Day 0: July 4, in the PM
Our rooters meet Bekah Olstead (Boulder Colorado / Doumen 斗門) and our leader our leader Frances Kwong (San Fransisco / Toisan) at Hung Hom train station. Together with Jess, David, and Jennifer, they all train to Guangzhoudong on the mainland. Closer and closer to their roots they go!
Once there, they check into the overseas Chinese university where they spend a night in the dorms as they await the rest of the rooters. At the uni, Wayne Yeh (Boston / Huizhou 惠州) rears his distinctively clownish head out of the dorm window, surprising the rest of the troupe.
Wayne is one of 3 rooters the group had never seen in person. “Screeching” and squealing and exciteding ensued as we experienced our first Roots-enabled family reunion.
Next we had dinner about a 5 minute walk away from the school. Pictured here is the school front, the best selfie of all time, the rooster dishware of our first China restaurant, and happenstance food we feasted on.
Food from as best we can describe it in limited Chinese-English comprehension:
a soupy bowl of meat with a lot of thin lil pea sprouts?
not-orange-chicken orange chicken
DURIAN FRIED PANCAKE
the dankening: a big bowl of sour veggie FISH stew
“love soup” — that’s what the menu called it — which is the liquid that’s in our mugs (some kind of herbal soup)
eggy tofu-y something
potato strip goodness that is Bekah’s favorite
Very flavorful. Very impressive. Impossible to believe it could go upwards from there.
About $4 USD a person.
Fun fact: we ended up with at least 3 different soupy dishes without realizing what we ordered. The menu was in Chinese, which Wayne had to collab with the waitress in Putonghua to translate for us. All that soup but the only ladle anything came with looked like this:
