James Weldon Johnson, who was born June 17, 1871, was an American author, politician, diplomat, critic, journalist, poet, anthologist, educator, lawyer, songwriter, and early civil rights activist. His writing includes collections of poetry, spirituals and folklore from the black community, but he is best known for his book, originally published anonymously to protect his diplomatic career, “The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man”. Johnson was appointed by Theodore Roosevelt as US consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua in 1906 having earlier campaigned for Roosevelt.
