Shidou is the one who teaches Sae that it's okay to have boundaries in relationships and helps him feel safe, if you even care. Sae is used to being hit on, touched by fans and interviewers since he was 11. Sae is used to people wanting him and his body and his fame. He can handle that aspect of Shidou.

What really gets him is when Shidou starts asking questions. There's no expectations and yet he asks if this or that is okay, he calls him just to ask how he's doing. Sae gets this throbbing anxiety in his chest whenever he wants something as simple as a hug. Afterall, he's the badass soccer prodigy. He shouldn't crave affection when he has such a fulfilling career. Or at least that's what he believes until his new boyfriend gently slips his hand into his at a cafe. And suddenly he's remembering all the time he spent denying his sexuality, all the times men and women so much more experienced than him told him to just suck up his pain because this was all the love he was going to get. All the times he felt unsafe expressing the slightest bit of affection for another man in public and intentionally distanced himself.

It's like you don't even like me, his past flings would whine. Why do you flinch away, his exes chided. They simply hadn't seen what he had, hadn't heard the locker room talk about what one of his teammates would do if he found out he was on a team with a queer person. Shidou scares Sae sometimes with his loud makeup and dyed hair. But damn, does he feel like home. His hand is warm too, feeding Sae's skin hunger. That comfort doesn't stop him from slipping out of his grasp and shoving his hand in his pocket though, glancing around to see who saw them.

Shidou just smiles and leans back. Sae doesn't have to apologize or say anything. He doesn't know what Sae's been through yet, but he can feel the anxiety coming off of him in waves. He doesn't know this yet, but he's the first person who's been gentle with Sae. Who understands that jumping hugs and private comments look much different off the field. No, he doesn't take offense when Sae flinches at pda, and that just makes Sae want him more.

Spoilers for Medalist 59+60, just a post-chapter rambling, DO NOT READ IF YOU'RE AVOIDING SPOILERS FOR THE NEWEST CHAPTERS.

To be honest, when I saw the chapter preview for 59 I thought it was gonna be like, a smooth skate for Inori and she leaves early to see Iruka... I THOUGHT the panels were Inori exiting the hospital and Hikaru all anxious looking because of the results of their skate.

What instead happens is more heartwrenching than I ever could've imagined. BUT BY GOD THE YURI. THE RIVALRY. ITS SO REAL. IT REALLY IS THAT SERIOUS TO THEM BOTH.

THE COMPOSITION, THE LIGHT, THE WORLD THAT ONLY EXISTS TO THE TWO OF THEM.

Chapter 50 just leaves me speechless. This far we've seen Hikaru try to cope with heavy changes to her life: a change in clubs and complete upheaval in social heirarchy, no longer staying with her family, and even a recent injury. In her attempts to find normalcy, she's using black and white thinking: if I don't win gold, I promised I'd quit and Yodaka Jun would stop coaching me. Yodaka Jun believes in sacrifices, so I will give everything up to see what he meant by those words.

For Inori to mean something to me, for her to enchant me, she must be a similar lifeform to Yodaka Jun.

While I can say this whole arc makes Hikaru one of my favourite female characters ever written of all time, this arc is meant to illustrate one simple point: that Hikaru wouldn't be the skater she is without Inori. To the point that Hikaru, whose motivation to skate was to "see (the world) that Yodaka Jun sees", has finally decided:

"Today, I am breaking out of the cage."

I don't think there could've been a more meaningful chapter 50 to start the new year with. Medalist is so chock full of story that it's almost hard for me to believe there's not even a hundred chapters already, but it's definitely because sensei gets done in two chapters what would've taken an SJ cunt 10.

I've seen it pointed out that at the moment, Inori is surrounded by people who love and support her, while Hikaru has nobody. It was meant as a joke, but it's really one of the main themes of this arc: Hikaru and Yodaka Jun, sacrificing family, comfort, personhood to earn gold. Tsukasa, who doesn't believe that Inori has to sacrifice her life to win gold, and Inori, who asked: am I too pampered? Isn't this cheating? For Iruka to reassure her that it's perfectly fine for her to be the way she is, that she was also a skater who bloomed after she was loved, only for Iruka to get injured and Inori to perform probably the worst she's ever done it. Now it's Hikaru's turn to pluck the fruits of her labor: can the new her continue to captivate Inori?

Very intense, and I'm very excited for Hikaru to be proactive for her own sake: to prove her existence to Inori, and continue to bewitch the only other girl in her world. While it's been so funny to see other skaters mitigate their interactions (because they misunderstand Inori and Hikaru and think they'll, what, start a catfight? LOL) it makes it all the more endearing and refreshing when they get to do what they've always done: be completely head over heels and psycho about each other. Ahh, I'm so excited for the future chapters. 10000/10, Hikaru is so smitten with Inori it's soooooo cute.

When Soap retires from the army, he ends up getting a job coaching a little kids' gaelic football team and he takes this shit so fucking seriously.

He coaches the under 10s team, which means that it's still mixed boys and girls, but he gets those kids so enthusiastic about everything. The local community around the club he trains for absolutely love him because A, he's really good with all the kids and B, its extremely funny to see a large man yell after little kids and be so invested in this sport.

He does swear at the kids, though, like all the time. He will call the opposing team wee shites and will call his own team little pricks. He's been told again and again that no, John, you can't call these kids little pussies but he doesn't listen. It encourages them and makes them laugh.

He had an assistant once, a teenager who took on the role for work placement for about a week and by the end of it she just looked at him and went "How the fuck do you do this everyday??" And Soap laughed in her face and said something like, "These kids are so much better than the cadets I used to train," and thats how everyone finds out that Soap uses the same techniques on these 9 year olds that he did on army cadets and suddenly it makes sense why his team all salute him in a straight line before a match.
