Happy Pink Full Moon! The sky may not be this color, but it's a good reminder to focus on our relationships. The moon is not jealous of the ocean's relationship with the wind. Nor is the ocean upset by the amount of time the moon is bathed by the sun. Earth, wind, water, and fire all coexist in harmony here in the cosmos, let us emulate their perfect relationship! Join us at bit ly/sos2bliss and learn to grow and build the love of your life. #fridayvibes #fullmoonlight #fullmoonritual #pinkfullmoon #judgementfree #controlemotions #relationships #growyourownway #jealousy #pulloftheocean #earthwindwaterfire #fire #harmony #awaken #awakenings #sos2bliss https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwb1XXnBagu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=13hf2b0zylmuv

Proudly Hypocritical
I am a hypocrite. It’s a strange thing to admit to, and probably more strange to be proud of. Somehow we found ourselves living in a binary world. One where you are either wholly for something or wholly against it. Ambivalence, unfortunately, is a dying virtue. Too many people can’t find solace in the journey toward finding something out and being incorrect along the way. It seems like we are all too keen to nail our colours to the mast as early as possible. I think we are different. We quite like the idea of putting loads of trial and error into our farming practices. We thrive on the errors. Not to the point where we aim for them, but we are more than happy to be proved wrong. The operative word there being ‘proved’. Anecdotal evidence is evidence in our book. Particularly if the starting point is, “Are you sure about that? Let’s see?”.
How does that make you a hypocrite? Well honestly, I’m not sure where we sit on the spectrum of farming. Not having a farming tribe, makes you do things differently. We don’t come anywhere close to the feedlots. They disgust us, but we do understand the argument that people would rather buy cheap meat than no meat at all. Leaving aside the unattributed external costs, it’s their main argument. We also don’t plant by the lunar calendar. It’s all a little weird for us. We plant everything in our kitchen garden organically, but we do so with organic pesticides. The dead pests seem less than thrilled with our distinction. Still on balance it makes sense to us.

Our fermented chili sauce is on the menu
We believe in regenerative agriculture, but what we think that means and what others think that means, is likely different. Our Basic premise is that whatever leaves our farm gate will need to be replaced in one form or another. We do our best to grow that replacement or bring it in in a natural form. Without putting too blunt a point on it, we do so with our self-interest in mind. I want our farm to be better tomorrow that is was yesterday. I want it to produce more, for less money, with less effort. I think that letting nature be nature is the best long term solution to that calculation. I believe in complex systems sorting out complex problems. I haven’t used glyphosate since our first drought. I haven’t used GMO or even hybrid maize seed either. I haven’t been in a position to be able to afford to. Anecdotally, I think we are better off for it. I did however hire out some of my lands to someone who has a different view on things and they were keen to take advantage of the short season with all chemical intervention possible. I would have preferred to plant it ourselves. Getting financing for a business like ours is more difficult than the growing and running combined.

Our Pig Paddocks, they need a little electrifying then are good to go.
Farming is a high risk business. Some people believe that to mitigate that risk you need to use all the tools at your disposal. Chemicals being one such tool. I was having a candid conversation with a farmer friend who believes that chemicals are a godsend. Beer makes my social filters malfunction. I laid out my usual arguments about the barriers to entry, the lock in to that system, the costs to do so, growing capital, the degradation of farm land, adverse climate effects, not to mention it’s sustainability. His reply was simple. There is no point in having a low impact farm if you don’t own it because you went bang. He has a point.
The conundrum of feeding huge swathes of plants on a large scale has always been a stumbling block for us. We have recently converted one of our old farrow pens into a worm farm. Being an ex-indoor piggery we have loads of them if we need to scale up. The idea is that we can percolate water through them resulting in a liquid fertilizer we can spray on or crop lands. To date it has not worked, and is taking far more time than I thought it would. We maybe wrong, we are very excited to find out if we are. In the meantime I have spread some fertilizer on our maize and sorghum. If we need to top dress with fertilizer, we will we are hypocritical like that.
