What's the anti-pairing characterization of Tenten you were talking about in the other ask?? Is it from the light novels explicitly?

So I wouldn’t necessarily call it “anti-pairing,” but to my own interpretation, the light novels are a canon indicator that Tenten, at least leading up to Naruto and Hinata’s wedding, had never felt romantically for anyone.

The light novels were overseen personally by Kishimoto and many are currently being made into the anime. Konoha Hiden has already been animated, so it’s safe to assume that the events are canonical.

The link is a translation by a fan of Tenten’s chapter in Konoha Hiden: A Perfect Day for a Wedding. The source material for the Hiden novels gave me some valuable insight when I began mapping the characters of Team Gai, and this was a great chapter for me to capture what I believe is a core part of Tenten’s character that wasn’t explored in the anime or manga.

I’d like to address this passage in particular about Tenten in Chapter 2:

“Ever since last night, for some reason or another, thoughts like that kept circling around her head. Something was nagging at her.

What was bothering her? The truth was, she already knew the answer.

“Marriage, huh…well it’s a nice thing…”

Tenten exhaled, leaning against one of the stakes. Her hands silently played with one of the kunai she’d collected.

This was what had been bothering her. Naruto and Hinata were getting married. It was a happy occasion. Tenten herself had always been getting caught up in thinking about shuriken or kunai or flying guillotines, so she’d never had a boyfriend. She lived her life without any thoughts for romance or femininity. 

Hearing about someone close to her getting married suddenly made one disturbing thought fly into Tenten’s mind and refuse to leave: Was it really okay for her to be like this?

From morning until night, it was always Ninja Weaponry, Ninja Weaponry, Ninja Weaponry… Was it really okay for a young woman to be like that?

On that note, the most recent feeling of ‘love at first sight’ for Tenten had been for the flying guillotine. She only had to hear the weapon’s name before deciding she liked it, and then gone and bought it. But well, how could she not?

And her latest favourite fashion was definitely wrist accessories. There was a device you could wrap around your wrist, and with one single pull, roll out a scroll for summoning weapons in an instant. The convenience was brilliant. You could carry out an assassination anywhere, any time. It was the latest in cutting edge technology.

But…was it really okay for her to be like that?

She’d collected a large and varied enough collection of Ninja Weaponry to open her own store if she wanted to, but she somehow always ended up buying new kunai before she even realised what she was doing.

Kunai really were the basics of Ninja Weaponry. Tenten had strong feelings about them. 

She had collected both common and rare weapons, but at the end of the day, kunai were always the best. She collected both common and rare types of kunai.

Well, that was fine, wasn’t it? You could never have too many kunai.“

This passage is, to me, a solid indicator that Tenten never had romantic feelings for her teammates, especially given that the first part of this chapter is centered on her reflections with said teammates. If there ever were feelings she held for either of them, this chapter would have been the time to mention it. And it's fairly blunt in execution: Tenten thinks about weapons, not romance. And it makes a clear distinction between Tenten's admiration of both of them--which she does mention right before--and her feelings towards love.

I think this is also a very powerful characterization that sets her apart from the others. She is a woman who loves her work, loves her hobbies, and it breaks the mold of what a woman, and in particular a Japanese woman, ‘should’ yearn for. (a separate topic) I bolded certain quotes in particular to emphasize this. 

Tenten isn’t upset that she never pursued someone, she’s conflicted that she isn’t performing to society's expectations for her. She’s an incredibly down-to-earth character and that’s why I love her so much! She’s contemplating her own identity, her own self, rather than her identity simply in relation to another male. 

Also, I'd like to point out the lack of trauma and angst. Tenten's desire to be single wasn't decided by a failed relationship, low self confidence, or loss. It's because she wants to be that way. She's breaking every single stereotype you ever see about single women in media. She's not the widow, the anti-man feminist, the once-burned, or the unsuccessful romantic. Her lack of interest isn't portrayed as an actual "flaw" in her character, it's simply her own insecurity about her image based on what she knows most women desire. (Sakura, Ino, Hinata, Mei, etc.) And while Tenten thinks people would look down on her, who openly does? All of her friends and loved ones make no mention of how she "needs" to find romance.

And by the end of the chapter, she comes to terms with the fact that she is fully content being as she is, collecting weapons and being involved in the lives of her friends without the need (desire) for romantic attachment. It’s a powerful message that you can be fully content and happy on your own without marriage as a necessity for “fulfilled living.” and she's a woman who decides this for herself without any backlash. THAT. IS. SO. POWERFUL.

There’s nothing wrong with marriage. But to me, it seems pretty set in stone that it wasn’t something Tenten really was interested in outside of living up to expectations. When she finally shrugs those expectations of society off, we see her development into someone who is more self-assured, confident, and happy with her decision. Oh, and everyone supports her decision. That's incredibly powerful.

Tenten is a true feminist icon. And yes, her independence is an essential part of who she is.
