on that note, i have an oc blog that i've only updated a few times a year since i made it, maybe i'll commit to it more and refine a lot of the stuff i made...

I’ve seen rolechat recommended a lot— I have never used it myself but thats awesome!

Some users have mentioned just flat out using tumblr. I never did that myself but I have a friend who used to. Not a terrible idea!

Does msparp exist? I know they moved away from strictly homestuck, and into broader fandom roleplays!!

Discord is a great idea!!! I’m sure there are servers strictly for roleplayers, and there’s no problem with making more. Could be a good place to meet and greet folks, or to have group RPs! And making a new discord could be a great way to meet friends!

YES, this is a loss, but this is also a chance to gain new friends!! So lets not despair, and let us instead take this time to regroup and gather new solutions

Not ask-blog related, then, but how would you get into role-playing?

honestly, just find an RP space/community (that's accepting new members) and hop right in. If you're nervous about your writing not being up to snuff, RP spaces are in my opinion the way to build up your writing. We all start somewhere and RP spaces are a great place to start and often full of beginners. You will pick it up and improve very quickly, have no fear. The general rules to be aware of in any RP space is basically just be nice and don't powerplay (which means don't do stuff like start controlling other people's characters, or deciding things for other people's characters without their permission, don't make everything in the RP about only your character, etc etc. Generally just treat everybody else and their characters with general courtesy). Also if everybody else in a space is doing only script or only paragraph format rp, try to match that. And try to make sure your writing is legible as a general courtesy cause otherwise people will have a hard time joining you in RP even if they want to - so avoid letter replacement/typing quirks (unless it's specific to the RP - see: Homestuck, though even with HS rp there is sometimes a site toggle to turn typing quirks off or similar) and do a quick scan to make sure your posts aren't super full of typos or etc.

The finding the space is really the hardest part - RP-designated spaces are becoming more difficult to find since forum boards have started disappearing (though they have also started making a resurgence!). My old forum stomping grounds have since become an adoptables pet game site - though I do know a lot of online pet game sites have very active forum communities that usually had plenty of rp. I know for a fact Flight Rising has an active RP community. Rarely you can also find some other forms of RP-designated sites, like MSPARP used to be the big one for Homestuck and had some pan-fandom offshoots, but I don't know exactly what the status is for that stuff over there. I believe MSPARP doesn't exist anymore and I don't know anything about the rest of all that.

I used to also play some RP-dedicated multiplayer games and those can be a great option, depending on the game and your personal tastes. The main one I used to play a.) i would not recommend to people lol and b.) i'm pretty sure is very dead anyways so I don't have any exact recommendations there. I hear Roblox is a good place to find RP servers in a similar vein to that type of stuff but I never got into Roblox so I cannot confirm/deny that. You can sometimes find public Minecraft servers that have rp spaces but those are harder to find nowadays. There's a ton of discord RP communities you can join though. It's a bit more difficult to search around and get a feel for them just with how discord is but there's definitely plenty of 'em.

And I am not very in the tumblr RP community spheres (or other social media rp spheres - though i have dabbled) but to my understanding with those you either find an active group and ask if they're open to new members/if you can join, or you just jump right in to making your own blog/account/etc for it. Make some prompts/rp starters for people to potentially hop in and join you with or otherwise just kind of find you and rope you into their rp group or whatever. And of course you can always start a group with your friends.

The major things with RP is just kind of figuring what type of RP you want to be doing cause that informs everything else. Do you want to do script rp (usually formatted along the lines of [CHARACTER]: *runs around*) or paragraph/prose rp (the "[Character] ran around in circles before coming to a halt before the door." type format)? Do you want to do more of a video-game type rp where you have an avatar? Do you want to do something more like a TTRPG/D&D? Do you wanna do just straight up LARP (i can't really help you with that one much that one. you'd just have to search for local LARP groups - sometimes you can find them at your local conventions)? All those things are going to point you in different directions for what you want to do. In general, if you can find RP forums you can usually find both script and paragraph rp though paragraph rp is more common. Chatrooms and video games are more likely to lean script rp format due to chat limitations though this is not always the case. Social media rp is kind of it's whole own beast and everybody does it differently or different groups do it differently but if you want to do RP stuff primarily on your own and maybe pick up a group as you go then in-character social media can be a fun route for that. Or if you're not particularly looking for collaborative RP but want to do some interactive story stuff in a similar vein, then making an askblog might be more your style.

In general right now though, looking for RP discords is a relatively easy one or you can start your own and advertise it. Tbh if you find Warrior Cat RPers they may very likely have a designated area for non-WC rp (in the past Warriors RP sites/groups/etc ive been a part of, this has been the case in all of them). Also Warriors RP is like, everywhere. You will find it. It's like a constant of the universe or something. Actually doing a quick search i found some newer WCRPG forums and they look beautiful and yes, they do have non-Warriors rp sections. Idk much about RP communities in other fandoms but you can always count on Warriors. And as mentioned before, social media RP is an easy one.

Hopefully something in all of that helps a lil bit.

MXRP RE-BUILD BETA IS LIVE

THE BACKER-EXCLUSIVE BETA IS GOING LIVE! PHASE 1: GROUP CHATS

The ever-powerful Hex has finished up all we need to launch the initial beta of the MXRP 2023 REBUILD in all its (unfinished) glory. As stated before, though; this phase of the beta will be primarily focusing on group chats in order to test chat functionality, stress test network connection, and gauge reception to the new stuff we have cooking. It will also be exclusive to those who backed the original Kickstarter, the previous Patreon, and the CURRENT patreon prior to this post going live. Once I hit post on this, I'll be shooting all of you your beta codes. Slowly. (Because there's a lot of you and I have to do it one by one).

THINGS TO NOTE:

As the site is still in dev, pretty much everything you see is subject to change. The visuals aren't final (we've actually discussed something internally that we're not ready to speak on yet in regard to this, but I'll announce if we end up doing it), the settings menu is a little sparse, etc. In one weeks' time, I'll be posting a survey to collect feedback for me and Hex to shovel into our slavering maws and guide our hands going forward.

As this is a functionality beta, several features are currently a little fuckity wuckity (don't work). These include:

Quirking

Chat User editing (IE, acronym, name, color, etc). Site admins can change someone's defaults if they really, absolutely need it. It's a top priority to get patched in after the beta starts though.

Kicking (Kind of redundant, and the logic is weird. Hex is getting to it later)

Bbcode does not reflect live in the editor, but it does render in messages.

Certain parts of the new in-chatbar formatter don't work right (Blockquotes, etc)

The beta will also be updating periodically, as Hex will be patching features in as we go along.

Let's talk a little about minors being groomed in online roleplaying spaces.

The number of children who have knowingly or unknowingly received sexual roleplay messages from adults is disturbing, and I have listened to a lot of people's stories of being groomed during interviews. The bottom line: adult fandom roleplayers often don't take accountability for checking the age of their partners before sending NSFW content.

While an ((18+)) in brackets OOC might make the adult feel better when sending an NSFW starter, kids frequently respond anyway and we know they do. If your response to that is to blame the child and continue sending NSFW starters in roleplay settings full of minors... I urge you to consider that sexting a child is not a reasonable punishment for lying. Their lies are not an excuse when you know you're in a setting where they're present and frequently lie about their age. Why would you take the risk?

Here are just a tiny fraction of the experiences I read through at length:

"I tried to write smut with adults when I was fourteen to fifteen. I initiated it, but they should have known better than to say yes. When I was fifteen, sixteen, and seventeen, I was part of a roleplay group which also had an inordinate focus on smut, and was often railroaded into these scenarios; I didn't speak up about my comfort level and instead ghosted all parties involved when school became difficult."

"There was one adult who lied about her age and got me to date her and engage with her in sexual roleplays briefly, before her lie was revealed. It didn’t last long, but it really shook me up at the time."

"i don't really consider myself having actually roleplayed NSFW or having actually been groomed by someone, but it's complicated, too - i was put in a lot of situations where i was being pressured to roleplay sex with adults and just chickened out at the last minute. other minors in the group did actually roleplay these topics with adults, some on a regular basis. sex, in fandom and especially in the homestuck fandom at its height, wasn't a topic that was obscured from minors at all - i'm not even sure it occurred to a lot of people that it was something they should hide from non-adults, so it was openly discussed in places we could see it, even discussed with us."

"When I was 13-14 I met my 18 year old girlfriend by rping Homestuck. I was groomed in the Homestuck fandom to find this normal and rp was a large part of it. We rped violent NSFW before dating. I regularly engaged in NSFW rp with anonymous people on MSPARP as well."

Not all of the instances people spoke about, which caused them harm, were instances where adults had intentionally roleplayed with a minor. Adults in fandom have a responsibility to do their due diligence.

I've seen a lot of people talking about how they're worried that online roleplay is dying. If the aging population in certain roleplay circles is a concern you have then the best way to tackle it is to make more roleplay environments safe for kids and to make others adult-only.

My current project, OOC: Exploring Online Fandom Roleplay, delves into the experiences of minors in online roleplaying spaces and the lasting impact that grooming can have. While the book mainly covers why people roleplay and the positive and wonderful things about fandom roleplaying, it would be wrong to shy away from discussing children's online safety!

YEAH theres been... uh... many many more closed cliquey areas in the hsrpc. which even i was just locked out of but i kinda saw them and didnt rlly try to ... get in there? it was entirely up to others if they wanted to be welcoming or have a wide interaction net and i didnt rlly take it very hard if g2 wasnt in that circle! at the end of the day im just here to write my goofy wreck of a nerd. that sense of not taking initiative is a double edged sword but when anyone DOES approach me/g2 i gladly interact back. im very thankful about it in fact.

On the person calling everyone pedophiles, I see them entertain asks that like, suggest having Underage means grooming is easier and as a victim I kinda lost my shit because my grooming happened from people who were morally against underage, noncon and incest. Like, straight up the fictional morals didn’t match their actions, I was groomed through the ro community on a few different occasions.

And basically I’m tired of the rhetoric that like, it’s safer if you ban that topic because you get rid of the grooming tool. Which no, you don’t. The roleplaying is the grooming tool and there’s no wat to get rid of it to protect it. I want, so desperately, for people to stop pretending that like, there isn’t a cognitive dissonance with people who hurt kids, and that these people don’t openly say they hate and want to kill pedophiles as well.

It’s tiring and frustrating and just enables grooming and as someone who never takes part in these discussions, I hate that I am always triggered under the guise of protecting survivors and kids.

It makes me feel like they don’t care about grooming survivors UNLESS they got groomed by underage, which, hate to break it to everyone who was groomed by it, it’s actually very rare for sexual content or porn to be used unless the minor was already engaging and positive to that, because it’s too risky.

Grooming is about building trust and rapport, Roleplaying is so easy to do, and to gain an emotional investment in the characters.

And considering at no point did I rp a minor with an adult (unless you count a sfw parent and child RP between me and my groomer, after we had characters that were adults in a relationship beforehand), and I still ended up being groomed, I think these people are stupid and I’m sick and tired of being triggered because people are acting like my groomers and their enablers 24/7 when talking about an ADULT ONLY RP SITE!!!

I don’t even really use MXRP except to write with my partner nowadays, but like, I can guarantee I have seen more open pedophiles in sfw, anti-pedophilia chat groups than I have nsfw/18+, underage allowed chat groups.

Because one typically has a higher rate of minors than the other one. And typically these people get into positions of power and make friends with people in charge and then get away with it. They’re usually beloved by communities or friends with people who are.

Openly being into lolisho and underage content typically makes that very hard and harder still to get into consistent contact with minors, especially to build up trust and rapport.

i mean yeah what's gonna have more groomers, the "18+ no kids allowed and if you're even 51% suspected of being a kid you get banned" group or the "this is a safe place for kids to be uwu" group??? no fucking brainer lmao

i would be much more concerned about children being around adults who bill themselves as Safe For Kids Trust Me than ones who are like "begone minor" like, uh, every single platform (sans older iterations of msparp) ive ever seen that has underage content on it lmfao

people act like parp inherently had groomers bc it allowed underage when it was really bc its old management (and that of adjacent sites e.g. charat) were just... straight up groomers who allowed and encouraged minors writing nsfw on the site

Back when I was under age and on old msparp I regrettably rped under age characters because I was...under age. I LITERALLY ADMITTED MY AGE IN A GROUP CHAT THAT WAS FOR ADULT/CHILD (FiCtIoNaL) RP, then I was groomed. Was it stupid? Yeah. Was I under the impression I was doing this to cope when it was actually a form of self harm, because adults in the same space were telling me that? Absolutely.

I noticed a lot of folks don’t use Discord to keep up with MxRP trouble and usually come here for answers. Instead of shouting into the void, I made this blog so they can always come here to shoot an ask to find who they were roleplaying with! Any roleplayers from any site are also welcome to see if they can re-match with their partner through this blog as well! Oh Dami u already KNOW it’s Rin. I’ve had Rin since I was in middle school so like. [counts on my fingers] 2013/2014 Academic Year? 17/18 was Freshman Year of High School.

Rin has changed a lot! But he is my baby, and he is still somewhat of a self insert! However now, he’s just my most projected on OC and shares a lot of tiny little things with me. Son. Blorbo. Apple of my eye. My most prominent muse with a million AUs.

Rin started out as a silverblooded female troll, around 6/7 sweeps- about the age we meet the trolls in canon, who was kicking it with ‘her’ family line with a wandering group of limebloods. Eventually get kicked out from that group for some reason or another. Then Rin shifts to his more self-insert stage where ‘she’ was.. a limeblooded seadweller, but posed as a violet because uhhh Eridan. It was between Eridan, Sollux, and Karkat whenever it was self-ship time. Crazy times. After that, ‘she’ was just a very secluded limeblooded seadweller, whose lusus was a sea turtle! Kyrian came a little more into being here in the fact that Rin had journals from her, and SeaturtleMom vehemently enforced no quadrants because of what happened to Kyrian.

Around 2016 I change Rin up, and ‘she’ is just a limeblood, roughing it and trying to survive. ‘She’ was just as rowdy and stubborn once that cautiousness faded, and ‘she’ always wore a vest over a black button up and khaki shorts or pants with some boots. Soon after Rin becomes a he finally, as I had realized I was trans, so he had to match :). I met videndumsprint/Pox as my first person in the FTC, and I started a plot with their lime Zanrie! Rin’s lusus flipped from being a crow/raven to eventually became the CroboaMom we love today.

Between Zanrie and some other things, Rin also had various plots and whatnot with some friends before I got on tumblr for real. Will forever remember those ships- good times, although very ‘crack’-y or angsty.

Now, Rin has grown a lot and has a huge support network that I could never have imagined him having.

OOH i also remembered msparp lol. Rin started there, too, after middle school. Pre-tumblr was msparp days <3

have you ever come across that group of people on db/mxrp/msparp? like youll connect to a john or something and then their group of friends will join and harrass you/say all kinds of slurs. it was worse on ms/xparp because the old owners were incompetent and never bothered looking at reports, i think on db they got banned off the site pretty fast

i haven't actually ever had that happen. i would actually really like the details for this if you care to share them, because i completely believe you. people on this webbed site can be unhinged. especially during the lawless thelle period.
