#2578 - Pittosporum tenuifolium - Kōhūhū
AKA black matipo, kohukohu and tawhiwhi. The binomial translates as 'tarry-seeds' 'thin-leaves'.
An evergreen tree endemic to Aotearoa, growing up to 10 m in height, and growing in coastal and lower montane forests and scrublands over much of the country. I was a bit surprised to find it on the West Coast however, which is generally too wet for the species to do well. Thrives in disturbed areas, and widely cultivated in gardens. The flowers are usually dark red or dark purple, but not prominent, and are most strongly scented at night.
Widely used by the Māori, including many medical purposes, and the oils and resins for their fragrance. The branches have been used in ceremonies, such as welcoming visitors to a marae. Two of its common names, tāwhiri ("to wave to") and rautāwhiri ("to wave a leaf") refer to that use.

New Zealand South Island Adventure day 8: Franz Josef -> Hokitika -> Charleston - The glacier is visible from the town centre of Franz Josef. As I drove northward, it entered into the agriculture region from the glacier country and the south west coast wildness that more towns are on the way. Stopped at the historic Ross Goldfields, the popular hub Hokitika, the largest town in the west coast Greymouth and its birdview lookout, Strongman Mine Memorial, Pancake Rocks and Blowholes and finally arrived at Charleston early enough to get some healthy food at dusk. It has been raining all day that the views are not so great. Finally got time and facilities for laundry and that’s the reason I chose the small town on the highway over Westport for tonight’s stay. #franzjosefglacier #hokitika #greymouth #westcoast #buller #northernwestcoast #newzealand #roadtrip (at Charleston, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpsB1rgPDji/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Crossing New Zealand by Train: The TranzAlpine Express
The Solo Scale: It’s a mode of transportation like any other. Book your ticket in advance and be mindful of where you’d like to sit. With luck, you might get an empty row of seats and have space to stretch out! All aboard! If you need to head from the West side of the South Island back to Christchurch (or maybe you’re going the other way), one of the most convenient ways (and most beautiful) is…

#2580 - Coprosma propinqua - Mikimiki
AKA mingimingi on the North Island but both names are applied to closely related species such as C. dumosa, C. rhamnoides, C. virescens and C. crassifolia, as well as unrelated plants like Acrothamnus colensoi. One common English name is black scrub. Propinqua means "related to another species", supposedly to the Leafy Coprosma C. parviflora.
A widespread small leaved divaricating shrub found in all parts of Aotearoa. It hybridises readily with C. robusta (karamu).
The flowers are green, and the fleshy fruit can be translucent dark blue, blue-flecked, indigo, and sometimes yellow or white when ripe.
Greymouth, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Wedding dress, 1909
This cream satin dress was worn at the wedding of Christina Thomson and Charles Haglund in 1909 in the town of Kumara, on the South Island’s West Coast.
The elaborately detailed bodice of this dress consists of a pin-tucked central panel in V shape with woven ribbon and tulle frill detail on the neckline. Lace appliqué partly covers the front and back of the bodice across the pin-tucked area. The sleeves are gathered and each is studded with 10 fabric buttons and trimmed with woven ribbon and lace edging.
Despite its apparent isolation, in the late 1800s Kumara was a booming gold mining town. In 1877, it had a population of 4,220 compared with 328 today. One of the town's more prominent members, Richard Seddon, went on to become Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1893–1906.
The detail and superb craftsmanship of this dress reflects the affluence of a bygone era of Kumara’s history, and is reminiscent of many similar towns throughout New Zealand that have fallen into decline.

OC Two Truths and Lie
Thanks @gummybugg for tagging me!
Rules: Post two truths and a lie about one of your OCs and see if people can guess the lie!
I'm going with Ardolf on this one. Mostly because he's the main OC I use on this blog, and the main OC I use in my heart.
Let's go!
In the official 'canon'*, he actually found the cure for lycanthropy, and is longer a werewolf.
He might be a gruff mountain man, but his type is the exact opposite. He's had heartbreak in the past with a fair share of the rich and noble.
He's a top.
I'm tagging @theres-a-v, @clock0x, @cinnabeebie, and @plasma-packin-mama in this one. Dealer's choice on what character you choose for it.
