha. i can say, unfortunately, that i have not scheduled another italki session since the first one... i am in a very weird transitionary period right now so its a little difficult to plan and budget but! it seems like i will be able to afford weekly sessions very soon.
** in the very near future, i plan to be more detailed with these logs and more structured in my posts in general. i guess right now i am kinda taking notes, and planning my 'perfect study schedule' for the next several months as i seriously get back to working towards my goal(s). but for now this is fine, i still have time :)**

This week got fucked up because I ‘randomly’ decided to binge Steven Universe....no regrets to that really at all lol. I never watched it in full before and my thought was the sooner i finish the series, the sooner I can get back to work lol. The main thing is I am still on track to finish my textbook this week and begin Her På Berget next week. Next week (this week) I will be sure to get back to regularly reading my grammar textbook. I hope to finish it by next week. Going to be busy this coming week as I want to get all the vocab sorted and do some review before I start the new textbook and start booking Italki sessions again.
This week I also decided to commit myself to listening to as much Serbian as possible (passive learning almost entirely). I have this real fear, like to the point where it makes me want to throw up lol, of going to Serbia with my partner and being so lost and disconnected from everyone and everything around me and just not having the best time because of it. I dont expect to become fluent or anything by the time I get there but I would really like to be able to hold a basic conversation with his parents and idk just not feel like a total burden???? So Agelast (on Youtube) is one of my partner’s favorite podcasters and his videos are on avergae 1.3 hours...I’m going to break that up over the course of a week and keep listening to the folk and rap playlists my partner made for me :’) probably start a show and watch some movies but no plans to get back to the textbook just yet....

Not my best week by any means but I was able to stick to my reading schedule by finishing sections 3 and 4 of Her På Berget. However, I did not finish the homework assignments for those sections nor did I list and define highlighted vocabulary so it feels like i didn’t really accomplish this goal of finishing those 2 chapters this week because there is much more to that than actually just reading...I will have to play catch up this week but I will stick to my current schedule.
I had two italki sessions this week; one of which was with a new teacher. He showed me a lot of great resources I had never heard of/used before so that was very much appreciated. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like I will be able to have a session with either teacher because (a) my usual guy is all booked and (b) i am also kinda busy??? it works out in a sense so i guess i will take this week then as an opportunity to catch up and be super prepared and talkative for my scheduled session the following week!
Honestly, I think I have a pretty decent schedule for myself I just really need to get back to sticking to the timeframes which easier said then done BUT i am happy that i make an effort to do *something* everyday! Planning for a more consistent/better week despite writing this on the 22nd and not having much done lol. today was by no means bad but tomorrow will be even better.

this is like super late lol but it was my first time using a log and i wanted to share it. firstly, i would like to thank @nordic-language-love for making a post explaining the concept. but also i really really like having a delineation between productivity days (i.e. X vs /) bc it allows me to be a little kinder to myself. because yes, it’d be nice to have full productivity every day of the week but thats not possible. and there are days were studying is done; maybe not a lot but those days still count.
Norwegian: so i cant remember what specifically i did these days but it is worth commenting that making a log made me realize how little writing i have been doing! so if anything i will make a much bigger effort to write (and longer texts at that). hoping to keep talking to my dear norwegian friend silje who is so excited and helpful to me with my speaking and grammar. but also hoping to start some italki sessions so i (a) don’t bother her and (b) more practice. just started stein på stein this week (wooo) with the workbook so im proud and excited about that!
Serbian: this was like an AMAZING week for Serbian for me hahahaha. i absolutely do prioritize norwegian over serbian but when i do spend the time really engaging with the language, i’m reminded how beautiful it is and how excited i am to be learning it. i was frank with myself from the start though and remind myself this is not my main priority, but im excited for when i get a little more time (aka better at norwegian) and can dedicate more of myself to learning and appreciating it.
Still listening to the Let’s Learn Croatian Podcast which is always very short and very simple but its helpful and its funny and i enjoy it. still using let’s learn serbian and doing some translations. also i talk to my partner more and more each day in serbian and ask him to tell me about his day twice haha: once in english, then in serbian. very little but its the the little things right?
Personal/Other: lol when i say i am going THROUGH it, trust. but yes i am still taking classes, concerned with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and i recently became a GIS intern for the environmental nonprofit i worked for in college and i am learning a lot and thankful for the experience. next month will be very busy as i really crackdown on those master’s program applications and HOPEFULLY getting on track lol so i’m not super fucked for finals mid december. i dont plan to make logs for other aspects of my life bc i dont feel the need but i will hopefully be more consistent with these posts in the future lol.

I started off pretty solid this week but got a little lazy during the weekend but thats okay because next week will be better. Next week I will also start reading two chapters of HPB so I will need to make sure I allocate enough time to do all the homework assignments for each section. So far I havent had any major issues with understanding the readings and being able to check my work and ask my teacher questions really helps fill in the gaps! My session this week went okay! I already feel a lot more comfortable speaking despite still not being in better place..I know I say it every week when I make these posts but i would really like to read more outside material! I plan to start reading more before going to sleep which I think is just a good idea in general (as opposed to being on my phone or something dumb).

This week was just okay. I am hoping to get back on schedule this week so I can get more things done in general like more grammar review, working out, and job applications etc etc. This week I really feel like my listening comprehension is at its best but somehow I feel like my reading is not as good as it was as recent as last week...I cannot really explain this but its a little frustrating but i know i should be reading more outside of my textbook. First chapter of Her På Berget was fine but and I think I set decent pacing for it. Had my first italki session (in a long time) with a new teacher and I am super excited and happy with our plans for me to reach my goal(s). I think I will make a separate log for sessions as they happen but for now I will say it was really that I could share my goals and not be questioned or discouraged in them.
Anyways, HJEM TIL JUL! Overall, I really enjoyed it! Two main things I didn’t like: the three Black characters were either written off or written poorly and that bothers me...also its funny that everyone was in love with Johanne but like what does she even like? what are her hobbies? everyones like omg youre the coolest person I know but like *we* don’t know what that means lmfao..anyways i am happy with the ending in general and never thought I would be rooting for the fuckboy but here we are...On a completely different note, Malcom and Marie was so boring. i read reviews and comments literally stating just that but I just watched it to read the subtitles in Norwegian so yeah lol would not recommend

Norwegian: i am happy with the work i was able to do last week! im still thinking about the ideal study schedule for me but i think this past week gave me a better idea of what i would like to do and how to better approach those areas i really need to work on (i.e. speaking). i really want to immerse myself more with the language so I started watching more interviews with my favorite artists on the P3X youtube channel. i am aiming to have one (1) italki session a week and force myself to read aloud even more. i kinda neglected my textbook this week but i plan to do some more work this week with. I have the workbook for this book (unlike the first book I used) and i am still trying to figure out how best to use it in tandem with my readings..any suggestions would be very appreciated!
Personal/Other: i think i did a good job this week being consistent in all areas and not solely on any one thing. I applied to eight (8)? jobs last week and i am proud of myself for doing that but i know i have to keep going and THAT’S the hard part. almost the end of the semester for me and im kinda just floating along but i will use this break we have next week to catch up before i start seriously thinking about my final project. gathering the final documents for the master’s programs due on the 1st and finalizing my motivational letter(s)...trying to stay active and hopeful during this very weird time. hoping for an equally as productive week this week!

another weird and hectic week...but i am happy that i was able to do a little bit of something each day despite *everything* being horrible. by the end of the month year i would like to have a more organized goal/better schedule for exactly how i am going to continue my studies. but until i finish this semester, this is okay for now.
Norwegian: so for me, ‘vocabulary’ can consist of many different things but i primarily refer to duolingo when i talk about vocabulary here. i applaud the people who keep track of the exact areas in the tree they complete or refresh each week. in general i use the ‘Hover method’ and i think that is the most beneficial way to go about using the app.
also highlights of this week were listening to my usual podcast and adding more NRK (politics) to my listening. i wrote a short bit for temauke this week about d*nald t*ump based on an NRK show and listened to a sort of reaction/recap of the el*ction on another NRK show on sunday. slowly working my way through stein på stein but also trying to make some flashcards from the words i missed in the previous textbook first...yes i am as unorganized as i sound lmfao.
Serbian: honestly i did absolutely nothing for serbian this week and honestly this has been the typical for me [besides briefly speaking with my partner]. again, i hope to have a more concrete idea of exactly how i will continue studying soon because i dont like the neglect but i also know i really want to spend all my free time on norwegian. i will come back to this later. i have not given up yet.
Personal/Other: decided to drop one class for my sanity so school has been a little less stressful i guess. actively working on master’s applications; theyre all spread out in terms of due dates which is a little annoying but i believe i only have 2 due on 1 dec. i have been following a chloe ting workout for the past 19 days and i feel very good about that! other than that, this pandemic shit (or rather people’s selfishness and stupidity) is very taxing and i am so tired and angry. it still is really hard for me to focus most of the time because there is so much happening everday and it is exhausting. hoping for a productive and not so completely awful week next week!

I have listened to every podcast that Karense has made which is both sad and cool, mostly sad though because now I have to wait instead of being able to listen whenever but there are many podcasts so I will be okay lol. I spent most of Monday and Tuesday preparing for an interview I had on Wednesday and then spent the rest of Wednesday, after the interview, being sad the interview did not go well but that’s okay! The position was not for me and it is comforting being able to acknowledge that and be okay with that even if it took me a day to get there.
One thing I should give myself credit for is for noticeable improvement in my listening comprehension skills. Despite not being able to articulate myself as clearly and eloquently as I would like, I can understand literally 99.999% of my italki teacher’s words and I always learn something new which is vital to that eloquent articulation so yeah, It’s a slow painful process to fluency but it is nice to notice improvement. Unfortunately behind on my textbook reading (by 1/2 chapter) schedule but it *shouldn’t* be a problem to be caught up for next week. hopefully!
