Rhiannon Giddens Defends The Black Roots Of Country Music: ‘We Keep Having To Tell The Story’

“You brought me here to build your house; to build your house, to build your house” is the phrase that opens Rhiannon Giddens’ first children’s book, “Build a House,” as well as the song that inspired it. Co-written by Giddens and famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the song also features Giddens on banjo, an instrument she has long sought to reclaim as an inherently African instrument foundational to American music. As she explained during an episode of theGrio’s “Writing Black” podcast, the banjo’s story parallels the creation of African-American identity and our continued experience in the United States.

“I was just really frustrated with the continuing ignorance about where American history comes from and just how we keep having to tell the story,” said Giddens, a Pulitzer Prize and Grammy award-winner, MacArthur Genius, singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and author who has written in multiple genres. “So I wrote the song ‘Build a House’ because I was just sort of like “[white settlers] freakin’ brought us over here to build this whole freaking thing, and now you don’t want us to have a fair share of it. That doesn’t make any sense.”

In light of the recent controversy surrounding no less than Beyoncé now reclaiming a genre of music not only central to her native Houston but to her African-American heritage, the words of Giddens, a musical contributor on “Renaissance, Pt. 2,” hold new relevance.

“I mean, it’s kind of my life’s work; I can’t get away from it,” she explained. “And what I feel like I can’t leave is that idea of the cultural history of the United States. Just as so many buildings were built by enslaved people, not only the buildings but the bricks … people, when they see the edifice, they see the building, they don’t see that.” -(source: the grio)

Samaria Rice, the mother of Tamir Rice, is continuing to speak out against those she feels hustle off “Black death.” After losing her 12-year-old son in 2014 to a fatal police shooting in Cleveland, Rice has become an outspoken critic of the Black Lives Matter movement and social justice advocates she feels don’t do enough for the families left grieving the loss of their loved ones.

“ALL OF THE FAMILIES SHOULD BE GETTING THERAPY, AND ALL OF THEM SHOULD BE GETTING THE TOOLS TO SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, NOT HAVE PEOPLE SPEAK FOR THEM,” SHE TOLD THE CUT IN AN INTERVIEW PUBLISHED ON MONDAY.

Back in March, Samaria Rice spoke out after activist Tamika Mallory appeared at the Grammy Awards for rapper Lil Baby’s stage performance. She blasted public figures like Mallory and accused her and others of “benefitting off the blood” of police brutality victims, Cleveland.com reported. She reiterated this stance during her recent interview asking, “Where was you at?”

“They should not be standing on the front line like this was they child,” she said, as reported by The Grio. “You supposed to be uplifting the family, the community, teaching us how to love on each other, not bickering and fighting about who gon’ get the next case or who gon’ be on TV next. It’s a mess.”

She further criticized Tamika Mallory and brought up her referring to her social justice work as a “job.”

“I HEARD HER SAY THIS IS A JOB. WHO HIRED YOU? WHO SENT YOU? ARE YOU SHOWING UP AS AN ACTIVIST OR AN ENTERTAINER,” RICE SAID.

She also claimed to have never spoken to activist Shaun King despite his claims of raising money for the Rice family at their request. “I ain’t never talked to Shaun King a day in my life,” Rice declared in the interview, which ran on The Cut. “Shaun King raised all that money [for Tamir] and sent me a $60,000 check. I ain’t know Shaun King from a hole in the wall.”

As she fights to have her son’s case reopened and investigated after Donald Trump silently closed it during the final days of his presidency, Rice shared her hopes for leaders to show genuine support for those left broken by the system.

“I THINK THEY CAN MAKE THINGS RIGHT WITH THE COMMUNITY AND TRY TO SHOW THE COMMUNITY THAT THEY ARE WORKING AND NOT JUST TALKING…YOU GOT THESE CORPORATE PEOPLE LISTENING TO YOU LIKE YOU DOING THE WORK, AND YOU NOT DOING THE WORK IF YOU NOT IN THESE STREETS,” SHE SAID.

ODD NEWS: French village offers reward to anyone who can decode 'mystery' rock inscription

In the village of Plougastel-Daoulas, in northwest France, a rock has been discovered with a very strange inscription on it. So strange, in fact, that no one can figure out what it means and village officials are now offering a reward to anyone who decipher it. The inscription on the rock, which was first noticed a few years ago, is written mainly in capital letters but also features pictures including one of a sailing boat. There are two dates inscribed on the rock as well, 1786 and 1787. “There are people who tell us that it’s Basque and others who say it’s old Breton,” the mayor of Plougastel-Daoulas, Dominique Cap, told the Agence France-Presse. “But we still have not managed to decipher the text.” The reward for cracking the code is €2,000 (roughly $2,250) and anyone is welcome to try. A jury will then meet to choose the deciphered text which they find to be the most plausible, and the prize will be awarded to that decoder. The writing spans 20 lines and in one section reads, ““ROC AR B … DRE AR GRIO SE EVELOH AR VIRIONES BAOAVEL”. In another: “OBBIIE: BRISBVILAR … FROIK … AL”. “We’ve asked historians and archaeologists from around here, but no-one has been able to work out the story behind the rock,” Mayor Cap, told the BBC. “So we thought maybe out there in the world there are people who’ve got the kind of expert knowledge that we need. Rather than stay in ignorance, we said let’s launch a competition.” The competition is called “The Champollion Mystery at Plougastel-Daoulas” after Jean-François Champollion, the linguist who deciphered part of the Rosetta Stone. Anyone who wishes to try to decode the inscription can register at the mayor’s administration and will then be sent a photograph of the lines. The winning interpretation will be chosen in November.
