UNIMe (Korean: 유니메; Japanese: ユニメ), is a South Korean girl group formed by Mélomanie Entertainment in 2019. The group consists of six members: HiA, Heiryung, Haewon, Soomi, HaeHyo, and Seulree. UNIMe debuted on August 28, 2019, with the title song "Secret" from their first mini album, UNIVERSAL + Me.

┃NAME

When Mélomanie announced the group prior to their debut they explained the meaning behind the group's name, stating that "UNIMe combines "Universal" and "Me" to create "UNIMe." The name holds the meaning that, "[UNIMe] will show the fans the Universal talent that they have that becomes 'Me' when gathering each person's individual strengths." During the group's debut promotions the lead vocal Soomi said that 'UNIWe' was one of the original options for the group name. 

┃HISTORY

2012-2017: Pre-debut activities

Jeung Hi Ah (HiA) joined in 2012 being the first member to join the company. In 2016 she was a contestant on the debut season of Produce 101 and placed 12th on the final episode, unfortunately not making it into the show's final group I.O.I.

Ree Seul Gi (Seulree) was a well known former trainee of Jellyfish Entertainment and trained with several Gugudan members. She left the company in 2017 because of an unfriendly environment under Jellyfish. She almost did not audition for another company until she saw a performance of MAMAMOO. She auditioned for Mélomanie in 2017 and was accepted into the company. 

Seo Hei Ryung was a JYP trainee in 2017 and left the company the same year due to musical differences with the company. She later auditioned for Mélomanie within the same year and was accepted becoming the third trainee choice for Mélomanie's girl group after Seulree. 

Rim Hae Won trained under YG for only two years, having joined in 2015 and leaving in 2017. She joined Mélomanie entertainment in 2018.

Both Cha Soomin and Hae Hyo had not trained under any companies before joining Mélomanie. They both joined in 2018. Neither of them had been shown to the public on any official Mélomanie accounts so fans were excited for the mysterious trainees.

2018-2019: Preparation & Debut

After HiA had not made it into the final lineup of I.O.I, Mélomanie made the decision to choose her as the first member for their upcoming girl group. They evaluated a group of 20 trainees in 2017 which included Soomi and HiA, and from the group of trainees they had picked 4 other trainees but all of them either left the company or were taken out of the lineup. Then in 2018 trainees Heiryung, Haewon, and HaeHyo joined the company and were added to the lineup, which became the final lineup for the group.

Mélomanie had hinted at a new group for the year of 2019 in October of 2018. Little had still been known about who the members were and when the group was set to have their debut. In July of 2019 Mélomanie officially announced the group's name 'UNIMe' and the members. They stated the group would be debuted the following month of August. 

They made their official debut on August 28, 2019 with the title song "Secret" including their mini album "UNIVERSAL + Me".

It is I, Calcium, who has consumed way too much K-Pop and has opinions on which songs (and by extension artists) are actually worth a damn.

This is part one because there is so much K-Pop to sort through, so this is going to cover female artists whether groups or soloists. These songs range from bubblegum pop to rock, so I do not expect you to enjoy every single one on this list.

In case this breaks containment: Just because a song or artist is not on this list does not mean I think the song or artist is bad. Also, understand this was made specifically for my mutuals and mutuals only.

Important Language Note: When Romanized, the word 'you' in Korean translates to 'nega' and the word 'I' in Korean translates to 'naega'. When said very fast it sounds like the n-word. I promise it is not the n-word, they are saying 'you' or 'I'.

Overall Artist Recommendations + Explanations

Apink: South Korea's music industry has a problem allowing their female artists to mature over time, but APink has a good blend between the bubblegum pop sound and some of the most beautiful vocals you'll ever hear.

BlackPink: This is going to be controversial, but I found them to be a good (metaphorical) gateway drug. I recommend listening to their first album The Album, but whatever you do skip Ice Cream.

Chung Ha: I cannot emphasize how much I love her entire discography. Most of the soloist listings would have just been her and Sumni if I wasn't self-regulating myself.

Dreamcatcher: Dreamcatcher has come to be known as "The Face of Rock in K-pop", and they deserve the title with the bangers they put out. Not to flex, but I've been a fan since their debut in 2017 and I'm not letting go anytime soon.

NewJeans: This girl group is inspired by 1990s-2000s pop, and it shows in the way everything they make is criminally catchy. If you want to feel like the beginning of a teen movie, they are the go to group to go to.

Sumni: She is my favorite soloist, and most of the soloist listings would have just been her and Chungha if I wasn't self-regulating myself.

That is it for part one, even though I know I am going to be kicking myself later for leaving out some songs but I hope my mutuals appreciate my list.

The next part will be boy groups and soloists. :)

The more i think about this the more pissed i am actually. Leos stepsons better step the fuck up this is EMBARRASING all their senior idols better be judging them. Half of vixx cant sing cant cant serve but they still did WORK. Gugudan was Jellyfish's answer to loona and they died for this?? For THIS? Like enhypen is marginally doing better now. I am Upset.

Hahahaaha I totally get what you mean, I have a ton of ideas but actually writing them is a whole different thing. I have storylines, I have plots, I have things that I simply want to make fics, and then they just stay like mere ideas because I move onto the next idea 😭, I have like 50 songs I've been meaning to make fics too, there's one I particularly feel sad for not doing which is touch tank by quinnie, it was the perfect song for an Anton fic but I left it abandoned too 💀, it also had a ton of yearning and it was just all about swimming (because oh surprise I was a swimmer) and I wanted to put one of my most precious childhood memories because I KNOW it was romantic as fuck even if I never had nothing with my irl friend, it was purely a fic for me but that I was sure a ton of my big girlies would've loved.

I wanted to put a lot of things about growing up with a swimmer body because I was literally the nightmare for both athletes and chubby young girls, I started becoming broader but at the same time I wasn't losing weight and to add more pain I was also always the tallest kid there, not only between girls but with everyone my age 💀 (you can see why I'm so into talking about beauty standards 💀💀💀)

I loved f(x) so much, I've always been a SM Stan so I suffered so much when I saw my babies not releasing anything anymore, 4 walls is still one of my favorite songs ever and I remember being obsessed with the MV! I don't know tiny g, mad town or c-clown but I loved secret and fiestar too 🩷, U-kiss was such a special group for me too, they, B.A.P, MBLAQ, teen top and Nu'est would always sound in my playlists 😭, then I liked Winner and Ikon but we all now how YG is... (I still miss 2ne1).

Lately I've been really into Ateez, I never expected to like them this much, I heard about them more than once but they never caught my attention until I saw a reading about this mingi guy and it really sounded like me so I started to think who the fuck are these guys and THANK GOD BECAUSE I LOVE THEM (Yeosang is my current bias wrecker 😭). I haven't listened to their entire albums but I know the most popular songs and I've been putting those long fan playlists to find what I like the most. From other groups I've been listening to Boy next door, but I don't really like them like them, they're not really my style 😭 but I like their music a lot, it's really fresh and I have to admit, they know how to follow a concept! Zb1 is been on my radar too but my problem is I can't say I stan a group unless I find a charm on each member and in both cases I'm just there for the music 🫠, I like certain members (in bonedo no one tho, in zb1 Zhang, Hanbin and Matthew) but just liking a few is not enough for me, in Riize's case I didn't doubt to fall in love with all of them from the minute I saw them, however I have to admit that lately I've been getting a bit distant (maybe that's also a reason for my block?), idk, I miss Seunghan a lot and I haven't liked much their recent songs (boom boom bass is dope tho, I finally adore the song and have been repeating it every day), and I just... I just need more. I need to feel obsessed, to feel my body burning when I see them, my heart jumping when they dance and this desperate yearn to see more of them, but with the pass of time I've just felt the flame going down 😭.

I miss having more of everything. I'm not into moderation at all, so I'm the kind that is all of nothing, once I truly enjoy something I need it until I hate it or until I can't like anything anymore, if I like a tea you'll see me buying 20 bottles to have in storage, if I like a book I'll read everything else the same author writes, if I like a brand I'll go and get what I want, so in terms of k-pop i also need all of it until I can't digest anything else, I need more songs, constant fiction, long stories, a bunch of interactions between them, I just need to be satiated and I haven't been feeling it these days 😭, I still like them of course, I Stan them, but I still think there could be more 🥺.

Kim Se-jeong Taught New Song's Fanchant and Malaysian Fans Were Very Enthusiastic

Hosted by ACO Media and co-organized by METALIVE WORLD and SUNNY SIDE UP, the concert by popular South Korean singer and actress Kim Se-jeong, titled "2023 KIM SEJEONG 1ST CONCERT TOUR “The門” IN KUALA LUMPUR," took place on October 29th at the Mega Star Arena in Kuala Lumpur. The two-and-a-half-hour show was filled with singing, dancing, and interactive moments, providing a delightful experience for her fans, known as “Sesang”.

On her first visit to Malaysia, Kim Se-jeong expressed how she could already feel her fans' warmth at the airport. She dedicated the song "Destiny" to her "Sesang," signifying that they are her "destiny." She further shared that she often thinks of her fans when creating music at night, aiming to bring more energy to them, capturing her fans' hearts instantly.

After performing "Send A Letter," Kim Se-jeong also shared a heartfelt letter she had written for her fans, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support throughout her journey, from her time in the I.O.I. to Gugudan and now as a solo artist.

"In countless greetings, I've learned and grown so much. Without Sesang, who is sitting here with me today, I wouldn't be able to do anything. Throughout the past days, my Sesang has always welcomed me with the same warm embrace. I hope today I can make it a memorable day for my Sesang."

Just come back in early September with her first full-length album "門(Door)," Kim Se-jeong performed her title track "Top or Cliff" at the concert. She also provided tutorials on the fanchants of two songs from her album, "Voyage" and "In The Rain," igniting the atmosphere with her energetic performance.

Additionally, Kim Se-jeong garnered attention for her contributions to the soundtracks of popular Korean dramas like "Business Proposal," "The Uncanny Counter," and "School 2017," showcasing her impressive acting skills. To fulfill her fans' desires, she delivered a medley of her OSTs, including "Meet Again," "If Only," and "All of My Days." During her rendition of the theme song from Business Proposal, "Love, Maybe," she played scenes from the show, allowing fans to relive the romantic drama moments once again.

As the concert neared its end, Kim Se-jeong had a surprise segment in the setlist. She sang snippets from her new album, "Over The Rainbow," as well as cover songs like "Slow Motion" and "Western Sky." She also performed a brief of "Fingertips," a song she sang during her participation in the show "Produce 101." Responding to requests from her fans, she playfully interacted with the audience, even blushing and smiling after delivering some sweet lines, which delighted the crowd with cheers.

After watching a video prepared by her Malaysian fans, Kim Se-jeong expressed her gratitude, saying, "Thank you for the video; I really liked it.
