Last of the Red Hot Mamas
The Queen of Jazz
Sophie Tucker was a singer and comedienne whose powerful voice and brassy wit delighted audiences for over six decades.
Sophie’s Jewish parents had to escape from Russia in 1886 after her father had deserted the Russian military, and she was born on the boat to America. The family settled in Hartford, Connecticut where they ran a kosher boarding house and restaurant. Sophie and her three siblings worked hard in the family business, waking up at 3 am every day to peel and chop vegetables before school. After Sophie got home she waited tables and washed dishes.
From almost the moment of birth, Sophie had a huge and magnetic personality. She was confident, sassy, and uninhibited. Jewish vaudeville stars often stayed at her family’s boarding house and she was fascinated by them and their lives. She always knew she was destined for a life in show business. Her parents absolutely forbade her to join the paskudnyaks (rascals) who stayed at their rooming house. Sophie still found a way to perform – she started singing for their guests as she served them. “I would stand up in the narrow space by the door and sing with all the drama I could put into it. At the end of the last chorus, between me and the onions there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.”
Desperate to leave home, she eloped in 1903 with local beer truck driver Louis Tuck. When they returned, her parents organized a traditional Orthodox wedding for them. They had a son, Burt, in 1906, and lived with her family, where she was back to her old role of cooking, cleaning, and serving customers. Meanwhile a frequent guest was Willie Howard, a popular vaudeville comedian and the first to use openly Jewish content in his act. He was impressed by Sophie’s natural talent as an entertainer, and he urged her to move to New York and break into show business. Sophie’s husband Louis did not share her enthusiasm for the stage and after she told him she wanted to move to New York, he took off. Soon, Sophie left Burt with her family, telling them she was going to New Haven for a short vacation. Instead, she moved to New York and never returned. She was 19 years old. Burt was raised by Sophie’s family, and Sophie kept in frequent contact with them over the years.
Sophie arrived in New York with a letter of introduction to a famous composer from Willie Howard, but the composer wasn’t impressed by her singing. She was quickly able to find work singing at coffeehouses and saloons. At the German Village, a popular beer garden, she sang 50-100 songs a night for $15 a week. She was such a hit that she was soon making over $150 a week in pay and tips.
Sophie was generous with her money. She sent most of what she made to her family, and lived in a shabby boarding house where the other residents were prostitutes. A nice Jewish girl from Hartford, Sophie had never encountered this type of woman before, but she wasted no time making friends with her neighbors, and started a longtime practice of giving free women-only concerts in bordellos. Sophie shared her money and belongings with the call girls, and hid the money they made from their pimps. She later said, “Every one of them supported a family back home, or a child somewhere.”
At the time, $150/week was an impressive salary for a single woman, but it wasn’t enough for Sophie, who wanted to get out of the restaurant business once and for all and make it big in vaudeville. She got her first break in 1907: a chance to audition for impresario Chris Brown’s Amateur Night. After her audition she overheard Brown say, “This one’s so big and ugly, the crowd out front will razz her. Better get some cork and black her up.” He told Sophie that she passed the audition and would be featured in the show. However, she had to do it in blackface. Sophie was aghast at the suggestion, but Brown and the other producers insisted that her only chance for a career in show business was in blackface. She agreed to do it.
Sophie’s first vaudeville gig was at Tony Pastor’s on the Bowery where she was booked for a pre-show before the matinee. When she took the stage, the theater was empty. She started singing, but as people entered the room they completely ignored her, chatting noisily as they awaited the main event. She suddenly stopped the show, and started berating the audience for being so rude to her. Sophie had what Jews call chutzpah – audacious self-confidence – and she displayed so much humor and spirit that the audience fell in love with her. Nobody made a peep for the rest of the show, and they demanded three encores.
She was booked onto the New England Vaudeville circuit to sing African-American spirituals, and got rave reviews everywhere she went. It wasn’t just her big voice audiences loved, it was also her big personality, her confident swagger combined with self-deprecating humor. Sophie had a sharp wit and a voice that didn’t need a microphone to fill a room.
Audiences adored Sophie’s minstrel act, but she hated performing in blackface. Finally, at a performance in Boston, she’d had enough. She told the producer that her blackface makeup and costume were lost in transit, and before he could argue she marched onstage as herself. She told the shocked audience, “You-all can see I’m a white girl. Well, I’ll tell you something more: I’m not Southern. I’m a Jewish girl and I just learned this Southern accent doing a blackface act. And now, Mr. Leader, please play my song.” She never performed in blackface again.
Some of Sophie’s songs were bawdy, filled with innuendo and double entendre, while others were sentimental. Her most popular songs included “Some of These Days” and the Jewish favorite, “My Yiddishe Mama.” Initially Sophie only performed “Yiddishe Mama” in front of mostly Jewish audiences since much of the song was in Yiddish, but she soon found that all audiences loved the song. Even if they didn’t understand all of the words, they could appreciate her heartful singing about her devoted mother.
Sophie did a European tour in the 1920’s which was a huge success. When she arrived in England in 1922, she was greeted by fans with a huge sign reading “Welcome Sophie Tucker, America’s Foremost Jewish Actress!” Looking back at her career later in life, she described that sign as her proudest moment. Sophie performed for King George V and Queen Mary at the London Palladium in 1926. She greeted the monarch with a hearty “Hiya King!” The Daily Express described Sophie as “a big fat blond genius, with a dynamic personality and amazing vitality.” Yiddishe Mama became an international hit, and she was asked to perform the song in Berlin by the Berlin Broadcasting Company in 1931. Two years later, when Hitler came to power in 1933, all copies of the recording were destroyed.
Comedy writer Bruce Vilanch saw Sophie Tucker perform when he was a child. He remembered, “She’d make you laugh like crazy. She would belt. She still could blow the roof off the joint. Then she would do something incredibly schmaltzy, she would turn on a dime and make the audience weep… As soon as you were done crying, she would turn around and do some bawdy song… Everything she said was with the force of a judge making a sentence. She didn’t speak, she made policy statements.”
Throughout her career, Sophie chose songs mostly written by black and Jewish songwriters from Tin Pan Alley, including young Irving Berlin. She was close friends with her fellow Vaudeville performer Bill Robinson, known as Bojangles. When Sophie invited Bill to her sister’s wedding in the 1920’s, the doorman wouldn’t let him in, telling him to go through the kitchen. Sophie heard this and immediately pushed the doorman out of the way, closed the front door, and told the guests, “OK everybody goes through the kitchen.”
Despite her act’s raciness, she said “I’ve never sung a single song in my whole life on purpose to shock anyone. My ‘hot numbers’ are all, if you will notice, written about something that is real in the lives of millions of people.” Her songs included, “I May Be Getting Older Every Day (But Younger Every Night),” “I’m The Last of the Red-Hot Mamas,” “I Ain’t Takin’ Orders From No One,” and “When They Start to Ration my Passion, It’s Gonna Be Tough on Me.” She often made fun of her size, calling herself a “perfect 48.”
She kept improving her act, and after a decade as a solo performer, she created a back-up band of black jazz musicians called the “Kings of Syncopation.” They recorded several albums together, all of which were hits, and toured the country playing to enthusiastic crowds. In Chicago they played 15 weeks at the Palace and then at every other theater in town. Crooner Tony Bennett called Sophie “the most underrated jazz singer that ever lived.”
After a few years as the self-styled “Queen of Jazz,” Sophie re-imagined herself again, as a cabaret performer, accompanied by piano player Ted Shapiro. He became part of her act as they developed a snappy banter. Over the years she did some film, radio and TV work but what she loved most was interacting with a live audience.
Sophie married two more times, but neither husband liked being “Mr. Sophie Tucker” and both marriages failed. She said, “Once you start carrying your own suitcase, paying your own bills, running your own show, you’ve done something to yourself that makes you one of those women men like to call ‘a pal’ and “a good sport,’ the kind of woman they tell their troubles to. But you’ve cut yourself off from the orchids and the diamond bracelets, except those you buy yourself.” Throughout her life, Sophie was known for her generosity, and she gave away much of what she made to a variety of philanthropic causes. She established the Sophie Tucker Foundation in the early 1950’s, and endowed hospitals, synagogues, actors guilds, and several charitable organizations in Israel.
Sophie continued performing until the end of her life, even after getting lung cancer. While undergoing treatment she was still doing two shows a night. Sophie died at age 80 in 1966, during a months-long theater engagement. As she lay on her death bed, she asked the nurse to “bring me my chiffon hanky, bring me my wig” and she did bits from her act until she took her last breath. Thousands of mourners attended her funeral at Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Known as the “Last of the Red-Hot Mamas,” Sophie’s act inspired later female performers such as Mae West and Bette Midler.
For entertaining audiences around the world for sixty years and giving generously to others, we honor Sophie Tucker as this week’s Thursday Hero.

After further negotiations between songwriter groups and music publishers, songwriters may have a bigger role in participating in how an agency created to expedite a proposed blanket mechanical license will conduct business. That is, if the Music Modernization Act is passed.
What the law ultimately says is up to members of the House and Senate, who will write the legislation and the subsequent regulations, but in the meantime, negotiations between the Songwriters Guild of America, Nashville Songwriters Association International, and Songwriters of North America and the National Music Publisher’s Association have resulted in a proposal that allows songwriters and composers to have four seats on the now-expanded 14-seat board of directors, instead of the initially allotted two seats for songwriters on a smaller 10-seat board; while the unclaimed royalties oversight committee will now be evenly divided between publishers and songwriters. It also has resulted in additional clarifications to how payouts from unclaimed funds are distributed. read more at billboard.com

Standing at the bar with... Leo Saunders
We LOVE hanging out in Cotswolds pubs and recently bumped into Leo Saunders, musician, songwriter and founder of Tuneriver, a personalised song service.
So Leo, what’s the drink you're getting at the bar?
Vodka and ginger ale (ale, not beer) - it’s my go-to - refreshing and a little spicy. My favourite vodka
Tito's Handmade Vodka
it’s an original craft Vodka (whatever that is?!) produced in Austin, Texas from corn instead of potatoes. My other favourite is
Crystal Head
created by Dan Aykroyd, it’s very smooth and comes in a glass skull-shaped bottle. Very rock’n’roll! Haha! The ginger ale? Gotta be Fever Tree - it could be a branding thing... but it does seem to taste better!
What’s your favourite kind of pub? Which ones do you go to in the Cotswolds?
The Cotswolds is fantastic for the variety of pubs you can find. I often have people stay from out of town and they always love the options we have available in Cheltenham. I tend to go to a lot of the places I perform music at, as ‘LEO LIVE’
https://www.leosaunders.com/
The Retreat, Harry Cook’s, The Bayshill, Smokey Joe’s, Gin & Juice/131, The Tavern. I also like the bar at Cowley Manor with the fun art on the walls, and other places outside Cheltenham - The Prince Albert in Rodborough is also an amazing place, I need to get back there sometime...
Photo: Cowley Manor
If a track came on - what would make you dance? What would make you make a swift exit?
Currently, it would be ‘Good As Hell’ by Lizzo. I love old-school stuff like Funkadelic and Sly Stone. If there’s music on, I’m unlikely to make a swift exit… unless it’s Nickelback, that is!
You started out on the Camden indie circuit - what lead you to that life? What was the best memory?
At the time I used the live in South-East London, but used to spend as much free-time as possible in Camden. I loved the shops, the market, music venues and general vibe of the place. It was the 90’s, and we would often bump into well-known band members in pubs like The Falcon, The Monarch, The Dublin Castle and The Underworld.
We supported FEEDER at gigs around this time. Hard to pick a ‘best’ memory, but probably playing to a packed house at the infamous Water Rats in Kings Cross. The band from that time are doing a reunion gig at The Water Rats this July, so I’m looking forward to that one!

Tell us a little more about the War Songs project. How long did it take you to put it together and would you like to do something like that again?
It took around six months to pull-together. I worked on the compositions with George Moorey who is a great producer and music creator based in Gloucester. Our concept was to create 2 pieces of music from WWI poetry to commemorate the centenary of the First World War, one that was 19mins 14secs long and one 19mins 18seconds long - 19:14, 19:18 - to represent the years of the war. We attracted Heritage Lottery funding for the project and they recommended we focus on the local Gloucestershire composer and poet, Ivor Gurney.
I absolutely loved visiting the Gloucestershire Archives and having the opportunity to read Ivor Gurney’s actual note books and letters, and then interpret his poetry into music with George. His story resonated with me having lived with my own mental health issues and challenges. So it became incredibly important to deliver a good piece of work.
We co-ordinated with local musicians and schools and community groups to perform the pieces at The Guildhall. On the night there were 99 musicians on-stage - it was wonderful to see the younger musicians enjoying and benefitting from working alongside the professional and semi-professional musicians.

We love your new venture Tuneriver - how does it work?
Thank you! In a nutshell, Tuneriver help customers to send personalised songs as gifts for various occasions - Birthday, Valentine’s, Anniversary, Mother’s Day, Congratulations, Motivation… the list goes on!
Through years of working in the creative-arts fields, I’ve found that music artists are paid very poorly for their work that appears on regular music-streaming services. For example, an artist can dedicate weeks and months-worth of time and pour their heart and soul into working on an EP or album. Yet, to receive just the equivalent of minimum wage for their work, they will need to achieve over a million ‘plays/streams’ per month. With tuneriver.com singer-songwriters are able to get paid well for their personalised tracks with each order.
There is also a possibility for the artists to have their work promoted to an international audience and also build up a community where the artists support each other. So, each purchase made on tuneriver.com goes toward supporting the artist by paying them for their musical art and songcraft and investing in their creativity.
On the tuneriver.com site, you can review and choose a song to be personalised and have it ordered within a few minutes. After ordering, the song goes into the studio for the song personalisation to be added and within 72hrs it’s delivered as a personalised webpage with the downloadable personalised song, personalised lyric sheet and message. With some songs you can even personalise up to 40% of the song!
We’ve been receiving an amazing response from our customers, people are genuinely ‘wowed’ and it is so heartwarming to hear their incredible feedback.
And yes… we’ve heard that our personalised songs have made people cry happy-tears!!
Tell us more about some of the artists that you can find on Tuneriver.
We’re so happy to announce four new artists for 2020.
The first is Oli Gosh. Oli began her career as an actress, training at RADA and then performing roles ranging from Juliet in Romeo and Juliet to Dirty Dancing in the West End. Coming from the underground up, Oli found her true home on the dance floor of Amnesia in Ibiza where she discovered Techno, teaming up with fellow south east London producer, Naive Machine to create the track ‘Silva’ which combines ethereal vocals with the raw power of flamenco stamping samples. She also worked with Danglo and their 1st release, ‘Never let you go’, was picked up by Pete Tong. She now has tens of thousands of followers on Spotify and is working on songs to be featured on Tuneriver.com
Next up is blues-rocker Marc James. Marc is a gifted vocalist, guitarist, and lap steel player, worship leader and songwriter. If you like Eddie Vedder’s voice you’ll love Marc’s! He is the author of many well-known songs such as ‘Surrender’. Marc is also famous for fronting the band Verra Cruz, an English blues-rock band originally from St Albans.
The next signing is our first international artist, Janet Renders (pronounced: ‘Shanet') from The Netherlands.
She is a solo artist and singer in her band ‘The First Resort’ and has performed during the international Four Days Marches in Nijmegen – an event that promotes sport and exercise. Janet is currently studying Music Therapy at the HAN University of Applied Sciences in Nijmegen and would love to give a special person in your life an unforgettable gift: your unique song.
Our latest signing is Gina Larner, who I spotted singing at The Cheltenham Songwriter’s Guild at Smokey Joe’s. Gina is an up and coming folk/country artist, originally from Brighton.
She has been playing guitar and singing since she can remember and is just about to finish her degree in Popular Music. Gina has performed up and down the country, being a grand finalist in Open Mic UK and other major competitions, along with playing with her band consisting of double bassist, electric guitar and violin. She has released 2 singles, and continues to write new songs to perform/sell. I can’t wait to have her songs featured on tuneriver.com.
What’s your next venture?
I’m looking for a piano player that I can team up with to create a duo. I had a band before called The Holy Sinners. We used to put on events titled ’Songs of Intimacy, Romance and Doom’ (!) and I’d like to put on some evenings at places like Chapel Arts. Songs by Nina Simone, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, with some jazz and swing.
What are you going to be eating after your pub drink?
I’m a sucker for sticky chicken wings and sweet potato fries, it makes me feel like I’m back in New Orleans.
Where do you go in the Cotswolds to unwind?
There are some wonderful walks. I like Cleeve Common, Leckhampton Hill, Robinswood Hill and Painswick Beacon. There are also wonderful parks in Cheltenham: Sandford and Pitville and my faves. Lunch or brunch at Baker & Graze in the Suffolks is also one of my favourite places. I also love the steam railway that runs from the racecourse to Broadway.
I studied Ancient History/Classical Civilisation at school and university, so I love visiting historic Roman sites and the Corinium Museum. To fully unwind I usually go to a local jam-night, like the one at The Bayshill, though... and I’ve starting singing some blues in The Berkeley Arms in Tewkesbury on a Monday night with Bryn Thomas, Roger Petley, Nathan Thomas and Stef Stevens, that really helps me unwind!

Toyota, 1917 & Google Stadia
Well, here we come, waltzing down the street, getting hot and sweaty, with all this humidity. Hey hey we’re the Nerds yeah, and people say we look kind of funny, particularly Buck the big Boomer. Haha, admit it, you started to sing that in to the Monkey’s theme tune didn’t you, if not you just went back and tried it. We this week we bring you another awesome episode to listen to while you rest in the shade and enjoy a breeze on the long weekend.
First up we are taking flight with Buck, Toyota, and Joby. No, Joby is not a new host, it is an aviation company that Toyota is investing in to increase its presence in the transport arena. Also this is the next step to having vehicles like in the Jetsons. Check out the drawings in the link, a tilt-engine vehicle that looks like a cross between a drone and a helicopter. This is seriously cool. Also while looking around at all the different transport tech news Buck also found some artists renderings of potential vehicles for space travel from Lexus. Wait till you hear what Buck and Professor think one of them looks like. Which is your favorite option?
Next up DJ has a story about the Producers Guild Awards, in particular 1917. Want to know what movies won which awards, listen in. Also you can hear about the movie 1917, with some of the various story plot points to look out for. For those unfamiliar with it 1917 is a movie set in World War One. It is the story of a soldier and his friend trying to save the lives of 1600 British troops. There are some funny parts, but it is a moving drama based on stories told by the Grand Father of the Director Sam Mendes. DJ has also asked for your predictions for the Oscars and who you think should be nominated and win, so let us know on either: Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
Next up we have Professor bringing us an update on the saga of Crytek and CIG (Star Citizen). Would you believe that so far CIG have spent over $900,000 on this legal matter? Yep, for the company started on kickstarter and now sells space fleets for $27000 they are really going hard. Want to know what has happened then listen in. As usual we have all the shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. Until next week, please remember to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated.

- 21 January 2020 – Terry Jones - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Jones
Terry Jones died on 21 January 2020 from complications of dementia at his home in Highgate, north London. Jones was a Welsh actor, writer, comedian, screenwriter, film director and historian. He was a member of the Monty Python comedy team.
After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in English, Jones and writing partner Michael Palin (whom he met at Oxford) wrote and performed for several high-profile British comedy programmes, including Do Not Adjust Your Set and The Frost Report, before creating Monty Python's Flying Circus with Cambridge graduates Eric Idle, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and American animator/filmmaker Terry Gilliam. Jones was largely responsible for the programme's innovative, surreal structure, in which sketches flowed from one to the next without the use of punchlines. He made his directorial debut with the team's film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which he co-directed with Gilliam, and also directed the subsequent Python films Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.
Jones co-created and co-wrote with Palin the anthology series Ripping Yarns. He also wrote an early draft of Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth, though little of his work remained in the final cut. Jones was a well-respected medieval historian, having written several books and presented television documentaries about the period, as well as a prolific children's book author. In 2016, Jones received a Lifetime Achievement award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his outstanding contribution to television and film. After living for several years with a degenerative aphasia, he gradually lost the ability to speak and died on 21 January 2020 from frontotemporal dementia.

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist and essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.
As a writer, Orwell produced literary criticism and poetry, fiction and polemical journalism; and is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working-class life in the north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences soldiering for the Republican faction of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), are as critically respected as his essays on politics and literature, language and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked George Orwell second among "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
Orwell's work remains influential in popular culture and in political culture, and the adjective "Orwellian" – describing totalitarian and authoritarian social practices – is part of the English language, like many of his neologisms, such as "Big Brother", "Thought Police", and "Hate week", "Room 101", the "memory hole", and "Newspeak", "doublethink" and "proles", "unperson" and "thoughtcrime".

All your music revenue sources (and how to collect the money)
As a musician, you should be collecting money from MANY income streams. Do you know what they are?
Royalties. Earnings. Income. Revenue. Scratch. Bones. Loot. Notes. Moolah. Dough.
There are a lot of words for money.
There are also a lot of ways for musicians to get paid today.
Independent artists now have access to more revenue-generating opportunities than ever before.
That doesn’t mean it’s EASY to earn money as a musician, but it does mean you have more options to explore, more ways of aligning your talents with an income stream, and more ways of putting your recordings, songs, performances, and merch to work.
CD Baby makes this easy, helping you monetize your music across multiple channels, with the ease of managing all your revenue from one account.
FULLY MONETIZE YOUR MUSIC
A list of common revenue sources for today’s musician, and how to collect that money:
Streaming revenue from your sound recordings
What is it?
This is money you’re owed whenever your recordings — whether you’re the label, the artist, or both — are streamed on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, or Deezer. This royalty is sometimes called the “streaming license fee.”
How to collect?
With CD Baby as your distributor, we’ll deliver your music to all the important digital platforms, collect the money you’re owed, and add it to your account with detailed reports on your streaming activity across all platforms.
Download revenue
What is it?
If you’re an artist or a label, you’re probably owed money whenever you sell a download (on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, etc.).
[If you wrote/composed the music, you’re also owed publishing royalties, but we’ll get into that more in depth later.]
For now, we’re talking about the royalty you’re owed for the digital sale of a sound recording.
How to collect?
From download stores: This one is simple — CD Baby collects this money from download stores such as iTunes and Amazon and we pay it to you. We also provide a full accounting of all download activity, plus daily trending reports.
Social video monetization on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, and more
What is it?
You’re owed money for the usage of your music in video content that appears on popular platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Those platforms take a “sonic fingerprint” of your recording, and any time your music appears anywhere in their ecosystem, it’s monetized on your behalf.
How to collect?
CD Baby’s social video monetization service is INCLUDED at no extra cost with both Standard and Pro Publishing distribution packages. We work with the social video platforms to deliver your songs so they’ll be properly ID’d — as well as available for use in music catalogs like the one in Instagram Stories; then claims are placed on any video that uses your music. Related revenue is collected by CD Baby and paid to you!
YouTube Partner Program revenue
What is it?
YouTube gives eligible channels a way to earn ad revenue on their videos via the Partner Program.
How to collect?
First, do you qualify for the YouTube Partner Program? If you meet those channel requirements, sweet! YouTube will pay ya.
Note: The Partner Program is different from CD Baby’s YouTube monetization service. Even if you don’t qualify for the Partner Program directly, CD Baby will still monetize your music wherever possible through Content ID.
Physical sales
What are they?
Money earned by selling physical music media formats such as:
CD
vinyl
cassette
USB flash drive
and more
How to collect?
At shows: If you’re selling these at shows, you can put the cash in your pocket or run cards on a system such as the Square Reader or PayPal’s Chip & Swipe Reader. Ecommerce solutions such as Shopify also have tools that help you sell product, manage inventory, and collect customer data at live shows.
From record stores: If you’re using CD Baby as a physical distributor to get your CDs and vinyl into thousands of record stores around the world, you set your wholesale price and CD Baby will pay you whenever there’s a sale.
From CD Baby’s music store: Similarly, if you’re selling CDs or vinyl via our online music store, we’ll immediately add that sale to your account.
For your own ecommerce efforts: Lastly, if you’re doing your own order fulfillment for physical sales (meaning you’re going to run to the post office whenever you sell something), you can use services like Bandcamp or Shopify to create an online store, and payments would be processed via something like PayPal or Stripe, then deposited to you via ACH.
Mechanical royalties
What are they?
Mechanical royalties are a kind of publishing royalty (money owed to publishers and songwriters for the usage of a composition, as opposed to a particular recording).
If you’re a songwriter, composer, or producer who creates original music, you’re owed a mechanical royalty for the “reproduction” of your composition. In the physical world, this meant mechanical reproduction in the form of CDs or vinyl. In the digital world, both downloads and streams are considered virtual mechanical reproductions. You’re owed money for all of it!
How to collect?
For global interactive streaming activity: With CD Baby Pro Publishing, we’ll make sure your original music is registered with collection societies around the world and we’ll help you collect all the publishing royalties generated by interactive streaming activity. Interactive streaming is when the user chooses exactly what they want to hear; think Spotify, Apple Music, etc.
For downloads within the US: This is a tricky one to explain, but the short answer is — you probably don’t need to worry about it.
In most parts of the world, mechanical royalties from downloads are set aside by the download store and passed to a royalty collection society, who then holds those funds to be collected by publishers and publishing administrators. However, in the US, mechanical royalties for downloads gets paid to the distributor as part of a bulk payment for the download.
If you use CD Baby, we collect that money and pay it to you. If you’re the songwriter and ALSO acting as your own label, well, it’s all your money anyways. The only time it gets tricky is if you need to pay mechanicals to your collaborators or bandmates. Then you’d just pay the songwriter(s) what they’re owed after receiving payments and reports from CD Baby.
For international downloads: As mentioned above, mechanical royalties for international downloads are passed to collection societies. With CD Baby Pro Publishing, we’ll act as your publishing administrator and collect that money for you.
Performance royalties
What are they?
Performance royalties are another form of publishing royalty, owed to publishers and songwriters when their compositions are played on the radio, performed in public, and more.
How to collect?
With CD Baby Pro Publishing, we’ll work in conjunction with Performing Rights Organizations around the world (including ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, SOCAN, PRS, and many more) to make sure you’re earning ALL your performance royalties. Just don’t forget to file your set lists when you perform live, because you’re owed songwriter royalties for those shows too!
Non-interactive streaming royalties
What are they?
These are royalties generated from non-interactive streaming on internet and satellite radio services. Non-interactive streams are passive plays that happen when a user is NOT choosing exactly what they want to hear — like on Pandora Radio. Unlike publishing royalties, which are owed to publishers and songwriters for the usage of a composition, these royalties are paid for the usage of a sound recording. They’re owed to the featured artist(s), the session players, and the label that helped create the recording.
How to collect?
The label portion: With CD Baby as your distributor, we’ll help you collect the label portion of these royalties for non-interactive streams on services like Pandora.
The featured artist portion: You should register directly with SoundExchange, and they will pay you the artist share of these royalties.
The session-player portion: If you played on a certain track that sees non-interactive streaming activity, you’re owed something too, and you can collect by affiliating with an organization such as the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), the Screen Actors Guild, or the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
Session, production, arranger, remixer fees
What are they?
As a musician, you probably do OTHER work outside of your own music-making. You play on a friend’s record. You help arrange or produce a track for someone in your scene. You remix a song by an artist halfway around the world. Sometimes you’ll work for free or as a favor for a friend, and sometimes — most times — you should get paid for these efforts.
How to collect?
This area is a little more nebulous, as terms are usually negotiable (for instance, should a producer get songwriting credit or just get points?).
One thing is certain: Get your agreement in writing before you collaborate. Determine if this is a work-for-hire situation where you’re contributing your talents for an upfront fee ONLY, or if you deserve some ownership stake or ongoing royalty split.
Live performance income
What is it?
The money you make from playing live! Could be the door charge. Could be ticket sales. Could be a guarantee. Minus house expenses. Minus “catering” (cheap beer and chips). Minus “promotion” (your name in tiny font at the bottom of a monthly calendar in the local rag). ; )
How to collect?
With live revenue, there’s no one answer. You could get paid by the talent buyer before the gig, the bartender or bouncer at the end of the night, by a promoter stuffing a bloody envelope with crumpled bills weeks afterwards, or with an instant transfer of funds from a ticketing platform.
However the money is due, good luck!
Sync Licensing
What is it?
“Synchronization” is the act of pairing audio with moving images (video, film, TV, commercials, video games, corporate presentations, etc.) Whenever a song is used in this manner, the songwriter(s), publisher(s), and label must all be paid! Not only that, those rights holders get to set the terms for the sync usage, set the monetary amount of the license, and always have the ability to say “No, go to hell.”
How to collect?
You can handle your own sync licensing, negotiating with music supervisors yourself, or you can use a sync licensing service such as CD Baby — which is included at NO EXTRA COST with both CD Baby Standard and Pro Publishing distribution. We’ve gotten big placements for artists on HBO, Showtime, NBC, FX, MTV, and many more.
Important: CD Baby’s sync licensing service is NON-exclusive, meaning you’re free to use other sync agencies as well.
Just remember, 50% of the sync fee is owed to the label and the other 50% goes to the publisher(s)/songwriter(s). Hopefully you’re all three! If so, you’ll also be set up to collect performance royalties for things like ongoing TV usages, thanks to CD Baby Pro Publishing and your Performing Rights Organization.
Merch sales
What is it?
This is when you make money by selling OTHER products besides your recorded music: posters, t-shirts, hats, mugs, sheet music,…
How to collect?
Similar to the CD and vinyl sales mentioned above, you might have an online store you’ve set up yourself, employed an existing ecommerce solution like Shopify, or you just sell these things at gigs. If you’re putting dollars right in your pocket, be sure to keep track of the payments, monitor your inventory, and be ready to stock up again when supply gets low.
I said this was ALL the music revenue sources, but I’m sure I missed a few. If you’d like to suggest another revenue stream, let me know in the comments below.

Learn strategies and tools for your website and social media to win and engage fans and get your music in front of more people.
Presented by Matt Moran
Born December 10, 1965 in Southern California, Matt Moran does not remember any news stories about the Vietnam War – he does remember music. Jim Croce, Simon & Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Pete Seeger, and the rock & roll of the early ’70s formed the backdrop for an appreciation of lyrics and storytelling. Picking up his father’s copy of Pete Seeger’s “red book”, a Mel Bay chord book, and a Guild classical guitar they still own, he taught himself to tune and then play guitar. The Crawdad Song, This Land Is Your Land, and Skip To My Lou became his first songs – songs he plays to this day. He moved on to Rock and Roll, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Rush, and others but his love for acoustic music and more emotive lyrics never abated. He began writing songs from day one. His songwriting has taken on a nearly frantic fervor and through his web site, house concerts, and other performances, Matt is building a loyal following of fans/friends who value lyrics, respect songwriting, and believe in passionate pursuits.

Hosted by: Rod O'Riley
Rod O’Riley is the writing and performing name chosen by the humble and ordinary Rodney Dean Stansfield. RDS is a guitar seller by day, songwriter by night, and many other things in the hours in between. A native of Los Angeles, raised in his parents’ native Vancouver, BC, and schooled all over the West Coast. Currently learning the fine art of bass playing, producing, and letting the computer take care of the hard parts. Active as an organizer in science fiction fandom, he finds time (somehow) to be an activist for environmental and political causes. And, of course, for the continued viability of live music and the venues that support it. In other words, Rodney is a consummate dabbler. And he is also Chapter Coordinator in Orange County for Songsalive! an international songwriting organization.

BE PREPARED
1. It is essential to register your attendance in advance so that the coordinator knows how many to expect and ensure a successful workshop for all.
2. Members and Non-Members can attend the Workshop, however, ONLY Songsalive! Pro Members can present their song for critique or pitch.
3. First timers (whether Member or Non-Member) may only watch/audit the workshop (not present a song), but can participate in question/answer segment.
4. Songwriters presenting a song for critique/pitch must:
a. Bring at least 10 typed copies of your lyric sheet (with full contact details)
b. bring your song on CD or perform live (bring your instrument - unplugged/no P.A). All CD's must be burned to work on a CD Player. Please check the CD first - if it won't play in your car CD then it won't work at the workshop.
c. have CD labeled with track number / and instruments tuned and ready.
5.How Song critiques are chosen: Song Critiques are randomly chosen from those who arrive and are fully signed in before 6.55 pm (not whoever arrives first). We try and start sign in at 6.45 pm (depends on our set up needs). This does not guarantee we will get to all songs within workshop (depends on numbers). Any arrivals post 6.55 pm will be on a wait list and if we have the time will try to fit those in. Anyone who arrives post 7.15 pm will not be eligible to receive a song critique, even wait listed. Workshop starts on time, 7 pm.
6. Do I have to get a song critique? No. You don't need to present a song for critique to benefit from our workshop. Watch, listen, participate and meet fellow peers. It's all part of learning.
7. We do not support late arrivals. Please be on time to be fair to our participants and guests and stay from beginning to end.

PR: John Wick Chapter 2 soundtrack
VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Introducing The New Song “A Job To Do” Written and Performed By Alice In Chains Vocalist/Guitarist Jerry Cantrell Featuring Original Music Composed By Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard With Original Songs Performed by Ciscandra Nostalghia and Le Castle Vania (February 6, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande will release the JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on February 10 and on CD on March 3, 2017. The album features original music composed by Tyler Bates (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, JOHN WICK) and Joel J. Richard (JOHN WICK). The soundtrack features songs written for the film and performed by Alice In Chains vocalist/guitarist Jerry Cantrell, Le Castle Vania, and “Plastic Heart,” a reimagining of the JOHN WICK theme (by Bates and Richard) performed by Ciscandra Nostalghia. “JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 expands on the rock/electronic hybrid of JOHN WICK,” said Bates. “It's a much more aggressive and frenetic score throughout.” Legendary hitman John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers. “Chad [Stahelski, director] wanted an Italian influence for the Rome storyline which inspired the use of cello, mandolin, operatic vocals; and in one instance the incorporation of elements from Vivaldi,” Richard described. “It was a matter of finding instrumentation and a musical language that alluded to Italy's rich musical history while working within the gritty and modern sound of JOHN WICK.”
“The new film pulls no punches, weapons, or fighting techniques, which required the music to change gears and tone at every turn. It's completely insane,” said Bates. “Joel introduced an element of opera to the score that really makes the dark sense of humor (buried in the floor with John's weapons and coins) rather apparent.” Bates jumped into the action himself, appearing on-screen as part of a ‘band’ with Ciscandra Nostalghia and Le Castle Vania performing in Rome. One of the songs they perform is “Plastic Heart” a reimagined version of the original “John Wick Theme,” featuring lyrics by Nostalghia. Also in the film and on the soundtrack is “A Job To Do,” performed by multi-platinum-selling artist Jerry Cantrell. "I really dug JOHN WICK and have always admired Keanu's work. When the opportunity arose to create a song for the second film, Tyler Bates and I wrote and recorded ‘A Job To Do’, a theme song for the character. Can’t wait to see it!” said Cantrell. “Jerry and I are friends and neighbors,” explained Bates. “We got together to jam and came up with the music. He’s a fan of the first John Wick movie and wrote the lyrics from John Wick's introspective.” Track Listing 1. Plastic Heart - Performed by Ciscandra Nostalghia 2. Shark Chevelle 3. Man Of Focus 4. Sumo Showdown 5. Peace & Vodka 6. Missing Helen 7. Back In The Ground 8. Santino 9. Walk To Museum 10. Guns & Turtlenecks 11. Wick In Rome 12. Suits Maps and Guns 13. An adept and versatile music mind, he develops a distinct sonic palette for each project that is reflective of the director’s unique brand of story-telling and emotion, whether it be sweeping epic grandeur or sheer terror. In 2004, after a decade of writing film music, he scored Zack Snyder’s reimagining of DAWN OF THE DEAD written by James Gunn, igniting longstanding relationships with both. His soundtrack for Snyder’s 300 quickly became one biggest-selling score albums of the 21st Century. 300 was followed by further collaborations with the filmmaker such as WATCHMEN and SUCKER PUNCH. A partnership with Gunn evolved from the 2006 cult favorite SLITHER and led to SUPER and Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which became the third highest-grossing film of 2014 worldwide. Throughout Bates’ career he has worked with iconic and influential filmmakers, including Academy Award® winner William Friedkin on KILLER JOE and Rob Zombie on THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, HALLOWEEN, and HALLOWEEN II. His imprint on the gaming world is apparent in his music for KILLZONE SHADOW FALL, GOD OF WAR: ASCENSION, ARMY OF TWO 40TH DAY, and more. Bates’ work in TV spans a wide range of styles from Showtime’s CALIFORNICATION to Audience Network’s highly popular KINGDOM. An on-camera performance for CALIFORNICATION is where Bates met Marilyn Manson, kicking off another focused and fiery creative alliance. Tyler Bates co-wrote and produced Manson’s THE PALE EMPEROR, which bowed at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 and Rolling Stone proclaimed, “#1 Metal Album of 2015.” “Cupid Carries a Gun” became the main title theme for WGN’s hit series, SALEM, while “Killing Strangers” figured prominently in Keanu Reeves’ John Wick. He also held down lead guitar duties on Manson’s Hell Not Hallelujah Tourand his 2016 arena tour, playing to a half-million fans alongside metal giants Slipknot. Beyond co-creating Manson’s forthcoming SAY10, 2017 sees Tyler’s scores for Charlize Theron’s THE COLDEST CITY, JOHN WICK: CHAPTER TWO, co-composed with longtime friend Joel Richard, the Gunn-penned and -produced THE BELKO EXPERIMENT directed by Greg McLean, and the mega-anticipated GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, directed by James Gunn. Ultimately, Tyler Bates’ natural ability to connect with his collaborators yields music that not only becomes part of the film and television zeitgeist, but that resonates with authenticity to audiences around the globe. ABOUT JOEL J. RICHARD Joel J. Richard’s passion for music sparked at age twelve with the purchase of a 4-track recorder and an electric guitar. Coming of age, while touring with bands in the New York hard rock scene, Joel lists a diversified range of creative influences (from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, to Tool and Tom Waits, to Portishead and Peter Gabriel). Joel’s unorthodox background in music would go on to shape his sound – fusing time-honored musicality with moving atmospheric experimentation. With equal measure, his versatile talent serves raw and unbridled industrial rock-influenced compositions and beautifully intimate acoustic ensemble scores. Joel’s knack for inventive hybrid composition is evident in his scores for the ABC Family miniseries FALLEN, Ridley and Tony Scott’s Emmy nominated THE ADROMEDA STRAIN, Showtime’s thriller/drama COMPOUND FRACTURE, the ABC Family series RAVENSWOOD, as well as the Lionsgate/Thunder Road feature JOHN WICK. Joel’s recent projects include ABC’s hit TV series QUANTICO, the thriller NO EVIL and the upcoming Lionsgate film JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2.
