Gropiusstadt I, Berlin 2024

For the most part of his career Walter Gropius relied on the supporting hands of trusted partners: being more of a creative communicator than a gifted draftsman, Gropius needed sparring partners to visualize his ideas. In Adolf Meyer, Maxwell Fry, Marcel Breuer and later the partners in The Architects Collaborative Gropius found just that and thus it’s no wonder that in his introductory essay to the present volume he addresses the issue of teamwork: “The Architects Collaborative 1945-1965”, published in 1966 by Niggli, a beautifully and comprehensively illustrated retrospective of 20 years of TAC. The volume documents the considerable output of the firm as well as the great variety of projects TAC completed in just two decades, among them office buildings like the PAN-AM tower in New York, the Gropiusstadt in Berlin, churches, embassies, hospitals, libraries, hotels etc. etc. An obvious focal point of TAC was the design of schools and universities that in many examples from all over the world appear in the book and represent a bridge between Gropius’ magnum opus in Dessau and his postwar work.

A beautiful, neatly designed classic and a long overdue addition to my library.

So I randomly decided to check out the show on Amazon Prime again to see if any bonus material (I'm still craving those deleted scenes) was added and I found out that there is this whole trivia section with little fun facts or just interesting side notes written by someone who worked on the show. These were some of my favourites:

At Christiane's home the broken kitchen light flickered when "Zoologischer Garten" was first mentioned, foreshadowing the harrowing future meaning of this place.

It was Dijan who cut Axel's hair. I can't, help, whyyyy.

Axel was really stalked by the Stasi. It wasn't in his head. Wtf.

Christiane waited for Benno at the station for 8 fucking hours.

The other old lady living with Babsi and the grandma was the grandma's sister and she doesn't talk because the grandma is so extravagant and powerful and just a bitch.

The necklaces of Christiane and Benno are supposed to reference Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, somehow.

The last scene zoomes out from the heroin the same way it did when heroin first came up in the show with Axel injecting it.

When Michi can't open the bottle it's because he grew up, lost his child-like marveling and lost faith in himself :(

When Benno and Christiane meet in Gropiusstadt (where Axel sees them) she was supposed to be on her way back from school, but the production team forgot to give her a backpack in the scene.

There were also lots of facts about production background and costume choices. Very interesting.

Gropiusstadt is such a terrible part of Berlin. Not only is it filled with Muslims, it's also a high rise ghetto built right into a field. Like no shit, you have Grossziethen, a small village with an economy wholly centered around equestrian sports and then you have the towering ghetto blocks of Lichtenrade and Gropiusstadt surrounding it. We should've never torn down that wall.

Like fuck that. I want my Berlin Wall and the Inner-German border back!!

Berlin Neuköln. Gropiusstadt. Sommer 2003. 4 Teenager zwischen Drogen, Gangs, Kriminalität, Drogenmissbrauch, Gewalt, Hip Hop, Rap, Schule, häuslicher Gewalt sowie Freundschaft und Liebe. Nach gefühlt unendlichen Jahren endlich mal wieder ein deutscher und ernster Film der nicht klischeehaft übertrieben oder abgrundtief dämlich komödiantisch ist, sondern der Gesellschaft den Spiegel vor's Gesicht hält und mit seinen knapp 120 Minuten auf ganzer Linie überzeugen kann.

Meine Bewertung: 8,5 von 10
