Etho cannot deny that in some way, the ocean is messing with his friends, and that he noticed far too late.
It targets Gem first, long before it goes after anyone else, so subtly it’s almost undetectable. Here’s the way he notices: her little boat is cute, but the mangrove wood on the trim seems old and rotten in some places, murky river water staining the paint that coats the sides. The lighthouse, when built, seems washed out, as if the color has been sucked from the stone that forms it. Etho finds this strange, but refuses to jump to conclusions- Gem is still his little sibling with the same warm smile, so he lets it be for now.
It’s really when the fishing craze begins where Etho starts having doubts about the normalcy of things. Grian is in no way an average person most of the time, but this level of dedication is new and sort of suspicious. It starts with the mending book, which is fine, since he’s decided to avoid villager trading this season. Etho comes over sometimes and jokes about the luck of the sea. Here is where it gets weird, though: when he comes over to make that joke again, Grian turns his head, oh so slowly, expression serious and eyes blank as he replies.
“The ocean will provide the book. It’s the next one, I know it.”
It takes a little more effort than it should for Etho to not turn tail and run. The tambre of his friend’s voice is off-kilter and strange, almost hollow in the way it echoes. And it’s the way he doesn’t say mending, he just says the book- Etho can’t help but feel like he isn’t fishing for enchantments anymore. The air smells of rot and slime. He swallows bile, gives a little uh-huh as a reply, and leaves as soon as he can.
Then there’s Pearl and Beef, obsessed with salmon, of all things. Pearl’s thing seems like a one-off, but Doc tells him that Beef has taken the joke about “big salmon” a little too far, claiming he’s gotten emails from them that have threatened the goat directly. Etho doesn’t really know what to make of that, or Pearl’s salmon head, or the continuous slapping of fish on noteblocks that’s driving him insane.
But he knows this: he’s never really liked fishing before, not for its intended use, anyway. It’s good to have in a death game, but not once has Etho found the monotonous motions of fishing appealing. Grian said it best himself: he used to think fishing was lame. And he did. Does. He thinks it’s lame. He thinks all of this stuff about the river and the boats and the ocean and the salmon and the rot is all really weird and not at all cool. He’s only here to make sure his friends are okay. Not to fish, because he doesn’t want to, just to keep Magic Mountain in line.
But Grian says it again: Etho walked up here and was like ‘this is lame’, now look at him! Etho, in turn, looks at his hands. When did he start fishing? Was the sun always that high in the sky? Did the ocean always sing like that? Was there always a magnetic force to the waves at the shore, pulling him closer with every lap of sea foam? Was the lighthouse always this beautiful?
No, no it wasn’t. He knows this. Something is very, very wrong. There’s something in the water that’s making his friends lose it, and there’s something supernatural that’s trying to pull him in. He needs to get out of here, back to the jungle, with its nice green grass and earthy smells-
To his right, Etho hears his death call. The bell rings, the swan sings, and the water keeps lapping at his feet. It’s too late, he knows it, in the way that his hands are gripping the fishing pole with white knuckles, in the way the lilypads seem to grow under his feet to get him closer to the great deep blue. The music continues, the serenade settling into his bones, giving him an eerie sense of calm.
In the magnetic pull of the moment, he doesn’t even realize he’s crying.

Wild Life Session 1 takeaways thus far:
- Tiny Grian blends in with the fish
- Scar and Jimmy are doing their best... I don't have anything specific to say, but I like their cherry hill base plans. And I'm just really glad Scar decided to call them Bam Boys instead of Bang Boys.
- Grian's reputation as a cheater precedes him and it cracks me up... He really is out here like "You really think I'd cheat on you guys? I've been gone for like 5 minutes" and Mumbo and Skizz are just not having it.
- Grian: "I'm not here to share." [Realizes Martyn took all the sugarcane right in front of him.] "Oh, wait... Can I have some?"
- Etho calling BigB his big brother and saying he's nervous about wandering away and needs someone to hold his hand...
- I really enjoyed the Etho-Bdubs banter over the black horse. Bdubs had so many great lines throughout this episode. I especially liked "Wait, I can't take this- That's a bad example for the children."
- Giant Etho and Tiny Scott in the boat...
- Martyn looking around in confusion when he can't find Ren like "I think Ren shrank so much, he perished."
- Ahasbands... save me, Wild Life Ahasbands... Martyn gushing over Mumbo (to Ren) and imitating Mumbo's voice and talking about how cool he is (followed by their later teasing chat over Martyn inventing the wheel) is killing me slowly...
-> sldkfjsdklfj wait, Martyn really is gunning to bring Mumbo on his team, huh? Yeah, that's not gonna last.
- Ren and Martyn talking about how they were going to claim the top of the cherry hill unless someone already put down a sign, and then they reach the top of a long climb and there's just a sign saying Scar and Jimmy live there. Comedy gold...
Martyn: I think [Grian] thinks of you as 'less than half.' Mumbo, who has spent an entire episode bragging about being tiny and loathing anyone big: Or more than half. That'd be worse.
I'm crying.
- I enjoy Martyn saying "I love that for us" in regards to a group he's trying to schmooze his way into, but isn't yet part of.
- I'm fascinated by Sub 1 Club's obsession with getting as tiny as they can and opting to go into swim mode as a form of land travel.
- Oh gosh, Mumbo knows Martyn so well... The lack of faith he has in his honesty is incredible.
- Mumbo screaming at Martyn, "I knew you were tall! I knew it! You're just pretending to be small!" in regards to his personality despite him being small enough to fit in a pocket.
- Martyn leaving by saying "I'm not your friend anymore" sdklfjskd?? Drama in the Ahasband household tonight (/jk)
- Pearl, reluctant to kill animals that have low respawn: Yeah, but porkchops...... Scott: Taste great; yeah, you're right!
- The dichotomy between the other groups I watched, who mostly kept trying to mine or build after they shrank, and GGG + Impulse who started doing parkour.
- CACKLING at Pearl dying, asking her teammates for food, and Cleo looks straight at her and says "Arguably, you shouldn't need any" since her hunger meter refilled when she died.
- Impulse is going to be a really interesting balance to GGG because Cleo is being lightly "aggressive" towards Pearl (Denying her food, teasing her and Impulse for having a thing for soup since they're the Soup Group with Gem). Cleo and Scott cling to each other a lot, so Pearl having a close friend and not ending up a third wheel is interesting.
Scott, digging, calling up in a wobbly voice with his heavy Scottish accent: Pearl, there's a drowned down here! Pearl: There's a... clown down there? Impulse: There is now!
- I doubt the bit will be continuing, but wouldn't that be hilarious if the Clocker family tree extended due to Cleo joking that Pearl and Impulse were her parents?
- Considering I'm currently in the "Impulse and Cleo struggling with half-smothered resentment and weirdness over 3rd Life and stuff" arc in Dog's Life... their conversation about Cleo saying she doesn't trust Impulse is perfect timing. That is literally the arc I've been posting.
- Etho said they're playing in a 500 x 500 world instead of a 700 x 700 one this time. There are so many people this time, so this should be interesting!
-> Even on a server brimming with people, BigB's alone again... (It is very late when I'm scheduling this, so I will watch him another time <3)

Do you think that Grian isn't getting a mending book because the sea needs him to stay fishing? I think the sea in hermitcraft 10 can be seen as an entity, given life through the lore added by hermits such as gem, grian, and pearl. it's influence originates from them, and yet it uses that same influence to manipulate the hermits, to keep the focus on the waters.
The river sees that grian has become obsessed with his fishing, so much so that it has resulted in many hangouts (and one could argue cults) based around his dock area. The sea knows that grian needs it, Grian doesn't know that the sea also needs him. The sea provides, but the sea must also survive. So it makes him dependant, he needs that mending book and is too stubborn to give up.
The most acceptable scenario for the waters is for grian to fish there indefinitely, growing more and more desperate to find that book. His base will become neglected and he will be stay soley around his dock area. The other hermits will become increasingly concerned but will ultimately be unable to break the bond between grian and the sea.
I just think that the sea witholding the mending book from grian, giving it to other players like scar and impulse instead, is a way of keeping its relevance. Once grian has mending, he's done, he'll go back to villager trading, and the sea won't be needed anymore. And the sea cannot allow that to happen. And, if along the way, grian convinces the other hermits to join in the fishing, the sea will provide.

Note
finally giving ya one at long fucking last
Grian killing lizzie via the tea party in the void caused him to go batshit insane for the ocean, particulary with mending, since he not only slew LDShadowlady, Empress of Animalia but the reincarnation of the Empress of the Ocean Empire
An Ocean Empire that has been rotting away and waiting for her majesty to remember them and return at long last; meanwhile all these Hermits don't have any issue with remembering their own past lives. heck it's the regular where they're from
Grian claiming her life and paying her back with mere material items, even though he, a remembering reincarnator could have instead repaid her in helping her rediscover her past life, and didn't even picking up the signs she was a reincarnation, enraged the remnants of the Ocean Empire
so they retaliated by cursing him to obsess, obsess and obsess over the ocean until he mended Lizzie's memories back to how it once was
But as proven with the fox turned bipedal to quadpedal (or was it another villager? my memory's poor) w/ Grian's portal, magic through dimensions doesn't go right
so the spell only took once Grian himself got into fishing himself in season 10, then it turned into an obsession over Mending, and the curse was lifted once he finally got mending
because again, magic goes wrong when the countless factors of dimension travel and differing world's qualities aren't correctly factored in themselves

Unfortunatly, I have lost the post in question. However, someone (probably multiple actually) demanded that since Grian has a fish obsession in season 10 and has been non-stop fishing for 3 episodes straight all fan songs about him should be sea shanties. I just want to let the Hermitblr world know that I have started writing one as we speak.

First post of my art and of course it's of my current obsession(much like Grian and fishing). Though it has been working me out of my art block, also been trying to not be so nitpicky with myself on coloring. To have more fun with digital. I drew it first in pencil then colored it digitally and I'm quite happy with it. As much as I love people drawing Grian as a cod I still love him as a pesky birb and picked a kingfisher. Also loved the drawing @applestruda did with the magic mountain group each having a bell. Even if it's quite a small detail in the drawing I did add it to this design

hello i am fuckin obsessed with the desert duo mer art u posted like an hour ago if there's any more lore u want to share I would love to hear it!
Copying a message here:
Mumbo is a prince, Grian is his royal guard. Scar is a lonely deep water fish of some kind living alone in a cave.
(All of them are mermaids)
Grian gets chased and hurt one time by hunters/fishermen and manages to get away only to run into scar, a deep water fish everyone is scared of. People talk and say they’re all hostile savages basically.
So when Grian first meets scar he’s hurt and he’s terrified-
There’s a deep water fish with sharp teeth and claws and he thinks he’s gonna die. But scar is just overly friendly and keeps trying to be a good host- he never gets any visitors!
He doesn’t realise Grian is scared because he’s been alone for so long and he doesn’t read people well.
Grian maybe passes out at some point because blood loss and then wakes up once he's all fixed up while Scar is trying to make him some food.
After some time Grian realises that this guy is just. Living in this poor little cave that he calls home. And it looks sad. All his stuff is old and broken and Grian thinks to the luxury they live in and he starts to think…. Are the rumours true at all? Have they been treating the deep water folk so badly- when they didn’t deserve it?
Anyway Grian sneaks scar into the palace they have and mumbo has been worried sick because his favourite guard was attacked and then went missing-
So when he sees him with scar he panics of course
Another idea was that the bad boys are the royal guards and grian is mumbos personal guard.
Which would give us a great scene where Joel and jimmy find grian and scar and think scar is keeping grian hostage and they pull out their weapons- which is what makes scar very much defensive and something in griands mind clicks
The deepwater folk aren't hostile, they're defensive. Of course they're gonna act hostile when they come at them with their weapons raised.
Edit: forgot to tag the beloved @angeart who worked on this au with me
Also thank you to @wren-kitchens (everyone pls thank him this au wouldn't exist otherwise-) who made me brainrot over mermaids and gave me this idea with their own au

.......sooooooo, i saw @stiffyck (and friends)s mermaid au.......
Tumblr media
According to the contract i signed, every art piece has to come with 6 paragraphs of rambling, so here ya go.
8 year old me (obsessed with mermaids, would play 'mermaids' in our pool with other kids, huge huge fan of every 'protag. of childrens animated show gets special necklace that lets them turn into a mermaid' show) would absolutely love where i am now. Mermaids were a big part of my childhood! I loved 'em! And i guess i never grew out of that, lmao.
Jake and the neverland pirates, barbie, dora the explorer, sofia the first... they all did it. they all had the 'human girl turns into mermaid for an episode and meets a mermaid bff'. I always loved the Dora one, i got it on DvD from my local library... good times :)
Anyways, if this was a special episode of a looking-back-the-graphics-were-terrible-but-the-music-kinda-slaps 2010's 3d animated disney channel show, Scar would 1000% have a misunderstood-villain-esque song where he maneuvers Grian (about to pass out from terror) into a dance and mourns his lack of company, complete with fish themed puns every other line, a big finish, and effects made of bubbles and sea creatures. Like, poor unfortunate souls from the little mermaid meets shiny from moana meets be our guest type beat.
I like to imagine the bubbles are the tail end of a transition to a comedic scene where grian is distracting the guards with terrible lies while scar tries to sneak into the castle where grian plans to hide him. and then the guards would almost turn and see scar and grian would have to yell 'WAIT' and come up with more bs while scar is struggling with various Shenanigans that get in his way.
i have very,, very specific thoughts about this au (if it were a kids tv show, lmao) Can You Tell :D
Idk man, i just love mermaids, this AU, kids TV nostalgia, and satisfying my inner child even though i am Way off from what this AU was originally intended as. Anyways see yall ✌️
(Non-bubbly version under the cut)

Welcome to my post that sums up all of the insanity that I've been experiencing over the similarities of Philza's lore from both Hardcore and QSMP and the lore of Grian from various places, with EVOSMP, Hermitcraft, and Life series being the main ones. I need to no longer be going insane about this alone.
This piece mainly talks about Watchers from EVO and the Enderking from Phil's hardcore lore and QSMP, but the two characters also have links to eachother. It is not just Fishing-Obsessed British Bird Men.
So firstly, we have the obvious link, of the villains color scheme and depictions in lore.
Watchers are generally depicted as purple, thanks to the color of the Evolution SMP Logo, and the fact that they reside in the end. We know that Listeners can be purple colored thanks to Martyns final limited life episode where they are shown for the first (and so far only) time.
The Enderking is shown as purple as well, definitively canon in lore, as shown in the QSMP Stream "Break past the Void". Also, the Enderking obviously has connections to the End, just like the Watchers.
Both reside in the End initially, before ending up affecting the overworld.
Secondly, we have the link of depictions in lore for the two main characters.
Phil is canonically a bird in QSMP, and although I'm not sure if it's canon to hardcore lore, he certainly flies around a lot, and I'm pretty sure he's been called a bird by the hardcore gods. (Rose, Blaze Empress, and Ocean Himbo man.) He's also known as the angel of death.
Now, Grian is, in EVO canon, a Watcher. Now, Watchers are depicted as angels in lore and in fanart, more traditional statues on the actual server, but then became more eldritch with biblical angel looks after the fans got to them. This helped contribute to his bird hybrid headcanons from the fandom, along with living in the jungle and liking parrots.
(You can probably see the similarities here with Grian's lore being slightly more vague)
Third, we have the abilities of the Watchers vs the Enderking.
Both can canonically possess people, with the Enderking going for Phil, and succeeding with what happened in QSMP from the Stream "Greed comes with a price..." , and the Watchers controlling Martyn in his Limited Life Finale, potentially tipping the balance to him winning.
The placing of obsidian. In EVO, when Grian steals from the Watchers, they chastise him, call him greedy, and place obsidian over every single one of their chests. Alternatively, the Enderking puts Obsidian in all of Q! Phil's special places, specifically crying obsidian.
Also, as a side note, I would just like to say that in Hermitcraft 9, Grian had a large rift underneath his base that leaked magic into the surrounding area. It was bright magenta, and turned into a huge nether portal when it was activated by Grian thanks to his pressing a button. When the portal starts to close it gained both crying obsidian and normal obsidian. --- It ended up closed until the end of the season, where it reopened with a ring of crying obsidian that let him transport realms to the next season of hermitcraft.
Both of these are caused by the god-like entity judging the person as greedy.
So. Thank you for coming to my essay. Probably the first of many.

Asdfgkdkgsjd those are all just. For some reason the mumbo one reminds me of Grumbot
The grian and gem ones make me think oOGH what if they're idk like. The Watchers make them shapeshift involuntarily or something?? Curse of Mirroring perhaps. which also if we go on the "Watchers are viewers" theory then HEHEHE We Have An Impact (mischievous)
Wait doc being a creeper goat hybrid is CANON ⁉️
Oogh what do you think of the hc I found somewhere (don't remember where unfortunately) that Tango sprinkled soul sand in his hair for the Dungeon Master Look in s9?
Also PET team is very special to me bc its
Tango (Do2 creator)
Etho (Do2 winner)
Pearl (Do2 puzzle solver)
and that is .woag
sorry. am obsessed with do2
I actually started watching Hermitcraft in s10 so I'm only vaguely aware of Grumbot :P
For Grian and Gem, my idea was that the ocean is... not alive, but not exactly normal either. It speaks to them and it changes them. Here, have a doodle
Tumblr media
[ID: a pen doodle of Grian and Gem fishing. Grian has a vacant expression, and he asks Gem "do you hear the whispers too, Gem?" Gem looks at him with a somewhat concerned expression. /end ID]
I mean, Doc's skin is a creeper and it has goat horns. I'd say that's pretty canon
I love the soul sand headcanon! I like to think that soul fire burns hotter than regular fire, so using soul sand as fuel makes it easier for Tango to be in cold places
