Tianzifang Hutong, Shanghai. - The bluish-grey brick is a key material in traditional Chinese architecture. The kiln, firing technique and specific properties within the clay give the bricks a unique character and color. Even if the types of kiln vary from place to place in China, they still share a basic design philosophy and prototype. Bricks are fired in closed kilns with a roof for water injection. The colour of a brick is largely dependent on the type of soil from which it is made, however it is this process of spraying water on the bricks whilst they are cooling that produces the beautiful bluish-grey colour. Oxidation and reduction are chemical processes, often deliberately invoked during firing, usually by adjusting the amount of air that is burning the fuel. With plenty of air, the kiln atmosphere is described as oxidising. Most natural clays contain iron minerals, either oxides or hydroxides. Iron can exist as ferrous iron in the reduced state Fe, in which case it forms dark grey oxides and hydroxides, and this causes some sediments to be dark in color. After firing, however, this iron may be oxidized to the Fe state, or ferric state, which forms the red-brown iron oxide hematite. This is why the Chinese kilns differ from Roman brick kilns which generally have an opening at the top so that the clay can be fully oxidised after firing.
