Beginnings & Endings - Growing Up

This post is about characters who don’t have a backstory. What I mean by that is finding out any backstory elements change nothing about them. They didn’t beat someone to the point they lost hearing in one ear. No dead girlfriends, no tragedies, no abusive parents. We know all that they know about their past.

(Note: Emma’s dad doesn’t count, as we got to experience Emma finding this out.)

All these characters are built entirely from the events in the story and how those shape them. What they do, what they fail to do, who they love, who they hate, who they lose in the series. Everything that happens with them, or to them, redefines them as the series presses on. This is all four of the Grade 8s in TNG S1, this is Darcy, this is Clare, Alli, and Connor. This is Maya, Tris, Tori, and (sorta) Zig.

Some things are Constant

Alright, everything I had said in the other Beginnings & Endings post also matters. Hurting friends matters more and cuts deeper than hurting strangers, what you do at the end of your run matters more than what you do (or more often fail to do) earlier on. How quickly and how fully they regret matters.

But what changes is the timeline, there is no excusing of past crap behavior with new information, there is just what the character does with it. Emma’s reaction to Rick’s death is to become a generally awful human being, and that’s relateable. She went through something harsh and it changed her, for the worse. Manny went through something harsh and she decided she didn’t want to be ‘cute’ anymore. That’s... more of a lateral move than a straight positive or negative.

Consistency is Key

What matters more here, for these characters, is a consistency to their actions even if the magnitude changes. Maya Matlin threw herself away for the happiness of others as early as her introduction. Tori getting closure mattered more than Maya getting the boy, and that’s what Maya did. It got... worse... as things progressed. Cause now instead of ‘someone is suffering’ it became ‘someone is definitely going to die.’ But there’s still a consistent choice pattern.

Emma stands up, Manny fights, J.T. jokes, Toby worries, Clare moralizes, Maya rescues, Tris is catty.

But Emma’s standing up changes after Rick. Manny’s fight changes after her abortion. J.T.’s ability to keep joking gets harder after Liberty gets pregnant, and Toby worries more after Rick... and J.T. Clare’s morals shift after her parent’s divorce, and Maya’s sense of scale gets blown up by Cam. And Tris... is still catty.

Old Scars shine Through

A major component in this is that as much as they gain something from their choices, they also lose something. Compare Maya smiling in NC4 to any of her smiles in early S12. Compare Emma’s attitude in TNG1 to TNG7. Each time they nearly lost everything about themselves, they still lose something. This is true of the other characters, but we don’t see those trade-offs happen. We don’t have before and afters.

We don’t know who Tiny was before the gang, we don’t know Bianca before living with her aunt. We don’t know Lola with her mom around, or Miles before his abuse. This lack of context, lack of comparative before and after changes how the character can be treated narratively. It also leads to some interesting comparisons to how someone who watched during S11 sees the characters when you see how someone who watched only NC sees the same group.

The writing hasn’t changed, but that first impact of the character is just gone. Zoe at her worst, Maya at her youngest, Tris at his most vulnerable.

How much they take is how much they Grow

Naturally some characters have huuuuuge waves thrown at them over the course of the show, and other characters have very little. Toby does not have the level of change Emma or Manny has. Because Toby didn’t get the number of plots Emma and Manny got. And his plots were rarely as... life changing, as the girls.

...Except J.T.’s death but the aftermath was not handled well!

Even if I didn’t mention him too much, probably the king of this growing up and growing better arc is Spinner. Spinner is just... that boy went through so much, and none of it broke him. He also had the furthest to go, as TNG1 Spinner is the least mature (even less mature than J.T. and Toby) and TNG9 Spinner has really gotten himself sorted out. Even if he married Emma.

Yes I still don’t have an issue with that choice.
