The Culture
Since entering into the world of Electronic Dance Music when I was 15 years old my life has not been the same. I have been on so many adventures, I have met so many people, and I have had so much fun. I think sometimes people looking in from the outside believe that the EDM scene is just a bunch of people doing drugs and listening to people push buttons on stage. The reality is so much different than that. The EDM community is filled with people who love and cherish the world and one another. Some of my favorite DJ’s strive to spread messages of love and community every single day and they do so much more than just push buttons.
One of those DJ’s who is constantly working to create a positive message and world is Grant Griz aka Griz. Griz has a huge following of fans who work with him to spread his positive message, SLSL, Show Love, Spread Love. This message is something that I strive to live by and so do all his fans. Every year Griz hosts the 12 days of Grizmas where he supports local charities throughout Detroit. He raises tens of thousands of dollars every year to give back to Detroit, specifically the children. Being part of a community and culture that prides themselves on giving back and spreading love is one of the main reasons I am so in love with the electronic music world. I am part of Griz Family Facebook page and I know that if I ever needed just an ounce of support I could reach out to anyone on that page and the support would be abundant. Everyone in the Griz Family supports one another and the motto Show Love, Spread Love.
Another DJ with a message is Lorin Ashton aka Bassnectar. Bass Center was his most recent event, happening September 1-3 in Hampton, Virginia. Bassnectar produced this show with a very political message in the forefront. And his message was to never give into hatred, bigotry, or negativity. The visuals for the concert were very heavy. With images of swastikas being crossed out, images of KKK being crossed out, and images of Donald Trump being crossed out. I was not at the concert, but I saw videos on many friends social media pages. This powerful and important message that Bassnectar is sharing is crucial during this time. I think seeing Bassnectar speak up so passionately it really amazing and it sends a message to others to speak up as well.  Also, to get the sense that you are surrounded by people who feel so passionately about the same things you do and to know you are not alone in this fight is powerful. The sense of community is undeniable and also the sense of hope is undeniable too. Bassnectar took to twitter today saying, “It's time to fire this racist clueless liar @realDonaldTrump 🚫 If you don't reject his hate, you support it. #IMPEACH #RESIST”. Bassnectar is sharing what I believe to be an important message and one I can stand behind, and one that all of his thousands of other fans can stand behind.
I am writing about these two DJ’s because they truly encompass what the culture of the electronic dance world is. It is not as much about the music as it is about feeling a sense of belonging. I never feel more at home than I do when I am at an electronic music festival or show. To know that you are surrounded by people who believe in the same things you do and love that same things that you do is extremely cool. The community promotes a positive life-style and that is really all I have ever wanted. Surrounding yourself with good people who uplift you and support you is the most important thing in life. I have created lifelong friends within the electronic dance community and I am infinitely blessed because of that. I am able to connect to my friends on a spiritual and emotional level because of the music and life-style that exists within the electronic music world.
What are some communities that you are part of that make you feel this way?
Do you think spreading a political message on a platform like a concert is a good thing? How could it be tricky or controversial?
These are a few questions that I was pondering while writing this blog. I know that I personally loved the message that Bassnectar was sending at his concert, but perhaps there were some people there who support Trump. The message is to stop hate, but being on such a public platform speaking against the President is controversial. This brings me to another aspect of the EDM community that I love; it is never boring. You could honestly never go to a concert and be bored. It would literally be impossible. I truly never feel more alive than I do at an EDM show and I have the community and artists to thank for that.
I will my blog post with this quote from Bassnectar himself, “You can’t fake what it feels like to be around 10,000 people, especially engulfed in music.” This quote is so accurate about my feelings toward the EDM world, it is impossible to put into words the feelz I get.

GRiZ Announces Fifth Annual 12 Days of GRiZMAS Charity Event Series
GRiZMAS is just around the corner and there’s no better way to celebrate than giving back. GRiZ knows this best, which is exactly why he has introduced his next series of events dedicated to supporting music education in Detroit’s public schools system.
Music saved his life, but Detroit built him. Growing up learning music within the progressive container of Detroit’s music scene shaped him, so as a continuation of his roots, he’s dedicated his last five holiday seasons to help kids in the city flourish as he did. The last five GRiZMAS seasons have proven to be a massive success — and this year has potential to be better than ever.
This year’s focus of the 12 Days of GRiZMAS builds on past efforts to continue raising funds to increase access to music education for Detroit’s youth. It is this “for Detroit, by Detroit” ethos that has given the holiday series a genuine reputation for bringing positivity and love to one of the city’s most deserving communities.
Local mic night, roller disco, volunteering efforts, caroling, a pop-up holiday shop and more will be established over 12 nights as GRiZ and his dedicated family take over the city. He caps it all off with a traditional Night Before GRiZMAS set or two, followed by a 2-night run at Detroit’s iconic Masonic Temple.
