Mihalis [False Colors @elsabet-writes]

Mihalis is a blood mage who became a business major so he wouldn’t have to beat people up, only to shatter his pacifist ideals when he hit finals. He’s the best in his chosen field, but he’s also bitter and vengeful, and more than a little sleep deprived. He runs on caffeine and the desire to crush his enemies. Mihalis is tall and dark, but missed handsome by a mile and has made up for it by sheer force of personality. However, his tendency to glower arrogantly at all and sundry is not so much down to his self-important disposition as much as the fact that he SHOULD be wearing glasses and refuses to. (Because having them hang around his neck on a beaded chain would tarnish his image and he loses them otherwise.) (He doesn’t actually wear a three piece suit in the story setting, but my sister is the artist, and he’s wearing a suit in the reference picture she used, so my world building explanation is that he is visiting someone from a culture where they DO wear three piece suits, and is not only disgusted by the very concept of a necktie, but also utterly horrified at how small their coffee cups are.)

Max Way [Sons of the Star @thegreenleavesofspring]

Max Way is the leader of a biker gang and a vigilante who fights human trafficking in his home city. He is gruff, violent, fierce, and fiercely honorable. His creed is to always protect women, children, the innocent, and the weaker, and he rules his six younger brothers with a rod of iron.

Why do some of your oc's have male disguises? (Not trying to be mean, sorry if my question already has been answered😅)

When I had a backstory of my AU Nonsurat which I added she/her (not cannon) I wasn’t sure how I would put into a story on that til my mind where she was join into Fighting Group when I heard about girls disguises as male I wasn’t quite sure and wasn’t interested til my mind anyways according to my OC Nebula backstory when she was done rehearsing her show at the old theater during the play and her being a dancer til she heard the alert of NME coming and where he takes female puffballs because he saw them as weak that girls can’t do anything like male puffballs that wanted to be treated fairly not special treatment.

Nebula parents I would say they were firm, worried about their kids being in danger, supportive and loving but unfortunately nebula didn’t find her parents and I’m not saying they’re dead but absent ever since the chaos happen. :0

even though GSA let female puffballs and any species to be in GSA but there are some criticism some parents that won’t support female puffballs. Some of them their old roots like my AU Nonsurat as they have the old roots of "boys are strong and girls are weak" that kind of thing :0

For Nebula when she felt being defeated by NME and monster attack her she thought she was worthless and not good enough to be strong warrior but then she has to disguise herself as a male to save everyone and honor her little sister Starla who died from NME plus had to give up her dreams.

When she works on the disguise none of the monsters and NME can tell they are secretly female in disguise if they were exposed to be female then NME would capture and corrupt them like how Knuckle Joe Father aka Jecra were. But the fighting group can show their hair if they want but being careful with disguise coming off.

And so Nebula would have filers to join fighting group and no she is not against GSA nor Arthur. Let’s say that couple of female puffballs are in GSA and no one can tell by it gender and their voice changer being male whether it’s deep, low, husky, high pitch boy, and masculine appearance. Nebula would support anyone and no matter what age if they were kids, teenagers, young adult, adults, and elder .

Fighting group has to be better safe then sorry to save themselves from NME. Nebula is the leader of the group and has the right handed warrior whose name Sir Solar aka Solaria who helps her as a general of course they treated each other like family. They use their initials as Sir or they changed their name but not pressure by Nebula though she respect their boundaries and ways.

In the future of my comic it will be shown how they got corrupt and how it started without any bad but keep it as friendly and how would the stories goes.

My name is Wadih and I am from Gaza. On October 7th my family of seven was hit by an Israeli airstrike that destroyed our home. We miraculously survived the attack and headed to the UNRWA shelter school thinking it was safer. How come this place was also bombed, forcing us to flee to safer areas.

Our lives have changed so much that I have become extremely sensitive to smoke and phosphorus, and I have started to suffer from problems with my respirators. To this day, I still suffer from the effects of exposure to phosphorus, and I have not found any treatment to alleviate my mental acuity, which is getting worse day by day.

After fleeing to Al-Mawasi, we now live in a very small tent. We have no home, no food, and we are not living a humane life at all. Our livelihood has been cut off.

My dream was to protect my family and provide them with the simplest necessities of life, but hope was destroyed, and my dream ended forever.

I am appealing to anyone with a sense of humanity to help me flee to a safe place. Helping my family to provide food, drink, clean place and support to continue and unify my dream. I need 40 thousand pounds to travel abroad and my family outside Gaza,

The Mecha

Meet The Mecha!

Born around Osaka, Japan, the Mecha is the not-so-typical nerdy girl with her gigantic robots and mech suits and a reserved personality. When you need a tank to absorb bullets and protect a team, she is one of your best bets. With her 20-foot mech suit, her shield, and machine gun, she can become quite a threat to the enemy team. She is best used to lead a charge and absorb potential damage for her teammates, with her mech’s HP being 400 (overheal being 550).

Mecha’s main weakness is (like Heavy’s) her lack of speed. Because of her large mech size, she is unable to run off quickly from danger (especially when firing her machine gun or spreading her shield). But! When she uses her ability, Auto-Pilot, this isn’t an issue anymore.

Auto-Pilot is Mecha’s ultimate ability and must be charged up by the amount of damage she shields from her teammates. Auto-Pilot is when Mecha puts her mech on “auto-pilot” and jumps out of her mech to fight in the battle on her own. She isn’t fully vulnerable though, as her speed is only slightly lower than the Scout’s (120%) and she has her trusty Tachi sword which can do a lot of damage in the right circumstance.

Mecha’s typical primary weapon is her machine gun (while in mech), out of mech her primary weapon is a Glock 17 (full-sized handgun). Mecha’s typical secondary weapon is an AR-15 (in mech and out of mech). Her typical melee weapon is either her Tachi sword or her Katana.

Mecha was born in Osaka, Japan. The exact location is unknown, even to Mecha herself. She has lived only with her single father, and Mecha has been told that her mother passed away from childbirth and her father doesn’t like talking much about it, so that’s all she knows. She was raised with the intention that one day she’d become a mercenary. And that is what happened. She started doing mercenary work alongside her father at the young age of 13. She would use her high intellect and passion for robotics and machinery to aid her in battle. Things she’d create such as new and “improved” weapons she had stolen from her dad, drones, etc.

After years of her mercenary work she one day, at the age of 16, presented her first ever mech suit to a robotics fair in Tokyo and was asked to move to Australia and learn more about robotics and engineering there. She took the offer and stayed in school for 3 years. After 3 years of schooling, she surprised her dad one day by visiting him and telling him how she’d continue mercenary work with his help.

Now her father after a few years of working with him, wants Mecha to go off on her own without him. Hence why she's now applying to work at the RED team!

Being made as a literal personification of a class role is a difficult thing to manage by, so why not try out your abilities in a tournament? He was made to kill afterall! and he doesnt lose anything if he loses, he can respawn!

Currently he lives making videoblogs to try and get to know what he actually likes at all, living with a group of other freaks like him, he's supposed to be a scout, a mercenary, he tries to not feel alienated from not knowing anything about being an actual human person like everyone else

Hopper & Hank (he/him) from @raddest-laddest

Hopper: born to be a banjo man, forced to be a bounty hunter. He and his ragtag team used to go around the wild wastes looking for their next paycheck

Hank: used to be a bandit until he was ditched by his gang… he won’t forgive or forget.

One night Hopper and his crew happened upon a recently abandoned Hank, and recognizing him almost instantly, they decided to take him prisoner. Sand storm happened, Hopper (now separated from the rest of his crew) is left alone with Hank, and they end up having to work together to meet their changing goals :]

Charon (he/him) from @flame-shadow

Just a regular guy who likes to hang out in the City :)

...is what he wants you to think. Really, he's a clever serial killer who enjoys stalking his prey and killing them. It's good fun! There's quite the thrill in a successful kill. And the fear of getting caught adds some extra spice to his days. He does spend time doing regular activities too, such as visiting food stands, going out with bugs, sharpening his blade prosthetic, etc. He can be quite charming when he wants to be, a useful benefit of charisma, but he generally only turns that on for manipulation purposes.

When he's not being an awful person in the City, he's being a slightly more tolerably awful person in the Crystal Mines where he works as a supervisor for exploratory mining excursions to find crystal veins with unique properties. Over the past few years, his crew has experienced some injury and a few accidental deaths which is, of course, regrettable but entirely within reason for the dangers of the job.

Charon gets his comeuppance when a group of miners have had enough and kill him. They throw his corpse into a crystal chasm. Unfortunately, the crystals down there were special, and they bonded to his body as he bleed out, causing him to come back as a crystallized corpse with autonomy and no regard for self-preservation. Such is life!

Billie Way neé Knows-the-Ground [Clans of the Coyote-Girl @ The_Anonymous_Coauthor]

A former teen mom and cocaine addict, Billie smacked into the wrong person in an intersection and got landed in jail for two years, leaving her eldest daughter Nikki to try and bail her out and take care of Billie's other three children. After Riser Way bails her out, she begins trying to get her life together and become a good mother to her children. When Riser Way proposes in order to facilitate taking care of the children, she accepts, and must learn over again how to be a good wife, as the bleak winter of deprivation and hard times thaws into a spring of abundant love.

Black [System Collapse @chrystallink]

Black is a pretty nice and chill guy, also rather timid. He's simply a normal guy with a small gaming vlog, no cool gadgets or powers, or anything. He works in a local arcade, cleaning up and doing maintenance to the gaming cabinets. After a chance encounter, DeathScreen became interested in him, and...well, started messing with him hard whenever they happened to cross paths. Black is terrified of him as a result.

I appreciate your efforts to get all the tracks named, despite all the variation across sources and occasional missing info! (I don't know Japanese either used to have katakana and hiragana memorized but I've forgotten like half of each, so I can't comment on accuracy, but I at least definitely appreciate the internal consistency!)

I wish you the best of luck with both getting your diagnosis sorted, and with the brain-wrangling afterward! Being locked in creative block sucks. D: Also time is fake, what even is keeping track of years, time blindness is apparently an ADHD symptom it's all good. It's great that new folks are still discovering and getting into fun old shows like YYH! And massive kudos to your girlfriend, it sounds like she was SO right in recommending it to you (and why). And I am DELIGHTED that you did indeed make a "same picture" meme in that Hiei/Shadow comparison post, that's perfect. XD

I can't remember who all I've drawn from YYH...I think I've maybe tried (and struggled with) Yusuke? But I've definitely drawn Karasu a fair bit, and I know I've drawn Yukina a few times, too. (I think the two of them I can almost draw from memory, but would likely miss a few details.) And maybe Jin a bit too? In any case, I wish us both luck eventually mustering the creative energy to draw them again, and I'd love to see yours when you do! <3

With crochet, I can do like...the basic single chain, and that's about it. XD I struggle with reading stitches/figuring out what to pick up in order to do more than that. And intellectually I understand the process of the "single crochet" stitch (because it creates a "single" stack), but like. Instinctively speaking, why's it two loops?? It feels like such a misnomer, haha. I also struggle horribly with yarn tension...I keep making things waaaay too tight. Which is also not necessarily wise for knitting, but at least the needle's there the whole time to at least keep it relatively consistent between stitches. >_>' But fingers crossed that you also have the energy to start crocheting again soon, and that diving back in is super fun! (Also, what sort of things have you made, if you don't mind me asking? There's a shockingly huge variety of things you can turn a long bit of string into. :D) Re: patternmaking, I'd initially just started out with relatively simple alterations to existing patterns, like swapping out an increase type I didn't like doing for one I did. But then I ran into a couple small patterns that were like...good for what they were, but I realized were waaaay different from how I'd approach that same thing? So "alterations" turned into "start from scratch (and get stuck in forever-testing-and-retesting ad nauseam)." I'm slow as hell from the perfectionism to find the Exact Right Methods, but I think I'll be satisfied when I finally finish getting these patterns sorted out someday!

ASdlfkj AHAHAHAHA oh man some of those memes genuinely got me cackling aloud. XD Thank you for linking that tag, it was great to go through. I don't have a good setup to make a gif meme, but there's one point where Genkai floats and flips Yusuke upside down, and I can't help but see it as the shark "GET ROTATED IDIOT" meme. Though Yusuke gets rolled along the ground so often, there's a LOT of clips you could use of him for it. XD (Oh yeah, I think you mentioned in there once or twice that Hiei is a cat, and absolutely agree 100% yes, I wrote out a whole list for a friend once pointing out the big and small cat-like things he does. And it is WAY easier to read him if you're familiar with reading cat body language.) Also, that's an excellent reason to start collecting the frames and absolutely fair to end up stuck every now and then just making heart eyes once Hiei starts showing up. (Also also, the friend I mentioned is science-y and also loves Kurama, so I took like...20+ screenshots of that one scene where he's in a labcoat in his quiet after-school club, 'cause friend hadn't seen past the Dark Tournament yet either, and it was so hard to find screenshots of. I know it'll take a while, since the series is so long, but I look forward to when you get to that scene so I can link them even better quality stills! <3)

Best of luck finding good sites to host the scripts on, and wise to plan to set it up in more than one place! (I also suggest, once you get it going, popping each page's link into the Wayback Machine as you go, as a third/backup source!)

AND YES, THE DANCE MIX DIALOGUE IS SO GOOD. I do think all the CD dialogue stuff collectively kinda feels like a very slight AU/minor divergence from the anime (as the anime is from the manga, from what I know of the differences between them still gotta go read it...). But it's all so funny, and I love the little bits of character development Hiei got in them. Like how he's SUCH a smug little shit when he brags to Yusuke about his own song being the one that was requested. Look at him go, learning how to socialize outside of battle! And arguing the way you'd expect between bickering brothers!! (That drawn-out "damare~" especially. Such a brat, but also said in a tone I'd never expect from him during the anime. I'm so proud. Now go tell Yukina you're her brother, she CLEARLY knows and already loves you dearly, you goober.) OH OH OH and when Kuwabara messes with everyone and acts like he died to a rain of spears! There's nothing I could catch that specifically indicates it on the CD, but. I can't help thinking that Kurama was in on it with him, and was just acting stressed out to help sell the joke, like he has a few times in the anime. >:D I'm also delighted to hear that "computer destruction" is apparently among the list of similarities Hiei has with Shadow. That's so funny. XD I could absolutely see Hiei going to "hack" a computer with his sword.

And yeah, there's a handful of other YYH characters I like a lot, but. Hiei and Kurama are definitely at the top of my list for this series, hahaha. (I'm kiiinda tempted to also recommend Yu-Gi-Oh!, if you haven't seen it? Primarily because Bakura (all fuckin' three of him) parallels so well with Kurama (all two of him). I'm not sure Marik fits quite as well into the archetype Hiei and Shadow do wrong color scheme at the least, but he's still fun and spiky and stabby and trauma and a delight. And with both characters you get the same "there is no straight explanation for ANY of this"...though that's arguably also the series as a whole. XD It probably won't hit quite as hard as Kurahi did, but I think there's a decent bit of overlap you might still enjoy. I will say the manga storyline does a bit of a better job sticking with a cohesive plot order, since the anime caught up while it was in progress and had to buy time with a couple original arcs that don't flow as smoothly. It also skipped adapting the early chapters, which were generally darker and had (Yami) Bakura's initial intro as a delightful TTRPG DM sadistic nightmare man, which bookends nicely with him ending the series in almost exactly the same way. But both versions are good if you're interested in watching/reading, and no worries if not!)

Alas, I personally don't tend to click much with fan playlists (my tastes are possibly too narrow/I have trouble seeing a given song in the same way as indicated? I dunno D:), but I love that it's a thing people do! I don't generally sort out proper series/character playlists for myself either, but I do absolutely once in a while listen to a song and go "oh shit, this really fits [thing/person(s)]." I'm blanking right now on whether I've run across any songs that are actually fitting for YYH, but I do remember one that like. I wish the lyrics worked, because the title/chorus line is SO WEIRDLY PERFECT?? Tears of Pearls by Savage Garden is just. It seems like it should be amazing for Yukina, but it's a romantic type song and she's got such ace/aro vibes...asldkjf oh hell I just checked the lyrics and I'd been mishearing, it's "stolen pearls" not "stone and pearls" so OOPS it might actually fit completely for Hiei and Kurama, if you assume Hiei can make hiruiseki? So uh. That is an actual proper song recommendation, I guess. XD

If I think of/run across any more, I'll be sure to let you know! (Off the top of my head, maybe Turn Back the Clock by Steam Powered Giraffe, if you want a heartbreaking song from the perspective of Youko? an immortal/long-lived entity who is learning about the concept of humans having short life spans? Oh fuck I just hurt MY heart thinking about it as Yukina meeting a human kid and watching them grow up and oh nooooo I mean she understands the concepts of offspring and death unlike the robot singing it but OH NOOO Or maybe Kiss From a Rose by Seal, for a mellow Hiei POV-ish song? Oops now I'm just glancing through all the music I have in case anything else catches my eye OH OH and Horror of Our Love by Ludo, as...I think mostly Kurama's POV, though some verses might fit Hiei's POV better? Obligatory Oingo Boingo recommendation since Kuwabara has their poster on his wall: everything maybe No Spill Blood for Youko, or No One Lives Forever and Dead Man's Party specifically for Yusuke but also kinda just in general? Oooh and I Will Never Die by Delta Rae for Kurama. Okay yeah that's everything that stuck out at a glance in my music folder. XD)

yu yu hakusho is a huuuge hyperfixation of mine, but my adhd has been making me struggle with focusing on doing the creative stuff i wanna do (like drawing and writing), so ive been instead doing a shit ton of other things revolving around yyh- like collecting the music and making the yu yu jukebox channel, ripping frames to post and organize them on my sideblog @reikai-records , and ive also been working on making a dialogue transcript for the dub (still unsure where to put it online when im done with that tho, atm i just have it on google docs, not too far on it)!

i cant remember if ive encountered translations for the skits of the dance mix cd though, id def love to see that!

Things Sax does extremely well: fainting and bleeding (separately), fainting and bleeding (combination), rotting in bed, crying or being completely stoic (no in between), causing more problems while trying to fix his previous problems, omitting certain truths (aka lying).

Now, I don't know if he really counts as an SWMM because he's not a classic villain... but in his pursuit of Doing The Right Thing he has made some awful choices. Good intentions, poor outcomes.

In an attempt to save his sister, he left his post and facilitated the escape of a world-devouring entity which he was supposed to help contain.

After his sister died he made another attempt to save her, via necromancy, and instead doomed her to an endless cycle of death and rebirth. Until recently, none of her reincarnations were healthy enough to survive infancy.

He befriended the parents of this latest incarnation without filling them in on the backstory, or his motives. After they were killed by his enemy, he took the baby and kept her hidden for 11 years (did she have grandparents, uncles, aunts? Yes, probably. He claims they couldn't have cared for her like he did and technicallyyyy he's right, since her survival required magic, but...)

He broke the arm of one of his 'adopted' adult kids (he has an enchanted cottage which has been a refuge for a lot of people) when said adult tried to prevent him from killing someone else. Yes, technically he did only push Thom and didn't intend for Thom to hit the wall so hard, but...

Long story short but his home world didn't end, it was just knocked out of its timeline for a while. Unfortunately, due to his actions on the day the Grim escaped (attacking portal guards and forcing his way through the rift, just as an unrelated-to-him group stormed the castle), he was a) assumed dead and b) immediately arrested on his return for treason and attempted regicide.

He's a constant menace and cause of stress to his man, the kindest and sweetest soul to ever live. He doesn't mean to be, it's just that his attempts to keep Fen safe often seem to involve risking himself in increasingly creative and fatal ways.

Why should you vote for Sax? Well, I think his endless complex trauma and the fact that almost all his misfortunes happened because he was trying to fix things/help people makes him pretty damn tragic and definitely very damp. He could do with a win. Plus... look at him. 🥲

Nancy Landgraab

What makes Nancy a Sad, Wet Meow Meow? Our famously known townie turned OC is the Queen of Melancholy. She's closeted, she's religiously repressed, she's h*rny, she's rich, she carries the burden of her deceased elder brother, she's the bane of her mother's existence. When she's not internalizing her self loathing, she's gazing longingly into the distance thinking about a life free of her mother's judgement and status that she never wanted in favor of running free through a sunflower field kissing beautiful women. And when she manages to actually show up for her two sons, she's still so emotionally detached that this will very much come up in a therapy session later. Her husband is almost on his knees begging for her to smile but she's still pining after her first love while being married to said husband (who's a second runner up for SWMM tbh).

She's a cheater, she's a liar, she's about to get into some risky, sketchy business, she disappoints her children, she's morally grey, she's a top, she's catholic, she's a cougar, she likes to splurge on dr*gs and strippers, the list goes on. ahhh.

Tonight is race night!

This is a project for the entire community of Starlight Express role play blogs of Tumblr! Every character is welcome to participates, including doubles, any production, and OCs!

Here is how this will work:

Please read carefully before joining the community!

A community will be made for this tournament, joining is necessary to sign up.

Pairing is necessary- specially between an engine character and a carriage character (a carriage can be freight, coach, component, etc.)

When you join the community, there will be a post in which you submit your pairing- one engine and one coach stating the character’s names, their @‘s, which production they are from or whether they are an oc, as well as if they are an engine or a coach.

In this community, there will be a post meant for finding a racing partner- but it is very much encouraged to roleplay these interactions out outside of the community beforehand! Please ensure that both parties are agreeing to partner up before one of them submits a pairing.

Depending on how many sign up, the first round of races will consist of groups of 3 or 4 pairs. There will be one winner of each race, and those winners will be split into groups of 3 or 4 pairs for the next round of races. So on and so forth, until a winner is declared.

A community post will be made offering different dates for each race in the first round, which pairs can determine which would work best for their schedules and sign up for the best date. It is not necessary to be attentive all day during the race, as long as you respond at least every 3 hours. If you fail to respond to a turn notification within an hour, your turn will be skipped. When the groups for each race in the first round of races are declared, the participants will be @‘d in a post on the Control account both inside and outside of the community.

When a race begins, all participants will be @‘d in a post in the community and a separate post on the Control account. Do not reblog with an action until what the action is, who does it, and the order is sorted out inside the community. Under the post inside the community, details including whose turn is first will be added to the post under which actions will be sorted. The engine of the first pairing will describe what it is they want to do in a reply under that post- ex. “Greaseball pushes Golden Eagle aside to get in front of him.” Control will roll a dice to determine if the action succeeds, fails, or if nothing happens. This will be determined with the roll of a 20-sided die. 1-7 means a fail, meaning the action somehow backfires and sets the racer back a place. Ex: In response, Control would reply with the action, “Fail! Greaseball trips while trying to push Golden Eagle.” 8-12 means nothing happens. Control would reply with, “Nothing happens! Greaseball misses.” In this case, the racer would maintain their previous order. 13-20 means a success, in which Control would reply with, “Success! Greaseball pushes Golden Eagle to the ground.” A successful action against another participant can knock a competitor down a place, but would not push the racer taking the action up a place. If the action is not taken against another racer (ex: “Greaseball takes a shortcut”) can boost the racer up a place if successful. Offensive actions can only be taken against other racers either directly in front of or behind the train taking the action (during the first round of turns, this doesn’t apply). Yes you can start fights! A fight will lower the places of both parties, but the loser (determined by a coin flip) will be knocked out of the race.

The carriages take an action too, and can either support their engine (ex: Dinah knocks into Golden Eagle) or to sabotage their engine (ex: Dinah brakes to slow Greaseball down). These work the same as engine turns, but are taken after the other partner.

Be creative with your actions! Inspiration points can be awarded if your action is particularly interesting, giving the racer advantage on the next turn (an extra dice roll). Yes, powers or skills specific to a character can be utilized. If you are unsure about whether you can take an action, don’t be afraid to ask.

When the outcome of an action is determined in the community post, the racer playing the action will move to reblog the race announcement post on the Control account describing what happened. The train taking the first action will reblog the original post, then their carriage will reblog from the first engine’s action when their own action is determined, the next engine will repost from the last carriage’s repost, so on and so forth.

There will be a total of 4 rounds of turns from each pair, and the final placement will determine the winner of that race. The winner of each race in the first round of races will move on to the next round.

Chapter ? — Snowblown

Embers flew from the fire, hissed in the snow, and Marin huddled further into her coat.

She’d known the weather was getting colder for a while now. The further west they went, the less the sun seemed to shine, and the more the wind seemed to blow. Yes, it was perfectly reasonable, and it wasn’t unexpected; even more so when considering the gradually dropping temperatures in and around the area… but the reality of it all hadn’t hit her until the day she woke up in Pike National Forest with half her tent covered in snow.

Zaida, somehow, had managed to sleep through it all. Maybe it was her luck, maybe it was her sheer sleeping prowess — either way, her own tent had remained comfortably occupied until mid-morning, when the bleak sun and Marin’s fire had warmed the camp enough, and the snow on the top had long since turned to water.

The habit hadn’t stopped. It was becoming somewhat of a ritual.

But the further out they went, the less the snow melted, and the more time Marin had to spend in the cold.

And Zaida wasn’t the only one with a questionable sleeping schedule. Caelan, too, seemed determined to make Marin’s mornings as tiring as possible. He was up with the sun’s first rays, searching for monsters, following clouds as if they meant something. It made Marin almost happy Zaida was still asleep. If only because she and Caelan would freeze to death chasing squirrels otherwise.

It was on one of these mornings, with the fire still too weak to warm anything and the snow still spiralling down, that Caelan came to her with news of something other than floating water droplets — not that it was any more substantial.

“...You want us to follow a ghost story.”

“I see it more as... ‘investigating an opportunity’.”

“An opportunity you got from a few superstitious storytellers wasting their lives?”

“It’s better than- I mean, I thought you’d think it would be better than investigating the intriguing prophetic nature of clouds.”

It was. She’d give him that. “Congratulations, Caelan. On finding something better than clouds to chase.”

Caelan, looking over, gave her a dramatically scorned look.

“...Fine,” she sighed, walking over. “What’s the story?”

His eyes lit up in a way they only could when faced with some sort of thrill. “Basically,” he said, “basically. You know how people hike through here, right? And how it snows?”

“Of course I know how it snows, I’m standing in it.”

“Yeah, well, you don’t. Stop ruining the atmosphere. Anyway, so it’s really creepy, because the snow,” he paused, for dramatic effect, “is almost alive.”

Marin stared at him. “What.”

“Hey, I’m just repeating what I heard. Can’t say if I believe it, but weird stuff happens, right? And apparently, there are snowstorms around here which are really weird. Nobody can predict them, the weather forecasts are completely useless, they just turn up out of nowhere. And they’re not proper snowstorms, either, they’re really, really small — but the weirdest part is that they seem to actually chase people. I don’t think anyone actually died, but loads and loads of people who hike through here just get caught in one of them and lose all their stuff.” He looked right into her eyes. “And they never happen any other time.”

“...Apparently,” she replied. “We don’t know that.” But as unlikely as it seemed, the story represented a chance to have an actual goal in mind; to have a purpose which encompassed more than wandering aimlessly. It intrigued her more than she’d have liked to admit. “Do you know when all this started?”

“Oh yeah, about two and a half years ago.”

Not forever, then. That definitely made it more plausible than it had been, but there was still…

Wait.

“Two and a half years ago?”

“Well, yeah, that is what I just said.”

The wind whipped around them, and the fire sputtered. There was a chill in the air that only served to emphasise her point. “The same time Pikes Peak started to get really, really cold?”

“Yeah, it would be…” Caelan’s eyes glinted, and he stopped himself before continuing. “Yeah, of course. Yeah, I knew that. See? I told you I was onto something.”

Marin’s lips twitched upwards as she headed over to their supplies, picking out a pair of tongs. “Stop it.”

“...I think I’ll pass.”

She rolled her eyes with tired affection, and walked up to the fire. Embers sparked as she nudged some blocks of wood, preventing the gust from reaching the heart of the flame.

“Alright. Let’s assume, just for now, we’re up to chasing this idea. Who did you hear it from?”

Caelan smiled mischievously. “Well, there was this drunk old lady in this tavern… oi, Marin, relax”, he called out, seeing Marin’s hand on the tongs freeze. “It wasn’t a drunk old lady at a tavern – contrary to popular belief, I do actually possess some sense of reason. No, basically there was this couple who lost their stuff…”

Marin sat at the edge of her tent, brows furrowed “...And this has happened how often?”

“She didn’t say, but from the way she was talking, that’s the case much more often than not. She even tells people to bring two copies of everything they’re taking outside now, in case one of the pairs of stuff goes missing. Not that it usually works,” Caelan answered, now poking the fire, “but it’s common enough for that to be an actual safety measure.”

“And every single time people’s things went missing after a snowstorm?”

“Yup.”

“...Has anything been found?”

“If it has, it sure isn’t very often. There are notices for lost belongings all over the place.”

Wait. “Notices for lost belongings? So we can-”

They were interrupted by a yawn coming from a tent nearby. Looking over, Marin saw the edges stretch as something pushed against them, and a few moments later, a face poked out of the entrance.

“…guys… why are you… talking so loud, it’s only…” Zaida pushed the hair out of her eyes and looked up at the sky, blinking tiredly. Falling snowflakes rested on her cheeks, giving her new freckles. “…seven thirty or something...”

Marin glanced at her watch. “Nine, actually.” Despite her attempt at being unimpressed, she couldn’t help a small smile.

“That’s the same thing, it’s still… sleeping hours… can I just-”

“Now Zaida, Zaida, Zaida,” Caelan said, walking over. “Would you really want to sleep on this fine morning, where we have not two, not three, but… well – one – lead?”

She jolted up at that, looking at Marin. “We have a lead?”

“…Caelan’s found a story. Which still seems a bit suspicious, but…” she sunk down into a crouch “...it’s better than nothing. Essentially…”
