2019 Writing Goals

The always lovely & supportive @allwaswell16 tagged me to talk about my 2019 writing goals... and I feel like at the moment I can’t separate those goals from what happened in 2018. 

So, in 2018 I had a whole list of fics that I thought I was going to write. I had timelines and guestimated word counts and went into the year fully believing that I was going to set out to do what I planned to do. I had also signed up for GTWO and pledged to write 200k words, which seemed doable after my 2017 posted word count. My entire plan went to shit at about mid-February last year. And I completed very little of what i set out to do. 

Last year... was not a great writing year for me. I felt like I spent a lot of the year frustrated. There was a lot of crying. And I know that I had significantly fewer hits/kudos/bookmarks/comments in 2018 than in 2017. And the fics that people did really respond to, were not the fics that meant a lot to me. Even though I knew that only like 10 people would be interested in my poly fic, I poured so much into it, and even though I knew it wasn’t going to be popular, I still had like a tiny hope that maybe people would take a chance on it and love it? And it still sucks that it didn’t get the reception I secretly hoped it would get. WHICH IS FINE. (2018 was also me typing IT IS FINE to @fullonlarrie at least once a day and doing a lot of justifying how I was feeling.) All this to say that still the greatest writing moment of the year was when I realized I had actually finished it and was really fucking proud of it. 

So, I hope to harness that feeling more in 2019. I want to be really really really proud of the fics I write, and I want to not care if no one reads them*. I realize this is a stupid goal because of course I’m going to care if no one reads them*. But I want to really care about the fics I write, like a bone deep passion that they’re my favorite things to read in 2019. 

I think I’m starting the year off right? 

I’m currently working on my @onedirectionbigbang fic and thanks to @disgruntledkittenface I’m super happy with the direction it’s going. I keep making myself snort-laugh as I’m writing and I think there’s also a lot of heart in it. When I think about it, it makes me smile. Which, is like, really good, I think.

I have an idea for my @1dshortficfest fic. It’s something I’m super pumped about and really scared to write because I don’t know if I can pull it off, but the idea of trying to pull it off is really exciting. 

I’d also really like to write an advent fic. But I say that every single year and I’ve never done it. I’d for sure have to be done with it by Dec 1 then just post a bit each day instead of writing on the fly, so there’s just some planning that needs to happen to succeed at that. 

Other than that... I signed up for GYWO again this year, but instead of a word count I pledged writing days. I’m hoping this will get me to focus on concentrating and outlining and tinkering with fics that I’m really passionate about, instead of just feeling like I need to bang out a whole bunch of words to get to a self-imposed goal. I’m starting this year with a clean slate and not feeling like I need to work on past stories or ideas that I was continually failing at. It feels really great. I don’t know what’s going to pique my interest this year! We’ll see what happens!

Mostly, I think I just want writing to bring me happiness and I’d love to stop comparing myself to others, including my past works, because that does not bring me joy. 

Right, so onwards to a joy-filled 2019. 

*I know I’m being dramatic about this and that people will read my fics. But not all of the people. Which I do know is unrealistic, but here we are, being honest on tumblr dot com.
