Knowing What You're Worth... And Why the HECK that is so Important

I walked into my first interview for a guard position saying 'oh, I don't care what you pay me'... and what was the problem with that? Well, not only was I an instructor, a choreographer, a drill designer, and a babysitter, but I was a music editor, video editor, driver, costume designer, seamstress, and at times, cook, for my kids. When something so wholly takes up your life, like a job in teaching--color guard, or any subject matter--it is important to tally your hours and request accordingly! Especially as your position is usually based differently than any part-time jobs you'll encounter. They can always say no, this is true. BUT if you don't ask, you will never know, AND these are usually shimmy-up-and-down-until-we-meet-somewhere-in-the-middle things, and not just complete rejections. It's useful to check out sites that grade the school and the area around it for an accurate wealth check--not that you're digging for money, but so that you're realistic in what the school, the area, and the school district are able to afford to keep you. How it works usually, is that you work out a solid number you expect/they're willing to pay for the season. Where I've been located, I've had the option to be paid about 1/6 of the amount every two weeks with the rest of the district employees for the months of the season, or to be paid in a lump sum at the end of the season. You also need to critically think about what it is you require of yourself on the job before your superiors start listing expectations. Define your own parameters in the confines of your job title and stick to it! ie. I'm not going to stay after the football game performances, because I am not a baby sitter. I am an instructor.  Be honest about your time commitments and about how far you're willing to go for your kids! You're there because you want to spread a passion.
