Blas Cantó - “Universo”

Am I an asshole for not giving Blas a proper chance? Ever since his announcement, my general sentiment was “oh. Another flop gay. K.” and never really looked back, in spite of TVE’s efforts to build up some sort of hype. 

Hype is definitely what Spain tried to build up for the weeks leading up to “Universo”’s reveal - TVE and Blas sprinkled little hints all across the social media, implying strongly they had found that *One Special Entry*. Perhaps, I was wrong, you know. Perhaps, they would surprise us. 

And then the reveal happened and nobody cared forevermore. Oh well. 

Song Analysis

I have a hard time pinpointing why exactly “Universo” is so off-putting for me and many others. I can see *fragments* of the solution but not the whole picture. 

Is it the self-important narcissism? The non-existent shallow wokeness? The incredibly cloying, ott and irritating “PERDONAMEs”? The “Shit Marte” vibe of it all? The desperate falsetto of them middle-eight? The fact that Blas tries to pull of “Token Hot Guy” by meticulously coiffing and brushing every part of his physique (he vibes as one of those fake-scruffy grindrgays who have a beard because beards are in, but shave the rest of their entire body with meticulous precision, and text you all “heyyyyyyy cutie can I [REDACTED] you [REDACTED]” at 2:34 am, for more on this particular archetype info see ‘Garvanliev, Vasil’) The fact that despite the resources and care that went into this song, it still feels vapid above any other adjective in the English language? All of the above? And that you could tell they would happen months in advance?

For me, the defining moment of this entry came when Blas INSISTED that his song had ~A Universal Meaning~ in every European language, only to yes, reveal that the song was *literally* called “Universo” anyway. It’s bad in the most lame and pointless way possible. I want to dislike it, but honestly, it even WORTH the honor of my shade. GTFO out my ranking plz.

“Universo” absolutely would’ve bombed in Rotterdam, so it is perhaps for the best that the cancellation happened? Wait, what the fuck am I saying NO MATTER HOW OFTEN EUROVISION IS CANCELLED, SPAIN WILL FOREVER MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES AD NAUSEAM, MISREAD ANY OPINIONS OUT OF THEIR IBERIAN BUBBLE AND MISPLACE THEIR BETTING EGGS INSIDE A FAILURE BASKET. 

Watch this tendency change in 2021 by... approximately 0%.

FREAKY! FRIDAY! FACTOR!

I mean, I have to give SOME props for Spain for at least TRYING to break their chain of failures by trying a more modern route, and especially if the method of choice is copying a non-winning JESC entry (😍), but the persistent #NotGettingIt of Eurovision or how their entries come across to anyyone who isn’t Spanish is so quintessentially “Spain In Eurovision” I can’t hand out more than one. Spain be Spain, I guess.

I know I’ve said this before but I can’t stand a grindrgay, and by that I mean someone’s who’s life revolves around grindr. To me there’s gays that have grindr and then there’s grindrgays. Like there’s nothing more annoying than speaking to one and all you get out of them is drama and stories coming from the app and it’s like... ok we get it gurl.. I have one too and get crazy messages as well, like what else can you talk about? Is that all you have to offer as entertaining conversation?
