Allesandra certainly wasn’t expecting the young man that was walking up her drive like a lost but determined rabbit deep in a foxhole. His father was a particularly stubborn old fool that had given the family grief for some time. In fact, he had been the judge to sign off on a few search warrants that had impacted her grandson in particular. Now, why would his young, upright son be talking a lonely stroll to her front door?

The medicinal bottle of wine was stashed and her cigarette squashed before windows were thrown open and fresh coffee set to boil on the stove. A few of the older children were divided up to go and inform the others that they had a guest. She sent her favorite curly headed Irish child, barely seven, to go and fetch their unexpected visitor from the front.

Smoothing her dress, she made her way into the parlor room where a pleasantly surprised smile greeted the young man. “I did not expect anyone, I hope you forgive the wait. I was busy with the children.” She greeted warmly.

If Abel could see her now, she was sure that he would have a fit.

But she felt the most comfortable like this, in the middle of the crowd where she could touch all of their minds; she could feel their joy as loudly as her own, louder still. In these jackets that were far too masculine, or so her mother and father would have said and in the hair that swings in a heavy light blonde braid in her back. She is not drunk, she doesn’t need it, in the middle of all of this loud music and loud laughter, she feels herself be swayed by the same warmth, the same burning sensation at the mouth of her stomach and neck. The ease of the smile and the slight stumble of one’s boots. It was easy to get drunk on how alive everything around them felt.

That was what she chased, the reason why every time that Laurent looked at her and asked her to jump the fences of her home she did without looking twice. She knew that something was off, she had known for a very long time but she also felt confident. Foolish perhaps, but she did and that was the reason why she chose to go into the dying light with one arm around his, laughing alongside everyone else.
