The sun was dipping below the fog-covered horizon when, once more, the bobber of Grian's fishing rod plunged below the surface of the water. Excitement briefly flared in his chest before petering out; fishing for as long as he had made him realize how easy it was to recognize what type of thing he'd caught. So, just as he had done thousands of times before, he reeled in yet another fi—
Grian blinked.
Hanging on the end of the hook was an old leather boot.
He'd sworn that he'd caught a fish. After all, it wasn't like junk could swim to the top of the water and pull the bobber down, as much as he wished it could. Even a fishing rod of the greatest enchantments couldn't do such a thing.
"I'm really losing it now, huh?" Grian muttered to himself, exasperated.
He removed the singular boot and threw it behind himself into the heap of garbage that had piled up throughout the day. Only then did he decide to lean back on the dock, letting his eyes fall shut and his head tilt back to face the sky. Fishing as long and often as he did was exhausting, after all. Besides, the water was calm, the once unsettling amount of fog that he now found comforting in an odd way laid heavy around him, and the sky was darkening enough that the only things helping him see at this point were the handful of old lanterns around the dock.
And, just like he had noticed occasionally before, a soft tune began to drift through the air.
He'd stopped trying to find the source weeks ago (not that he'd done much searching, anyways), and now found it just as soothing as the fog itself. As nice of a tune as it was, changing here and there every time it was sung, it usually made odd thoughts pop up.
The first time he'd heard it, the first image in his mind was that of a woman with curly red hair that he couldn't quite recall the details of since he'd been too busy trying not to fall asleep while fishing. The tune must have gone on for half an hour, maybe longer, but he hadn't stuck around since his thoughts had strangely drifted to the lighthouse keeper, Gem, and the thought of her giving him a sultry look made him realize that it was time to go to bed after all.
The next time didn't happen until the week after. The tune was familiar, but some of the notes had definitely changed. Still, it was pleasant, even if this tune also made his mind wander off to an unusual place. This time, as the tune continued on minute after minute, he began to think of a rather muscular figure that was more broad than lean. Instead of ginger curls, he thought of rough brown hair pulled back and—
Ren? His neighbor?
And just like before, he deemed himself in dire need of sleep. Had he been particularly sleepy before? No, but clearly his brain had short-circuited. It was only as he stood up, packing up just as he had before, that the tune changed on the spot. With a few whistling notes added here and there, the image of Ren in his head morphed into that of yet another familiar figure—Cleo with their hand on their hip, whispering out his name and—
Maybe fishing this long was a bad idea after all.
So he scurried off with whatever fishing gear he had hastily pulled into his arms, and the tune died as he retreated.
For a week after those incidents, Grian had cautiously worked on trying to repair his sleep schedule. With each passing day, the bay was left silent, so he figured his efforts must have been working. That was, until the tune started up again, sounding just as cautious with its slow and almost shy melody.
Just hearing it alone nearly made him pack his things, but after a brief moment, he decided to settle in his spot. Rather than the downright horrifying images that his mind had conjured up before, this time he imagined himself in a rather large mansion. Everything was clean and pristine, and he knew that it was objectively a lovely place to live, but it was ultimately inconvenient. If he were rich enough to buy a mansion, then he'd have to walk so far and go up so many steps just to gather the supplies he needed for fishing. He could have a butler to get it for him, sure, but that would just be uncomfortable, wouldn't it? He much preferred the steady silence of the lake and depending on himself. The journey and preparation was half the fun. Besides, maybe his imagination was a tad lackluster, but even in his head, the entire backside of the mansion was left incomplete.
So, he continued to fish, even joining in on the tune with a quiet hum as he realized where it repeated, and that solidified just another routine of his.
It wasn't an everyday thing, but every so often, a similar tune as the last would join in with the wind, and he'd let his mind wander. Sometimes, he thought about a committee of people naming him the best fisherman in all the lands. Other times, he imagined himself winning the lottery. Strange thoughts, yes, but none too bothersome for him to stop fishing, and fish he did. Days turned into weeks, and eventually his heap of junk had to be organized into barrels which other people would occasionally "borrow" from, not that he minded. Still, the tune played, never the same but always consistent enough to be relaxing.
And now, here he was, leaning back after having caught yet another old boot when he heard a small splash of water. Grian jumped a little, his gaze snapping to where he heard the sound, and made eye contact with a pair of honey-brown eyes.
"Hello, hello!" said the... person.
"Uh... hello," Grian slowly replied.
The man(?) grinned at him, revealing every sharp tooth in his mouth, and then began to pull himself up onto the deck. Or, at least, that's what he tried to do. What actually happened was he managed to get his stomach onto the deck before slipping off to the point where Grian had to grab him under his arms and pull him up. It was only then, pulled into the lantern light, that Grian was able to point out shimmering orange-green scales littered across his cheeks, his shoulders, his forearms leading down to claws, and his waist which ended with a brilliant tail rather than a pair of legs.
"...Are you okay?" Grian slowly asked.
"Fine! I'm fine, yessiree, 100% doing amazing!" the decidedly-not-human person replied with a laugh.
Grian stared for a moment.
"Okay, then," he said, then he grabbed his fishing rod to return to what he was doing before.
The merman (assuming fish-person was ruse to say) simply stared at him as Grian began to fish yet again. Half a minute of silence passed before the merman spoke again.
"I'm Scar, by the way."
"Grian."
This time, what must've been a full minute passed.
"I'm a merman, if you didn't notice. Bet you haven't seen one of those before, huh?"
"Nope. Not once."
Scar stared at him. The webbed fins on the side of his flapped a little. He opened his mouth and shut it a few times. Yet another minute passed.
"What are you doing?"
"Fishing."
Silence again. Not even the frogs croaked nor did the crickets chirp. Scar's presence had probably scared away any fish, even if Grian was using an enchanted fishing rod—
"Why?"
"So I can catch a mending book, of course."
Ten seconds of silence.
"Why?"
"...because I want one?"
Scar tilted his head.
"Are you trying to sell it?" he eventually asked.
"Well, no. I guess I could if I catch enough."
"Do you need it for armor? To be, I don't know, the greatest warrior of all time?"
"Not really on my bucket list. I guess mending on some of my tools would be nice."
"So you want really good tools to impress someone?"
"No? Even if I did want that, I don't think anyone would be impressed by an especially glittery shovel."
"So then why do you want a mending book so bad?"
This time, it was Grian who paused. He could hear the water below the deck lapping at the wooden beams.
"I want it because... it would be cool and nice to have. Might be a good story to tell later on. Also mending on a fishing rod or a pickaxe would be much more convenient."
"Oh. Huh."
Scar finally averted his gaze from Grian and looked out across the lake. Well, as far as he could see, anyways, with the copious amounts of fog. For a moment, Grian thought he'd have peace until the sound of a stomach grumbling interrupted the night. This time, however, it wasn't his own. Scar looked further away in embarrassment, his tail flapping to lightly hit the wooden flooring of the deck as if that would cover up the sound. Grian peered over at him curiously for once, briefly distracted long enough to not see the bobber of his fishing rod dip below the surface of the water.
"If you're hungry, I have some fish stored away in those barrels over there. If fish is what you eat, anyways," Grian eventually spoke up.
Scar's head perked up, swiveling to look at Grian then to look at the aforementioned barrels.
"Really?" Scar asked with a hint of excitement.
"Uh, yeah, sure. I need to eat, too, but there's a lot of fish in there. Not like I can eat all of it."
Scar began to move as if to get up, only to realize that he wasn't going to be able to walk with a tail like his. Grian opened his mouth to offer to help, but Scar vigorously shook his head and insisted he could make it on his own. Five or so minutes of his wriggling passed before Grian wordlessly stood up and rolled one of the barrels conveniently within arm's reach of Scar. The merman pretended as if he'd gotten it there himself, and Grian didn't see a point in arguing.
So, that began an interesting night where Scar devoured three-fourths of the barrel of fish and told story after story. Each one seemed impossible or exaggerated, and Grian had no way of confirming what was said, but did it matter? It was entertaining all the same. Besides, not like he'd admit it out loud, but the company was pleasant even if Scar was definitely scaring away every other living thing in a ten-mile radius.
It wasn't until the moon was probably beginning to set that Grian was able to reel in something. It wasn't fish given Scar's volume, but he wasn't paying too much attention since Scar was in the middle of talking about something he'd seen and dubbed as a "swaggon" (it was most definitely a train, but Grian wasn't going to ruin that for him). He only tuned out Scar's story as he pulled in a shimmering book. His eyes went wide behind his glasses, his hands subtly trembling as he grabbed the book and saw the neatly-sewn word "Mending" on the cover.
"—and, hey, are you still listening?" Scar cut in, interrupting Grian's (lack of) thoughts.
Scar looked down at the book in his hands and quirked an eyebrow.
"What is it? Oooh, is that what you were looking for?"
Grian pursed his lips. The tune he'd heard before was very clearly Scar unless there happened to be some other sea creature lurking around commonly known for singing like that. Even if there was, Scar's voice alone was musical enough that he knew who had been singing in the first place. Grian thought of the nights he'd assumed he was alone only to be accompanied by the sweet lull of music. Scar hadn't sung a note tonight, but the night had been pleasantly filled regardless.
Grian looked away, then he let out a small sigh.
"Knockback again. This bay must have it out for me."
"You have the worst luck, you know that? How long did you say you've been here looking for one? Probably a millennia at this point!" Scar chimed in, sounding cheerful and exasperated all at once, and then he started on yet another story.
Grian glanced down at the book in his hands as Scar's chattering picked up.
It was definitely a mending book.
He looked up and to his side.
"—you wouldn't even know just how bad dolphins are since so many people think they're cute, but—"
Grian let out a small, quiet huff and tucked the book away under his bag.
My luck isn't as bad as I thought.

“you want a mending book, right?” scar asked, head peeking barely above the water, the gills on his neck still submerged in the water.
“if i were to want anything, it would be a mending book, yes.” grian cast his fishing rod back out into the water, his voice was careful and hesitant.
“what if i told you i had one?” scar swam closer to grian, still keeping his distance but grian could feel the water shift from the movement.
“you’re not a mermaid,” grian said, eyes closing into a squint at scar. “you’re a siren, aren’t you?”
“i’ve been called many things,” scar dodged the question. he brought his hand out of the water, brushing shapes into the surface with his fingers. “siren has been one of them.”
“you’re trying to lure me,” grian phrased it like a question, a rising intonation at the end. he reeled his fishing rod back in, another salmon.
“that depends,” scar smirked, his eyes followed the movement of grian unhooking the fish and throwing back into the sea. “is it working?”

Cod Grian Cosplay Build!
The fish man himself, season 10 Grian!
Reference Sketch
Tumblr media
Some notes:
I always end up changing somethings from the reference when making the actual outfit, although I stayed pretty close it it this time.
I initially drew him with a handlebar mustache and goatee to mimic the whiskers of a fish, however I switched to a fluffier mustache beard to match the guy from Frozen.
I also opted for my turtleneck shirt over the red sweater+collar to go for more of a fisherman vibe
Since Grian is usually drawn with parrot wings, I wanted to call back to that with red yellow and blue feathers on the bobbers.
The tail and fins
Tumblr media
I wanted to lean into the “fish”er man design and gave him fish fins and a tail.
It’s design is based on a cod fish with striped fins based on the feathers of an osprey
Tumblr media
To make it, I drew the tail pattern on a large piece of paper, cut it out, cut each section out of the respective fabric times two, sewed the two sides together, and lastly filled it with a ton stuffing.
Tumblr media
The tail is heavy, but it’s fun to wack people with it.
The fins for the arms and beanie are made in a similar way, each hand sewn onto the beanie/bracers once stuffed.
Tumblr media
The Overalls
I had originally planned for him to be wearing waders, but wanted to make the outfit more wearable for everyday wear without overheating. So I opted for some brown corduroy overalls instead.
To add a “wet” look to each pant leg, I briefly dipped each one into some black fabric dye before rinsing and drying.
The green pixels on his skin look like they could be kelp or patches so I decided to go with the latter and dug through my scrap fabric to find these green pieces.
I embroidered the edge of each piece with a unique stitch and placed them randomly on each leg.
Tumblr media
The snails!
Of course we can’t forget about the snails
There are three snails for this project with two more eventually on the way (a plush pink snail, and a plush brown snail).
I made the clay blue snail first with polymer and attached tie tacks to the underside so I can use it like a pin and stick it anywhere on my clothes.
Same goes for the pink worm snail which is also made of clay.
Tumblr media
The blue plush snail is based on a pattern from Etsy by willowynn with some slight modifications, mainly to the eyes/feelers, and doubling the size.
Tumblr media
Facial hair
This was one of the parts I was the most excited about for this cosplay and the only part I didn’t do myself. I commissioned @basic-amoeba to make a custom ventilated beard, styled and everything. This part turned out so good!
Tumblr media
Some final notes for this project
This cosplay took from Feb 20 to March 15th to complete since I was so determined to finish it before Grian changed his skin. Haha look at me now. He still hasn’t changed it.
Not pictured (cause why can I only add 10 photos 😭) is the mending book with a fish hook I made using scrap faux leather, cardboard, and some cut printer paper. I painted in galactic the word mending and sprayed the whole thing in my “enchanting” spray paint (a blue to purple iridescent glitter spray paint)
A small fun backstory to the fishing rod:
My grandpa is an experienced fisherman and has dozens of fishing poles. When I talked about this project with him, he brought me out to his workshop and pulled down the dustiest fishing rod there. He told me he had fished this fishing rod from a lake one day with the line and bait still attached. Can’t get anymore accurate to Minecraft fishing than that lol.
Obligatory cosplay photo:
