Are there any animes you recommend watching?
SO these animes are mostly to my own taste, which means that they’re not really high-brow lmao. i tend to like stuff with a strong plot over ones that are too heavily metaphorical, but i tried for a variety (in no particular order) since idk what you like. i tried my best to warn for these, but for some it’s been awhile so i might not catch all of the warnings:
1. baccano - action/thriller that takes place mostly during the 1920s. it’s slightly confusing, because it skips between about 5 different stories that tie together in a “and that’s how we got we got here” kind of overarching story, so it’s worth rewatching more closely. a couple of the “main” storylines include a hostage situation and criminal clashing on a train, a gang turf war, and the pursuit of an immortality serum. there’s a good variety and cast of female and male characters (i’m super gay for a lot of the women).
warnings: there are a couple black characters and chinese characters whose designs and characterizations are mildly off-putting but they’re not consistently present. there is a lot of blood, mild gore and body horror, and a lot of death. there are a couple relationships that could be read as abusive or manipulative. there’s a threat made that sounds like a sexual assault threat (no actual sexual assault happens). there’s some violence toward/torture of (not sexual) a character who’s physically a child, most of it non-explicit. there’s mentions of torture in general. there’s an instance of animal cruelty against a mouse during an experiment. none of it really felt edgy or over-the-top to me.
2. tsuritama - slice-of-life and coming of age meets sports anime meets aliens. just four friends fishing together to save the world. that’s basically the plot. super simple, but for me the charm lies in the development of character relationships and ~the power of friendship.~ the main character has (what’s commonly accepted among the fandom as) social anxiety, and it’s treated with sensitivity. the main characters are all guys.
warnings: there’s an indian character who gets some “whacky foreigner” stereotypes, but he’s a well-rounded character imo. a somewhat-significant character has an illness, but they don’t die (there are no character deaths the whole series). a child gets slapped, and while the slapper apologizes to them i don’t think they did a very good job lol.
3. little witch academia - fun and cute slice-of-life/fantasy. witches go to magic school, basically. the first season is episodic, and introduces some really fun characters, before the plot kicks in around the second season. it focuses mainly around the schoolgirls (who aren’t sexualized, which is surprising for studio trigger) and their relationships, so while there are some moments, it’s mainly uncomplicated and lighthearted.
warnings: i only watched this once so i can’t particularly remember any. but, again, it’s a lighthearted anime, and nothing terrible happens.
4. mob psycho 100 - the main character, mob, is just a normal kid who worries about friends and crushes except he’s also probably the strongest psychic in the world. i find mp100 to be really funny and cute, and it integrates the psychic powers into the usual growing-up problems very well. it typically oscillates between slice-of-life with more plotty and action-centered arcs. there are really strong and well-done themes about violence, forgiveness, and self-worth.
warnings: there’s a transmisogynistic “man in a skirt” gag early on in season 1 (it doesn’t recur). in season 2, there’s a minor sideplot that involves sexual harassment (clearly framed as bad), an extended sequence of bullying, and a character who is abused by his father. uhh that’s all i can remember, but i also only watched this once.
5. revolutionary girl utena - very surreal and metaphorical, with a much more concentrated focus on overarching themes than plots. that’s why it’s kind of hard to describe RGU’s plot, but basically... two girls’ relationship & individual development as one becomes the ‘prince’ to the other’s ‘bride’ and they duel fellow students for the power to ‘revolutionize the world.’ it’s extremely rich in symbolism and commentary on misogyny, framed through the lens of fairytale stories, so it might not be your thing if you’re into more plot-oriented stuff like i am, but it’s a classic and worth a watch.
warnings: refer to this guide since it’s much more detailed.
6. mononoke - short, one-season anime divided into five mini-arcs about a medicine seller who exorcises mononoke (i guess a kind of spirit). every arc is kind of a procedural to untangle the reason behind a mononoke’s death and its lingering presence. the art is super unique and beautiful here, and it’s an interesting repurposing of japanese folklore.
warnings: mentions of abortion in one arc, mentions of incestuous feelings in one arc, familial abuse in one arc, death in general, sometimes some body horror
some i haven’t watched but heard good things about and maybe will get around to someday: princess tutu, nana, michiko to hatchin, bloom into you, sarazanmai
